  1. I know Chan has said that he'd rather him Rushing the passer out of the RDE position, i think when he was asked if Merriman would play LB his answer was "I think not". What little I've seen of Merriman as a bill -- I thought he was much better pass rushing out of the motorcycle stance as opposed to having a hand in the ground.
  2. Can't wait to see Mario Williams' Power.Moves on the football field, you guys.
  3. Happy to see Bill Callahan also leave the AFC East to go coach for the Cowboys. I think that the limited success that the Jets offense did have should largely be attributed Callhan's blocking schemes. Tony Sporano is probably an upgrade over Shotty but I don't expect the Jet offense to improve until Sanchez improves his accuracy & decision making.
  4. Would have preferred us to sign Joique Bell of NOLA's practice squad. Not sure Choice is healthy....
  5. Haha, worse yet I just traded for him at the deadline! All I got while riding the Fred Ex Train was 1 game against Miami.
  6. I'd Fred ends up being out for the rest of the year I say we sign Joique Bell off NOLA's practice squad. We had him with us in 2010 till the iggles signed him off our practice squad. He is likely familiar with our terminology still and I was very impressed with what little I've seen of him when he got carries in the preseason this year.
  7. When Bell was healthy I thought he played well during the regular season. I hope he plays a bit, I'd like to evaluate him over the last few games of the season.
  8. I think it's a creative way to motivate the team for the game. No complaints here. Just like when REX named LT the "starter" two weeks ago against the chargers and then proceeded to give Shonn Greene 20 carries for 112 yards. I think the ploy both motivated the jets e.g., lets win one for LT and motivated Shonn Greene to run harder. It be great if professional players didn't need ploys to be motivated for a game, but that scenario is not the reality. Coaches try a lot of stuff e.g., Belichick paying players to start fights in practice, Shuffling the Bills O-line in the preseason, Sean Payton bringing in bball coach Avery Johnson as basically a consultant to motivate players during their superbowl run. I like a coach who thinks outside the box in terms of how to motivate players - not sure that Maybin as a captain will work though. My criticism of Rex Ryan is that he does it a bit too much through the media, but his overall W/L record has been good.
  9. Ahhh because I am an idiot. I changed the pole to reflect the accurate contract details. My bad.
  10. I realize that all of us would prefer the rational solution where the Bill's negotiate a contract that gives Fred Jackson some long-term financial security but doesn't force the organization to mortgage the future by tying them down to a bad contract. e.g, a four year deal w/ $15-20 Million guaranteed. But sometimes I think its useful to limit the discussion to the potential extreme outcomes. The way I see it -- each situation has a clear upside and downside. I left out some positives/negatives but feel free to include them in your answer. Situation 1 - The long-term mega contract: Upside: You lock up the most complete RB in football right now. Downside: Significant financial commitment to a RB on the wrong side of 30. Situation 2: - Make him play under the current agreement Upside: By Making him pay under a base salary of $1.75 Million. Theoretically you would have more money available to re-sign the Bills young core and bring in free agents. Also it limits your financial risk from a bad contract. Downside: A messy protracted holdout which results in either limited to below average production by Fred or you have to trade him for twenty cents on the dollar.
  11. I hear the argument for civic pride and I agree it. As a Bills fans I want to see them remain in Buffalo and would be happy to see tax payers finance there stadium re-build. I just feel like the economic justifications for a tax payer funded situation are murky at best. Obviously Buffalo benefits economically but its is also clear that there losers as well.
  12. Well that usually means I did a poor job of explaining. I'll try one more attempt. Basically lets assume you personally allocate $3000 dollars a year for your "entertainment consumption" because you like the bills you spend all of your entertainment budget on them. If the bills go away does where does that $3000 go, if you just stuck it under your mattress then its unproductive, and if a lot of people were like you and just took there money and went home (to put it under the mattress) you could justify subsidizing the bills. But I think the reality is you would just spend that money elsewhere, maybe go out to eat more often, maybe you'd rent on demand videos, maybe you invest that money and then a banker loans it out to small business in Rochester. You may be less happy cause your a Bills fans, but state revenues don't change at all. And someone will in fact be happier that his or her tax dollars aren't going to support a football team and instead maybe are being used to support their favorite Orchestra or something. There are plenty of way to encourage tourism across the board, and there is no evidence that subsidizing the Bills is any better than other competing ideas out there. e.g., why not reduce the sales tax across the board instead.
