  1. Losman looked the same in the UFL as he ever did, but he seemed to improve on timing patterns and comeback routes. he still had a poor sense for the rush, made inexplicable mistakes, and lacked touch on short passes.

He probably needed/needs more time than most would to develop. Because of those physical traits - assuming he keeps them up - he'll get a chance. One of these days I could see the light going on for him and having a few good seasons. Maybe he beats out Whitehurst in Seattle and does it there. They need a QB to step up.

  2. I was thinking about this while looking at the video from OTA's yesterday. I haven't heard much, if anything, about Carrington. Based on highlight reels (I know, they are called "Highlight" reels for a reason) from his college career and his stat lines the guy looks like he could be a real impact player in the next few seasons. I want to know what he has been showing in the OTA's. He is in a bit of a dogfight at DE, but I'd hope to see him in the mix with the opportunity to be in the SL at some point this season.

Probably not much to say about him until the pads go on. He's playing the trenches and will be effective if he can hold at the point of attack whent he bullets fly. Anything else he can do is just adde3d bonus, but he won't see the field if he can't play the run.

  3. I think Gailey will be focusing more on packages and exploiting match ups so "ranking" the WR might not really be the way he is looking at it. I think this is pretty easy.

    Evans #1

Hardy #2 (Hardy kicks inside on 3 WR sets.)

Easley #3 (I think he has only been lining up outside. Comes in on 3WR sets, or run blocking formation in 2WR sets **)

Parrish #4 (In my opinion still a gadget player who could achieve some success in the slot if Gailey gets creative)

Chad Jackson #5 (Has made some catches in preseason and has blazing speed over Johnson)

Steve Johnson #6 (Looks like a solid player but I haven't heard any buzz about him this year)

** Easley played in a running offense for most of his college career and should be a polished run blocker.

I think you hit the nail on the head here. We are going to be a match up offense and who's going to play each week is going to depend on the competition. If we are playing a bunch of small DBs, look for him to go tall on more plays than normal, if the DBs are slow, look for them to go fast more than normal.

I think it's going to be refreshing (assuming it pans out this way) to see the offense make adjustments throughout the game to take advantage of the opponent's weaknesses. Kind of like what the Pats do to us every year.

  4. ...the amount of underneath crossing patterns that are being run in OTAs. There seem to be a ton. These are classic Andre Reed type plays and would love to see them back as they can be big gainers when you clear out the zones. I don't know why these were non-existent in the Jauron era.

Because we never had competent offensive leadership. Or maybe our leadership was just offensive... (badum bum chhhh)

  5. I'm starting to think about the signing of our top three picks. I was taking a look at who is representing CJ and who else they represent. It seems that CJ is represented by Pro Tect Management and their other clients include Jason Taylor, Antonio Cromartie, Terell Suggs, Dwight Freeney, and Darren Sproles among others. Their website is filled with listings about the record setting contracts that they've inked for their clients. I don't know their history in terms of holdouts, just looking at the numbers that they've put up for their clients

With the coming uncapped year does anyone think that they're gonna milk Ralph for the max that they can get?

Everything that I've seen has pegged CJ as a standup guy but how much control does he have in the negotiation process? I'm starting to get worried that it will take a while with him and they're gonna wait for the slotting to work out. I hope we have him and the rest of our draftees on day one of training camp but GUESSING at the size of the payout that they are looking for I think they'll be waiting for the #8 to get signed. I hope that things are different from last year.

I think this FO has more sense than to let their first round pick hold out. Part of it is the player's representation, but I think part of it is also the FO and the stance they take. I get the feeling that Buddy doesn't take **** from anyone and everyone knows it. Anothe rfactor is that, Spiller might eb a great player, but we already have two RBs that can play, so it's not like he has added leverage in the negotiation from that perspective.

  6. Currently there are 11 WR's on the Bills roster. Out of those 11, who do you feel will will make the team and what WR position will they have?

    Marcus Easley

    Lee Evans

    James Hardy

    C.J. Hawthrone

    Felton Huggins

    Chad Jackson

    Steve Johnson

    Donald Jones

    David Nelson

    Roscoe Parrish

    Naaman Roosevelt

I forgot about Roscoe in my earlier post, so I closed that thread. Here's my list to start the season:

    #1WR: Lee Evans

    #2WR: James Hardy

    #3WR: Roscoe Parrish

    #4WR: Marcus Easley

    #5WR: Steve Johnson

Extra WR they keep (healthy scratch on game day): Chad Jackson

    Practice Squad: Felton Huggins

    The rest will be cut.

