Ganesh- I can't disagree with you more on this. Both moves in hindsight look logical and "easy" because they turned out overwhelmingly in San Diego's favor. The Vick Trade- they were widely criticized at the time for passing on this "once in a lifetime player". Not only did they pass on him but they were actually targeting LT!! If you remember LT had many detractors coming into the pros because he was a rb in an option offense and people questioned his ability to run between the tackles. That draft is littered with busts in the top 12 picks and San Diego came out of it with a HOF rb!! They also received a 2nd and 3rd round pick in the deal.(one being Reche Caldwell) as well as Tim Dwight who was quite a positive addition to their time at the time. The Manning Trade- There was an incredible amount of pressure exerted on San Diego when they made this trade. It felt like the pressure of the league itself was angling to have Manning in New York. Despite being skewered and hung out to dry Smith (for all of you Donahoe flunkeys) was a "Master Poker Player" in squeezing out the maximum amount of value he could before agreeing to this deal. Manning of course was the "golden boy wonder". San Diego was targeting Rivers all along anyways!! So they end up with Rivers-an all pro, Merriman-an all-pro, who they took 12th the next year and who is now of the top three defensive players in the game(do you think teams aren't kicking themselves for passing on him? To add insult Smith tabbed Keading- an all-pro with a third round pick from the trade.(a move he was also criticized for). What you saw in both cases was genius at work. Smith and Butler were unflappable in there vision and thanks to their collective skill(shout out to Buddy Nix also) at identifying talent they have laid a foundation for success that is the envy of the league.

I don't think we will be competing to sign Samuel. He will get the mega bucks by some free spending team. For the cover two- we can shop in a lower range. My guess is our biggest name signings will go- g,dt.cb Linebacker is a wild card for me- just don't know if they would move Crowell to the middle or not. So would they be looking for a mlb or olb? Also, do they feel like Ellison is capable of being a long term starter?

They do suck!!!! And the best thing about it is former wonder boy Gregg Williams' defense finished 31st in the league.(second last!!!!) Snyder deserves having this genius work for him. I hope he thinks he is getting his moneys worth! -

All the complaining about him each year- but each year he fends off competition thanks to his tireless work ethic and commitment to the Bills organization. Bobby April sang his praises after the season that he graded out as our number one special teams player. Levy resigns him to contract extension at a great price. What's not to like? Also, no I don't think a player with the attributes of Coy Wire keeps one from getting to the Super Bowl. Rather the opposite infact. Our great Bills teams had a ton of high character and great work ethic "role" players. -

Great post!! That's my eternal memory of him. A real football guy running the operation after years of Ralph's bean counters directing the franchise from Detroit. As you stated he built a championship caliber organization. -
Could you present a character analysis of this Shrute fellow?

link Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that the San Diego Chargers might part ways with G.M. A.J. Smith after the April 2007 draft. This reports meshes with our prediction that Smith will be let go for his role in the dysfunction that resulted in the termination of coach Marty Schottenheimer. It also bolsters the mounting speculation that USC coach Pete Carroll is being, or has been, privately courted by the Chargers. Carroll most certainly would want final say over the roster, and if Smith couldn't get along with a head coach who didn't have final say, he'd never be able to work for one who does. Still, if Carroll gets the job, the biggest challenge will be for him to hire a personnel guru who can do the job right. It's no coincidence that college coaches who have made the leap to the NFL in the post-salary cap era have struggled. It's one thing to recruit 25 blue-chippers every year and line 'em all up three deep on the depth chart. It's quite another to engage in the Peter-robbing, Paul-paying world of the NFL, where there are only so many quality players that can be signed without going over the total spending limit. Though Carroll surely has Pat Kirwan on speed dial, Kirwan's specialty is cap and contracts. Besides, he has been out of the league for a while now. Carroll needs someone with the skills to find the right players at the right price, and then Carroll will be required to take that talent and coach it up in a way that will allow the team to overcome a playing field far more level than the raw talent gap Carroll has enjoyed in at least seven or eight games per year at USC.

David Carr trade bait

The passing on Bush was bad enough- but with them giving up on Carr, that they passed on the hometown hero Young is just haunting. It's got to suck to be a Texan fan right now.
