Um.. No. Nothing like Kemp/Lamonica. Reich was a fine back up. Period. He wasn't traded. The bills let him leave. He never panned out as a starter.
-
:thumbsup:I agree, he would be lucky to be average today. But it is unfair to compare any athlete from that far back to today's. How would Jim Thorpe do at the Olympics!
But he was as good as there was back then.
-
Sestak was great in his day, he was not known as a speed guy. Not sure he would make much of an impact in today's NFL.
-
Ya think?I'm not sure if that's sacrcasm or not (tough to tell sometimes). At any rate as a New Orleanian and someone that follows them pretty closely there is a 0.0% chance of him being made available.

Hell yes, another personality never gain to be found in the NFL.Can we invite some Lions fans still carrying the Bobby Layne torch to this party?

What a great era of football; the American Football League. I was fortunate enough to see every team in the AFL play at War Memorial, a different time for sure.

Powell started off the 67 season on fire then injured his knee and never recovered, but he was the premier AFL wide out at the time. Tom Flores and Art Powell connected explosively in the first game an NFL Team visited the ole rockpile for a preseason game. The game (Eagles) had intensity and was competitive until Tom Flores injured his throwing arm and never recovered. I woefully admit that as a young ten year old who collected trading cards and loved the AFL, thought we got the deal.I was just going to leave this thread alone, given how inaccurate rcatty and others memory is. Thankfully, you and Utah John showed up with facts. Powell was an All-Star. At the time of the trade, it seemed to most that the Bills fleeced the Raiders. Ya just never know how things will turn out. Bass caught a TD pass in SBII and injuries kept Flores from seeing the field in Buffalo. Collier, the acknowledged architect of the Safety Blitz, lead the Bills to the AFL Championship game -at home, only to lose to KC for entry into 'SBI'. Rauch was a good coach for Oakland, but Al wanted to promote Madden. Rauch was more 'reknown' for gutting a still talented roster than the folly of decoying Juice.
For you old timers, the Bills - Eagles preseason game was awesome, never seen an exhibition game played in that manner again. Playoff atmosphere in August, Tom Flores gets hurt after burning up the field with Art Powell, the sellout crowd boo's Jack Kemp as he enters the game. Kemp responds by throwing an immediate 60 yard TD strike to Albert Dubenion to turning boo's into a standing ovation.

The GM was Harvey Johnson, who coached the Bills in 68 and 71 with horrendous results; two victories combined.

He was involved with "someone's" wife, and they used to meet in Dunkirk at the Holiday Inn, according to a bartender working there at the time.
My father was close friends with an Assistant Coach at the time and verified Lamonica's extracurricular activities. However, Flores was coming off a solid year and Art Powell was a great WR at the time, Bills felt they needed offense.Worst "trade" ever. Got Art Powell (later traded to Miami) and Tom Flores. Nothing.
Also "heard" from an inside source that Lamonica was known to be a "bit to friendly" with wives of executive leadership...

 :thumbsup:The trade was the start of the demise of the franchise. Heretofore we were a cutting edge team, with great drafting, top-notch coaching, and even some innovation (yes, we had the first ever soccer style kicker in Pete Gogolak). Once Lou Saban left we were finished. Joel Collier took over, and that began the slide to more than a decade of awful coaches, and drafting.
I was a teenager in those days, and didn't quite realize that we just had out pockets picked by a coach from Oakland named Al Davis. Davis would go on to distinguish himself as cutting edge, and we would be left on the cutting room floor.
I still get sick when I see highlights of Lamonica throwing 70 yard bombs that connected. Worse yet, I get doubled up in agony when I hear the term "mad bomber". Ouch.. all of this still hurts, and its only been almost half a century. "Honey, where did you put the Pepto Bismol" !!!!

