  1. So that's all that has to happen in order for "this" to succeed? Edwards and Evans only need to start playing like Montana and Rice, huh? <_<

So what's your formula for the defense to succeed? Perhaps Stroud and Kelsay need to start playing like Bruce Smith and Darryl Talley? Why stop there? In order for George Edwards' defense to succeed, Stroud and Kelsay have to start performing like LT and and Bruce Smith would have played if they were on the same team.....that's all. :w00t:

You guys are really laying it on thick this preseason. Gailey is great, Edwards looks great, the schemes are great.

When reality bites on opening day against Miami, I will be extremely happy if the genius Gailey and his genius quick passing game and power running game actually combine to keep the Bills in the game, and perhaps help them score 14 to 17 points....total? That would be an improvement over most of last season, anyway!

Oh, and if the Bills play a great game here and there like they did on opening Sunday Night last season, I hope that Gailey's increased demands of toughness and discipline, help them to hold onto their 4th quarter leads this season, allowing them to win closer to 8 or even 9 wins for the first time in 6 years!!

Come on man, it's not like there was some Bills-lovefest going on until you broke it up with this post. The OP made a good point about how the offense this year, to compensate for the poor pass protection, should employ more quick passes than in years past, which if you know anything about football and the way the Bills have played the last decade, seems like a good idea and something a lot of people have been calling for in the past.

No need to change the subject. Some people want to talk about what the 80 players under contract for the Buffalo Bills need to do to be successful, other people want to talk about why they won't be successful. This thread is closer tot eh former than the latter. Why do you need to hijack it to beat a dead horse? I don't think the team is going to do great this year, but it won't stop me from thinking about and talking about what the current team needs to do to become successful. Maybe you need some more objectivity, because your post added nothing to this thread.

  2. I've got to admit, I liked T. Edwards when he took over for J.P., and the Walsh endorsement only helped. But, I liked J.P. when he first started, too. Watching T. Edwards last year was, in my opinion, watching the worst play of any QB I've ever seen. It was painful to watch. It was obvious he had some kind of mental problem, fear related, going on. What I liked about him when he started, though, was that despite not doing anything overwhelming, the offense stayed on the field longer, much more so than with J.P., and was consistent - not great, but consistent, and therefor the defense played better. The whole team played much better. It might be that his limitations were found out quickly by opposing defensive coordinators, or that he just fell apart mentally after getting hit too much - I don't know, but I think if he starts this year over a guy who could have potential (in Brohm), then he better play really good, much better than average, because we know what he has, and we've seen him fall apart, and that isn't worth holding someone else back (Brohm) from developing or not.

I don't want to have any excuses next offseason for not drafting the top QB - like not having evaluated our guys enough. Either we have a star QB, or we need one. It's that clear to me.

I liked the look of him at first too. I think it's presumptive to assume that he was affraid to get hit, which is what was causing him to throw short/checkdown. I think a lot of people don't fully appreciate the pressure he was under being a young starting QB running a new offense for a team with unreasonably large expectations and with a coaching staff that probably wasn't qualified to be in that position. I also think he was having troubel dealing twith the treat of being pulled from any of those games. It's not easy to take chances when one mistake could get you pulled or demoted for good.

Obviously there are flip sides to these arguments, so I'm not trying to say that he's a great QB who was the victim of poor circumstances. In the end, I'm just saying it's tough to draw any conclusion fromt he way he played last year.

  3. Not to pile on the guy, but he is easily the worst player to wear a bills uni in the last 20 years.

This is the most inaccurate statement about the Bills in the last 20 years - there were plenty worse players that Anderson and I used to make jokes about him all the time. These guys have been worse:

    Erik Flowers

    Mike Williams

Billy Joe Hubert (sic) - the guy didn't read the playbook

Chris Watson (who was a personal favorite of mine - he tried so hard, just had terrible luck and little skill)

    Larry Triplett

  4. I wonder myself why I like the Bills so much. I was born in the early 80s and didn't really start watching football until the the late 80s, so I actually started when there were good Bills teams. I also liked the 49ers because I was a big Montana fan, but I never had another team in the AFC that I liked.

