If we had Von Miller you wouldn't. Did I do this right?

Kind of, but you lost Miller a while back and have adjusted. We lost 3 starters on the oline the last 3 games.

And my comment was to magnify the impact those losses have for today. Von is great but I'm not sure he would put the Bills over the top. Our oline and him healthy would probably result in a pick em, IMHO.

Weather could also play factor.  While the winds will not be, at least according to the forecast, snow is in the forecast, and with the temps above freezing, it going to be slick out there with a wet ball.

As to passing that should give the Bengals an advantage.  What is easier to catch; a tight spiral grooved right into the bread basket or a M110 155mm Projectile with flames coming in at 200 mph?

non-bias aside what is your perception of how this game gonna to today? You know the bengals better than anyone here

If we had our oline, we win this game.  It would be race but our WR's would beat your crippled secondary, the passing would open up some rushing yards, and our D would cause more FG's than TDs.

With no oline, it will take a hero game from Burrow for Cincy to win.  Bills DBs do not have to cover for long, we most likely will not be able to run any of our deep posts or deep outs.  Our run game has been terrible for weeks.  The backups on the right side of our line are not good run blockers so it wont get much better.

Our defense is much like the Bills, a bit of bend dont break, keep the other team out of the end zone.  But without sustained drives and points Allen will wear this defense down.

I could see a 7-10 point Bills win.

I think we're going to see a serious DE rotation today to try and wear out those tackles.  With Carman making his first start of the season at LT, they are going to keep him always facing fresh legs.

Carmen is big with long arms, good run blocker. In pass sets he must win early, bull rush is not as effective as speed or spins as Carmen has really bad footwork.  There is a reason we immediately converted him to guard upon drafting last season.  Thinking about the kid on island vs Rousseau isnt a great feeling.

We won 13 games without most of our starting secondary. Unsung heroes on that defense have made plays to get us to this point.

All everyone can talk about is Josh Allen's turnovers, but they ignore the avalanche of big plays that he makes with only 3/5 of our offensive line being solid starters in Dawkins, Saffold and Morse. So you may be down 3, but we have been doing it with an offensive line that should have been fixed 2 years ago.

At least your oline has played together and in the same positions.  We are a mess.

This fascination with Allen's turnovers is hype, the guy still passed for over 350 yds, 3 TDs and rushed for another 20.  Bengals fans are more concerned about what the guy can do, not tipped passes or strip sacks, whatever.  We will NOT blitz much at all, unlike Miami who seemed to sell out on every play.

Me too!  I am starting to calm down a little though.  I was real bad when I woke up a few hours ago.  Usually I am fine.  I was even fine for the Chiefs divisional game last year.

I guess for me its the unkown.  I know what to expect when we play the Chiefs because we play them so much.  We rarely play the Bengals.

You guys kill me.... try being a Bengals fan, coming into Orchard Park vs Josh Allen is bad enough, but we have a 3rd string guard at left tackle, a 4th round rookie at left guard, a waiver claim backup at right guard, and a back up who played guard last season at right tackle.

We literally have no idea what happens today, last season with a crap oline our playbook was severely condensed - no 5 step pass schemes whatsoever.  The only long balls were go routes vs man press, no team allows that this year.  We may be back to the limited plays strategy again.

This is mathematically true but players will want a higher proportion of money down the road then when Josh signed.  This might negate the savings differential.

You guys are both correct in your assessments.  The new TV and YouTube contracts are over $100B thru the next 10 years. It will be interesting to see how much goes to the Cap and the increase per position group.  Obviously QB & WR have exploded, LB just signed a $100M....

We’ll just accept that this is what frazier is going to do, even though everything tells you we should the opposite. No one gets the ball out quicker with success than burrow and their line is banged up. Seems like a good time to bring some heat and jam the revivers. Instead we will rush 4 and play way off the LOS like we always do. Why? Because that’s what frazier does. He does it against teams with bad receivers so now we are playing the team with the best WRs in the league. He’s not changing.

We need playoff josh to show up, not drunk josh. Can’t turn the ball over and need to get 6 not 3 every drive to match burrow. Do that and we have a shot.

In theory this makes sense and probably works vs our WRs except for Chase. He is excellent at the LOS.  Bills winning with a 4 man rush will be very difficult on the Bengals.  We will need Burrow to have a hero game to have a chance.

If Cincy does indeed go to the the short passing game, the d-line needs to be more concerned about clogging up passing lanes and getting their hands up to tip some passes rather than going all out rushing the passer. Chances are you're not getting there on those quick throws anyways. It would be nice to get a tipped pass int or 2 in this game.

Good point regarding hands up, out of Burrow's 12 interceptions at least 7 are tipped balls.  Way too many.

Just jumping into this thread...from what I gather you are a Bengals fan and just here to talk some game stuff leading up to the big show down.

