  1. For some reason, I doubt it's just Dell doing this... CW
  2. The power cable to my laptop has become frayed, so it only works if you hold it in the right position. Needless to say, that seems way too dangerous for my tastes, so I've stopped using it. So I looked at Dell's site for a replacement and they want $54 BEFORE SHIPPING for the damn thing! That's more than 10% of what I paid for the whole laptop two years ago! What a ripoff.... Anyone have a power cable for an Inspiron 1100 laying around that they don't need anymore. I'll happily give you a copy of every Bills DVD I have for it. http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/product...9&page=external Ok, done venting; eBay has them slightly cheaper, but not by much. Guess I'll have to bite the bullet and buy one pretty soon. CW
  3. That was before I talked to the VP of IT here who said it crashed. However, even with the crashing, he says he really likes it a lot... And has been using it for over a year. CW
  4. I guess I'll consider myself lucky that nobody ever begs me for money when I go to the movie theater... Then again, maybe the theater in my basement would've been done by now if that had happened. CW
  5. Keep in mind that the ones that record onto DVD record poorer quality than those that record to tape. See my previous message This thread covers it as well: http://groups-beta.google.com/group/rec.vi...4b010526f9ae245 CW
  6. I'm assuming these are MiniDV or D8 tapes? I'm basing my post on this fact. First, you need to be aware that taking the info off of the tape and onto DVD will compress the video -- a lot! MiniDV is roughly 4 gigabytes for 15 minutes, and a blank DVD-R disk only holds ~4 gigs of data. Also, DVD-R (and CD-R) media does not last forever. The dyes in the media can deteriorate over time and you won't be able to read the data. Why are you trying to capture this data off of tape? Are you trying to edit? Or is this just as a backup? If it's just as a backup, consider backing up to harddrive so you keep the original quality intact. That said, for capturing I *highly* recommend Scenalyzer Live! -- http://www.scenalyzer.com/ - it's cheap and works extremely well, splitting the files up into "scenes" either based on the timecode or base on optical changes in the video. Very nice. As for editing, I really like Ulead MediaStudio Pro, but it's not cheap. You might want to look at Ulead VideoStudio, since it's probably just a stripped down version. Pinnacle is ok, but I've heard it has some bugs and crashes quite a bit. If you have any questions, let me know. CW
  7. You're in school right now, but I doubt you're 21 and broke. My wife's doing her MBA program right now, but it's not the same as when you first start an undergrad program. Yes, it's $2. What's your point? If I buy a ticket to a movie, I don't expect the theater to then ask for for $2 so that they can buy a new screen. If I buy a ticket to an amusement park, I don't expect the park to ask me for $2 before every ride. I never said it'd bankrupt anyone, but considering how much debt the students are already in, asking them to give even more (on top of the yearly tuition increases of 10-20%) is just assinine. CW
  8. This has nothing to do with caring for other people. It's irresponsible to increase tuition 10-20% a year, and then turn around and ask for a voluntary donation that will put the students even further in debt. It's especially ludicrous when there are probably quite a few programs that could be axed to save a bunch of money. For example, at the University of Minnesota there's a "General College" program. You know what it is? It's a program for people who aren't good enough to get into the "regular" college. Basically, a way for students who sucked in high school to be able to pump up their grades and then apply to get into the regular program. That program sucks a TON of money from the U, but it wasn't cut because people were crying that the "less priviledged need to go to school too." Guess what? Go to a technical college. Go to a two year program. Why should the college support mediocrity when there are other options that those types of students can use? But it was never cut, and tuition was consantly raised, a large portion which was used to keep GC up and running. At least they didn't have the audacity to ask me for a donation while I was going to school as well. It's obvious that you've been out of college for awhile. CW
  9. Welcome to the Redundant Office of Redundancy. CW
  10. No, didn't mean it as a slam at all; sorry if it came off that way! My main point was that it can't really be stopped, as long as sites are giving free registration. CW
