  1. The hiring of Chan Gailey completely blows my mind. I was afraid we would settle for some no name coordinator and hope he would do well. Instead, we hire a coach who couldn't even hack it at the college level. Before you go off spouting win loss records, let me say that I watched almost every televised GT game while he was there and he is a TERRIBLE coach.

Then we hear Schottenheimer was interested and Ralph wasn't "comfortable" with him? Reality of the fact is that we will not be able to draw ANY free agent interest with Gailey, where we could have tried to start rebuilding with Schottenheimer, who at least has a good reputation in this league. Then Nix goes and makes a comment indicating that there were others people, whose names would "blow your mind" who called about the job. That is just adding insult to injury. So besides Schott, we are to assume there were other candidates and that Ralph turned them all down to hire this hack because he is comfortable with him?

    This front office is sick.

  2. I won't be one to judge how he will do here, since he hasn't actually done anything besides put on the Bills pin on his suit. I've been around the blog threads for the last day or so about this, and it has been 99% negative. For however many people they interviewed, they chose Gailey. Now it's time to get on board and trust he'll have a plan. If things turn sour, then yes, I'll be lashing out with the rest of you, but for now I will remain hopeful that he'll put the team in the right direction.

Innocent until proven guilty. Isn't that how America work, right?

Something I really liked, something his predecessor did not have, was his tone and attitude with regard to the conference. That made me believe he won't take any BS or make excuses. He knows the situation, probably better than most, or else he wouldn't have taken the job.

ABSOLUTELY NOT. You don't blindly "get on board" with an asinine move like this. Schottenheimer wanted the job! You have got to be friggin kidding me.

  3. i am glad that ralph is thinking for himself and not listening to fans....ralph has forgotten more about football than any of us will ever know, collectively...if he was uncomfortable with Schottenheimer, then that is good enough for me....its been 3 years since he was a coach anywhere...has to be a reason for that....

    Lemming

Ralph has apparently also forgot that the point of playing the game is to win. This is absolutely ridiculous

  4. Marv Levy's NFL head coaching experience prior to taking over the Bills (at 61 years of age) ...

    KC 1978 4 12 0 .250 5th in AFC West

    KC 1979 7 9 0 .438 5th in AFC West

    KC 1980 8 8 0 .500 3rd in AFC West

    KC 1981 9 7 0 .563 3rd in AFC West

    KC 1982 3 6 0 .333 4th in AFC West

I wonder what everyone was saying about Marv the day he was hired.

I wonder if all of these Bills fans had them dead in the water before he even coached one game.

He hasn't even assembled his staff, for God's sake.

Whatever his record Ralph was a leader of men. Gailey is not. I watched GT a ton while he was there and he is no leader.

  5. Bills fans have to realize that we are the leper colony of the NFL right now. The Bills could not even get interviews with most of the people they tried to target. Does it suck? Yep. Is it Ralph's fault? You betcha. Is pissin' and moanin' now gonna change anything? Not a chance.

So against that backdrop, the Chan Gailey hire is not that bad. Yes, he is probably 10th on the list, but his resume is not that bad. A lot is going to depend on who we can sign and draft anyway. Oh, and don't expect free agency to go much better than the coaching search. But that's the team we have. Be fan or not. It's your choice.

    PTR

Do you EVER taken a position against the front office? All I hear from you are excuses for Ralph. At least we knew who the lemmings should line up behind.

  6. Well then call me an idiot. I'm not thrilled, but he has had some good seasons as OC and HC. Now, Cam Cameron would have made be really angry. But this has me more confused than anything.

Get off the board Russ. Marketing can't cover up this screw up.

  7. Report: Gailey expected to be next Bills head coach

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on January 18, 2010 5:17 PM ET

We have a new leader in the clubhouse to be the next Bills head coach.

Jay Glazer of Fox reports that Chan Gailey is expected to meet with the Bills for a second time Monday. Barring a breakdown in talks, he's expected to be named the coach in the next 24-48 hours.

It's a stunning turn because Gailey's name has not been mentioned previously, and his meeting with the Bills last week was in secret.

Gailey, 58, would not be a particularly splashy pick for the Bills. But he would fit G.M. Buddy Nix's profile: He's an offensive coach with head coaching experience.

Gailey ran the Cowboys in the late 90's and has had offensive coordinator stints in Pittsburgh, Miami, and Kansas City. He was the head coach at Georgia Tech from 2002-2007 and is known for a run-first approach.

We can't help but wonder if Gailey's name came up when the Bills pursued Bill Cowher. When Cowher stepped down in Pittsburgh, he recommended Gailey to be his successor.

Ralph said they weren't looking for a "splashy" name. I am physically ill

  8. Is anyone surprised? Thats what anyone who bought into the marketing bs from the FO gets. Fake GM, 4th-tier HC. The only thing that could even make me feel a little ok about this is if Gailey brings ni some stud coordinators, but that likely won't happen. I'm just depressed now.