If that is correct:  First, hats off to the Bengals fans, organization, players, and the city of Cincinnati for how everyone handled the unfortunate Hamlin situation.  Class act.  I don't care about what people want to now say on each others boards, when the situation was going down, it was how everyone handled it that matters the most.  Everything being said now is just part of the fact these 2 teams are about to face off in a win or go home moment, both with Super Bowl or bust aspirations.

With that out of the way, on to football:

    1. There were some dirty plays, especially the one where your guy intentionally tried to roll onto Allens lower leg in the brief time that game was played.  So I expect a lot of mutual respect prior to the game, but all bets are off on both teams once the game starts and it will be heated battle.
    2. I know a lot of Cincy fans believe it was going to easily be a win for Cincy after you were leading and still moving the ball in the first partial game.  But Buffalo is 5-0 in games that started exactly like that this year, and we have seen Cincy start hot and slow down several times this year too.  So I think that was a poor assumption, we moved the ball easily on our own drive too and just had that stall down by the goal line.  I think we were in line for a great game where either team could have been the victor.
    3. If I had to pick a top to bottom best roster, it would go to the Bills, but the margin of difference isn't a big gap.
    4. Our greatest opponent Sunday will be ourselves.  When we don't shoot ourselves in the foot, we are the best team in football.  But that is easier said than done.  If we give Burrow more opportunities by turning the ball over, this will be a tough game for us to win.  If we take points off the board for us or extend drives for the Bengals with ill timed penalties, this will be a tough game for us.
    5. We need to get to Burrow...I don't care if we sack him or not, we just need to get at least pressure on him.  Your WR's are too good to give Burrow time, he will carve up our D if we do and game may come down to who has ball last kind of thing even if we play mistake free football.

My belief is that we will clean the turnovers up and will win a tough game.  But the margin of error for both teams is narrow.

Cincy fans believe they have the better QB, Bills fans believe they do.  This game won't settle that debate, but it will sure be fun to watch them square off for the first time.

    I appreciate the cordialness.

    As to your topics:
    1.  I respectfully disagree, as does the league obviously.  Trey did not take an extra roll and was coming hard, and your OT pushed him down.  Slow motion isn't the best in a case like this.  Thinking a 270 pound man can stop instantly moving forward and pushed doesn't make sense.  Several here also agree that it wasn't dirty.

    2. I'm a season ticket holder and on every decent message board and social media.  No Bengals fan with any sense believes that game was going to be an easy win.  That said, that 5-0 record did not include the Bengals...

    3.  Bills may very well have the best roster.  But we lost Chase for several games and won all but the 1st one (other reasons for that one).  Not sure the Bills could win many games without Diggs?  Has he missed any games this season?  We won a game without Boyd and Higgins and Mixon.  Mixon missed a few during Chases's absence and we won. So while the Bills may have the better roster top to bottom, Bengals have more depth at skill positions in my opinion.

    As to position groups:
    QB - even
OL - pre-massacre, even or close enough, after the injuries Bills no doubt.
TE - Knox gets the edge
    RB - its a wash
    WR - Bengals

Edge - Bengals may have the edge with Von out
DT - wash: Reader - Oliver
    CB - Bills
LB - its a wash, all 4 LBs are in PFF Top 16
    S - Bengals (Bills injuries)
K - I like our guy, although he has had some rough exchanges (new snapper & holder)

So these rosters are quite close, IMO

    4. We can say the very same thing, if we dont hurt ourselves and are able to keep Burrow clean, we can give the Bills all they want.

    5.  Getting to Burrow is a good point, I think we want to pressure Allen but keep him in the pocket so he cannot work his magic.

    Yes 😀

When the Bills pass rush works, it works because we're getting consistent pressure up the middle as well as from the ends.

The Bills D, if you haven't figure it out, is kind of weird.  It manages to be a top D as far as points and yards, year after year.  3 out of the last years now.

At the same time, we seldom send players to the Pro Bowl or have them recognized as All-Pro.

It's sort of a "whole is greater than the sum of its parts" creation.  It's kind of like a boa constrictor, it gets in your way but you look at it and think it's just a snake and it kind of has a small mouth - what can it do to you?  Then you get to the end of the game, and find that it's wrapped around your ribs 3 times and the jaws are coming down over your head.

A distressing number of the points our D has given up were the result of offensive turnovers that put the D in a horrid position.

I ask because Burrow does much better with pressure from the outside, as he likes to step up into the pocket and has good feel to avoid outside pressure.  Anything up the gut is usually a sack.  Joe rarely throws the ball away and hardly ever takes risks in losing the ball, he is 2 hands on the ball at all times, and is fine with being sacked.  He will take to the very last second to get the ball out with outside rushers coming.

