Additionally, the author is a "reader in Science" which by my understanding is the UK version of an instructor, At any rate, 60 is more than my threshold for "a few" ... edit: Her CV is impressive although her Phd is in sociology. Still, she co authored this paper on differentiating natural from lab origins for infections. The case study on Anthrax is amazing and helped inform the decision tree presented here, which is from consensus among experts. This is a cool paper. Of course any lab working with deadly pathogens is a safety concern...but that doesn't prove the origin of covid. I don't think this was a gov't mandate or law against speaking out against cancelling elective surgeries. The threat was almost certainly being fired by the employing hospital system. It's very likely within that nurses contract to not disparage the system or the decisions of the system.

Let it play out. The Chinese are never going to admit if there was an actual lab leak. The only way to find out is to let the science play out but we may never know the answer. Moderate confidence may be the best we can do but I'm hopeful we can do better. This is a global endeavor involving the world's best. Given the diversity, openness and skepticism of the scientific community, I don't see a conspiracy to hide the truth happening. Hopefully it will lead to better results for the next pandemic. And there will be one ...