Now there are other teams I respect in the AFC - like the Colts and at times I've been partial to the Chargers - but I really only like the Bills. For me personally, I like the fact that they are a consistant underdog, have a lot of tradition, still are in Buffalo (even though it's really OP), etc. If they ever win a title, it'll be one of the coolest things that I could witness.

  5. Yeah because I am tired of seeing this team suck. I am tired of the Bills putting **** out there posing as QB's and I am tired of wasting years on assclowns that obviously suck and everyone but the most ignorant homer can see it.

So which of the four sucky assclowns on our roster are you pulling for to start against Miami week 1? The one with the best stat line is Brown - he hasn't had a chance to fall apart yet.

Not to call you out on this, more just because it's freakin hilarious, but we are talking about starting one of the following QBs this year: a guy who had some chances, melted down, and never came back; a guy who was a high pick, cut in training camp, melted down in one game for us last season; and another guy who just isn't good enoguh (i.e. career backup) to have his bad games be called melt-downs because that's about as well as he can play. Toss in a 7th round pick from a small school and I have to know if it matters at all which one starts/plays/finishes this year.

I think they should each get assigned a quarter of football int he game and whoever plays the best in their quarter can play the 4th....

QB: A lot of the disappointment of 2009 centered on Trent Edwards’ failure to develop into a franchise QB. Rather than seek out an upgrade via trade or in the draft, the Bills enter camp with a three-headed monster of Edwards, Ryan Fitzpatrick, and Brian Brohm.

Early reports indicate Brohm has the upper hand, though that is more a reflection on how little Fitzpatrick and Edwards have performed than anything Brohm has done. Brohm is a 2008 2nd round pick of the Packers who quickly washed out of Green Bay, and he looked pedestrian in limited duty last year. But he has the best touch and most upside of the group, and showed off a quicker release during OTAs. I held him in high regard during that draft, and the anticipated offense here in Buffalo is similar to what he ran at Louisville.

Fitzpatrick and Edwards put up eerily similar lackluster numbers while juggling the starting job last year. The team clearly responded better to Fitzpatrick, a workaholic who buzzes with enthusiasm and is more likely to produce something dramatic. Bills insiders maintain that Edwards must win the starting job or else he’s not going to make the team, and the latter sure seems the most likely outcome. His lack of arm strength and failure to show any sort of leadership or passion are not going to change in Buffalo.

Ideally, all three QBs on the roster are backups on good teams and this position must be addressed next offseason, barring an unexpected breakout from Brohm. But Coach Chan Gailey has found NFL success in the past by tailoring his offense to what his limited QBs do well (see: Quincy Carter and Tyler Thigpen, whom is available via trade). As long as the turnovers are kept to a minimum and whoever wins the gig can complete 60% of the passes, not to mention stay poised and upright behind a seriously deficient OL, the Bills have enough explosiveness at RB to stay competitive.

This arm strength thing is killing me! I heard not too long ago Mark Guaghan from TBN state that Edwards has the strongest arm of the group. Is that true? This guy seems to imply that he has the weakest!

Makes me wonder if any news outlets - TBN included - actually know anything about the Bills or watch the practices.

I guess no one will know anythign until training camp starts and we all learn the pecking order...

  7. ...Was graded out as the 3rd best safety in the league by Pro Football Focus

    http://profootballfocus.com/by_position.ph...&numgames=1

Now I have no idea how they do their grading, but at least IMO George Wilson was our best player on the D last season second maybe K. Williams. I know most people see Byrds 9 plays that resulted in interceptions, but play for play G. Wilson was a total stud last season. I fully expect him to start this season - something other fans Im sure gawk at.

