DTV has a monopoly with the NFL because every time the contract has come up for renewal, they'd offer the NFL a boat load of money becasue they know if they don't and they lose ST, their subscriber base will go way down. Though was surprised to read an article the other day that estimates if DTV were to lose ST, they'd lose 10% of their subscribers. I would have expected that number to be much higher.
Regardless one thing I'm pretty certain of is that the NFL looked at alternatives and if they could have made more money from some other service, they'd have done it in a heartbeat.
On the Sunday Ticket thread there was a link to an article about why the NFL is the last sport to go to a streaming service and why they don't. They like having the games on local networks every week.
One other thing different with football than the other sports is MLB package, NBA buy the content from companies that produce and broadcast a teams games. MSG has the Yankee's, Knick's Rangers, NESN has Sox, Bruins, and Celtics. The one exception of games not offered by these packages are any games broadcast to the whole country which essentially are all of the NFL games.
Having said all that I do think the next contract may not go to DTV for exclusive rights as sounds like DTV i.e. ATT isn't willing to spend a boat load of money for it..
Considering that i work in the television industry, I think i have a pretty good understanding of how this all works. Not sure why you felt the need to be condescending in your response.
You are certainly correct that the NFL does not want to lose its network affiliation. But streaming the games won’t effect that. You see, the networks are responsible for producing the content on Sunday and Monday and Thursday. So, the NFL needs the networks just as much as the networks need the NFL.
What MLB, NBA, NHL, have that the NFL doesn’t have, is team owned networks, they subcontract out the broadcasting of the games to networks, sometimes their own. The Yankees are a perfect example of that model. What allows MLB to have such a great streaming service, is that everyone gets their cut. The teams, the league, the team owned networks, and the broadcast networks. Everyone takes a smaller piece of the pie, but it’s a bigger pie.
The biggest issue is platform stability and the cost effectiveness for assembled viewing spaces (bars, restaurants, casinos, etc...).
As I wrote in my original post. The model that the NFL is using is not relevant in today’s market. Yes they make money because they are the only game in town. The only way to see their product is to get it from them. It seems obvious to me, and many others, that allowing pay per game for a premium price, is a better way of getting more dollars from people who are willing to spend it, but don’t want a terrible service provider for internet and television.

Tell me when i can buy individual games on Prime or Hulu, and then I’ll be interested. This whole monopoly that DirecTV has with the NFL is just such a wasted effort. Proprietary deals are irrelevant in today’s economy. You make more money offering the same product individually for more money. It’s basic math.

That was a quote from less than 10 minutes ago. I don’t understand how this guy gets a job doing post game. He sounds like he’d rather be cleaning his garage than talking about a Bills game, let alone a come from behind win where the defense looked outstanding.

Interesting thing Chris Mortensen brought up.
He’s been told that AB had a lot of freelance with Big Ben...sort of like Fitz and Stevie Johnson. It doesn’t work that way with Brady and the Pats. You’re supposed to be exactly where you’re supposed to be.
Imagine what happens when Brown is where he is supposed to be, open, and the ball goes to Edelman.

Josh Gordon hasn't played a full season since 2013 and Brown has quit on two teams this calendar year. So I would probably take Reggie Wayne and Marvin Harrison or Issac Bruce and Tory Holt. Or for that matter Swan and Stallworth in Pittsburgh or Clayton and Duper in Miami.

Why should Big Ben get to take days off or meetings off, or half speed practice, and he has to continue to work harder than everyone else with no wiggle room?
I guess I see a guy who has proven his dominance and wants a little slack. And the powers that be won’t give it to him. He doesn’t need the NFL anymore, and the NFL certainly doesn’t need him. Which is a shame because he’s an incredible player.
Watch him sit out this year and go to the XFL with Kaepernick and light it up.

He works his tail off in the offseason, gets himself into insane shape, and is clearly the best player on the Raiders, and then after STANDING BY HIM, they fine him. The money isn’t the issue, it’s the principle behind the money. Gruden said “can you just stop this ***** and play football”. Clearly it’s more than money he is after. Clearly he wants to be VALUED not paid. He doesn’t want to just be paid, he wants to be treated like a great player and be given leeway and appreciation for his hard work and effort. If by some miracle he played on Monday Night, he could easily haul in 10 for 200 and 2 scores, and that’s after all this drama. He’s a special player, and feels like he should be treated that way.
I dont think that’s so crazy really. It just seems that way because his dispute is read by millions of people and broadcast across the world.

I read PFT throughout the day. They’re on all the major shows and are regarded as “experts” with “insight”. Articles like the one I posted are an example of the norm in sports journalism, not the exception.

MDS’s take: I have a feeling Adam Gase and Sam Darnold are going to have a few surprises in their offense that will take opposing defenses off guard early this season, and the Bills may find themselves playing catch-up on Sunday. That’s not what they’re designed to do.

Florio’s take: One of these teams will contend for a playoff berth. That team is more likely to be the Jets.

I mean, where is the analysis? What basis for these crafty plays from deep inside the mind of Adam Gase? The Bills aren’t designed to play catch up? Why are the Jets more likely to contend?
Not even the local media here in NYC believe any of this, but the big city bias is strong.

It’s the system? I don’t understand why they get so little production out of the receivers in that scheme. Aside from Moss, who has really been a receiver on the outside that has been an every down threat for them? Certainly no one that has been drafted and brought up in the system.
I was also banging the drum for Harry. I feel like he is a huge talent and was the possession type receiver that the Bills offense needed.
Every year I’m confused by the Patriots, and every year they win another ring. SMH

I’m still shocked at what they pulled on the Texans.
Kenny Stills is not good. He’s a decent enough player, but he’s not a game breaker. And Tunsil hasn’t done a thing yet in the league. He’s big and strong and has good technique, but he’s not 2 1sts good and $50 million in guaranteed money good.
Soon enough, the NFL will look more like the NBA.

Like i said, platform stability is the biggest issue. They are aware of the market that exists, they don’t have a platform, that is stable enough to broadcast their product across the globe.
But youre right, I’m just a stupid nobody.
