  1. After watching 2 weeks of postseason football, my biggest takeaway is that these are the only two teams that I am certain won’t beat themselves.  Both have played a tremendous amount of postseason football over the past few years, and there’s nothing they haven’t seen before.

Philadelphia and LA took turns crapping their pants on Sunday while McDermott and Reid just sat back and let Baltimore and Houston shoot themselves in the foot time and again.  I have zero doubt that Buffalo would have won that game even if Andrews didn’t drop the gimme.  Baltimore looked unbeatable all year long…except for the part where they lost 6 games.  They’re great at playing beautiful football.  They’re so-so when it comes to winning.

We have so much analysis and see so many highlights that it’s become easy to focus on how good teams are in their highlights while forgetting about what happens on the rest of the plays.  It’s like playing golf against your grandpa and then being surprised when you add up your scores he always beat you even though you had the longest drive on every hole.  Meanwhile, he didn’t lose a ball or miss a putt inside of 4 feet all day while you had to buy a second sleeve at the turn and threw your putter twice.

The Bills had quite a bit of success blitzing Lamar (I think he was 5-12 for 80 when blitzed), so why are you so sure that won’t work against KC?

Lamar and Mahomes are two very different players with different strengths and weaknesses.  Mahomes is much closer to Brady between the ears.  He’s nearly impossible to confuse, and he processes things instantaneously.  Lamar…does not.

So you think Allen is bad against the blitz? Spags sends blitzes when they can’t get enough pressure from the front four. If they can generate adequate pressure I’m sure he’d rather have the extra guy go back in coverage. As would any good D coordinator.

What Spags is good at is mixing up where pressure comes from. It looks like a blitz but when you watch it again a DLinemen drops back in coverage while a db has rushed. If Sqags has to send extra guys for pressure KC will lose for sure.

No, I don’t think Allen is bad against them blitz.  In fact, he’s not bad against anything.  That’s not really the point, though.  Spags is going to blitz him because that’s what Spags does.  If KC gets pressure with their front 4, he’s still going to blitz.

You’re definitely right about his willingness to drop DEs (and even a DT every now and again, LOL) into coverage to replace a blitzing DB.  He’s an absolute madman in that regard.  If Josh can keep his composure against that crowd and those blitzes all the while knowing that the champs are coming for his soul, Buffalo is going to win.  As a Chiefs fan, it’s a very real concern.

It’s the same going the other way. And Bills O-Line is better than KC’s.

It’s not the same going the other way, though.  The Chiefs live and die with the blitz.  Spagnuolo is the GOAT at designing exotic blitzes from any position on the field.  Kansas City can and will blitz early and often.  If he can help it, McDermott won’t blitz at all because Mahomes thrives against them.

The way to slow Mahomes is to drop as many defenders into coverage as possible while still getting some pressure on him.  When he’s struggled, it’s almost always been when teams dropped 8 and his receivers still couldn’t get open.

I hear you- But Lamar was also insane against the blitz before the Bills game.

His stats when the Bills blitzed him according to Joe marino? 6 for 12 for 99 yards with an INT

His stats when he wasn't blitzed? Something like 12 for 13 for around 150 yards and 2 TDs.

Moral of my point is- The front 4 isn't good enough to get consistent pressure, and I think they will have to lean into sending 5 guys a fair amount of the time

If Buffalo can’t get pressure with the front 4, they will lose.

If he catches and is immediately touched, no. He had to catch and roll and stay in bounds. Wasn't impossible or anything but higher degree of difficulty than it needed to be.

Yea he should still make it but it 100% did.

The degree of difficulty was zero. Everyone here wants to find a reason to criticize Lamar because of the “rivalry” with Josh, but that was a TD in peewee football.  Andrews absolutely crapped down his leg all night long, and that was his coup de gras.  Had he caught the ball, he would have had to try not to fall into the end zone.  That was 100% on him.  If the ball was too far inside, it’s because Andrews drifted too far outside on the route.  Lamar threw him into the end zone.

Why does it feel like this is your nightly affirmation

It’s a credit to the Bills.  Literally every playoff game this weekend came down to the losing team gagging.  Allen and McDermott have figured out how to win by letting the other team hang themselves.  That’s incredibly important in the postseason.

  7. It’s easy to forget that winning is really important.  We get so caught up in stats and analysis that it’s easy to discount being able to win as a skill.  Baltimore lost 6 games this year.  There’s a reason for that even if it seemed like they should have won most of them.  Somehow, close losses seem to have been given more credit than ugly wins. Baltimore is incredibly good at losing games while making everyone watching feel like the better team lost.

Teams that are consistently unlucky are actually just not that good.  Conversely, teams that always seem to pull off lucky wins in rock fights are much better than they’re given credit for.

In the rams super bowl run his snap % was

    59%

    75%

    84%

    83%

Someone double check me but I'm almost positive

That was on par with his regular season snaps that year.  It was also 3 years and a blown knee ago.  He’s played 30+ snaps exactly once this season.

Might use Von more in an extra Linebacker role today to spy lamar and help against the run.  Same with Rousseau.  I’m going big upfront with Smoot, Jones, Phillips. and maybe even Oliver at End.  Rousseau and Von as extra Lineman/LB.  We cannot have Bernard, Milano, Taron, hamlin, Rapp consistently taking on Ricard and Henry.

That’s actually not a terrible idea.  Just not sure he has any coverage ability or enough lateral movement left in him.  I do think Buffalo is going to have to play a lot less nickel than they usually do.

You're going to see him north of 60% of the snaps in the next 3 games. Possibly close to 70%. I think it will pretty awesome

He’s played fewer than 50% of snaps in every game this season.  Who are you taking snaps from to give them to Von?

  11. The NFL wants it this way, or at worst they don’t care.  This way, there is one champion and 31 fan bases who think their team deserves to be the champs if it weren’t for them getting screwed.  It’s pretty pathetic.  You’ve got a team that managed 12 points, missed 3 kicks, allowed 8 sacks, and completely crumbled under the pressure and people are saying they deserved to win a game they lost by 2 scores.
