Why is Von Miller unrealistic? We know that Brandon Beane was trying to trade for him before the Rams beat him to the deal. We know that Beane places a (borderline irrational) premium on pass rushers. We know that DL draft picks outside the top 20 can’t be expected to contribute much during their first 2 or so years. And we know that the pass rush was wildly inconsistent this season and was a major reason why the Bills aren’t still playing football games.

Von Miller’s projected annual salary is $10-11 million, according to Spotrac, which is about the salary cap equivalent of cutting Jon Feliciano and AJ Klein.

Didn't realize his projected salary was so low, although I am afraid that they'll keep bums like Feliciano and Klein because they like them for some reason. And I think there is a solid chance that he goes back to the Rams. But I would love to get him.

Here’s the thing. We’re probably at most getting one big ticket guy. Probably none tbh.

Guys with reasonable contracts I like are:

    Ryan Fitzpatrick (backup QB)

    Cordarelle Patterson RB

    Jerick McKinnon RB

    Zach Pascal WR

    Jamison Crowder WR

    Robert Tonyan TE

    Ben Jones Center

    Mark Glowinski OG

    Derek Barnett DE

    Larry Ogunjobi DT

I absolutely love Glowinski. Solid guard, and shouldn’t break the bank. This is a good list and all make sense for our price range. I’d love to sign a few of these guys

  3. Christian Kirk (LOVE HIM)

    Melvin Gordon-to pair with singletary

    Chase Edmonds

    Cordarrelle Patterson

    Jamison Crowder

    Michael Gallup

    DJ Chark

    Byron Pringle

    Chandler Jones(Unrealistic but a dream)

    Von Miller (Also unrealistic)

    Larry Ogunjobi

    Austin Corbett

    Mark Glowinski

    Andrew Norwell

    Melvin Ingram

    Steven Nelson

    Bryce Callahan

    Zach Ertz

    Mo Alie Cox

Will we get any of these guys, who knows. But I’d love to actually sign a FA other than Emmanuel Sanders this year. And please let Wallace walk.

Mike Shula. The guy I have wanted this entire time. Give me that 2014/15 Panthers offense with Josh Allen over Cam Newton and we are winning the Super Bowl

The guy who coordinated the 18-19 Giants and couldn’t win at Alabama? I’ll pass. Get someone young who likes to pass the ball

OK.  Who are the above average, proven-able-to-play-in-the-NFL centers who can also play on either side as G, who you will be able to sign for $3.5M or less?

OK.  Who are the backup LB who know McDermott's system and are versatile enough to play any LB position and also play ST well, who you can sign for less?  And what is your definition of "barely plays"?  Klein played 30% of the defensive snaps this season, and 43% of the ST snaps; but last season, when we had more injuries, he played 61% of the defensive snaps.

I'm not saying that we're going to keep Klein - we may not, just as we may not keep Feliciano or Ford.

I'm just saying that before the Armchair GM cuts all the players he doesn't like, he needs to understand what role they actually play and have a feel for what it would take to sign a suitable replacement.

Not saying that we should be able to get an above average player for 3.5 million. I’m saying that Feliciano is a replacement level player who could be replaced easily with a rookie or minimum salary player. Very poor use of our resources. He was benched for a reason. Just because McDermott thinks he’s a nice guy doesn’t change that fact.

As for Klein, it’s again a poor use of resources. A guy who plays such a small percentage of defensive snaps doesn’t need a 6 million dollar salary. He’s also not exactly an impact player. The only guy we have who is more of a liability in coverage is Edmunds.  We could draft a rookie or sign a guy for cheap to fill his role. As far as special teams goes, those players grow on trees, contrary to the belief of our personnel department who likes to pay them big money.

I'm not going into roster decisions here.  I was just talking the minimum of players that Beane needs to re-sign, or sign/draft replacements for.

I would expect Beane to be busy looking for upgrades at several positions on IOL - including potentially cutting Feliciano and Ford in favor of those upgrades - but they're both under contract, so I don't expect to see them go until/unless a clear upgrade is in place.  If Morse retires and Bates becomes our starting center or if he remains our starting LG, then Feliciano becomes our backup C and an IOL who can play both sides.  I don't see how having a quality backup C/IOL "dooms us to repeat this season".

Feliciano would cost $1.5M in dead money while freeing up $3.5M.  So Beane has to feel comfortable he can sign a guy who can really play center and really play both sides as G for $3.5M or less, or he's not improving the team, he's degrading it.