From reading these forums I dont think many other posters think as highly of GW as I do, so I just wanted to post that link.

PS I would LOVE to see our nickle package include Byrd/Wilson/Whitner again this year instead of a third CB - we used that a lot last year with the injuries but I think it worked very well.

I've seen a few write-ups that claim something similar to this. Don't get me wrong, I liek Wilson and thought he had a hell of a year last year, but I'd take either of Whitner or Scott on the field before Wilson unless you knew it was going to be a pass. Wilson is a fine player, but something tells me that if he started and the offense had some film on him, he wouldn't look as good as he did last year. Maybe I'm wrong...

I do agree that I'd love to see Byrd/Whitner/Wilson in the sub package, but for the most part I think the guys in our secondary are good to the point that it doesn't really matter which of the top 7 or 8 players go in the sub package.

To the idea of sub packages, I think to be effective this year on defense, they are going to have to put players in position to succeed based on what they do best situationally. By that I mean that if Wilson plays the pass really well, along with Byrd in centerfield, then he should play in obvious passing downs instead of whoever the "starter" is. This goes the same for all different situations and all the players.

Back to your point in the original post about who should start, I don't think it'll make any difference because they'll all play. I would love to see the defense be ballsy enough to change the lineup slightly from week to week depending on who we were playing and what their strengths are (i.e. outcoaching someone for a change).

  8. Ralph will be remembered as a loyal owner of a small market franchise, and one of the founders of the AFL. In addition, they will mention he was a big player in the original merging of the AFL into the NFL, creating the AFC and NFC. They also might mention he loaned some of his fellow struggling owners of the AFL money to stay afloat in the early days of the AFL.

Unfortunately for him and us, it looks pretty hopeless that he will ever be remembered as a SB winning loyal owner of a small market franchise.

You gotta keep the hope alive, man.

    Buffalo Bills:

I love Bills fans because they're passionate and knowledgeable. In fact, I get more emails from Bills fans than from nearly any other team. They love their team and aren't bitter about the four Super Bowl losses. Still, fans are also realistic and know the Bills are a long way from competing for a return trip to the Super Bowl. Much of this pessimism comes from the fact that the Bills haven't won a playoff game since 1995, and haven't been to the playoffs since 1999. Right now, they're not impressed with quarterback Trent Edwards as the man to lead the team. How could they be? When your offense is the worst in the league in red-zone scoring, plays of more than 10 yards, third-down conversions, and passing first downs made, it's not an offense that can score points quickly. The Bills were also the worst team inside their opponents' 5-yard line, scoring just four times after having 13 chances. With all the problems on offense, the defense didn't fare much better. The unit couldn't stop the run, giving up more than 156 yards per game. Switching to the 3-4 scheme won't cure this problem. It will be a cold winter in Buffalo for Bills fans, unless I'm missing a reason to believe.

REALLY??? We as fans are not bitter about LOSING 4 (FOUR) SUPER BOWLS?????

I stopped being bitter about it sometime in the late 90s. Booze and loose women helped.

  10. You are kidding me, right?

Look around at every position of the Bills heading into training camp.

    Punter - Great.

    Kicker - Good.

    RB - Good.

    CB - Good.

    Safety - OK to Good.

Special Teams - Always good, with UNBELIEVABLE at Kick Returns.

    Now onto reality:

    QB - !@#$ed

    WR - !@#$ed

    OL - !@#$ed

    TE - !@#$ed

    DL - !@#$ed

    ILB - !@#$ed

    OLB -!@#$ed

What football team do you think we are cheering for here, the Pats or Colts, who have maybe one or two positions that are as

    !@#$ed??

If the Bills are not hit with their annual rash of 15 to 20 IR's, they could hang around .500 all season, maybe making a run at the final wildcard spot right up to the last couple of weeks, based on the apparent emphasis of Gailey's staff regarding training and working harder then the previous coaching staff.

