  1. I have been watching a lot of old TV shows lately on the Internet and gunsmoke surprised me with it's plot and character development. I just expected a shoot em up cowboy show but it's pretty cool how they weave the story.

Any others I should be aware of?

I've never been into westerns, but if you like them, check out Bonanza or Have Gun,Will Travel (one of my brothers favorites). I used to love Rat Patrol and Combat when I was a kid.

  2. It always seems to me that magazines post these lists every so often to draw attention to themselves. In one paper it is Detroit, in another St. Louis, another and another and another. Maybe next year Buffalo will be on the most depressing cities with a 42" waistline above the Mason-Dixon line? I am sure Buffalo is not in its prime but most dead? Who can really judge that?

Exactly right. These type of negative articles are really useless. Any place you live is only as good or bad as you make it for yourself.

  3. How sincere can you be if you're always friendly?

How can you be friendly and nice to someone you don't even know?

Being friendly to people is easy but it has it's limits. If someone I don't know is overly friendly to me I get suspicious. I guess what I try to be is cordial and respectful, but give people their space.

    Go eat a d-ck.

    :lol::lol::lol:

  4. Actually, considering that most people B word if you don't actively and demonstratively show empathy, it costs a hell of a lot. If I were as visibly sympathetic towards every damned bit of suffering I see or hear about on a daily basis as people expect I should be, I couldn't function as a normal person.

Plus...I'm a fatalist. Quite simply, **** happens. People suffer, and people die. It's not some out-of-the-ordinary event that requires ridiculously histrionic levels of recognition, it's natural.

Who said you have to actively and demonstatively show your empathy? It seems to me the OP was doing the exact opposite and we're all just responding to him.

  5. The point is, angry person, if you live in a hurricane-prone area (or earthquake-prone area or a fire-prone area) you HAVE to accept the risks of living in such an area and be willing to bear the burden of the consequences. Not me. YOU. Ergo, if someone comes to you and says "hey, you better leave, the city's going to get wiped out" and you don't leave, don't come crying to me when help doesn't arrive to you at your leisure.

No anger, just a lack of tolerence for silly analogies that muddle the point. What area isn't sometimes threatened by floods, wildfires, earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes or other natural disasters? I guess you must live there. Can I be your neighbor???? The original discussion point of this thread (or so I thought)was not government spending,or insurance coverage or YOUR responsibility. It was only about the feelings we have toward the victims.Hell,I haven't done as much as I could have,or probably should have,to help out.I gave a little extra at church and donated some clothes and money here and there, that's about it. But I do have empathy in my heart for those poor people and I have prayed for them. That don't cost you anything and I don't think it's too much to ask from anyone.

  6.

So, if I know I have financial problems and I go out and buy a Corvette should YOU have to pay to bail me out of my bad decision? Because I'd really like a new sports car.

I argue that if you live in the hills around Malibu and your home burns down for the THIRD time, the government shouldn't bail you out. Same for the person whose home floods out multiple times or the person whose house on the Outer banks is blown over by a hurricane AGAIN.

Comparing the hurricane Katrina victims to somebody buying a corvette is stupid. One is a natural disaster and one is an irresponsible person buying unnecessary luxury items.Get back to me when you have an analogy that makes some sense. Living in Malibu wasn't even being discussed here. What the hell are you talking about????????

  7. And yet, to play devil's advocate, these people were forewarned to evacuate and offered assistance to do so, yet did not.

So just how much pity should one have for someone in that situation?

Most of these people had lived in the area for years, and had weathered many hurricanes safely. In hindsight, yeah they made the wrong decision, but that doesn't mean they where somehow to blame for a natural disaster. Some of you guys seem to be looking for a reason to blame these poor folks for their misfortune.

  8. The people you speak of were all victims of disasters that were completely out of their control. Anybody with a brain should feel sorrow for them. Things like this could happen to anybody, including yourself. At the very least, they all deserve our prayers. If you can't understand that,I don't know what else can be said.

  9. Say what you will about Stevens legendary pork gathering ability's [and it was true-often even the recipients where shocked-they would ask for a simple 3000 foot gravel airport and get 30 miles of paved roads] but at lest he did the job he was elected to do-represent the people of the state who elected him.

Like every other politician. They call it job creation or improving infrastructure when it's in your district. When it's someone elses senator doing it,it's called pork.

  10. Agree with all your points. Preseason polls are pretty much worthless imo. Polls shouldn't be released until after a few weeks of the season has passed. Then they would mean a little more. Hard to say what to expect fram ND this year. It's possible they struggle under a new coach and transition. It's also possible they get an immediate boost from the new regime, much like Weis's first year. Just have to wait and see. Can't wait till week 2 when my Wolverines go to your place,it's always a good game!

    GO BLUE!!!!!

  11. Sharks

"...Why are these creatures circling our state? Marine scientists say it's the growing seal population that they're after..."

Just wait till cougars (not those cougars!) make a comeback because of unchecked white-tail populations...

Mountain lions have made a strong comeback in California since a ban on hunting them was passed a decade or so ago. Every couple of years you hear about a jogger getting eaten.

  12. That era was different and led to a lot of the rule changes we've seen since. Most of the stuff people complain about when they watch those videos were legal at that time.

I can only imagine the uproar if Lambert tossed Cliff Harris on his head today like he did back in the '75 Super Bowl. Back then it was "protecting a teammate".

    Exactly right. :flirt:
