Why don't we give a player in a position that is notoriously slow to develop more than two years before we call him a bust?

And yeah, it did help him because he was a better TE in 2020 than he was in 2019.

How hard can it be?   Kelvin Benjamin and Tim Tebow are expected to pick it up immediately with zero experience!

Kidding -- he did play better towards the end of last year.

Haha read the article. You must be new here.

Trapasso is not clear what is meant by "redshirt" and I think his definition for qbs is different than for other positions, but why spent all that time talking about what the Bills did with Epenesa if that is not the model?

One thing for sure is that he definitely did not mean the pre-2018 NCAA definition of zero snaps.

  3. What I don't understand about Christian Wade is, why would he want to be back?   I understand his pay is similar to what he got as a star in professional rugby.  Why would he want to waste another year of his athletic prime sitting on the bench without even a chance of a call-up?

I wouldn't be surprise if he goes thru training camp and goes back to rugby if the Bills try to put him into the exempt practice squad position again.

  4. If you read the article, what Trapasso meant by a redshirt year for Rousseau is a year similar to what Epenesa had, i.e., very limited playing time at the beginning of the season and maybe only a couple of games where he plays 30 snaps at the end of the season.  I hope he plays a bigger role than that, but nothing to be outraged about.

Well, the guy was probably the greatest Canadian football player ever. So, I can see why they would think that way. Obviously, he wasn't AS good in the NFL but he wasn't bad enough to deserve the hatred he gets from a lot of fans here. He was the best QB we had post Kelly up until Allen got here and honestly until Allen got here, Flutie made the games the most exciting. I finally feel that excitement again with Allen because he is an exciting player. Much better Obviously, but I'm hlad to know that excitement will be here a lot longer this time

I agree with you but some of the Flutie fan reactions were pretty over the top.in any case, one thing for sure is that Flut8e would've  have been sacked 6 times in the Titans game.

Flutie was very vocal with the media. I've seen him be vocal with media members a few times but I wouldn't call it as him being arrogant or only liking himself. He just said what other people didn't want to say or didn't want to hear. He didn't dance around the question with his answers. I agreed with most of what he said. And lots of people say that they don't like him because he "undermined Johnson". Again, I don't care about that. He proved it on the field. If he said what he said and never won or wasn't any better than Johnson, then I would understand. The guy won 21 of 30 starts with us and took us to the playoffs 2 of the 3 years he was here. Johnson doesn't do that. Flutie is a QB we could have won a Super Bowl with in 99. Granted, we had the #1 defense in the league which helped. But with Johnson, there's not even a chance we get to the playoffs. Flutie won 3 grey cups in Canada. No doubt we could have beaten the Rams with him in that SB

I always felt some of the hatred was a reaction to overzealous newbie Canadian fans who flet that Flutie could do no wrong.

He never said he was great. He was always touted as a "miracle man". Not saying he was. He did get treated unfairly a lot when it came to certain things. I remember that he talked about how his college coach basically did the same to him that Wade did. Boston College was playing in a big game and Flutie got them to that point. He was told he wasn't gonna play in the game. The coach benched the guy he played over Flutie during the game and then asked Flutie to go back in with like 5 minutes in the game down 2 scores. It wasn't really a fair situation. He was one of the greatest Canadian football players of all time. Possibly "the" greatest. He was a 6 time MVP and 3 time gray cup winner. He had a really good year in 98 and didn't play all that great in 99 but definitely didn't deserve to be benched in the playoffs. He was also pretty good in the 5 games he started in 2000.

I believe there was a quote from Flutie when he left that said essentially something like I might not be the best QB in the NFL but you can't tell me I'm not better than that guy.

I would like to ask Eric Moulds what what he thought of Johnson vs. Flutie.

So a few things to unpack:

    1. I speak as an Arsenal fan and we certainly do not, as things currently stand, have the resources to compete with City, United and Chelsea.

    2. Liverpool are actually in our group rather than that other one they have just been exceptional in the transfer market, made huge profits on guys like Sterling, Suarez and Coutinho and reinvested that money brilliantly - exactly what Arsenal were doing when we were winning leagues in the late 90s early 00s.

    On the Super League specifically:

    1. Extremely badly handled. My belief is that the 12 teams were not all agreed on what it was. I think some thought it was the ultimate power move on UEFA to get them back to the negotiating table on their proposal for a revised Champions League whereas others thought this was really it - the breakaway moment!

    Thanks.  That was very illuminating.

Whoa, hang on... we don't want him.