  9. I realize the search has been long. Well to do a good search sometimes it take long. The fact that no one else needs a coach factors in, we can be more patient.

    A couple of Facts:

1)NY state will not allow its states only football team to leave. Being from The NYC Metro area, its the Jersey Jets and the Jersey Giants. The NFL is not stupid. Senator Schumer, is powerful. The bottom line is that the Bills sellout ever game with poor teams.

    2) So what if we wait,.. lets get a good coach.

    3) As we all know there are 32 NFL teams, Its is a great job, Thousands of men would love to have this job, so if a couple of pre Madona's dont, well good we dont want them either. We want a guy that wants to be here and is hungry.

    4) Ralph did listen to the fans, he fired a HC in the middle of the season. Put in a GM, and is trying to get a good fit as new HC.

    5) We do have some talent, and we have a top 10 pick, with plenty of money under the cap. We are not the Lions or Tampa.

We will be fine, be Patient.

Keep drinking the kool aid. That attitude is why we have been terrible for the past TEN YEARS

  10. The only thing asinine here is your post, I'm allowed to post whatever conjecture I want.

Yes, I have owned a business! Furthermore, If there was a person I targeted first because I knew they could do the job better then anyone else and honestly offered them top dollar and they refused the job, I certainly would question my headhunter/ GM / Human resource manager as to why they turned down the job.

As a Bills fan I'm offended that the FO releases information that they will hire Mike Shanahan / Bill Cowher for 10 million a year and then get turned down. We haven't heard the reasons as to why those men turned down the job, I for one want to know. Until the FO releases Info as to why the "splashy" names turned down the job, I'll speculate all I want.

Exactly. This is what I've been complaining about. There hasn't been any changes in the FO. They reshuffled the same guys that were here last year. The moves they have made this year make no sense. Fire the OC right before the season starts? Total desperation move. When we fired DJ before the season ended I assumed we had a logical succession plan in place. Instead, the FO has floundered around, looking for anyone who is interested in the job. They should have been sending out behind-the-scenes feelers as soon as they made the decision to get rid of Jauron. The ownership and FO have made a complete mess of this whole situation and they are failing this city utterly.

  11. This is so stupid...teams who WANT to win hire coordinators EVERY year...just because you hire a coordinator says NOTHING about your intentions for the team...some of the top coaches in the league were coordinators before they got their current gigs, including teams still in the playoffs (Balt, Jets, Saints, etc), a recent SB winner Tomlin, and one even took the lowly Cardinals to the SB and has a chance to go back to back SB's this year...so enough with this whole BS about who we hire indicating our intentions. In fact, BOTH coaches from last years SB's were coordinators just a couple years ago...

Anyone who doesnt think Ralph is serious about winning is a fool, Im sorry, but its true. He has been spending money, taking chances, firing staff, etc, etc...he even hired a GM. You can disagree with some of his choices all you want, but to outright claim he has no interest in winning because he goes out and makes a hire of a top coordinator is just about the most ignorant thing you can say.

S**T gets real deep up here on this board I swear...

Stupid? We are getting turned down by coordinators for a mere interview. How exactly has Ralph proven he is spending money to win? The PR move overpaying for TO designed to keep interest in a team that doomed itself before the season started by cutting its starting LT and firing the OC on the eve of the season? What chances exactly has he taken? Nix was hired from within the organization and we have no idea if he will be a good hire or not, though I am not worried about him at this point. You need to stop burying your head in the sand and pretending everything is going to be okay, because it is not.

Your response is the typical ignorant ramblings of someone who is emotionally offended. Why do we need a proven head coach? Because we can't afford to spend another 3 years determining what we have in a new hire. You use Tomlin to prove your point? The Steelers were one of the best rosters in the league before he took over.

When the media outside of Buffalo starts writing about how Buffalo's search for a head coach is embarrassing, you know there is a problem. In the end, I fear we will wind up hiring the least objectionable candidate. Do I hope whichever coordinator is hired turns out to be a great coach and turn things around? Of course I do. I have watched every Bills game for the past 25 years and I love both this team and the city of Buffalo. However, history has shown that our front office has no idea what to do when hiring coaches: Williams, Mularkey, Jauron. This team needs to turn things around NOW, before Ralph dies and all hell breaks loose when someone tries to move the team out of Buffalo.

  12. They should target LT in the 1st if they can. I would argue they need to pick up at least 1 high round rookie and a FA at T. We then need to focus on LB in the draft, as that is a position where it is proven rookies can make an impact. We nee da QB in the offseason, the question is, can we afford to lose picks trading for one? The best, most mobile QB in the world needs at least 3 seconds to throw the ball. We need OL. This is not going to be a quick turnaround. You have to start the rebuilding process with the OL. I would argue we need to convert Maybin to an OLB and probably switch to the 3-4, but I'm sure many people here will disagree we have the personnel for it.
