If we are including coaches then it is Rex Ryan hands down.
The day the news broke that we were hiring Rex is genuinely the closest I have ever felt to just saying "screw it I'll find something else to be interested in."
The day we fired him is in my top 5 Bills fan moments.
No real players -- except maybe Rob Johnson -- who, at least according to Marty Biron, actively rooted against the Bills when Flutie was playing, but definitely lots of coaches and front office
1. Rex Ryan -- such a megalomaniac
2. Gregg Williams -- Mr. Blowhorn
3. Tom Donohoe -- thought something was wrong when Marvin Lewis chose the Bengals over the Bills.
4. Mike Mularkey -- trick plays when up 30 points is just karma waiting to happen
5. Doug Marrone -- although I liked him much better after he left.

Beane also mentioned that we practically got nothing out of our TE position.
Did he actually say this? Usually Beane is not that blunt -- especially with regard to a fairly high draft pick.

It is because the owners refuted that they are racist and blamed their coaches for the racism. Basically said "we'd hire black guys more if there were more in the pipeline to hire but that is on our coaches to hire more for their staff so let's reward teams who do that and develop them."
I wonder if that is where the McCown story comes in. "Leslie we want you as Head Coach but we really want you to hire Josh as OC to work with Deshaun."
Well, being forced to hire a particular coordinator certainly didn't work for Adam Gase. I would hope that Frazier isn't desperate enough that he is willing a guy with zero experience and someone that Frazier has never worked with as his OC.

People have been telling us all over this forum how the Bills were "not supposed to win" last night.
I have mentioned being favorites as well, but folks just love the underdog role, and many Bills fans wake up in the morning feeling the Bills get no respect.
They seem to thrive on it.
Definitely annoying aspect of human nature. There were plenty of times Tom Brady and Michael Jordan claimed that no-one believed they would win when in actuality they were heavy favorites.

I am pretty sure this kind of thing would have came out much sooner if it the press had been allowed in the locker room.

Passing of the torch in the AFC; Allen over Rivers, Jackson over Tannehill, and Mayfield over Roethlisberger. All four QBs were drafted in the last four years.

I think the Colts could have beat any team in the nfl the way they played us. A few penalties, no turnovers, rivers missed 3 throws the entire game, absolute domination of feild position. The ravens didn't play like that, they made mistakes and didn't play perfect. They are 100% a beatable team.
It was the regular season but the Ravens shut down the Colts 24 - 10 and had the 2nd ranked defense vs. 10th for the Colts. Their defense certainly looked pretty good today except for the first quarter. Certainly they are beatable but I would have rather have had just about any other team.

I figured that the toughest opponents for the Bills were (1) Chiefs (2) Ravens (3) Colts (4) Titans (5) Steelers (6) Browns. It looks like the Bills will have to play all top three to make it to the Super Bowl.

Good $ move by Marrone at the time. So smart of him to put that clause in his contract. He knew Ralph was on the way out and protected himself. And sure enough got caught smack in the middle of an owner transition where he was unlikely to be kept, as Pegs would likely get their own front office and coaching staff. Smart guy/smart agent . I thought it was brilliant career management at the time and still do. And he dropped into a really good HC situation in Jax and had a good year there until Bortles turned out to suck and Tom Coughlin the dictator a-hole drove all the good players get away. As Bills fan know oh so well, without a franchise QB in todays NFL, you are just spinning your whells. So say want you want, but the guy went 9-7 with the Bills, Pegs said no, then he had Jax in the AFC title game, so there's that.
I don't agree with that. The story at the time was that Pegula offered him an extension and based on how long the Pegulas kept Lindy Ruff Darcy Regier (and later, Doug Whaley), there was no reason to expect the Pegulas to clean house.
I assume one of the reasons he didn't get hired by the Jets as he seem to expect was his quitting on the Bills.

His initial press conference was..... interesting.
49ers would have been better off just saying "April Fools!" 3 months early and trying again
It was neck and neck with Gase`s introductory press conference. While Gase appeared to be high, Tomsula just rambled incoherently for an hour.

The problem with Alabama and other dominate programs through out history is 2 fold. First, how much growth is left? What makes those programs so good is their ability to maximize talent.
Second, they dont play NFL qb except for minor occassions if at all. Do they play from a sloppy/dirty pocket. Do they make tight window money throws. Those are the plays Tua rarely seen at Alabama. The plays you could grade in those areas werent great. Those were the areas that made Burrough a no question number 1.
There is a reason only 2 heisman winners also won a Superbowl at qb. That happened in the 70's. Rodgers, juco than Cal. Brady was 5th string at Michigan. Brees went to Purdue and hes from Texas. Manning went to Tennessee.
I don't know if Tom Brady doesn't belong on the list either. He started every game his last two seasons at Michigan (though he did the weird platoon with Drew Henson) and led the big comeback win against Ohio State his last year. I remember the UM fans complaining about the platooning when it seem pretty clear that the offense looked a lot better with Brady than Henson. Lloyd Carr was just in love with Henson's measurables.

Something Allen would need to overcome is turnover numbers. Allen has 15 (9 int + 6 fum lost) vs. 7 (5+2) for Mahomes and 6 (4 + 2) for Rodgers.

