Thanks! The Eden Express and Live Free or Die are now on my reading list. The review mentioned Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir (the guy who wrote The Martian, the novel on which the Matt Damon movie was based). I didn't read The Martian but I loved the movie, so when a friend mentioned PHM and I saw that it was the same author, I decided to read it. What a fantastic book! His novel Randomize was good too. I also enjoyed the Colony Mars series and The Belt series by Gerald Kilby, and I'm currently about halfway through fast-paced Earthburst Saga by Craig Falconer.

If you still haven't read The Martian, you really should. I agree they did a fine job with the film but the book really is.......out of this world (sorry, couldn't resist).

Also, when I suggested Richard K Morgan, I maybe should have suggested Altered Carbon instead. It might be more to your liking as it is more of a SF noir mystery than the other two I suggested, which lean more toward the military/scifi genre. Just a genuinely great writer no matter which you prefer.

This is where everybody makes me look like crap because I read cheesy commercial books that do absolutely nothing to make me a better, more informed person.

If you like it, it's good.

And that's all there is to it.

I’m curious if you’ve (intentionally) read a book more than once?

I can't even count the number of books I re-read occasionally.

My favorite piece of historical fiction is a trilogy over 2000 pages long and I've probably read it at least 4-5 times. And if you think I'm nuts, he wrote the entire 17,000 page manuscript by hand. It's in the Sci-Fi HOF along with the ink pots and cartridges he used. Talk about putting some love in your cooking. 🤯

In fiction, I like hard sci-fi - the kind that obeys the laws of physics and doesn't rely on magic like transporters, warp speeds, and universal translators......I also like mysteries, psychological thrillers, and books with zany humor.

    Fellow sci-fi geek here:

Here is a few things you might really like:

Children of Time - Adrian Tchaikovsky

Live Free or Die - John Ringo

Broken Angels / Woken Furies - Richard K Morgan

Cryptonomicon - Neal Stephenson ( part of the infamous Cap'n Crunch chapter  )

Also, if you're a big fan of Kurt, his son Mark Vonnegut wrote a fascinating book called The Eden Express about his experience with manic depression and schizophrenia.

Yup, it was a horrible design.  It still ended up being an end zone throw though.  Not sure if that was the intent of the design, but either way it was two end zone throws on 2nd and 3rd down.

I think the throw to the endzone was just him running out of time and space and tossing a prayer in hopes that somebody would make a play similar to Shakir's earlier TD while also making sure that a turnover was not in play.

If you think Josh demonstrated good pocket awareness here, then you're right (about it being a waste of time).  I guess Josh's trust for Dawkins means that he should elect to stand in the way of a dog-walking instead of the perfect pocket.

I guess I'll let the results of the play speak for itself.

Actually it's more of a waste of time to interact with self-important knuckleheads from other fanbases who think they know more than they do and think it's appropriate to come in and crap on threads with nonsense gibberish in a forum where their presence is marginally tolerable after a season-ending loss.

Read the room, know your role and stay in your lane.

He can't control his LT getting pushed, but he can make sure he's not standing directly in his path by availing himself of the perfect pocket.

You're wasting your time trying to use still photos of active action to try to convince me that Allen is at fault for Chris Jones making a strong play on a LT that Allen rightfully trusts.

He let his LT get pushed into his lap when there was a perfect pocket available.  I don't understand why people are questioning which open receiver he chose instead of asking why he didn't step into the pocket.

Because if he adjusts in the pocket the timing is off and the throw is late.

And I'm not exactly sure how Allen let his LT get pushed, but if you had been watching Dawkins for the past month you'd know he has been 100% worthy of Allen's trust. You're simply wrong about a player that you know less about than anybody here.

This discussion completely misses the point.  The decision was 100% correct.  It was Josh's execution that was poor.  Had he simply slid into the massive pocket to his right, that's a TD.

As talented as he is, Josh still has room for improvement when it comes to the subtleties of QB play.  There's no way  Brady or Manning stands still and lets himself get bumped by his LT when there's a perfect pocket to be had.

If he slides right, the throw is late.

Trusting his All-Pro tackle to hold his backside block, which he does 99% of the time, was perfectly acceptable.

When I saw the 2nd down play I knew it was stupid.  And then they did it AGAIN!

Actually they didn't. They ran a route combo looking to get somebody open for the first down, but all three guys ran their routes short of the sticks and the design did little to create stress or confusion in the secondary and the Chiefs had everybody covered easily.

