  1. It's because there is a difference between drafting/evaluating, and team-building. Just because Nix can scout doesn't necessarily mean he knows how to run an organization and re-build a team. This offseason provided some concerns. The switch to the 3-4 was ill-advised, and then, when they scrapped it mid-season, many of their draftees took on diminshed roles. And Nix's self-stated plan to sit out the free agency period was exposed as a mistake when it became clear that the roster had much more holes than one draft could fill. There are also real questions about his choice of DC.

    First Chan picked his coaches

Second the free agnecy this past year was very limited due to ending of the labor agreement

Third they didn't scrap the 3/4 they tried every d front available to try to stop the run due to both lack of talent and injuries

  2. I am not saying that CJ Spiller is going to be the next Great Bills back but if you look into Bills history you will find that his rookie season avg. ypc 3.9 is the same as both OJ and Joe Cribbs. This intrigued me so I then did some more digging. I remember looking at Spiller's college highlight reel shortly after the draft last year and being very impressed. At the time that was that and I was done. Through the course of this season my brother in law, who watches alot of college football, has been suprised at C.J.'s lack of success. He thought he was one of the greatest college running backs of all time. So I decided to reinvestigate youtube.com/watch?v=5qMzVNKp2tw take a look at OJ college running style and compare it to CJ college running style . Spiller is not as powerful as OJ but it is the changing of gears and gallop that are very similar. Perhaps CJ just needs a season or two to adjust to the NFL and in the mean time Freddy J is alot like Thurman. I think we as Bills fans are really spoilled with our rich lineage of running backs. Even the backs we discard other teams have coveated. Think about the long line of good to great backs:

Cookie Gilchrist, OJ Simpson, Joe Cribbs, Greg Bell, Thurman Thomas, Antowain Smith, Travis Henry, Willis McGahee, Marshawn Lynch, Fred Jackson, CJ Spiller???? everyone but Spiller is a 1000 yd rusher. I just don't think we should be so quick to throw in the towel on CJ. Even our change of pace backs historically have been high round draft picks that another team would use as a feature back. See Robb Ridick, Kenneth Davis, Ronnie Harmon if CJ falls into this categorie but is still a major contributor he is not a wasted pick. I think he will be a star though lets give him a season or two.

    agreed

  3. Marty Shottenheimer was talking to Peter King about his days In S.d . One of the things he mentioned is how Buddy was the Go to guy when it came to evaluating players for the draft . He said the A.j relied heavily on Buddy for all matters on draft day . He basically said no one is better at evaluating players then Buddy Nix. Take it for what it is worth, form your own opinions. That said I think Buddy is doing a great job. Look at all the talent brought in either through undrafted Free agents or through the waiver process. While the Bills are still lacky in several areas the top to bottom quality is greatly improved in his first year. Can't wait to see what he does in his first offseason after having a year to evaluate his current talent.

  4. Newton is a better athlete ,and has a much stronger arm then tebow so he is going very high. I would not be shocked if he is the pick.

Not sure how I feel about personally. I really want to fix the defensive front 7 can't stand another year of the team getting run over.

My guess is if the Bills win this weekend he will be gone before they draft.

  5. My two cents

Matt Spleath Tight End large and can block also can do a little damage as a reciever

Willie Colon Coming off an Injury but would give the Bills a solid vet at the right tackle position

Both these guys are from Pittsburgh so Haley knows them well

Marcus Spears would be a solid run stopping DE Again coming of an injury so will see or John Jolly if he is allowed back into the league , he is a beast against the run

another name to keep on eye on Jerome Clary right tackle from S.d. Not sure how he is grading out this year but it is a need and Buddy knows him well

If they could fill TIght end and Right Tackle in free agency that would be a big help heading into the draft

Also seemed like Chan loved the Miami nose tackle who is also a free agent. Signing him would allow them to move WIlliams all over the D line looking for matchups to expliot

    flame away

  6. Or, you make a Hershel Walker-type trade with someone dumb enough to do it.

Problem is that Brian Moorman is our Hershel Walker.

    not anymore lol

    This is how you draft:

    2001: RD1 Richard Seymour RD2 Matt Light

    2002: RD1 Daniel Graham RD2 Deion Branch

2003: RD1 Ty Warren (our pick) RD2 Eugene Wilson

    2004: RD1 Benjamin Watson RD2 Marquise Hill

    2005: RD1 Logan Mankins

    2006: RD1 Laurence Maroney RD2 Chad Jackson

    2007: RD1 Brandon Meriweather

Those are all of the drafts from when Bill Belichik took over up to their undefeated season. Notice that he solidified the lines first and then started to add the skill players behind them. Of course it helps getting one of the best QBs ever in Round 6 but that is neither here nor there. Also notice he hadn't taken an LB in the top two rounds in these years. He picked Mayo in the first round in 2008 but none before that. He prefers experienced LB's in his system. Draft the lines and try to plug the LB corps with some vets. I'd also try and bring in a vet TE that can make a difference in the passing game and draft one high in the next draft.

I get what you are saying but there are a awfully lot of misses . Brady covers up a lot of sins

So the Pats DID draft a running back in there somewhere in the 1st round.....