As far as "underachievers like Klein", what exactly do you think Klein's role is and what is your evidence he fails to achieve it?

There is nothing quality about Jon Feliciano. He is a below average player who is seen as being good by a small number of Bills fans who think he is tough. Saving 3.5 million on a guy who was benched is a no brainer. And for the price he is paid, Klein isn’t worth it. Why should we pay 6 million for a guy who barely plays?

I don't think Beane is gonna be tearing up the roster for no good reason.

But he's going to have to either re-sign, or draft/sign replacements for a lot of the roster.  This may help define the problem.  I bolded the FA:

    Offense

    WR Emmanuel Sanders Gabriel Davis

    LT Dion Dawkins Spencer Brown

LG Ryan Bates Jon Feliciano Ike Boettger

    C Mitch Morse Ryan Bates

    RG Daryl Williams Cody Ford

    RT Spencer Brown Tommy Doyle

    TE Dawson Knox Tommy Sweeney

    QB Josh Allen Mitchell Trubisky

RB Devin Singletary Zack Moss Matt Breida Taiwan Jones

    FB Reggie Gilliam

WR Cole Beasley Isaiah McKenzie (ST KR)

WR Stefon Diggs Jake Kumerow (?ST Gunner)

LDE Greg Rousseau A.J. Epenesa Efe Obada

    DT Ed Oliver Vernon Butler

DT Star Lotulelei Harrison Phillips Justin Zimmer

RDE Jerry Hughes Mario Addison Boogie Basham

MLB Tremaine Edmunds Tyrel Dodson Tyler Matakevich

WLB Matt Milano A.J. Klein Andre Smith

NCB Taron Johnson Siran Neal (ST Gunner)

    CB Tre'Davious White  Dane Jackson

    CB Levi Wallace Dane Jackson

    S Jordan Poyer  Damar Hamlin

    S Micah Hyde  Jaquan Johnson

Going from the bottom to the top:

CB: Need to re-sign or replace Wallace, and for the start of the year need to replace Tre White who is likely to be PUP/IR through training camp

We were also very thin, as shown by a depth chart where the backup to both CB positions was playing

Need: 2 players  (at least 1 starter)

LB: Like it or don't, I think we're set.

DT: Pretty sure Beane wants both Phillips and Zimmer back, plus an additional player.  Phillips had taken over as starter for Lotulelei.

Need: 3 players (at least 1 starter)

DE: Need at least 1 player.  IMHO need an upgrade, badly.

Overall on defense:  Need to draft, re-sign, or sign 6 players, at least 3 starters

LG/backup: Need to re-sign or replace Bates and Boettger (1 starter)

C : if there's truth to the rumors Morse will retire, need a true starting-quality C (1 starter)

T: may need an upgrade to Doyle as ST, unclear

    QB: need a backup QB

WR: need a replacement to Isaiah if we let him walk - that fast guy who can do all the gadget plays, block as well as anyone in the league on a per-pound basis, and run routes

Overall on offense: Need to draft, re-sign, or sign 2 starters and 3 backups

    ST:

KR/PR and potentially replacements for 2 gunners (Neal and Jones)

Punter: 'cuz Beane didn't sound happy!

    HTH

So we just keep underachievers who are overpaid like Klein and Feliciano? In the name of “continuity”? Look how that continuity worked out this year. We have to cut some, otherwise we will just be doomed to repeat this season.

I’ll chalk that up to an emotional week.

Bringing back the same team doesn’t work. Tried that this year and it didn’t work out. Tampa tried it too and failed. You have to make some changes in the NFL and evolve. You can’t just bring back an almost entirely same roster and expect different results.

I don't expect the first three to be on the team next year. Probably doesn't matter anymore anyways, I doubt there will be any restrictions/daily testing.

Because the Chiefs (I'll keep saying this) moved heaven and earth to upgrade their oline after it collapsed last year.

I want that kind of focus on our weaknesses this off season.

Imo the 2021 off season was an overall failure bc we didn't improve enough we still lost 7 total games.

We did nothing. Adding Sanders, Rousseau, and Basham was it, and look at the results. We need changes!!! I hope we take your suggestion

  10. Changes must be made. The only things different from last season to this season were adding Sanders, Rousseau, and Basham. Look how that went for us. Changes must be made, starting with cuts. Feliciano, Beasley, Klein, and Matakevich, among others must go. We can’t just hope for improvement and call it good. We don’t have to rebuild the team, but if some changes and smart signings aren’t made we will be in for another disappointment.