Yes. You've mentioned that many times.

Yeah, I believe that is now the second time I have mentioned it in regards to a play that hasn't been discussed much.

The first time was right after the game.  "On third down they had three guys running crossers short of the sticks so Allen held it rolling out and ran out of real estate."

Sorry about that; hope you can forgive my relentless crusade of two posts in one week.

If it's 4th and 1 or 2 the bills 100% are going for it. I don't think you've grasped that.

Despite your assumption of my stupidity, I'm well aware of what the Bills would have done on 4th and short.

I'm also well aware of the exceedingly large volume of plays Allen has made outside the pocket in critical situations, particularly moving to his right,  and am glad he made an effort to extend the play and not just get rid of it and put the Bills in a 4th down situation. A situation that would have been anywhere between 4th/2 and 4th/9.

  11. Total book nerd here.

Just finished Rick Atkinson's The Guns at Last Light, the third in a three book series that starts in N Africa, continues through Italy and finishes in Western Europe.

An outstanding and even-handed work if anybody is interested in the subject.

Now starting a re-read of Neal Stephenson's Termination Shock. While not necessarily his very best work, it's still rock solid. For my money he is the best fiction writer on the planet so even his "not my best" is far superior to almost everyone else.

My son has a dog who would do that.  She ate 60 flour tortillas that were on the counter pushed up against my backsplash. I’m glad I didn’t have to put them back together, after a night in the back yard.

My buddy let his kids have a party at the house which ended up in massive hot dog fight around the bonfire that night(probably 50-100 hot dogs).

In the morning there were no hot dogs left in the yard but there were at least a half dozen large piles of regurgitated whole unchewed hot dogs scattered throughout the house, courtesy of a big fat yellow Lab.

I mean allegedly he is asking for the power of veto in Atlanta. So while he doesn't necessarily "need" to be GM, he is going to want the final say and I don't think he is taking a job without that.

He's one of the 2-3 greatest coaches I've ever seen, but if anybody gives him what he is asking for I think they are doing both him and themselves a disservice.

    4. DT (the need there is higher but the importance is lower... we have our difference maker there.... we need a starter at 1T and some role players)

At no point in the history of football has S ever been more important than DT.

If the Bills don't find a way to retain Daquan Jones, they have seriously ***** up, imo.

KC was giving up short stuff in the middle of the field.

While I do think the Bills were a bit too aggressive coming out of the 2:00 warning, this is simply not true. KC was defending the sticks at that point, which is part of the reason that Shakir was coming free on the post.

Whereas Mike Singletary couldn't play with 'em, couldn't win with 'em, couldn't coach with 'em. Couldn't do it.

Unfortunately for him the 49ers agreed. He couldn't do it. Poor Mike.

He was one of my childhood heroes. That was heartbreaking to watch. :(

Yea they were loaded. That is beyond dispute. He still did a very good job in San Francisco, but hat roster he inherited already had: Frank Gore and Joe Staley in their prime (both of whom will get HoF consideration at some point) plus Michael Crabtree, Vernon Davis, Mike Iupati and Delanie Walker. Then on defense he inherited Justin Smith, Patrick Willis, Ahmad Brooks and NaVorro Bowman. Those guys were all there the day he walked through the door. And while Alex Smith at that point was considered a bust, and Harbaugh deserves credit for reviving him, he was still a former 1st overall pick.

That was an overwhelming defense with an outstanding veteran offensive line on the other side of the ball.

Even I could have coached that group to .500 piss drunk in a lawn chair, and I'm dumber than a chicken.

  18. Has anybody happened to see what Mahomes average time to throw was in that game, or how that might have compared to how fast he was getting the ball out during the regular season?

I know the DE's (aside from Rousseau) were not good that day, but I get the sense that the Bills corners and LBs couldn't have covered a corpse with a circus tent and that was the primary issue.

Are you saying that Stanford was bigger faster stronger or Michigan? Do we just discount his 4 years in SF or his time in Oakland?

    I was referring to Michigan.

And I don't put a lot of stock in his time at Stanford. He was 29-21. In the Pac-10. Not exactly setting the world on fire.

I already mentioned that I think he rode superior talent and good coaches at SF until they fired him at the first opportunity.

So no, they weren't "loaded" when he got there.

They were absolutely loaded and being driven into the ground by Mike Singletary, Who was 8-8 the season before he got fired and who is sooooo bad that not only is he no longer welcome in the NFL, he was last seen coaching a HS team to a 1-21 record in his last two years.