    Comments...

I think it's going to fallout like this for opening weekend:

    Evans

    Hardy

    Parish

    Easley

    Johnson

    Jackson

    PS - Nelson or Jones - the one that's 6'2", not 6'5" & Roosevelt

I could actually see Jackson getting cut for Roosevelt, but it's too early to tell. I think they are going to go for what SD currently has at WR - a bunch of tall guys that can run, which is why I think they keep the bigger rookies on the PS. I wouldn't be surprised to see Easley playing opposite of Evans by the end of the year either, but expect Johnson/Hardy to get a good number of looks. Since Jackson has been Playing Evans' position at WR and he doesn't really get hurt, I can't see him getting a lot of time. Especially considering he isn't even that big compared to our other WRs. He also has had more opportunity without the major injuries (though a few nagging ones) than Hardy and has done about the same as him - zip.

  7. I'm well aware of young linemen's rookie woes....but you can see if they have skills or not (if you watch closely or if he gets shoved down the field often).

and about my Mccargo/ Troup comparison....whaddaya mean?!! It doesn't really matter what positions they play! They were both drafted way higher than expected, they were both drafted very high overall, and they were both the second selection of their draft. But I do think the fact that they are both Defensive lineman adds to the familiararity of the 2 picks....

Man you guys are a tough crowd....complaining about text size? nitpicky things,,,,maybe the poster has little computer knowledge and maybe somethin' screwy happend when he was cutting and pastin'; or somethin like that

    ...so picky...tsk...tsk...tsk

    GO BILLS!

Cut and pasted from the Rumblings site, eh....?

You ain't in Kansas anymore, buddy. Buffalorumblings.com is OTAs and this is overtime in the Super Bowl as far as poster intensity is concerned. It's dog eat dog, punch your sister in the face, steal Tim Anderson's lunch pail here.

  8. I was thinking about a fan post I read the other day, I can't remember what the title was or what it was supposed to be about.,but everyone started to talk about Torell Troup and the fact that he has to play well, for our defense to be successful. It struck me as odd because there was little disagreement on this matter.

I was thinking about the truth in that summary, when it dawned on me that he has to play well for the whole team to be sucessful.

Think about it, if he gets shoved all over the field this year, rookie or not, that's a lousy pick. He's a very high draft choice and Nix and Modrak stated that your ones and twos (draft choices) have to be able to play as rookies. I for one, for the most part, agree with that statement.

And if he's a lousy pick, he will remind you of a another lousy pick; John McCargo. McCargo was drafted under the same circumstance as Terrel. Drafted way higher than most had him rated. This continuity suggests perhaps that the same guy drafted them, and that guy would be Tom Modrak . Not only that, but his boss, Buddy Nix approved it. So, it would suggest that it is highly likely that we will have to start from scratch soon, yet again.

So if we want to learn if the Bills new braintrust knows how to find talent, and we do; Torel Troup's rookie season will be as good indicator as anything....

    All Hail Torrel Troup!

    Terell Troup!

    GO BILLS

Absolutely correct in saying that a lot of our success or lack thereof this year will be the result of Troup's play. He is going to be one of the biggest cogs in the run defense, which should translate into time of possession, which translates to offensive chances, etc, etc.

I agree with this being an important pick for the new FO and one that will show how well they can evaluate talent. Troup was picked early in the 2nd round and basically started a run on NT prospects through the second round and into the third. They had their pick of the NTs and they choose Troup. He's their guy and has to produce this year. It's for this reason I think your comparison to McCargo is way off. McCargo was a reach out of need. There were no other DTs taken until late in the third or fourth round that year - basically not a good year for DTs. In the case of Troup, they took him because they thought he was the best, not because that's all that was left.

  9. i remember the days of people complaining about London Fletcher and the old 'he makes tackles ten yards downfield'. Hindsight is 20-20, but that guy has got to be one of the top 10 players to have ever played the game considering enthusiasm, durability, athleticism, heart, span of career, and leadership by example. good for him.

haynesworth is who he is, and if not this, something else. he is not london fletcher.

