  1. Rookie QB’s rarely play on a team that has success leading to a playoff run. A couple reasons is that they are rookies and teams that start rookie QB’s are generally weak (which is why they start a rookie QB). Jones to me looks like an immobile QB with at best an average arm. If he is playing the majority of snaps I will make a guess of no more than 7 wins. This is based upon other first year QB starters records.

    Year One.

    That's the qualifier.

Still, looking at the names on that list, not many of them turned into DE #1's.

Understood. I think there is a lot that goes into those numbers, such as how many snaps the player gets and whose playing in front of him. I imagine most of those listed didn’t get the majority of snaps their first year thus contributing to limited number of sacks. Since our leading sacker last year only had 5 sacks if Rousseau gets 4-5 sacks he’ll look like a steal.

I just think that some NFL evaluators are telling you there isn't much of a difference ultimately between Rousseau and Epenesa in terms of talent.

They seem to be pointing out that they tend to win on hustle plays and pass rush against weaker players, neither one has proven variety of moves or snap reaction or speed.

Neither profiles as a #1 Pass Rusher in the NFL, as both seem to be 3-8 sack kind of guys.

Which again, Sal Capaccio demonstrated, that this is most likely what you're going to get when you take DEs beyond pick 25.

That’s an interesting discussion because for kicks and giggles I just looked up this past years sack leaders and the majority of the top 10 DE sack leaders were in fact drafted beyond pick # 25. I’m not sure what stats Capaccio is referring to when he makes his claim.

I think in his case its part of what his length brings to the table.   plus  big hands have a lot of strength in them.   HIs length and hand strength give him the ability to grab a jersey or ankle and bring a guy down that someone else wouldnt be able to do...so that's a definite strength to his arsenal that he brings.

Agreed. How many times have you seen a DE just miss getting a sack because the QB was able elude the rush. What I’ve noticed about his tape is that his length allows him to get sacks others wouldn’t get.

i just disagree with not making RB a priority and blaming blocking/scheme.  Motor looked sig worse last year talent/ability wise.  Moss looked promising.  I like the Breida signing a lot.  I can see him replacing Motor more than Yeldon.  I figured we would get another in udfa at least for depth.

All that RB talk aside, 1T is a glaring need and the strategy so far appears to be hoping harry and star can perform adequately.

The stats back up that the RBs weren’t the problem with the run game. Singletary and Moss were both in the top 10 in the league for yards after contact.

Well, this makes sense for New England. I do think he may be a solid starter, but in no way will this push the needle forward far enough for the Pats to overcome Josh and the Bills. He will never be the QB Josh is.

He’s not in the same universe as Josh. Not much of an athlete and needs all day protection. He’s not at Alabama anymore.

I like trading down, but there's no way Beane will trade down.   He'll either trade up or stay put.   Trade up if there's a guy they rate really high who fills a perceived need.   That's like there's a guy at 22 who they rated 12.   Something like that.

Or they'll take someone at 30?   Why?  Because there will almost certainly be someone they rated around 20 available then.  Why?   Well, because quarterbacks are so highly valued, some teams will take QBs who aren't really rated as first rounders but who are too valuable to them to pass on.   Plus, teams rate players differently.   Plus, there are some really talented guys, first round talent, that don't have the character, the emotional makeup that McBeane are looking for, and those guys aren't on Beane's board at all.   The result of all of that is that by 30, some guys McBeane really like will still be there.

Completely agree. Some act as if every teams board is the same. The boards are going to be different for a variety of reasons as stated. There will be someone available at 30 for Beane who may be 20 on his board but 35 on another team’s.

I really think he stays at 30.

This made me laugh.  I guess it's true that the picks helped in the Diggs trade, but it's not like the Diggs trade wouldn't have happened if the Bills hadn't made the Teller trade.

I don't think the Teller trade was a disaster or to use your word, a "fail," but it IS amusing the extent to which people will go to defend Beane.   I think Beane has been excellent, but nobody gets them all right.  If Beane had a chance to undo that one, I'm sure he would.

Mickey Mantle struck out once in a while, and so does Beane.

True that no one is perfect, but Beane is the best in the business, as voted on by his peers.
