Hang on to that Homer. We are a better team now than we was with all the star talent.  I heard it on TBD

No one is saying we're a better team. Clearly, we took a step back. Beane acknowledged it was a transition year. We had to restructure everyone and cut and trade a bunch of our best guys. We had holes to fill all over the roster. You're mad because we couldn't do enough at WR. Everyone is mad about that, but there were like 50 things that needed to happen over the last few months to even field a somewhat competitive team and Bills managed to accomplish like 47 of them. It's not bad.

At this point you could line up as WR. This team is a joke

It's really not that bad. Kincaid is great receiver. He's going to get a much bigger role. Samuel is solid. Cook catches out of the backfield. Coleman looks like an upgrade over Gabe. It's just seeing Shakir out there in place of Diggs that's going to be jarring.

Bet we see more 12 personnel this year.

  3. This is probably the best player we drafted and yet he has the lowest page count. bump.

Edit: total speculation but one thing this pick might do is re-energize McD. Poyer and Hyde were getting old and slow. Bishop is fast, plays all over the field, and Qbs the defense.

With Milano and Von back, there's a chance our defense will be really, really good this year.

A large chunk of the fanbase is still in denial.

Believe me, I went into the offseason with the same attitude.  Cut a few aging vets.  Make a few smart free agent signings.  Kill the draft.  Get some bargains post June as the cherry on top, and prepare for another AFC East title.  Hopefully more this time.  Other teams (Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Kansas City, San Francisco, etc.) seem to keep the ball rolling year after year after year.  Why can't we?  I laughed off all the media folks saying the window was closed, and the Bills would be rebuilding.

But I was wrong.  Without clearly saying it, Brandon Beane has sent the clear message we are NOT expecting a deep run this year.  This offseason absolutely is a total rebuild.  Every single move he's made screams that he's building for 2025, and I'm shocked that some people can't see it.

The Jets are winning the AFC East.  It won't be close.  And we may even get passed by Miami this year.

Or some of these young guys might surprise and we might get more from guys like Milano and Von Miller than some are expecting. We still have Josh and no one else in the AFCE has Josh. But yes, it's a rebuilding year.

What exactly did he pull off?

Two months ago we were like 50M over the cap and it looked like we would lose everyone. Beane got basically every vet to restructure or they were cut/traded, and in the case of Von he actually gave up guaranteed money. We got to bring back guys like Epenesa and Jones who I was sure were goners. We got to sign a guy like Curtis Samuel. That's rabbit out of the hat type stuff.

But even still, we went into this draft with major holes at not only WR but C, S, DT, DE, RB, ST. Unproven guys all over the roster. I'm not sure about Coleman, but Bishop, Carter, Davis, VPG, and Solomon are all guys we can probably count on to play meaningful snaps for us at some point this year. Including Coleman, that's six guys. Name me another draft we've had where we're projecting six rookies to play. I'm not saying we found a bunch of studs, but some of them look like great pick ups for where they were drafted.

  6. I give Beane an A grade to date for the job he's done over the last two months. We weren't in a position to force anything. Instead, we made lemonade out of lemons. I really don't think you guys are giving him the credit he deserves for what he just pulled off.

All this angst is mostly just fans getting pissed because they want to see a team specifically built around Josh, and Beane didn't do that this time. We opted to address teamwide needs rather than just wideout needs, and thank goodness because we had a lot of roster holes. And BTW, drafting your center of the future because you had the foresight to trade back IS building around Josh.

Saying this team is in transition is just stating the obvious. I like that he isn't trying to fake sell us on anything, and that it looks like there's an actual plan in place for the rebuild.

Also, one of the great things about this year is they get to play without any expectations. No one expects us to win the SB. We might get some welcomed surprises.

This draft reminds me a lot of the first McDermott draft, where it seemed the bills placed high priority on character, locker room fit, leadership and college production

Slight change from when the bills were draft more on athleticism and potential the last couple years

We're back to rebuilding the foundation. We had some pretty good teams for a few years there where the foundation had already been built, and so we were able to shoot for upside with guys like Cook and Kincaid. Hopefully, we can get back to being so good we can afford to do that stuff again.

But when they moved Diggs, they created a massive hole at WR. You can't equate the need at WR with the need for a backup DT or RB. Yes those were both needs but only after adequately addressing WR.

Our only hope is a trade for a veteran.

We did address receiver with our first pick. Beane wasn't even hiding it this year going from top priority to the next to the next in order of roster needs. And yes, we need to sign/trade for a veteran as well.

Which is arguably the most important lens. This offense is not going to be good and I think the defense won't be great either

The offense won't be good? We have a top 3 QB, a top 10 Oline, a top 5 TE group, and top 5 backfield.

Our defense has a much better chance to be good with the players we added yesterday and today. Bishop and Carter, in particular, should help right away. We get Milano and Von back. Defense will be fine.

This was one of the deepest WR drafts ever. If we didn’t come out of it with a top shelf WR then that’s a failure

As I laid out in my previous post, we had many more needs than just WR. We came out of it with multiple starters, depth pieces, and prospects in a year where we were desperate for bodies. It's a win in every way but through the receiver lens.

  11. I quite like this draft outside of the Coleman pick. I'm assuming VPG will start in which case we picked up three starters in Coleman, Bishop, and VPG. Carter and Davis will be rotational players. Soloman looks like he could be a useful DPR.