There are a few erroneous posts in this thread, but this one takes the cake. LF, while a fan favorite and decent player, is nowhere near a top 10 player of anything. He works hard and tries, which are great things to do, but I think I could name 10 players currently playing at his position that I would take on my team before him at any point in his career, let alone now. In fact, if Poz doesn't get hurt this year, I would move him past LF as well.

  10. there is a point on that side... but players change positions all the time. theyre not asking him to change to the offensive side of the ball. Stroud isnt pissing and moaning about our change. for $100mil, go play where ever they ask you to.

I've heard Stroud say in past years that he would want to play DE in a 3-4 and didn't like th eidea of playing NT in it. If Haynesworth could/would play DE he might have something different to say. Not to defend him, because he sucks, but he probably doesn't want to answer press conference questions every day about why he isn't producing big numbers, while he's being asked to play a no-stat position. On top of that, he probably would rather play a penetration style, which isn't what they're looking for.

It's interesting to note that in our transition to the 3-4, no one is really complaining (not that they should or anyone would care if they did). K Williams isn't a great fit at NT, but apparently they are going to scheme around him. Why the hell wouldn't the Redskins make it known right off the bat that they were going to find the best ways to use players? Sounds like they are trying to use the old square peg in a round hole method on defense during the transition period. I personally like the idea of coaching staffs actually coaching and scheming to players strengths rather than marginalizing a good player because they don't fit in what the coaches know and have done.

  11. I was just reading a post on the Patriots and how they've managed players over the last few years, and people on this board were enjoying their woes - and I thought, the Patriots aren't the team at the top of the mountain anymore, so to speak.

I'm thinking the Ravens have built up a team that will really be hard to stop, with their good running game, and now their WR's and TE's - ouch - and then their front seven on Defense... the only thing missing from a team that could be considerably better than their Super Bowl winning team of 2000? is a shutdown corner. Well, if they had a better cornerback duo they would be without apparent weakness.

So, my proposal is this: we've got a good cornerback stable. We could use Gaither. Couldn't we offer them one of our cornerbacks and a lower round pick for Gaither? I'd send either McGee or Florence if I were getting Gaither in return. Anyway, as I see it, Baltimore is so close to being a championship team they might be willing to deal Gaither for some security in their secondary.

It was rumored a while ago that the hold up to the deal was tha tth Ravens wanted McKelvin for him. I would send McGee in a second, but I'd need a top 100 pick back from them for McKelvin in addition to Gaithier. McKelvin is going to have a great year.

  12. Whether Walker got cut or not they had no credible backup plan because Walker was not and never was going to be an adequate LT. Even Walker would tell you that. Don't even bring up Demtrius Bell. He was so out of his depth and ill-prepared that he couldn't even get the snap count straight.

As it stands the Bills are still in a situation where the LT position is an impending disaster, again.

I think if Walker had not been cut and we hadn't tried to run the no-huddle, he would have done better than bell did last year. He looked OK to get by on for a year in preseason, he just couldn't keep up with the pace.

  13. Spartacous, I do agree with your statement. Just be careful with the negativity or you will be called and labeled a TROLL. I think I have been labeled the #1 troll here. Doesn't bother me. Your statement is dead on. I am all for fans thinking positive but....lets be realistic too.

You're not the number one troll here - don't flatter yourself.

  14. If the issue was as simple as trading Lynch for JB I would quickly take it. Brown would certainly fill a critical need and his addition would add depth to the line. Using Bell and Merideth as backups and having them fill in would certainly be a better way to develop them as opposed to just throwing them in and hoping that they can handle their positions. What the front office needs to know is whether JB could come to satisfactory contract agreement with the Bills. My understanding is that his contract runs out after this season. Another consideration is how healthy or impaired is he?

As it stands I strongly suspect the Saints might cut JB if they can't deal him. Last year they rotated a couple players to fill the LT spot, with the young player (Bushrod) getting most of the playing time. In addition, the Saints drafted LT Charles Brown from USC in the second round so they have that position well staffed, even without JB.

I think the front office also has to be sure that Brown is a better player than what they have now and going forward because if comes in one of either Bell or Meredith doesn't make the team.

  15. I've posted before that not only does he have a small frame from a biomechanical perspective (shoulder joint to shoulder joint, hip joint to hip joint, etc), but also the girth of his limbs is small. He has small wrists and elbows…probably his femur and all his major bones are of small diameter.

Put differently, there are probably many NFL players of Maybin's height, whose bones alone are 10-25 pounds heavier than Maybin's.

