At times it saved jobs, by gaining market share in a global economy, by fighting off competition from out side US border, of focusing on design and technology and give other the mondane work, of maintaining capital for good reason to be invested in expansion at home.
Wall Street insists in monitoring reduced costs, market share, ROI, inventory etc that supports your 401K. 26 year old MBAs on Wall Street judge companies by stock prices, not value, not the number of jobs they create or hold on to locally.
If employment is an important measurement over profit and performance, then sit still and think about the second most hated word to maga. Socialism.

Tax corporations that manufacture in China, put the money in the coffers. That will control Chinese growth, and nit harm US citizens and encourage business to return home.

I think you have misunderstood Canada. While you have in general hit the mark, we are more complicated wiyh English/French and perhaps surprisingly to you, less tolerant towards Muslim religion, more concerned about cultural change. You know, in the Reagan, Clinton era, the joining of 2 countries would have been possible. Today Canada hated Trudeau, but distrust trump more than even Trudeau. When our election occurs this month, regardless of the winner, Canada will likely head to Europe, Asia, China, India for trade, even South America. Trade opportunities gave already begun. Canada will cut our trade with US by 50%. Oil is already heading to China, LNG is heading to Europe effective June.
Even a trade deal will not change that, we already have a deal that Trump ignored.