I lived through that and watched it for years after the fact; painful, very painful.
-
Watch him throw that last three games, his long balls are high and wobbly, duck balls.According to Bill Polian, Peyton's arm strength is just fine.
-
Great post, I too think his arm is slowly fading, but he can still beat you. I hope he retires at the end of the season avoiding a painful season when his arm is really finished. To my eyes, Peyton looks like he's loosing his arm strength as the season wears on. He's by no means washed up, but he's in serious decline mode.
Just for fun, I was wondering how many passes a QB has in his arm... if that could be some predictor of how long the great ones can play?
Manning is currently just over 9,000 pass attempts for his career. When Favre retired, he was just over 10,100 (although as I recall his last few years were tough to watch as he was loosing his ability to throw the deep ball).
Brady, you ask, is currently just over 7,100 attempts. Considering he's 2years behind Manning in playing time, I'd say he's right about where he should be. If my stupid analysis has any merit at all, he's got about 3 good years left before we see his arm start failing him.
Also, if there is any validity to this notion at all... I'd say the last thing Peyton needs to do is work hard all off season and prepare even more. Just the opposite, I say he needs to rest that arm and use it as little as possible in the off season.

Keep dreaming! For everyone saying the Bills aren't a playoff caliber team because they didn't make the playoffs, do you not understand the distinction? Or do you think that there is only one "championship caliber" team every year?
Reality! Thank you.Had we won out and finished 10-6, missing the playoffs due to tie breakers, I could agree that we were a playoff caliber team that needs tweaks and a little luck next year.
But, as it turns out, we're pretty much a rock solid 8-8 team that's missing the playoffs because they still got a ways to go.
-
My opinion is they are not a playoff caliber team and still far from it, they have no offense, poor coaching, poor drafting, and a weak FO.I know, they didn't make the playoffs and I'm as bitter as anyone else. It's beyond frustrating to see us waste such a great defensive performance and see our offense under-achieve with this coaching staff.
However....
For the first time in a long time, I can honestly say that we are a playoff caliber team. It's not that we are going to finish close to a playoff record. It's that, we all know that the Texans and Chiefs games were ones that we absolutely should have won. In fact, if we played them again 10 more times, I believe we absolutely would have.
We lost, I get it. We aren't in the playoffs, I get it. But this team, absolutely could have made it in this year regardless of all the crap we saw and it wouldn't be a stretch. It's not like previous years of, well if we could have just had 2 more wins or something like that. We not only could have had two more wins, we absolutely should have those two wins.
Maybe this is coming off stupid, but it makes sense in my mind right now. And it's something I haven't been able to think or feel in a long time.
With that, fire Hackett. If Marrone won't, then fire him too. Trade for a QB or sell the farm for a rookie in the first round. And resign this defense with whatever it takes.
We are there. We really are.
Finally some reality. :thumbsup:We lost to a 2-12 team. This is not a playoff caliber team
We will likey get smoked by the Pats* this weekend in a game that's means absolutly zip
Someone else who lives in Realville. :thumbsup:The Bills are absolutely NOT a playoff caliber team. The offense is pathetic, and there is little hope of it getting much better this off season.
The defense and special teams are playoff caliber, but everything on the offensive side of the ball from coaches to players, with the exception of a couple players, are not.
How can you make a statement about the Bills being "there" with that offense, no QB, and no first round pick this draft?
-
 :thumbsup:I apologize to the D, but this team needs to clean house. This offense is far away.
Absolute needs:
QB
TE
LG
RG
Sorry, you don't 4 quality starters, including a QB in one off-season, especially when we don't pick until the 40s.
Frankly, it would have to be a hell of an off-season to get this team to championships calibre.
I don't mean start trading away our young talent, but they need a new direction in management.