I apologize for taking this off topic -- but I would be interested in what your opinion regarding the super-league.

It was handled extremely badly and destroys tradition, but on the other hand, a team like the Bills would probably have been relegated a long time ago under the European system.  Even teams like Tottenham and Arsenal seem like they may not have the financial resources to compete with the Manchester City's and Liverpools of the world.

Yeah, he doesn't seem to have much regard for the culture or leadership of the team. Will be interesting to see them going forward.

Cutting good players who are leaders on your team and who contribute positively to the culture can be risky.

But winning cures most things. If they win it probably won't matter.

I thought he was going to be a great coach his first year there but now, it seems he has too much of that smartest guy in the room attitude that a lot of the ex-Patriots assistants have.   He did a lot of things that are pretty hard to understand last year, things that must have led to issues in the locker room.

On the one hand, I agree with you that a GM's incompetence does not necessarily imply a family relationship with Satan. On the other hand, Donahoe's incompetence is about far more than just one draft pick:

    1) In 2001, TD could have drafted Drew Brees. Instead of which, he traded down for Nate Clements, CB. Clements went first contract + one year and out.

    2) Prior to the 2002 season, TD traded away his first round pick in 2003 for Drew Bledsoe. Bledsoe spent 3 years as the Bills' starting QB before getting released.

    3) In the 2002 draft Donahoe used the 4th overall pick to take Mike Williams, RT. Williams was among the biggest busts in franchise history. Donahoe gained pretty much nothing from the 2002 draft.

    4) In 2003, Donahoe used a first round pick to take Willis McGahee, RB. McGahee failed to provide a significant upgrade over Travis Henry, whom Donahoe had drafted in the 2nd round of 2001.

Don't forget getting rid of Ted Washington because Gregg Williams didn't like fat guys and essentially wrecking a top of the league defense.

So with Brown (scored 10 and is no. 1) and now Doyle we have two of the top 12 RAS scores going all the way back to 1987... interesting.

I have to believe some of these exceptional numbers are due to the lack of a combine this year.   I would be curious if someone analyzed these numbers for this year vs. previous years.  For example, average 40 times for all drafted wide receivers, this year vs. previous.

I am not sure how much this info is actually coming out of the 49ers is my thing more than them making it a smokescreen. I think it is one of those things where the draft media is a bit guilty of groupthink and has convinced itself it is Mac Jones. Now maybe they do have really good sources and maybe it is Mac, I guess I just think that is a really big price to give up for him.

Probably you are correct.   Either they really are going to take Mac Jones or its just the media repeating itself.  I don't see any purpose of the 49ers floating fake stories about it.

I still don't buy it is Mac at #3. Matt Miller insists it is though and he is pretty plugged in generally and especially on 49ers matters.

I don't understand what the point of a 49ers smoke screen would be.  Everyone is pretty certain Lawrence and Wilson will go 1-2.  There is almost no chance that the 49ers will trade out of the 3rd spot so what advantage do the 49ers have of trying to fool people?  The only advantage I can possibly see is to waste other teams time. Is that enough?

  15. I doubt very much that a the speed of football that Gronk caught was any higher than the speed of a football coming out of a a big arm QB.   Someone on Reddit (don't know how reliable) claims the terminal speed of a soccer ball is about 55 mph, I would guess that of a tumbling American football would be similar or even less.

Josh Allen threw 62 mph at the 2018 combine.

  16. I always rooted for Losman -- probably the QB I rooted for the most during the drought outside of Fitzpatrick.   He was definitely overdrafted, which was not his fault.  It is clear now he was never any good but he did show a bit of promise for the one year.

The Bills' oline was pretty much horrible in pass protection the whole time during the drought but his was probably one of the worse during the whole era.  It was such a pleasure and shock watching Allen seemingly have 10 seconds to scan the field during the last quarter of the regular season last year.  I thought this only happened with teams the Bills were playing.

To be fair, that time NE used their 2nd for Garoppolo, was when Belichick wanted to trade Brady but Kraft put his foot down so they traded Garoppolo instead.

So maybe it seems 2nd/3rd round is the line between "insurance backup" and "become an Pro Bowler or you're replaced".

Also Wentz's reaction is pretty common.  I don't remember if Brady was angry at the time of the pick but clearly he was later.  Also Roethlisberger was angry about the Rudolph pick and obviously Rodgers is mad about the Love pick.

I guess they felt they needed backup if Wentz failed and hope that Wentz would see it as a challenge rather than throw a hissy fit.
