I remember listening to the Chip Kelly haters on this board talking about how far he had set that organization back by depleting their roster and making bad draft picks and two years later they won the Lombardi.
You don't have to slow build in the NFL......the days of going from reaching the wildcard round one year to reaching the division round next year to the championship game the next year etc.. are gone.
In fact it's smarter to be very aggressive because it's easier to accumulate talent fast than it is to gradually build and maintain a talented roster.
This is Beane's 1st off-season as GM, same with the entire pro player personnel and scouting office.
Let's get that straight first
And no, one off-season is not enough to do a complete tear down and rebuild.
Especially with the cap issues the Bills had entering this off season.

I wanted to take some time on commenting about Zay Jones' rookie year and off season.
On the negative side:
- I am legitimately concerned about how Zay Jones has handled this off-season. Needed 2 surgeries, not a good sign, and waited till the end of May for a
leg issue. I do wonder why he waited so long, but the multiple surgery requirements thing makes some sense I suppose. Hard to use crutches on a torn
labrum and recovery from that surgery
- The LA situation was terrible.
- His target to catch ratio was terrible in his rookie season, even his mom teased him on social media.
- Prior to LA, Buffalo was making Zay one of the young faces of the team in promotional material, he ruined that
On the optimist side:
I've also been watching pro football long enough to know many excellent WRs need a season or two to catch up to the pro game. Most WRs break out in season 2 or 3.
- The OBJ/ Deandre Hopkins of the world and the faster pace of everything makes people less patient, but the normalized statistical model for a WR is a breakout in yr 2 or 3.
- Jones did play through a torn labrum all year and did not complain or use it as an excuse, even when he was getting mocked in social media and among fans
- took a terrible and awkward hit to the knee in the Jets game and kept playing through the game and season. I thought he was done for the season after
that hit but kept playing through the season. He has moxy and will play through pain, gotta give a guy credit for that
- He had the 2nd most uncatchable targets last year. PFF (not perfect but a measuring stick) almost half (46%) of his 'targets' were uncatchable. He never
called out the QB or the offensive scheme.

I think fans who have watched the pro game for 10 or more years know WRs need a year or two to flourish.This isn't a Madden video game where you plug and play guys. Sometimes patience is needed. The fact 40% of his 'targets' were garbage, and he still managed to get a hand on many of them shows range. Add in that he did that with a torn labrum and then knee issue shows me something.
I hope Zay Jones uses his rookie season and this horrible off-season to get his head on streight. He needs to know he is in the public spotlight now as a professional athlete and handle his business professionally. I can't crucify a 20 something person for partying a little too hard. Many of us have been there and are not famous, or did so before the omipresence of social media (thank god). He has a supportive family of other professional athletes (dad, brother) to help.
I also think a switch of scheme and better QB play will help.
I no longer think Jones can be a #1, but I do think he can be a very productive #2 or slot WR. I hope he does, and that the organization and fans give him a chance to grow into the role.

First half of the season highlights (7-0 start), then a jump to a late punt in the AFL championship game. Ends with Daryle Lamonica selling season tickets.
I've seen a lot of film from the 60's and 70's but still had no idea what a vertical passing game the Bills had, who were known for defense and running the ball in the AFL.
In retrospect that offense was loaded:
QBs: Kemp and Lamonica (!)
FB: Gilchrist
WRs: Dubenion and Bass
TE: Warlick
Also note, the Bills have never been afraid to swap out QBs. Multiple times they swapped Daryle Lamonica in for Kemp.
Not sure if it was for injuries or to 'mix things up' Ralph Wilson/ Music City Miracle style.

Fair enough. I don't see him as a guy that elevates the guys around him, but if the talent is there on the line he can hold his own. Most centers fit that bill. To that point he was on a line that lost Whitworth, Zeitler and a RT in a two year span if I am not mistaken. The whole line dropped in performance, Bengal fans could be singling out one of the two remaining starters as a scapegoat.
If he does struggle it is comforting to know Groy is there.
No one on this OL is a star, but I think there is more depth and at least replacement level quality on the roster than TBD makes out.

