Totally agreed, there has to be reasons why it doesn't happen today.

But it just feels right for this team right now.  Mainly because playcalling could sure use a shot in the arm and this might be the thing.

I think a Josh Allen called offense would make McDermott's head explode before halftime.

Anyway... while listening to all these weekly prep podcasts for each game one thing that has been crystal clear to me this year is how often the Bills seem to be completely unprepared for their specific opponent.

Honestly, I have zero knowledge or experience with that media landscape. I'm too adhd to listen to a podcast I can't respond to.

But it's good to hear that other folks who are more knowledgeable and devoting the time are seeing the same stuff we are on gameday.

  3. It's not 1993 anymore and offenses are infinitely more complicated than they used to be. QB's have more on their plates than they've ever had in their lives.

I think asking them to be ready to have the right play ready 5 seconds after they've just processed the last play is just too much to ask in this era.

Giving them an extra option coming to the line is about the most you should ask of them at this point, imo.

Many of us on this board are old enough to know.

As tough as we were...these things just didn't happen when we were that age & younger or older for that matter.

It probably all started on social media and spiraled out of control because too many of these kids have lost the ability (or opportunity) to handle conflict and adversity.

To what extent do you think your last point is driven by McD not wanting to be threatened by stronger, more experienced coordinators?

I don't know if feeling threatened is his primary motivation.

I get the sense he's more an OCD micromanager that has to have things "just so" and makes his hiring decisions based partly on that.

Any thoughts on whether the increased confusion, getting plays in late, etc is a function of McD involving himself in *every* play on both offense and defense now? I don’t profess to know what the communication among the staff is like from play to play...

I'm in teh same boat and don't really know who is responsible for doing what, when. I'm just judging by how slow everything is on offense (which it shouldn't be because it's not remotely complicated) and how confused everything frequently is on defense. It has gotten somewhat better since McD started being more hands-on with the defense. I just think both coordinators are in way over their heads and have been promoted at least one level beyond where they belong. 🤷‍♂️

I know that is the popular perception but I think the coaching is the same level as ever.

    ......

I don't know how you coach up having to play 3-5 guys on defense regularly that probably belong on practice squads at this point of their career(Phillips, Tre, Poyer, TJ and Milano).

To me, it's less about how they're actually playing, than it is about preparation.

On offense, plays are constantly getting in late, even more so than it's been an issue in the past. e.g. Thr night they got the ball back down by 4 and ran their first play with nearly 3 minutes left and only managed to get one more snap off before the 2:00 warning. If they were across midfield, then that's by design, but they were around their own 20.

It's now Thanksgiving and Carolina is the only team they've outschemed since September.

Procedure penalties are a bigger problem than I ever remember them being.

On defense, we are seeing more examples of presnap confusion than we have in the last couple years combined.

Even STs are a mess outside of Davis' recent flurry, with more penalty problems and coverage/return issues.

This is the first time in the Allen era where I've regularly thought to myself that this is genuinely a poorly coached team.

So your answer to this is that he adjusted upfield, while the ball was already in the air, and let the safety have a clean catch to the ball instead of continuing his route where Allen expected him to be?

I have zero interest in interacting with anybody who intentionally makes foolish nonsensical statements about things they don't understand because they think they can play gotcha with people who at least have some understanding.

    Have a nice weekend.

Watch Palmer on the route, he's running across the field and looks like he's going to cut under the Safety. Allen throws the ball to exactly where Palmer is going to be and Palmer stops running his route.

It's impossible to know what Palmer's route is supposed to be (I guess maybe he was supposed to cut over the Safety in the end zone which makes no sense), but considering Allen threw it right where he was running I have to imagine it was there.

The safety had it read the whole way, Palmer recognized that and adjusted the route upfield because it was going to be broken up if he stays flat.

Unfortunately Allen had to get rid of the ball before he wanted to because Edwards screwed up at the snap and chased a zone dawg across the LOS for no reason. If he just drops into passpro like he's supposed to, he easily picks up the twist that created the pressure that forced Allen to throw the ball before the read/route was complete.

If Edwards just does his job instead of chasing ghosts, that's a TD to Palmer (that gets called back on the OPI).

No it wasnt a misfire. It was thrown where it should have been thrown. Palmer was streaking down the 10 yard line. Thats where the pass was going. Palmer adjusted his route upfield after the ball was already in the air. Had Palmer continued his route where he was initially going then he would have boxed out the safety. If he went upfield to the endzone then the safety is in prime position. Palmer screwed the pooch there. Slow the video down and watch it.

It's rare to see an entire paragraph where virtually everything in it is 100% wrong.

this all assumes he’s worth keeping.  After last nights uninspired mess, a strong argument can’t be made that he is.

That's an argument I'm not willing to engage in at this point.

For the most part I think he's a good administrator who eventually learns from "most" of his mistakes, but he's also still an OCD micro-manager with a set in stone philosophy that does not maximize the value of the unicorn that has been dropped in his lap.

That could be but he's been simply awful overall.

I'm sure you were in the stadium and it's harder to pick up on there, but if you went back and watched film of the Baltimore game you'd see him attacking ballcarriers like they'd said something about his mother.

He was slow to get up a couple times and I remember saying something like "Geebus Christian, take it easy before you hurt yourself young man".

He kept it up for another week or two and has seriously tailed off since then.

The only good that came of it was that one big win and the fact that Tre White and Hairston followed his lead and have been sticking their faces in the fan all year.

Although with Hairston now concussed, maybe it wasn't all that good of a thing.

Yeah I was thinking he might be an NFLDPOY candidate after that opener.    But then he gets mysteriously injured in the next practice on a play nobody associated with the team seems to be able to remember.

It's a giant conundrum with him.

The previous year he tip-toed through the bulk of the regular season in an effort to keep himself healthy for when games really counted (a strategy I was 100% on board with) then started playing like he meant it in mid-December and was effective down the stretch.

This year he came out playing like a wild man and predictably got hurt less than a month in and is now lost for the year (anybody who thinks he's suddenly going to show up for a playoff game and tear it up in his first game back from a surgically repaired bicep is kidding themselves, imo).

A guy that size needs to play the season like a marathon, not a sprint, if he wants to be available when shlt gets real.

how many HCs are/have been prohibited from choosing their coordinators. I don’t see how that would work.

    It would work like this:

Sean, if we retain you we'll be independently be making all of the hiring decisions regarding your staff.

If that is not something you can live with, then I respect your principles but don't let the door hit ya' where the good lord split ya'.