  13. To me your example is a zero-sum game. Yes the city of Buffalo benefits from all the tourist spending associated with Bills presence but those gains are offset elsewhere by reduced spending elsewhere. So while Bar's and restaurants near Ralph Wilson stadium see revenue increase -- those sales taxes don't neccessarily improve government coffers as they come at the expense of reduced spending elsewhere -- the reverse is bowling alleys in rochester, tourist destinations in Niagara lose of share of consumer spending revenue. Basically the size of the pie is more or less fixed, consumers will spend a fixed amount of dollars in NY State and all government subsidies will achieve is altering the size of the slice of pie each industry/region receives. You can argue that the Buffalo Bills generate a non-trivial amount of spending from regions outside of New York State e.g, Ontario but there its hard to prove that is the most efficient use of govt tax dollars, why not just subsidize flights to NYC from Toronto or better yet reduce state income taxed total take by $100 million so that the state's residents can decide what to do with the extra cash in their pockets. IMO Governments should not pick winners and losers. Ye subsidies can benefit a local region but its at the expense of another region, and more dangerously as if more and money pours into subsidizing the policy basically results in beggar by thy neighbor (basically regions just try and "steal tourists from each other" and stops producing any real value.
  14. Circumstances and production dictate that Maybin deserved to be cut. Would it surprise me if Maybin at age 23 developed into a useful situation pass rusher...? no, not really but it wouldn't of surprised me if he was out of league and in the CFL. Sometimes former busts put it together but I don't think you can fault the Bill's organization, Maybin had ample opportunities to prove he was more than a below average situational 3rd and long pass rusher.
  15. Just a few quick points: Authentic Jerseys are expensive because NFL auctions off monopoly licensing rights to companies. Reebok doesn't have to compete against Nike, Addidas, Under Armour etc., to sell and produce NFL products legally. In 2012, when Nike takes over the licensing agreement they will be granted the same privileges and will be able to charge prices above and beyond the cost of making the jersey because they are only game in town. Similarly New Era won the exclusive license auction process for hat wear. On a environmental level I'd like to see some evidence that similar goods produced by counterfeiter, are demonstrably harsher on the environment than legally manufactured goods in that same country. E.G., my guess is Reebok's manufacturing shop in China is identical to DHGates in terms of the environmental damages. From a human level, working conditions in developing conditions are deplorable compared to first world standards. However, there is evidence that jobs making T-shirts and Ipads are better alternatives than a life of rural/subsistence poverty. Standards of living by almost any measure and amongst any class of worker have improved dramatically in China and India.
  16. This is mere speculation on my part but the packers James Jones was unhappy after week 1: I think this guy has the talent and can run all the routes. IMO the packers 5th WR has the skill set to be a legitimate #1-2 option. Character questions aside, if he was available for a 5th round pick I'd make the trade.
  17. For me how the O-Line plays will be an important piece. Realistically the only player on the OL that I could winning or drawing individual battles throughout the season is Wood (and i'm not overly confident in that yet). I think Chan will be able to mask the deficiencies with 3 step drops and using backs and TE's to chip but long term this isn't a winning strategy. A championship teams needs an O-Line that can win battles at the Point of Attack. If 1 O-Lineman other than Wood (I'm thinking Bell, Levitre, or Hairston, but anyone would suffice) shows that they could be a capable piece going forward I would consider that progress. A couple others: Players drafted or signed as FA by the current brain trust contribute/develop e.g. I'm looking at you Spiller, Troupe, Chandler (essentially I just want some validation that on the whole Nix/Gailey are getting it right more than they are getting it wrong when making personell decisions) A few players emerge who could potentially be considered top 15 at their position. Right now we have 1 player there Kyle Williams. Will anyone join them this year e.g., at the end of the year can we legitimately say say so-and-so is our core and lets build around them. Failing all that: we get the #1 overall pick
  18. Hard to call him a "star" but he did take a team to the playoffs and win NFL comeback player of the year: Tommy Maddox
  19. while I congratulate him for completing the comeback, the fact that he can deliver this quote without any sense of irony is funny. ""Albert carries so much weight with him, there's a lot of young guys that look up to him," Williams told the Post. "But you got to be here. ... He's a grown man. With that comes responsibility. I think a lot of people say, 'Hey, you have a responsibility to this team.' There are a lot of other guys here that would like to be home. But obviously not, because there is a responsibility we have to this team." - Mike Williams
  20. ahaaha while I don't think the choice is that clear cut , I hear your sentiment. Anyway right now I think I'll take it the next step and go to the audition. If I don't make the cut its a funny story, if I do make the cut I'll have re-think the issue again.