 This is a failed organization - total failure - tear it down and start again.I can't go down the Sullivan/Carrucci path of looking at plays or individual players or coaches anymore. After 15 years, it's time to recognize that there is a greater pattern. Questions:
On what planet do you fail for as long as he has and keep your job?
Why is he the only Pres in the AFC East without an Ivy League graduate degree? How many other team Presidents in the NFL are running teams with their bachelors degrees?
How did a bachelors degree from St. John Fischer, some experience with the Marlins, and 9 years with the bills make him qualified to run an NFL franchise?
How many hours and dollars did he spend on the Toronto deals which could have been spent trying to make the team better?
Why have we hired more head coaches than any team (except Raiders) since 2000?
Why have we not been able to hire a head coach with a winning record?
Why is the team winning less than 40% of its games during his tenure?
How do prospects feel about coming to play for a guy with this track record, who has the same education level as they do?
I'm sure Ive missed some details, but the point is, the guy is grossly under qualified with a long track record of failure. I think he had RW brainwashed, and I hope Pegula asks the hard questions about Mr. Brandon. It's time to have this team run professionally.
And your source for this is????You are. The trade was consummated on the phone between Whaley and Farmer. They'd had a couple prior conversations. I don't care if Brandon was on the phone with someone in Cleveland or not. Brandon did not conceive of the trade, negotiate the trade, or close the deal. That doesn't mean it all happened in a vacuum. Like most decisions in most war rooms, it was a consensus agreement. But Whaley owns it.
None of that has much to do with my point, though. Which is simply, in what world does the team president NOT be in attendance in the war room to take part in the process as those he's hired specifically for this function perform those tasks?
For some strange reason I can't fathom, a certain segment of our fan base HAS to believe Brandon micromanages every single aspect of the operation when nothing is farther from the truth. Ask the people you know in that building and they'll tell you RB is a serial delegater. He very well may NOT want to own some of the poor decisions of the past and that's WHY he delegates so much.
GO BILLS!!!

Watching him play the last few weeks, it appears his arm is gone. Watch the passes he is throwing, some are duck balls, wobbly and high, up for grabs. I think this is his last year, too bad, one of the greats.
-
Could not agree more, however, this is another reflection of the organizational failures over the last 15 years. Poor coaching, weak FO, etc.I know he was one strike away and all, but this guy may well be one of the dozen greatest RBs of all time when it's all said and done (yes, I'm reacting a bit to his amazing 79 yard td run last night). Obviously, hindsight is 20-20, but we got virtually nothing for him and - with apologies to Fred - he's at least twice as good as any Bill offensive player since Kelly, Thomas, and Wolford. The last guy who came even remotely close was Moulds. And of course Lynch was pretty darn good his first two seasons with the Bills.

Watching the Bills pathetic running game this season, I can onlly say grr ...

This is a joke? :Dsomeone may need to be drug tested, step back and follow my finger

I can really identify with this post, sat in the ole rockpile and watched the Bills get bombed by KC on 1 January 1967 blowing a chance at the first SB.Same ****, different year. It doesn't matter who is in charge, we still suck each year. I've been watching them suck since 1963 and it doesn't get any better with age. The Superbowl years were an aberration, a fluke and only because of Bill Polian. Ralph fired him too and told Wade to play Porcelain Rob instead of Flutie. Here we sit broken hearted, another year wasted should have partied.

Been hearing this since 1999; we are now excited over a meaningful game in December and breaking .500.For a Bills fan this was not a bad season, as Bills seasons have gone so far this century. We won two more games than we are use too. Plus we had a pretty good defense to watch. I think the odds of us finding a Franchise type QB for next season are as slim as the Sabres having a winning season this year. But I do believe we have a good chance of keeping this defense together for next year. And I think between Free Agency and the Draft we can find some decent Guards and upgrade our running game. So things may be looking up for next season. Maybe we win 10 games next year.

Never underestimate the posts you find on this board.Unquestionably the dumbest thread in weeks.
They have owned the team for a couple of months, they greaatly overpaid for a team in a small market and you see evidence that they don't care about winning?
give it a chance!

This is one of the most ill-informed posts here of all-time, and there have been some doozies.