  11. I've posted about this before. Definately a good site; and it's hard to block because as soon as they clean out some addresses, all it takes is one person to create another one and enter it into bugmenot.com. Another great spam-dodging site is http://www.dodgeit.com. Use that site for email addresses for websites you need to sign up for (that aren't covered by bugmenot.com). You can use anything and it accepts it as a valid address. You can't reply to message from it. CW
  12. Exactly. And I find it irresponsible for the University to be asking for the money in the first place. Shouldn't the student put that $2 towards their OWN education first? The blood drive isn't a good comparison, because blood is free. In a time when a large percentage of our country is in heavy debt, why try guilting people into going deeper into debt? I have no problem with the schools asking alumni for money; but undergrads? If you have a job and are paying taxes, you're ALREADY donating money to tye school. I just find it tacky, tasteless and irresponsible. CW
  13. http://www.cnn.com/2005/EDUCATION/02/07/un...s.ap/index.html Let's force undergrads to not only go into major dept PAYING for their tuition, but ask them to donate even more so that they can go further into debt. At the same time, we'll increase tuition 10% a year. CW
  14. Dammit, I said the same thing, only posted it 4 minutes later. CW
  15. I find the hypocricy of this board amazing... You're trying to tell me that everyone who is complaining about Milloy here would rather work for $50,000/year at a company that's regarded as the best in the country than work for $100,000/year at a copmany that is comparable and will give you more recognition for your work? If you say yes to that, you're lying. CW
  16. This was brought up yesterday, and from what I remember it was determined that a player CAN give themselves up and end the play (if I recall, that happened on a Monday night game last year). This is usually done to call a timeout quickly. However, regardless of what the real rule is, it was stated that the whistle had blown when the guy went down so the play is dead. Not sure why the clock kept going, but hey. CW
  17. Definately Eagles. They had homefield each of those three years and couldn't do it. At least we always got it done at home. Plus, we were underdogs for 3 out of 4 of the Superbowls. The Eagles were favored in all three of their NFC Championship games. CW
  18. Agreed! They killed Deja.com That said, the map program actually has my road on it (as of a few months ago, none of them, including MS Streets and Trips, did). However, it's nearly impossible to zoom in on a specific location. I did driving directions (which also isn't as intuititive to enter in as mapquest.com), and wanted to zoom in on my house from them. I had to do it in 10 small steps - zoom, center, zoom, center. Rather annoying... CW
  19. I know you're being sarcastic, but for those who believe that crap remember that Vick and Culpepper were tied for 2nd most sacks in the NFL. And to the people who say, "Yeah, but that's because they run and get hit for a one yard loss and that counts as a sacl," note that Vick lost the 3rd most yards in the NFL and Culpepper lost the 7th most yards in the NFL on sacks. Bledsoe didn't even make the top 10 for yards lost.
  20. "Hey... Stop Stabbing Me!" was a great indy film. VERY funny. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...&s=dvd&n=507846 The cover doesn't convey anything about the movie -- it has nothing at all to do with scream, and the creator has no idea why the studio made that cover. Highly recommended. CW
  21. It's not so funny when the RIAA/MPAA comes knocking on your door for downloading music/movies illegally. Guess who would be blamed? CW
  22. Be sure to enable WEP.... Or whatever new wireless security protocol G has (I think it has one, but I can't remember and havn't looked it up). CW
  23. Buy an 802.11g card -- 55mbps. I like Linksys personally, but DLink, 3Com, etc all make good stuff. Buy an 802.11g router/access point. Make sure you enable WEP (wired equivelency protocol) on the router so that your data is encrypted and so others can't hop onto your network. Change your WEP key at least once a month, preferrably once every couple of weeks. It's a pain, but wireless networks are NOT secure. http://www.fezam.com/security CW
  24. Whereas I sit down in front of my TV whenever I want during the week following a game and can watch highlights from any game I want, instantly... Dude, you really need DirecTV. No, really. CW
  25. As an aside, I still find it extremely unfair that the Vikings and Rams pick before we do. The playoff teams should always be the last 12 teams to pick... CW