I don't think it's 'Chiefs Hate' and RIP DT, but he was marginal against the run. I don't recall him dropping back against the pass much. His 1 INT in 11 seasons would help back this up. He did force 40 or so fumbles, but I think a lot of those were sack fumbles, not sure. Lastly DT did play 11 seasons, not sure how many seasons he had left. A fine pass rusher, one of the best pass rushing LBs this side of Lawrence Taylor, but LT was pretty nasty against the run too. DT's FF and FR count add to his legacy, and he deserves a place on this list.
Biscuit deserves to be noted among the best too. He was above average at everything, but never stood out at any one thing, which is why I don't think he is in the HOF. Biscuits numbers were never eye opening, but his big plays almost always came at critical times.
Ray Lewis is top 3-5 IMO.

Well, I'll have to wait and see. PFF had Bodine as the #25 starting C, not great. Groy was rated as a Guard but unranked due to lack of playing time.
I think Adam Redmond may be in the mix too for one if the G-C-G positions.
I do think Groy is one of the top 5 or 6 OL Buffalo has, and should probably be a starter.
Bodine and Groy are both on 2yr $5 million dollar contracts (Groy yr 2, Bodine yr 1) and neither was drafted by the Bills. May the best man win.

Fair, but I will counter by asking you this:
If he was that bad why would they start him for every single game from day one and not replace him before four years?
Maybe the Bengals don't put a premium on resigning O-linemen?
Sounds ridiculous but they let a pro-bowl OT Whitworth and a very good OG Zietler go, both are fine O-linemen.
In fact the Bengals haven't seemed big on resigning a lot of thier own offensive players:
AJ McArron, Mo Sanu, Marvin Jones, Jeremy Hill etc.

Folks, I don't see how Bodine is not the starting Center. Since being drafted he has started all 64 games in his four years.
You don't sign a successful four year starter from day one to be depth, just like a 4 year day one starter does not sign a contract at the peak of their career to be a backup.
He was fine, and the Bengal offense was fine, and rather well balanced (run/pass). The problem the last year or two is that the Bengals lost two tackles an a pro-bowl level guard. Bengals also lost Marvin Jones and Mo Sanu, two WRs who were pretty good at getting separation.
Bodine will be the starting C. Groy is backup C.
I would like to see Groy and Teller get some time at LG.

Yup, lets see what Foster, Dupree, Proehl have before signing other team's busts, over the hill guys or JAGs. If we have a JAG WR corps I'd rather them be young with upside and lower cap hits.

Forgot about Kerley to help stabilize the WRs. KB, Kerley, Foster, Dupree and Proehl with Jones on PUP until he shows an understanding of the new offense.
I'm ok with that.

Oh, I wasn't implying that. I think KirbyJackson and I are saying, we know what we have in JAGs like Holmes and Streater etc. Roll with KB and some young guys who were 5 star recruits but were in situations where productivity didn't match skill (Foster, Dupree, etc) and go with them. Most folks here consider this either a bridge year with AJ or a learning year with Allen. Loads of $$$ and all picks to pry a WR or two with top talent next year if none of these guys develop. If one or two produce, one less hole to fill. Teams roll with young WRs all the time.
Not sure with where to count Zay Jones considering the surgery news today.

I've been a fan of Dupree since he rose from unknown to one of the pre-draft darlings last year.
Kind of like Foster, good tools and measurables, but weak college production.
I thought it was a good under the radar move last year when they grabbed him after Green Bay cut him.
I'm all for a youth movement at WR. Let the young guys play and show what they can do.
Wouldn't be surprised to see a mix of Dupree, Foster and Proehl as 2 of the 5 or 6 WRs on the roster.

The Green Bay Packers and KC Chiefs play in two of the oldest stadiums and are pretty competitive.

It's funny you said that. A friend and I were thinking back to what point tv news started to decline. We both settled on the first Gulf War where it was covered like a video game.