But the Bills still need to become more talented, either by the young guys having a great learning season this year and blossoming, or in next years' free agency / draft. (If they play next year, that is!)

You cannot learn talent, so what you state here makes no sense. You either have talent or you don't. I think a big misconception is that the Bills have no talent. They have talent, it's just that those talented players haven't proven that they can play in the NFL yet.

I personally like the TE, DL, and ILB positions on this team and feel they will be better than expected this year.

  11. It should be noted that San Diego's rebuilding took three seasons to become a playoff team. The Chargers were 5-11, 8-8, and 4-12 from 2001 to 2003. They made the playoffs with a 12-4 record in 2004, getting outstanding production from Brees and Tomlinson.

I'm not sure there are many fans who want to wait until the 2013 season to see a winner after 10 season minus the post-season. Building through the draft is a nice principle and all, but it doesn't mean using this method exclusively to put a team together.

I think you could make the argument that SD was worse than we are now when that rebuild began. It mgiht not take 3 years here using the same plan. Hard to say until you see them play I guess.

The one thing we will have answer to about half way through the season is the question: How terrible was Dick Jauran as a coach? I doubt it's just me that thinks this, but I don't think we're as far away from being a good football team talent/draft wise as our record over the past two or three years indicated. Obviously we haven't answered two of the biggest questiosn on offense - QB and LT - but we do have soem players with some talent at the other positions and you got the feeling watching the team the past two years that if the schemes/coaching were a little better they would have won a few more games.

  12. I have to partially disagree with you. I do feel we are not the most desirable place to come to, mainly for the weather(it IS a factor) and the city not being the most fun place to be.(just ask McGahee!) I mean, if YOU had you choice between Miami and Buffalo, where would you go? no brainer. But I don't think we have as bad a rep to the players and coaches around the league as one would think. We will definitely be more desirable once we get better and bring back the old Bills winning ways, but in the end money does talk, and if the money is right for a free agent NOT near the end of his career, I think they would sign on the dotted line.

I also wonder if the state taxes have anything to do with us having trouble getting FAs to come here.

I don't think 90% of the players care what city they play football in to the point of taking any less money to play there. I could also see some players - maybe bigger DL/OLs not wanting to play in a hot climate because of their girth and the heat.

I guess the bottom line is that it's probably not as clear cut as all we fans think it is and make it out to be. There's probably a lot more thought that goes into it than what we fans, sitting in front of a computer while supposedly working your desk job, can realize.

  13. This is a post about why the Bills shouldn't and can't trade for or sign Big Name free agents:

Signing guys like McNeil and Jackson just aren't possibilities for the Bills. Both guys are in the middle of contract disgruntlement. Hypothetically lets say the Bills call their agents and say we will trade for your clients and offer long term contracts paying them among the highest in the league if not the highest. Have we not learned from McNabb? The agent will say no, we have several other teams that he'd rather go to offering the same scenario.

High profile free agents aren't coming to Buffalo folks and it's not because of the weather. It's because we have a reputation as an organization that doesn't know what their doing. Anyone that knows me from my posts, I am not a Bills basher, I just believe this to be our current reality.

I think Nix understands that not only is it a good strategy to build through the draft it is also our only viable option (for now). The days of overpaying for mid level free agents like Dockery are over, under Nix. They were very clear we will begin to build through the draft and sign depth type players in free agency. They have done exactly that and you know what? Nix knew that was his only option, and I for one think he's smart for realizing it. You know admitting what you are is a strong quality.

Look at the Chargers, in 2004 Eli would not go there. Now they have created a culture of winning and can add pieces through free agency. The problem with the Bills is they have not built through the draft, been active in free agency with players that haven't gotten them over the proverbial hump because the foundation wasn't there. And if you keep trading draft picks to get players the foundation never will be. When this team is ready to sign free agents or trade and sign players, they will. It's just not the right strategy now. Nix and Gailey need to evaluate what they have this year and go to step two of the rebuilding process.