  12. 1 hour ago, boyst said:

i don't think the bills will try to tee up pressure. there is too much room for error there. burrow is hot or cold and thats not just from game to game. the entire bengals offense can lull themselves into a regressive state. i do not believe this is anything special - just their mindset. it's sentiment echoed through the team.

because of this i could see them being up 7-14 points on buffalo through the first half to come out cold and comfortable in the 2nd.

where i am going with this Re: the OL.... i do not know the Bengals OL right now. NO ONE DOES. but what i do know is the Bills defense. I do know that Frazier has taken more liberty with his gameplan then other seasons. i know that he has dialed in new wrinkles and looked to expose flaws of QB's.

So, while i cannot look at the Bengals OL because it is a complete wildcard - so much that i am not putting it as a factor for the outcome of the game - i am looking at Burrow. burrow is going to be gameplanned like early Tua. A stoic big pocket QB who makes mistakes when properly attacked but can just as soon sting you.  the pressure to get on him is going to be minimalized which is a buffalo forte.

the Bills didn't attack the fins ol - they attacked the qb who was not Tua or Burrow. he was a rookie who had a respectable showing and impressed me. the bills should go into this game with the plan to control and regulate burrow and his 2.2 seconds per dropback. they should play the gameplan they did against another QB successfully (brady) who had the same abilities...collapse the pocket with hands up to disrupt Burow.

do this and jam his wr's. blitz and spy on any backfield setup because perine is going to be there blocking. mixon won't be a good blocker short of just chops.

the bills can win the battle on the trenches. offense gets you to the playoffs. time clock management and running gets you to the championship. defense wins you championships.

so while i walked around your question - i can directly answer it that the bills were hurting on defense with jordan phillips out and also appeared very lackluster. neither team was aggressive on the line. the bills line against miami was set to stop the run and let the rest of the defense take care of the pass. it is apples and oranges.

josh allen has the potential for 500 yards offense this weekend.

edit...i wrote this with several interruptions so it is likely fragmented

I can tell you we know the Bengals oline this week without a doubt.

LT Carmen, considered a 2nd round bust from last year's draft.  Couldnt win a spot on a terrible line last year and has practiced the last 2 seasons at guard.  Good run blocker, has good length but not good pass block mechanics.
LG Volson, 4th round rookie - has good reps and bad ones, improved throughout the season.
C Karras, 2nd best lineman next to Cappa, been solid but not overwhelming.
RG, Scharping, another former 2nd rounder we picked up off waivers from the Texans this season. Very big guy, not a good run blocker, ok pass blocker.
RT Adeniji, started at guard last season, was terrible. He is better at tackle but LT is his spot.  Big guy that has been better this season in back up roles, still not confident.

The only potential change would be Carmen being beaten out by another sub or practice squad tackle that started for us last year.

I liked your point "attacked the QB not the line", very interesting. I have no doubts the Bills defense last week will in no way resemble what we will see.

Mixon is beyond a terrible pass blocker, Perine is a good pass blocker.  You guys do not need a spy.

Jamming Tee or Boyd might work, Chase is a beast at the LOS, not sure I would jam him.

The Bills can definitely win at the line on defense but I think you are severely under rating our defense.

We are very solid with Hill and Reader in the middle and Hendrickson and Hubbard on the ends.  Solid vs the run and we get good pressure, but cant get the sack to save our lives. Very frustrating.  We have had excellent LB play as have the Bills.

Josh could go for 500 and 4 TDs vs anyone but we have one of the best passing defenses as to completion percentage, even with 2 questionable cornerbacks.  We do have good safeties that help a lot.

Suggesting that Skylar Thompson is a better option at QB than the gawdawful Tyler Huntley is in no way saying that Skylar Thompson is a good QB, much less a great one. But you are well aware of that and instead just chose to lie to your buddies so that you had another way to mock the people here. Those kinds of misrepresentations of this community are why this place has no respect for you or trust in your word, nor should it.

If you want to point at people and question their decency and integrity, perhaps you should start with a mirror.

Thompson has some mobility...he made some nice plays to move around and get out of pressure...a lot of times it led to off target throws, but it could have been a lot worse if he stayed in the pocket.

The Bills are probably the best team in the NFL at getting "almost sacks" but allowing the QB to make a play still.  Like, they are all around the QB, getting hands on them, diving and missing, getting shrugged off while trying to make the tackle, etc and then the QB either gets out of the pocket and runs or makes a play throwing the ball...goes back years now.  I've never seen anything quite like it  and watching other games pretty frequently, it seems to be a problem that happens far more often to the Bills than other teams.

I don't know why it happens so much, but it does. You'll be watching the play and be like "how did the QB escape from that"?? Bills turn more sure fire sacks into positive plays for the opposition than I've ever seen.

I know the feeling, we have good pressure rates and no sacks, it is painful at times.

True, but the Pats lucked out to be in that position, much like the Miami game last week, we gifted them way too much. They had one legitimate scoring drive.

I would rush 3 as often as possible.  Burrow takes coverage sacks and with our oline 3 is all you may need.