You expect that Rousseau, Basham and Epenesa would get better...

That's why you drafted them, no?

Tre White and say, Kaiir Elam against KC in the Playoffs next year is light years better than what we threw at them Sunday.

Guess what... We have an elite QB, and the bill that comes due for that.  Can't have veteran guys all over the place... you have to hope your draft picks hit, and continue to improve.

Our DL tallied exactly zero sacks on Mahomes Sunday.  The lone sack came from him running out bounds 2 yards behind the LOS.  What would you like to do?... spend a massive portion of our cap on an aging pass rusher?  Or should we hope the young guys improve, and bolster our secondary opposite White, where there typically are Day 1 starters available end of the 1st Round.

On Offense, we bring back Allen's OL, draft some young guys to back up/push them, and then swap out Beasley and Sanders for two more explosive players... one in FA and one in the Draft.

That team seems much improved to me, in terms of what we can realistically do.

What makes you think they will be so much better? Epenesa and Basham were inactive for half the games and Rousseau was just ok. If we don’t get some other guys we are in trouble.

    How is that "nothing different".

-Keeps the OL starting 5 (and Doyle) together, while adding a RD3 & RD4 IOL as depth/challenge for starting spots.

-Cut Beasley, let Sanders & McKenzie walk.  Sign an upgrade at WR in FA and Draft a WR in RD2.

-TE/RB, yes, similar, with an added late draft pick for depth/competition

-DL, It's time for the young guys to step up.  We laid the groundwork for this coming year in last year's draft.

    -LB, the same

    -S, the same

-CB, White comes back, Johnson in the slot, Jackson/Lewis as depth, with a RD1 Pick (Kaiir Elam/Trent McDuffie)

This gives us an improved OL, improved WR room and elite level Secondary, while sacrificing some roster depth and rotational talent.

You replace the D-line with inferior players (as much as I dislike Hughes and Addison). Epenesa? He hasn't done jack ***** in two years. A 6th rounder? Basham? How do you expect to get pressure with those guys? You replace Beasley and Sanders, which is a change, possibly for the better. Other than that there are no changes. How do you expect to be better that way?

My ideal offseason as of right now..

DE:  Rousseau, Basham, Epenesa, RD5 Pick

    DT:  Oliver, Harry, Star, Zimmer

LB:  Edmunds, Milano, Dodson, RD6 Pick

    SLOT:  Johnson, Lewis

    CB:  White, Jackson, RD1 Pick

    S:  Poyer, Hyde, Hamlin, Johnson

    QB:  Allen, FA

    OT:  Dawkins, Brown, Doyle,

    G:  Bates, Williams, RD3 Pick

    C Morse, RD4 Pick

    RB: Singletary, Moss, RD7 Pick

    TE:  Knox, Gilliam, RD7 Pick

WR:  Diggs, Davis, FA, RD2 Pick, Stevenson, Hodgins

    K:  Bass

    LS:  Ferguson

    P:  FA

    Fill in the rest with low-level FA's and/or UDFA's

    So do nothing different?

  13. Replace Daboll with Dorsey, assuming that he leaves. Leslie won’t get fired or leave, but he should.

Cut Beasley, Klein, Feliciano, Williams, Matakevich, Haack. That gets us to 33 million in space. Restructuring Dawkins, Diggs, and White gets us to 52 million in space, if that is something we choose to do. Pray Star retires, because cutting him only saves 1.5 million. I’d keep Morse, he’s a solid center. Let Hughes, Addison, Butler walk. Re-sign Phillips, Wallace, and McKenzie. Bates will be back as an RFA. Let everyone else who is a free agent walk.

Sign/Draft 2 starting level defensive linemen, a starting WR (I love Christian Kirk), one offensive line starter, offensive line competition, a linebacker or two, a running back to compliment Singletary, and a second tight end. I would also look at guys who get cut like we usually do, like Sanders this year. Trade moss and cody ford for a football apiece. Profit.

  14. At the game, and just noticed the terrible body language of Star. The entire team just huddled up and was jumping around on the field, star wasn’t even close to the huddle. The d-line group also went to fire up the crowd, and no enthusiasm from star. The guy clearly doesn’t love football, and he isn’t even good at it. He needs to be off the team.