The Bills have to win, then the free agents will come.

I agree with what you're saying because I do think it makes a difference to players that they go to a team with a bright future if possible. That being said, I think the bottom line for any player is money: If you throw enough of it at them, they will play for your team.

I think the point you're making is that in order for the Bills to sign FAs to at market or below market deals they are going to have to win football games and look promising. That's basically it in a nutshell.

  14. Nope, but IMO the Bills should sign Adams as a stop gap, that way they can ease Bell or Wang in and those 2 can learn from a veteran.

I think they're taking the approach that one of those two guys or Meredith are going to play this year and that's how they are going to learn - on the job. Admas might be better now than what we have, but he isn't the answer and since we're not going to be that great next year anyways, they're going to see what they have in house.

  15. A man has to be able to live his life without rules that some idiot like you define for him.

Vick's lucky to not be working construction right now. When you can get suspended for nearly anything, and considering all the things he did in the past, you'd think he would have a better handle on who comes to the party, so nothing like this happens.

  16. has a better arm than...

    :)

Yes it's a cruel point to make. But the Trent Edwards' crowd around here had it coming. I predict this noodle-armed wuss is gonna be taken out of his misery and mercifully cut. At least he can continue to devote his full time to his true passion golf, and no longer have to pretend to like playing in the NFL.

    Starters:

    Matt Lienart

    Jake Delhomme

    Matt Cassel

  17. I think Larry got his "Bills" mixed up, i.e., Cowher vs. Parsells. I am glad to see that his editors just give him a pass.

    http://www.buffalonews.com/2010/06/26/1095...o-judgment.html

I've often thought that his recent articles seem a little under-researched. It's like TBN is just so happy he's still writing for them (probably for next to nothing) that they just print whatever he sends no matter how absurd it is. Not only did no one ask for Parcells as far as I can remember, but he was still working for the Phins. I think there was a two week period where people speculated that he would not be retained until the owner came out and said he would be.

  18. Ok, we all know that Ralph is getting pretty old (and thats an understatment)

I seriously hope he lives forever, but the fact is that he wont.

    My question:

What if he suddenly got sick and just died?

Would the team instantly be put up for aution and immediatley move (assuming the new owner want to move which is almost a certanty).

Or, would there be some kind of waiting period?

I mean...what if he passed away today for example? Would this season even be played in Buffalo?

Sorry for the dark question, and once again: LONG LIVE HOFer RALPH

If he died today, or anytime in 2010, there will be no estate taxes. The tax twilighted at the end of 2009 and will come back in 2011.

  19. TOM MODRAK DRINKS BABIES BLOOD

This is actually true. It's how he stays so young looking - he actually invented football back in the mid-1300s then lived in a cave until the mid-1800s when President Jackson killed most of the Native Americans, thus killing lacross in this country and paving the way for American football.

By the way, that's a great quote. Adams was always my favorite conservative.

  20. This is false. He has been running the Bills draft since 2002.

Also want to point out that he didn't want Maybin last year.

A scapegoat? He's been running our drafts since 2002 and has been promoted for his efforts. How does this qualify as a scapegoat?

How in the world are fans content that this guy is still in charge of our college scouting operation? The number of misses has been mind-boggling.

Does Tom Modrak have a bunch of family members posting on TSW today? How could people be coming out to defend his body of work? Modrak has been RUNNING THE DRAFT since 2002 and the roster SUCKS. Was Jauron a horrible coach? Have the free agent acquisitions Modrak had nothing to do with been terrible? Yes and Yes. But that doesn't excuse his body of work.

I will say that I completely excuse him for the Mike Williams and Aaron Maybin picks. But Kelsay over Osi Umenyiora? Roscoe Parrish over Vincent Jackson? Trading up for Poz instead of staying back and taking David Harris? Trading up for McCargo? Trading up for Losman?

