Idk that I agree with the first point lol. Seems like josh tries to laser throws into super tight coverage pretty often if he expects his guy to come down with it.  A physical receiver that can come down with jump balls would be a huge asset for him

to me it feels like when josh loses faith in a receiver’s ability to catch the ball he starts maybe looking elsewhere even if they have a step

Sure. Josh makes bad decisions and throws into coverage sometimes, especially if it's to a trusted option like Diggs.

More often than not, his time to throw is a little on the high side and it's because he won't throw unless he sees someone open. He'll scramble for more time just to give guys more time to get open. Contrast this to other QBs who will actually throw guys open.

Processing when and who to throw to is still one of the areas Josh can really improve.

So for whatever it's worth, Beane and his scouts don't agree with his college profile.  Beane said he's great against press and has good moves

Now he may be wrong, but that's his evaluation.

FWIW, some guys with good eyes like Dan Orlovsky and Chris Simms are enthused

PS FWIW this is what Stefon Diggs draft profile said:

"Doesn't possess the strength or long speed to make a living as an outside receiver, but he can be an extremely effective weapon from the slot as a pro".   That would be news to the Vikes and the Bills.

Yeah clearly Beane thinks they can coach him up. There are definitely things to like. The thing majority of people agree on is he struggles to gain separation which we know is the one main trait Josh needs from his receivers (or he won't throw).

Coleman is a Bill and so I will cheer for him. I just think it may take some time to figure out how he can help.

All picks are need picks, it can’t be argued otherwise,

I think some picks are really more just best player on your board. This draft it seemed a lot like we passed on better players available to take guys at need positions. Like, we had some gaping holes at WR, S, back up DL and RB, and C. Lo and behold we wind up draftng basically in that order.

If you go back through Beane's other drafts, it's felt more like a mix between BPA and need. Edit: I'm not criticizing either. We had to do it, and for the most part I really like who we picked, Soloman included.

Agreed. This is why I wanted the Bills to get Javon Baker, so that if Coleman DOES wind up flaming out there and becoming more of a big slot, they have a backup plan.

    Oh well.

We're going to have to sign someone or make a trade. It's a rebuild year anyway though I'm happy we can at least field a decent team now with some of the other selections.

Our big outside wr splash is going to have to be next year's draft where we have some ammo. I'm also not giving up that we realize Keon needs slot snaps and move him there eventually. It could still work.

Brandon Beane is on record disagreeing with you.  He says the Bills will use Coleman as an X, starting, like, now.

We do have speed on the team.  Curtis Samuel ran a 4.3 40 yd dash and is a solid WR.

Andy Isabella ran a 4.31 40 yd dash, was drafted in the 2nd round, and has failed to make good as a WR on an NFL team to date.

For perspective, Tyreek Hill ran a 4.29 to 4.35 40-time at his pro-day

Everyone gets we're going to try Coleman at X. The problem people are having is his college profile (bad man or press, decent zone) often doesn't translate to X in the pros. Where you have seen it translate is by moving guys like that into the slot. e.g. St. Brown, JuJu, Rice, Boyd, etc.

Post June 1st once Tre’s money hits they will have some options via free agency at WR and DE. At WR OBJ and Tyler Boyd are out on the market. At DE Yannick and Ogbah are available as are old Bills favorites Jerry Hughes and Shaq Lawson.

I am not sure how they play it but if the Bills want more talent free agents are out there

You really have to hand it to Beane. I'm still a little choked about the Coleman pick but he's pulled a rabbit out of his hat with where the roster/cap was two months ago vs. now. Somehow we went from no options to being able to be a little selective.

  7. Overall, I like our draft. Beane had three jobs: 1. resist the temptation to trade up for a receiver; 2. meticulously fill out our roster so that we actually have enough depth to compete in our rebuild year; 3. find a receiver with one of the picks we do have. He succeeded imo.

I do think there's a reasonably high probability Keon busts with us and makes it on his next team, or we rearrange the wr group so we can make Coleman a big slot. It's just super hard to understand what we were thinking after the Samuel signing.

Anyway, I'm over it. We can find a stud receiver next year. We filled a tremendous amount of holes and can actually field a team now. I know a lot of fans seemed to think we'd just find guys off the street or something (after trading away all our best capital to move up in rd 1), but I was pretty nervous going back to end of last season. Beane has pulled a rabbit out of his hat with this roster.

End of the 5th round but your point stands it’s a solid pick. The Bills after their top 3 DE’s (Groot, AJE and Von) don’t have much there (Kingsley Jonathan and Toohill neither all that inspiring) so adding someone at the Edge for depth and development is solid. I do wonder if the Bills will look to bring back Shaq or another vet after June 1st?

I would think they'd add another end to camp. Hopefully this kid is plug and play in which case we have four assuming Von can do anything. I like it.

It's looking more and more like our post June 1st moves will need to include a vet wr though.

  9. I'll admit I started to get nervous after the Davis pick. Like, no way we're going into this season with McGovern+Edwards combo as our only viable option. As long as VPG can start our line makes sense again.

Also, we need maulers so we can run the ball a lot because we don't have any receivers.

Benford was a 6th rounder.   Milano a 5th.   You never know what else he can find.

Yeah maybe. The fact we traded out of 144 is a bit of a tell about what we think of the rest. The trade was good value but it's not like we can't use more talent this year.

My larger point was just that I'm not sure we got the best player with our picks due to heavy emphasis on need this year, and maybe this was the year we had to do that. Next year we'll be able to go BPA with more high value picks and the cupboard replenished a bit.

No, this is classic McD apologist propaganda.

It's McD's team, and his proficiency is defense. Frazier was a coordinator under McD's overall defensive philosophy. If he didn't like what Frazier was doing at any point during that time, he could have worked with him to make changes or fired him. It is the most nonsensical thing to say that if Frazier was such a big problem, that somehow McD is blameless when he held all the power to make any change he wanted and kept him for years. And yes, the D did do it again last year..."but injuries".

Again, given McD's history of postseason failures and chokejobs...we need to give Allen enough to put up almost a perfect game, because that's what we've seen is needed to beat the Chiefs with McD holding us back. Allen was GREAT in 2 of those games and we still lost. It's just not enough, that is again the reality of the burden of having McD here.

You seem to be forgetting the part that a big reason why we got to those games vs. Chiefs is because of the foundation McD built in the first place. It's not an accident that we've had a bunch of top 5 scoring defenses since he took over.

I'm not trying to make excuses for him either because Reid clearly has McD's number, but claiming that he's a "burden" we need to overcome or battle "apologist propaganda" seems like gross hyperbole.

Anyway, we clearly needed another DT to fill out the rotation. Hopefully, Carter is up to the challenge because he's going to play.

  12. I know next to nothing about him but going safety then DT is hardly a surprise. We needed help there.

I'm sure we'll take another WR tomorrow. I'd have preferred we draft a C though this draft seems light on them.

Carter will play snaps because we need him to. McD rotates. We need another end as well.

  13. Unless there's another huge run on WRs, I don't understand why we picked Coleman here. At least trade back.

Also, we have six years worth of data telling us that Josh needs receivers who can gain separation. He waits for guys to get open instead of throwing them open.

Maybe Coleman is a better blocker than I'm giving him credit for, but this just doesn't seem like an ideal fit.