Whenever I see something like this my first instinct is to look for the flaws in methodology. Unless the result is something that fortifies my preconceived notions.
I think this is a brilliantly conceived model and should be considered the gold standard when it comes to analytic based head coaching decisions.
Sarcasm I assume? Definitely one has much more confidence in this kind of analysis in baseball or basketball but it is still fun to think about as long as you don't take it too seriously.

I think the baseline if that is right is utterly nonsensical. But I suppose you are right that as long as it is consistent it doesn't affect the ranking too much.
I am guessing on the baseline but it would explain why the average is negative.

So every team would be better without a head coach? I mean what is their statistical baseline? A Head Coach who makes every decision the same as their statistical model? That is a completely worthless baseline.
I couldn't figure out what their baseline is. If the baseline is a coach who makes every decision the same as what they feel is their optimal then all coaches would have an overall negative impact -- just that bad coaches would be more negative than good ones.
In any case, to a certain extend the baseline doesn't matter -- only how one coach compares to another matters. Perhaps that is why they only release the rankings.

Was exactly my thinking.
It is at least partially due to the coaches calls on critical plays. Based on their models of what the better decisions are, coaches tend to make the "wrong" decision more often than the "right" decision on critical plays. So the average coaches decisions on those plays lead to negative expected points.

I think Dennis Allen will get interviews this year.
But to be clear I have never argued it is about race with Leslie. It is about being a 61 year old, defensive, retread with an under .500 career HC record and a low key personality. Not sure how you sell him to a fanbase.
My point about race is that overall think it probably has been slightly harder for black retreads. Someone like Todd Bowles will be an interesting case study. If he keeps the Tampa defense balling another year or two does he get another look?
Yes, I absolutely agree -- other factors play a much larger role in him not getting another HC opportunity. His record with the Vikings was worse than I thought (.400) although it was impressive that he got into playoffs with Christian Ponder as his QB even if he had prime Adrian Peterson.
He also doesn't give the impression he is that interested in being a head coach. If he wanted it out there that he was looking he wouldn't have turned down a Rooney interview last year.

Frazier was his first choice I believe. I think he was his second hire after Juan Castillo who was his very first hire as OL / Run Game Coordinator. If I remember right for OC his first choice was Mike McCoy (who has been fired after less than a season by two teams since then) and his second choice was Brad Childress who decided to take a half promotion to Assistant Head Coach and stay in KC.
Mularkey and Shurmer especially. I can see why Marrone got a 2nd crack and to an extent Dickie J and Rex as well. But Mularkey and Shurmer made no sense to me.
The Gase and Mularkey hires were a complete shock to me. Gase for some reason has great relations with the owners and almost no-one else.

I think people underestimate how good a coach Leslie is. He's a very, very good DC and similarly good human being. I really enjoy his listening to his interviews. While I agree that he's not likely to get another shot as HC though for the reasons listed by GunnerBill, It would hurt to lose him more than people think. He's a strong contributor to our locker room character.
IIRC, didn't McDermitt get hired late enough that most of his staff hires was from the leftovers? I seem to recall reading articles that his first choices had all been hired elsewhere and he had to settle for assistants more than he wanted.
I don't know where Frazier was on the list but it was widely reported that Dennison was his third choice for OC with Mike McCoy being his top choice.

I think Frazier deserves another chance at HC more than many who have gotten it.
On 12/15/2020 at 1:55 PM, FUTURIST said:Really? Name one. Black head coaches can be just as bad as white head coaches. There is no discrimination when it comes to bad head coaches.
I am not saying that Frazier deserves another opportunity and I don't think he even wants to be HC but really? You can't name one?
Are we forgetting Adam Gase already? If we just consider NY/NJ related coaches, how about Dick Jauron, Mike Mularkey, Doug Marrone, Rex Ryan, and Pat Shumur?

Actually, do you think it would make any sense if you were the Ravens GM to get a backup by signing an undrafted free agent QB out of some school that runs a wide open college offense? Some quick guy who can throw those option passes, maybe too small for other NFL teams to be interested in him. At least that way you'd have someone who actually could run the offense and pose some kind of threat to the defense if you lose Jackson for a few games.
That's what Trace McSorley is. Obviously no Lamar Jackson, but he ran a 4.57 40 and had 800 yards rushing his senior year at Penn State. He is Johnny Manziel without the off field problems.

Definitely playing a more physical brand of defense. One pet peeve, have we ever stopped a meaningful 2 point conversion? Just seems like when we’re up by 16, it might as well be 14.
I believe they said 2 stops out of 13 on 2 pt conversions over the last two seasons on gr this morning. .

And Tomlin already has a Superbowl. I think the questions were different though. I think everyone knew Andy Reid could do the Xs and Os the question were things around game management. While there is a bit of that with Tomlin I think the bigger question is can he devise a specific gameplan for a specific opponent. I always think his teams fall more in the "we are gonna line up and do what we do and try and do it better than you do what you do" category.
Slightly unfair -- since Tomlin came from the defense side he not as involved in the Xs and Os that are more obvious to fans.
Of course his defense gave up 45 and 36 points in the last two playoff losses so that doesn't help.