THESE MOVES WERE ALL MADE BECAUSE OF THE PLAYER EVALUATION GRADES OF TOM MODRAK

You got a link to anything that says he was running the drafts as of 2002? I'm pretty sure that the GM runs the drafts and makes the final calls on the picks. That would have been TD, then Marv, then no one (maybe Modrak, maybe Dick, maybe Brandon), now Buddy Nix.

THE SCOUTS CAN ONLY GIVE THE GRADE, NOT MAKE THE PICK.

  21. After many years of Tom Modrak being in the organiztion and playing a vital role in our NFL Draft. I just fail to understand why he is still in the Bills organization. The Bills have had several blunders in the draft and in my opinion it continues. Last year taking Aaron Maybin over Bryan Orakapo DE was obviously not a swift move and it was easy to

realize from the onset that choosing a undersized Maybin was a bad selection when Orakapo was the consensus best DE in the draft by a good margin. Modrak has been a key to why the Bills pick who they do and this year choosing a RB over a OLT or QB was highly questionable in many fans and experts alike opinions. These are just two of many examples of his poor contributions to our drafts. Greg Williams wanted us to draft a QB that was available when the Bills made their first round selection when he was the head coach here. That QB is playing for New Orleans Saints now and is wearing a Super Bowl ring already!!!!!!!!!! Modrak didn't agree with Greg Williams and we all grew to despise Williams as a head coach. Looks like we despised the wrong guy! I am trying to remember when they took Mike Williams as OLT and if Tom Modrak was here at that time? I believe he was, and what a great (not) pick that turned out to be with the 4th overall selection in the draft.

My vote is yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Put it up on a banner for all to see!! Tom Modrak must go!!! Then maybe we'd draft a franchise QB for once instead of resorting to a 7th round pick to select a QB.

I hope this topic is a little different than what's been up and running lately as it's sure boring being a Bills fan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    0:) 2010 Bills prediction 5-11

You can't judge a scout - which is what Modrak is - based on picking the wrong player. You used only one example from the Inner Circle time, which is the only time he potentially could have had any important input into the actual selection. The other times - Clements over Brees, Williams instead of anyone, this past draft etc - were all when we had TD as GM or now Buddy Nix, who we have to assume made the final call on who we picked. That was the point of hiring a GM.

let's assume however for arguements sake that Modrak ran the draft in 2009 when we took Maybin et al. If he gets dinged for taking Maybin instead of Orakpo, does he also get credit for taking Byrd in round 2? How abot Levitre and Wood? What about Nleson? Those look like good picks now.

I think as fans, it's impossible for us to know the inner dynamics of the front office. We only know the overall outcome and product that gets put together - not who does what outside of the fact that it's all Buddy Nix's responsibility to make sure it works. If it doesn't then Nix takes the fall, not anyone else. With the Inner Circle approach, Modrak probably had more input than in previous years, so maybe some of those bad picks were his fault, but who are any of us to say that Dick, Brandon, or Ralph made those picks or at least had the final say?

Personally I like Modrak's record - he has had consistant success as a talent evaluator during his career and is thought of well by others in the league - but as I said above, it's impossible to say he's the problem or not from our perspective.

  22. I was all for trying to get him earlier.

He did not suck in Baltimore, he did well (but not great) in a few seasons in Baltimore, he got sick in the offseason and had to be replaced with Joe Flacco who lit it up as the starter and they couldn't go back to Smith. Smith was only moved to #2 because Flacco played even better and the team started winning more.

    Why not bring him in?

I might be wrong on this, but I don't think troy Smith ever went into a season as the starter for the Ravens. In fact I don't think he's played in more than a game or two.

I'm sure I'm in the minority, especially in this thread, but I don't think Smith could beat out Brohm for a spot on the roster. At this point, I'm pretty OK with letting the three guys we have duke it out for starts this year and focus on that next offseason. If you bring in another QB now, it makes it that much harder to get the other QBs prepared for the season, let alone Smith.