Let's not forget where this roster was two months ago. Beane pulled a rabbit out of his hat to get to this point.

We didn't get a stud receiver, and in fact we still need another stopgap. Rome wasn't built in a day. Too many people got too caught up in this being the greatest wr draft since sliced bread. We'll fix it next year. In the meantime, now we can actually field a competitive team which I wasn't certain we'd be able to do 8 weeks ago.

Idk that I agree with the first point lol. Seems like josh tries to laser throws into super tight coverage pretty often if he expects his guy to come down with it.  A physical receiver that can come down with jump balls would be a huge asset for him

to me it feels like when josh loses faith in a receiver’s ability to catch the ball he starts maybe looking elsewhere even if they have a step

Sure. Josh makes bad decisions and throws into coverage sometimes, especially if it's to a trusted option like Diggs.

More often than not, his time to throw is a little on the high side and it's because he won't throw unless he sees someone open. He'll scramble for more time just to give guys more time to get open. Contrast this to other QBs who will actually throw guys open.

Processing when and who to throw to is still one of the areas Josh can really improve.

So for whatever it's worth, Beane and his scouts don't agree with his college profile.  Beane said he's great against press and has good moves

Now he may be wrong, but that's his evaluation.

FWIW, some guys with good eyes like Dan Orlovsky and Chris Simms are enthused

PS FWIW this is what Stefon Diggs draft profile said:

"Doesn't possess the strength or long speed to make a living as an outside receiver, but he can be an extremely effective weapon from the slot as a pro".   That would be news to the Vikes and the Bills.

Yeah clearly Beane thinks they can coach him up. There are definitely things to like. The thing majority of people agree on is he struggles to gain separation which we know is the one main trait Josh needs from his receivers (or he won't throw).

Coleman is a Bill and so I will cheer for him. I just think it may take some time to figure out how he can help.

All picks are need picks, it can’t be argued otherwise,

I think some picks are really more just best player on your board. This draft it seemed a lot like we passed on better players available to take guys at need positions. Like, we had some gaping holes at WR, S, back up DL and RB, and C. Lo and behold we wind up draftng basically in that order.

If you go back through Beane's other drafts, it's felt more like a mix between BPA and need. Edit: I'm not criticizing either. We had to do it, and for the most part I really like who we picked, Soloman included.

Agreed. This is why I wanted the Bills to get Javon Baker, so that if Coleman DOES wind up flaming out there and becoming more of a big slot, they have a backup plan.

    Oh well.

We're going to have to sign someone or make a trade. It's a rebuild year anyway though I'm happy we can at least field a decent team now with some of the other selections.

Our big outside wr splash is going to have to be next year's draft where we have some ammo. I'm also not giving up that we realize Keon needs slot snaps and move him there eventually. It could still work.

  16. 2 minutes ago, Beck Water said:

Brandon Beane is on record disagreeing with you.  He says the Bills will use Coleman as an X, starting, like, now.

We do have speed on the team.  Curtis Samuel ran a 4.3 40 yd dash and is a solid WR.

Andy Isabella ran a 4.31 40 yd dash, was drafted in the 2nd round, and has failed to make good as a WR on an NFL team to date.

For perspective, Tyreek Hill ran a 4.29 to 4.35 40-time at his pro-day

Everyone gets we're going to try Coleman at X. The problem people are having is his college profile (bad man or press, decent zone) often doesn't translate to X in the pros. Where you have seen it translate is by moving guys like that into the slot. e.g. St. Brown, JuJu, Rice, Boyd, etc.

Post June 1st once Tre’s money hits they will have some options via free agency at WR and DE. At WR OBJ and Tyler Boyd are out on the market. At DE Yannick and Ogbah are available as are old Bills favorites Jerry Hughes and Shaq Lawson.

I am not sure how they play it but if the Bills want more talent free agents are out there

You really have to hand it to Beane. I'm still a little choked about the Coleman pick but he's pulled a rabbit out of his hat with where the roster/cap was two months ago vs. now. Somehow we went from no options to being able to be a little selective.

  18. Overall, I like our draft. Beane had three jobs: 1. resist the temptation to trade up for a receiver; 2. meticulously fill out our roster so that we actually have enough depth to compete in our rebuild year; 3. find a receiver with one of the picks we do have. He succeeded imo.

I do think there's a reasonably high probability Keon busts with us and makes it on his next team, or we rearrange the wr group so we can make Coleman a big slot. It's just super hard to understand what we were thinking after the Samuel signing.

Anyway, I'm over it. We can find a stud receiver next year. We filled a tremendous amount of holes and can actually field a team now. I know a lot of fans seemed to think we'd just find guys off the street or something (after trading away all our best capital to move up in rd 1), but I was pretty nervous going back to end of last season. Beane has pulled a rabbit out of his hat with this roster.

End of the 5th round but your point stands it’s a solid pick. The Bills after their top 3 DE’s (Groot, AJE and Von) don’t have much there (Kingsley Jonathan and Toohill neither all that inspiring) so adding someone at the Edge for depth and development is solid. I do wonder if the Bills will look to bring back Shaq or another vet after June 1st?

I would think they'd add another end to camp. Hopefully this kid is plug and play in which case we have four assuming Von can do anything. I like it.

It's looking more and more like our post June 1st moves will need to include a vet wr though.