Maybin may not be bigger than Terrell Owens is.

Some players struggle to keep weight off. Others struggle to keep weight on.

I don't know if Aaron will become a good player or not but I feel that he's one of those guys that will have a hard time adding and keeping on, muscle mass.

Since you've already measured his bones and the distance between his major joints on both sides, what can you tell us about the shape of his skull?

I think a lot of people are forgetting how young the kid is. I hardly put on any weight between the ages of 17 and 23. Since I was about 25 I've been steadily putting it on. I would expect most people follow that curve or a similar one. Why does everyone think that he won't get any bigger? And since when has everyone become a bone-development expert?

  16. are bills fans aware the bills have a very talented left tackle named Jamon Meredith. he is a prototypical left tackle whos only knock coming out of south carolina two years ago was maybe a lack of strength, which most prognosticators said could be remedied by a yr on the practice squad. thats what green bay did and after the unfortunate end to brad butlers career in week five Bills snatched him from the pack. he played sparingly throughout the yr and was a starter for the last four games in fewells tenure, looking like a legit nfl-er

    Bell=Meredith=?

Both those guys are exactly the same player. Bell just has more starts.

  17. ITs very difficult to become a standup LB from a DE and have to cover guys after not doing it for 10 years. Watch and see how kelsay who wasnt a good DE struggles with LB

I'm not so sure this reasoning is correct. I don't think the OLBs in the 3-4 are going to be asked to cover like they were in the Tampa 2. I think the majority of the time he is going to be covering a back out of the backfield. I don't think he'll be covering TEs on seem routes. I think the key especially with Kelsey will be putting him in position to succeed. If he's in there on 3rd and long as an OLB, then we're in trouble. I don't see any problem with him being in there on 3rd and short though. The TEs, while he's in the ame, are going to have to be covered by the SS unless they are more blocking types.

I think how few times Kelsey is exposed as playing out of position will be a huge reflection on how well George Edwards designs the defense. The entire coaching staff has been saying that they will design their schemes around the players on the roster and this has to be especially tru eof the defense because they look like a hybrid defense on paper. If Kelsey is getting burned on seem routes all year, Edwards needs to go.

  18. Anyways, Fingon was good enough to post this article in another thread but unfortunately it spawned nothing but the usual bipolar arguments about the outlook for the season with the associated infighting and backbiting characteristic of our message board and its members.

What is most interesting about this article, is that Allen Wilson posts a Bills depth chart. The thing is, the Bills themselves don't have an official depth chart at the moment.

I surmise this to mean that the depth chart in the article is Allen Wilson's projections, and though not shocking, some of his projections are pretty interesting. I've bolded the more interesting ones.

    http://www.sportingnews.com/nfl/article/20...-camp-countdown

    Depth chart

    Offense

    QB: Trent Edwards, Ryan Fitzpatrick

    FB: Corey McIntyre

    LG: Andy Levitre, Kyle Calloway

    C: Geoff Hangartner, Christian Gaddis

    RG: Eric Wood, Kirk Chambers

    RT: Cornell Green, Kirk Chambers

    TE: Shawn Nelson, Derek Schouman

    WR: James Hardy, Steve Johnson

    WR: Lee Evans, Roscoe Parrish

    Defense

    RE: Dwan Edwards, Alex Carrington

    OLB: Aaron Maybin, Chris Ellis

    ILB: Andra Davis, Kawika Mitchell

    ILB: Paul Posluszny, Keith Ellison

    CB: Terrence McGee, Drayton Florence

    CB: Leodis McKelvin, Reggie Corner

    SS: Donte Whitner, Bryan Scott

    FS: Jairus Byrd, George Wilson

The only ones that are remotely controversal are McKelvin and Spiller, but neither are that out of left field. I read an article in TBN today that alluded to Schobel playing DE for us this year - these guys are jokes for the most part anyways.

  19. I think that a lot have fans have noticed the lack of slant routes the last few years. If a lot of fans noticed obviously every opposing defenses knew it too. This was part of a larger problem that our QBs, especially Edwards, didn't work the middle of the field. Everything was a dump off or an out route. Well, that and the 2 balls that Edwards threw 40yrds in the air all last year.

If Edwards is supposedly so accurate, working the middle of the field shouldn't be a problem. The only reason I can think of for why they don't work the middle of the field is because Edwards has a weak arm and can't get those throws in there with some zip.