And here I thought the bills were the only stupid team to do something like that....:)

every draft is different . Stack the board and take the best player that fits your style of play.

Thinking that these guys get it and moving forward we will have some very productive drafts

  7. Best teams in football

    in no order

    Pats

    Colts

    Steelers

    Ravens

    Phila

    Ggreen bay

    S.d

    kc

    Jets ugh

    Atlanta

just wondering were you see a team that was built in anyway but the Draft .

Even the Jets Mangold, Bbrick,Revis,Harris ,Sanchez all draft picks

Free agency is a suckers play in the NFL\\

The one thing they all have is good to outstanding qb play

  8. Take a look at what Peppers has done for the Bears. And Dansby has been unstoppable for the Dolphins. Who do I think could make a similar difference for the Bills? David Harris. Will we go after him? Of course not.

unstoppable ona 7 win team that just lost tot Cinn, Det and Buffalo . Peppers was not coming here last year.

  9. Ok so you have the Buffalo News' musings that Walker didn't like the switch to LT as evidence that he was a "cancer."

Here is a more reasonable surmise: once he was benched, the OBD bean counters saw to it that he was released. Why? Because a few million dollars looks better in Ralph's pocket than ensuring depth at critical positions.

It's been the same story year after year after year. Yet every time the subject comes up, a few tired folks around here trot out the Walker, Dockery, Tripplett and Owens contracts as "evidence" that Ralphy isn't cheap. Never mind that all of those players were subsequently released with no capable replacements in the fold.

You go ahead and think what you want. Keep buying tickets and merchandise with the confidence that Ralph will spend the money to make this team competitive. At some point, you have to wonder if Bills fans get what they deserve.

again what free agents do you want to buy, and how does that work for the DEADSKINS. I ask again name we the big buys from the Pats, Colts and Steelers or Chargers for that matter

you build a team thru the draft, you keep the players that excel and move the average players for cheaper replacements. This is how it is done. The team is a mess because Dick Jauron had a misguided belief that you win with small and quick players problem is the league moved away from that 5 years ago

Langston Walker you have to be kidding me

  10. There seems to be lots of Defensive talent in this years draft and we need lots of it.

That being said if we pick 2nd and Carolina is Stupid enough to not draft Luck we absolutely grab him, no doubt about it. He would be a can't miss stud in the NFL and he can learn from Fitz.

If Carolina takes Luck then we go Defense end, DT or try to move down 1 spot or two and stock an extra pick.

agreed never pass on a quater like luck, that said if Carolina did pass they would certainly trade the pick for a boat load of draft picks

  11. What is your source that Walker was a "cancer," other than some rumblings that he wasn't psyched about being asked to play a position he was physically incapable of playing?

all I have are the Rumblings , that said Lanston Walkers release is what your hanging your hat on.

I would be very interested in how the three dominate teams in the AFC rarley chase free agents and in fact even let high priced veterns leave

  12. BKC, that's just amazing.

Please explain to me why, in your view, Langston Walker was outright released last offseason. Not why he was demoted, but why he was released. Let's start there.

Walker had a bad attitude from day one last season. He wanted no part of being the left tackle and made it known. Once they pulled the plug on the move the dumped him. Could he have played a better Right tackle then we saw last year sure, but not much better. He sealed his fate when he became a cancer. If it was about money then you could name some other dead weight that they keep eyar after year. Stroud come to mind.

You guys are funny , the Nfl is not a free agent league. Free agents are nice to add to the puzzle when you have other pieces in place. It is rare that you get a Drew Brees situation. The key is to draft well and then resign your Talent.

Name me the big time free agents the Pats, Colts, Steelers sign.

  13. It's guaranteed the Bills will have a top 10 spot in the coming draft. I've seen mocks and posts that mention a number of different players at different positions for our first pick.

I'm compiling a list of players that I would be happy with the Bills drafting. Understanding that some wont fall to us, but at least a few have to. I know that between now, the combine, and the draft, there will be players that fall out of the first round and others that move up. So this list is far from perfect, nor is it permanent.

I've 8 choices down so far. Any input on the last 2 spots, or better yet your own Top 10 list, would be appreciated.

    In no particular order:

    1. Andrew Luck

    2. Cam Newton

    3. Ryan Mallett

    4. Nick Fairley

    5. Da'Quan Bowers

    6. Gabe Carimi

    7. Marcell Dareus

    8. Anthony Castonzo

    9.

    10.

    11. Bonus spot if the team was already stacked: AJ Green. I think he will be the next Moss, and be able to make game-changing plays on a regular basis. Luxury pick given our needs up front, but we'd be wise not to put anything past this organization.

Edit: Free Agency and any Trade Downs are not part of this discussion.

can not see Carimi being a top ten pick

even though not a postion of need green and peterson are big time play makers

  14. Agreed!

If there is one thing Chan knows, it's QBs. And Edwards looked good through camp and preseason before it came time to actually perform and then he turtled. Chan saw it happen twice and that is all he needed to see.

with no one hitting him Edwards probably looks amazing in practice. No way Chan could have known what a mess he was until he saw it for himself. Fitz is solid enough to get youto the playoffs ,
