I took a look at the starting line-up for the New Orleans Saints to see where their players were drafted and here were the results.

 

Offence

 

First Round - 2 players

Second Round - 3 players

Third Round - 0 players

Fourth Round - 2 players

Fifth Round - 2 players

Sixth Round - 0 players

Seventh Round - 1 player

Undrafted FA - 1 player

 

Defence

 

First Round - 4 players

Second Round - 2 players

Third Round - 0 players

Fourth Round - 1 player

Fifth Round - 0 players

Sixth Round - 0 players

Seventh Round - 1 player

All seven rounds are loaded with potential starters. It's up to the front office now to make the right picks next year and we need to stockpile as many as we can now.

To go along with this assessment, how did the Saints acquire these players? They were not all drafted by the Saints; ie, Brees and Greer were free agents, et al.

Your right, these players came to the Saints via draft, trades and FA. Improving via FA will be a must but having more picks in the draft will increase our chances of having one or two impact players for years to come.

This post tells me two things:

 

1- You are Canadian.

2- Coaching and scheme matters to the fullest extent.

3- You gotta take a chance and spend some cash to snag a top-notch, proven free agent here and there... but not be a redskin.

A half dozen starters on each side of the ball were drafted in the first two rounds of the draft. That seems to say picks from the first two rounds are valuable and should be starters.

Looks like the first two rounds of the draft are by far the most important, go figure. Never woulda thunk it.

You see that half came in the first 2 rounds, right?

 

Do you get why that is?

 

It's because you have, say, a 75% chance of getting a decent pro in the 1st round and after that it falls dramatically. By round 7 you're looking at a 1 in 100 proposition or worse.

 

So yeah the Bills have picks but let's be realistic. They need more years than they need 6th round picks

The 98 Superbowl Champion Broncos had ONE first round pick -- that was Elway the rest of the team were 3rd round or later or UDFA Shannon sharp 7th round --Terrel Davis 4th round , so you don't need all 1st rounders just good (scouting) talent evaluators and good coaches !!

Our first and second picks the last two years are either starters or will be. (Wood not Maybin) And if we would have made just about any pick but Maybin we'd have 5 solid players to build upon chosen in the first two rounds. Love to have that do-over....

 

Still a few more strong drafts and intelligent FA signings is the only path we have out of this mess.