Or the coaches were beyond bad at their jops last year. The more I think back to last season - and I love AVP - the more I think AVP was in over his head. Not to mention that DJ was in over his head as far as offense goes from the day he signed his contract here.

  20. That's the thing. This team has soooo many question marks. That's why this team is ranked 31st going into the season. They have a lot of talent. But none of these guys have proven anything yet. We have no QB, luckily Chan has had success with nobodys. RB we have too much talent. WR you got Evans. Everyone is gonna triple cover him. No other WR has proven a thing yet. TE is another position no one has proven they can be a go to guy yet. The line is a Big ? All the injuries and No legit LT or RT for that matter. I don't care what you say, NO LINE, NO OFFENSIVE PRODUCTION!!!

So I hope all the RB talent will make something happen, but, come on. I think we're joking ourselves if no one steps up. I hope this Coaching staff can make it happen. I want the offense to be successful, but so much work that needs to be done and alot of personal that have to step up.

Defense is another thing. We're switching from 4-3 to 3-4. How much success have other DE had playing OLB??? I'd love to see that list. I honestly can't think of any. But I hope ours can make that transition. Everyone except the secondary is basically playing a new position. This makes the Front seven suspect until they prove otherwise on the field.

We got lots of potential. But this team hasn't proven its going anywhere yet. They got mucho to prove. Hope the players step up and make things happen. Sick of seeing us lose year in and year out. I want the team to win and hopefully 2010 will be the year to make the change to the right direction.

Wasn't Elvis Drummerviel the leading sacker in the league last year? That was his first year of the switch and I think he's only 6 feet tall!

  21. OK next season we are going to be giving a lot of young guys on offense a chance and some on defense a chance too. OK I think that on defense I think that Troup and Carrington need to prove capable of being fixtures on the D-line. McKelvin also needs to be a number one corner.

As far as offense goes I would like to see Meridith, Nelson, and Johnson (As at least a number 3 WR) to step up. We need an answer at tight end and Nelson needs to be a threat at tightend. Our O-line has a lot of young tackles and as a RT I think Meridith needs to step up and be a capable RT going forward. And at WR we need to find a capable slot guy in Johnson.

Now we have a lot of hole on the offensive side of the ball. And in keeping with my realistic expectations for the season I know that our QB situation might not get solved nor will our LT or #2 WR get solved. However if we can get a serious passing weapon at TE and a capable slot guy out of Johnson it would go a long way to shaping our passing attack. All in all our O-line is a mess but if Meridith can be a solid RT it would go a long way to shaping our O-line.

All in all what young players would have to step up in order for you to call the season a success in terms of player development.

These players need to step up for the team do make the playoffs next year:

Hardy/Johnson as #2 WR - only in the sense that one of them needs to take the job in training camp and hold on to it (not get hurt or benched) for the season.

Spiller as our Harvin - just needs to do what we expect him to do

Bell/Meredith as LT - same as Hardy/Johnson and will need to be above average as a player

Edwards/Fitz, Brohm, Brown as QB - one of them to emerge as a starter and stay that way all year while putting up 3500 yards

Troup/Carrington (along with Stroud/Edwards) as DL - they need to stop the run consistantly

Poz as WILB - needs to continue development and make plays (INTs, TFLs, PBUs)

Maybin as OLB - needs to rush the passer and get at least 8 sacks

  22. I think if the X Factor Brian Brohm wasn't on this roster, Nix and co. would've pulled the trigger on Clausen at 41. It's nice to say, "they are unsure of the QBs on the roster, due to the OL, OC, etc." but good QBs find ways to make plays, even in the most dire of circumstances. There were numerous plays that were there to be made (when Trent or Fitz had ample time to pass) and the QBs failed to make those plays. Evans, Owens, and even Edwards have stated as much. "There were plays out there to be made, but for whatever reason, we didn't make them. It's frustrating." On a second note, please stop with the logic, "all teams passed on this guy, so there's no way he's capable of being a franchise QB. These guys get paid to do these jobs, so if he was a franchise QB, why did he last until the middle of the 2nd round?" GMs, with all of their resources, do not have the ability to forecast success. If so, the Montana's, Brady's, and Warner's of the world would never make it past the 1st round...

It's actually great QBs that find ways to make plays. Most of the QBs in the league are not great - maybe 5 are. The rest have good supporting casts, coaches who know how to use them/what their weaknesses are, and some luck.