  21. So I was having Lunch in Toronto yesterday and a women comes up to me and tells me she is a casting agent, anyway long story short but an actor just quit a show, and she felt like my looks would be right for the part. I tell her her I have never acted before, but we exchange contact information. Anyway, she sends me an audition script for the role I'd be playing, a link to the website of the show and a blurb/backstory of the character she wants me to audition for. The audition is Monday. The show is part of cinemax's afterdark lineup, and as best I can tell it the dialogue, plot and story line only exist so that during every show the cast members can hook up during a scene. In her email she specifies "NO Frontal Nudity" but I may have to show my ass, take my shirt off and simulate other acts. Women are often topless in the show. The pay is "550$" dollars a day, I imagine the shoots are pretty long each day (16Hrs maybe). the positives and negatives as best I can see it. Negatives: * Well its soft core porn. * I have never acted before but if seeing myself on camera, or hearing myself on voice mails is any indication I'm a pretty exceptionally awkward person. Nor do I have any ambition of being an actor, so its not like this would be my first break which would hopefully lead me to a bigger and better things. I can't stress this enough - I can't act. * I have a BA in Economics, I'm currently working in my field and waiting to hear back from grad school. So I'm not in a desperate situation. * this could be the type of thing that haunts you as you get older, either extremely embarrassing for you/family and it could interfere with future job prospects. *the most realistic scenario to me is I show up for the audition and get cut cause I can't act. Also I'm pretty average looking guy I don't think I have ever been considered a hottie by anyone. Basically I was surprised as Sh*T when this woman asked me/ this type of thing hasn't happened to me before and I doubt ever will in the future. Positives: * well its soft core porn, the sheer hilarity factor alone has to be worth something * the most likely scenario I audition, I get cut, still leaves me with a pretty funny story to tell people. And I'll never wonder "what if" I had tried my luck in soft core porn. * the show starts shooting in mid may and they must be pretty desperate to fill the character if they are approaching people on the street, I guess the actor playing the part pulled out last minute, so if I have any advantage at all in the part its that there really desperate and won't be able to find the most qualified candidates. * the microscopic chance and we're talking a the smallest probability imaginable like 0.0001% that (1) I make the show (2) the show achieves even a moderate level of success (by cinemax after dark standards), and some how opens another opportunity for me. I've always believed in keeping your options open and feel like I should practice what I preach, but when I said keep options open I never imagined one of those options to be soft core porn. Any Thoughts? oh yeh in case anyone is wondering I just turned 25, recently moved to Toronto and I am single. ************** UPDATE ************************ Hey first of I just wanted to thank the wall for there input, I ended up going to the audition. And man was I awful at it. First things first it was a pretty legit casting agency, they had several projects going on the day auditions for the show, advertisements etc. Also HBO Canada`s name was at the bottom of all the release forms I signed Honestly and embarrassingly enough the first thing I noticed like 5-6 guys who were really good looking, looked like they worked out daily etc all holding the same script I had. Next I had to sign a consent form, and indicate I was comfortable with frontal nudity on camera. This was a surprise to me given that I was told by the casting agent specifically `no frontal nudity`anyway I guess they say what they need to to get people in. I signed the form anyway. So first things first went to a room and was photographed in boxer briefs, after that was done I went back into the room. Anyway I chatted with the guy to my left who also had not acted before, he was a sports fan so we riffed on the NHL playoffs and made fun jokes about being auditioning for soft core porn. I passed up several opportunities to read through my script with someone figuring just winging it would be the best (note to self horrible idea). Anyway I finally get called in to read, there are 3 people with notepads in front of them (2 serious looking men and one women), a camera man and an attractive women. we chat a little bit about this I tell them its my first audition etc, make a few jokes get a few laughs over all starting to feel comfortable. The next they they do is explain to me how audition will work, and that it will be filmed etc. Then all of the sudden the good looking women turns to me and says `hey is Lacey in` I slowly realize in horror that that she has just said the first lines of the script I was supposed to commit to memory, after a long pause the first words out of my mouth are `I can`t do this`not as the script should of read `shes not here yet, should`be in round 10.` Everyone is basically stunned and stare at me in shock then they tell me I can do the audition reading from the script, I hastily say yes. I cannot overstate how stupid I looked the very first words out of my mouth were I can`t do this!!!! Can`t believe I panicked like that anyway They hand me the script we take it for the top again, we re do it from the top. I noticed it took people about 15-20 minutes to audition, after I finished the scene the guy in charge told me `well now you can tell people you have auditioned for something`meaning there is no way in hell your getting this part. I laughed and thanked them for the opportunity. My audition couldn`t have been longer than 5 minutes. When I was outside the casting agent who inivited me asked me how it went I said horrible, she laughed and asked if should still contact me about other roles I said yes but I think she was just being nice. All in all, glad I went. I guess I should have put some more work in memorizing my lines, anyway I`m not sure who has the rights to video tape of my audition but I hope it gets burned cause not only was I horrible I`m also wearing this cheesy tank top. Lots of good looking chicks there, but nothing spectacular.
  22. the title is grossly misleading, seriously shameful title.
