Hoecht is obviously not available for six games.  Even when he returns, he's something of a unicorn as a 310 lb defensive end.  He times fast, but I can't believe he's going to be more than a power rusher.  Besides Solomon the rest of the defensive ends on the Bills roster, are scrubs; Paris Shand and Hayden Harris. Those two are extreme long shots to make the roster, so discounting them, and not counting Hoecht at the start of the season, Solomon is the fifth DE.  There is a decent chance, the Bills will carry 5 DEs.  If they do, Solomon will be the guy.

How much playing time he gets is very much up in the air.  Epenesa has been solid, but not a difference maker.

I think Hoecht is in the 270 pound range now - after watching him say so during his Cover 1 interview.

So much rests on Coleman, imo.  I feel like Samuel will have a much better season if he's healthy and he & Palmer can be the good 3rd & 4th options we need. Shakir is ever-reliable.

I don't think Coleman will be elite, but he showed some flashes before he was hurt last year of having a decently high ceiling.  He needs to become that 6-8 catch per week guy.

    Here's hoping.

6-8 catches a week? That would break franchise records. This kind of unrealistic approach will lead to constant disappointment.

I was thinking about the critique of small linebackers this morning, and Jack Lambert came to mind.  Didn’t weigh more than 210 but one of the all time greats.  Of course he had the Steel Curtain in front of him.

That's a tough comp because it's all relative. I think back then most of the players were at least 15-20% lighter at most positions than they are now.

No I don't think they have. But when a 2nd round talent at a position of need might be available in the 5th, no harm in doing their due diligence on him. I don't know the specifics but it doesn't sound like the concerns are criminal in nature. The comparison has been to Jermaine Burton. So you have to figure out if he is going to skip NFL practices like Burton has done which means he's not worth drafting in any round, or can his personality be managed enough to take a flyer on him.

Even if the Bills decide he's worth a 5th round flyer, you know teams like KC don't apply the same rigorous rules as Beane would. There's no way he makes it past Round 3 unless there's a LOT more under the surface.

  5. I think many of you are being too harsh on the coaches for that specific game. When you lose (arguably) your best defensive player of an already statistically tepid defense, there's only so much you can do. I thought the D, given their state, did a good enough job in allowing the Bills offense to go win the game. They tried playing more man, caused a couple critical takeaways but simply didn't have the horses. It wasn't ideal but in these playoff matchups of best on best, I'd 100% be happy with giving Josh and the offense the ball to go tie or win the game. Every time.

Just curious, but aside from his health concerns, what makes you think he might not be a good fit?

I'd say it's primarily his injuries. It's like McDermott says, "the best ability is availability". Especially if Babich and McD planned to change the scheme to utilize Bosa and Heucht as movable chess pieces.

We could have had Rousseau and Sweat for under 40 mil per - 2 players in their prime for 3 or 4 years feels like a better swing than this.

But I will gladly accept being wrong on this take.

Good for Ty glad to have him back, I would still take a RB in the 5th or 6th now

I don't think so. Unless we trade Cook during the draft, and we are not carrying 4 RBs on the roster.

Maybe a UDFA to get some looks in preseason.

then why give Josh an entirely new contract now when he had 4 years left and it could have been done next off-season

There needs to be a big move or moves coming.

You can always roll savings into next year. That's not an issue - if anything, it gives us more options if potential trades open up.

I’ve seen a bit of tape that gives me hope that he can separate.  He has size and hands to make catches, and his time today shows he can separate at moments.  I think he can be a solid #2 if developed.   Not a slot 2, but a true 2

For his supposed speed, he does not get wide open at all. I watched every catch he made this year - he's good, and got better as the year went on, but not what you want in a separator.

I just don't think we can keep fielding the same players and expect anything different. I say blow up the line and try new players. That means moving on from Rousseau, Miller, and Jones. Not because they are bad. Because they aren't good enough. I'm willing to take a step back there if it means we bring in some young disruptors to develop and possibly trade for or sign a legit pass rusher.

Rousseau is a good edge defender. He is great at containing and stopping the run. He makes a play here and there as a pass rusher. But he just isn't one of those elite edge rushers that we need. He would be good opposite an elite edge guy, similar to Jerry Hughes. If we get that, maybe I could be convinced to keep him.

Yeah, maybe this is naive, but I'd want 20 to be the max. I'm wanting more like 18 or 19 per year for him.

Look at percentage of cap when deals are signed. Don't get caught up in the actual numbers because everyone looks overpaid compared to those who signed earlier.

No you gave a table with pre and post June 1 from what I can tell.  You mention Dawkins restructure.  How?  How many years, what in bonus vs. salary?  Do the same for the players you mention could be easily signed.

I’m at Disney so will look later.

There are a lot of podcasts that discuss how you can open up about 70 million in cap space (Cover 1, Joe Marino, etc. ) - not that we will but it's available with restructures and extensions. I don't think we will do all of it but we could do pretty much anything we need to this free agency if the right players came available. That said, I want to keep Rousseau and Benford. Those are prime positions, these are ascending players about to enter their prime. You don't become a better team casting those players aside.

Yes hindsight plays a big part but when for example Coleman played out like his scouting report said, it would have made much more sense to try and move up for Thomas.

As others have said it feels like Beane and company are too focused on culture and scheme fit over BPA

I thought Joe Marino made a good point about Coleman ... that after 9 games, he was roughly on par with the top rookie receivers, 400 something yards, 3 touchdowns. After the injury, he wasn't the same player. I think the fans should give him -and Beane - a little grace considering that Allen wanted Coleman specifically, and he was doing really well.

If he doesn't move forward this coming year, then have at it. Same thing with Kincaid. He had a top 10 all time rookie year for tight ends. Let's give him a chance to move past his injuries.

I'd like sure-fire winners with my top picks also but that's not necessarily a given at the back end of the round.

  13. Marcus West only got promoted last year after former DL coach Washington left for the Bears so maybe this past year gets a pass. Besides special teams, this is the one area of the coaching staff that feels like a weakness. Even the better free agents we sign underperform while here. And then they look good when they leave (Poona Ford). Something about our scheme is amiss.

Maybe it's because we don't let our best lineman play upwards of 70 percent of snaps? Maybe it's a position we just draft poorly? If so, it makes sense to trade a high pick or 2 for a difference maker. Or start looking for better coaching. Imagine we get someone to help out D line the way Kromer helped the OL.
