I believe Josh when he says this is a blessing in disguise and I kind of feel the same way. If you think of the first part of the season with more of a preseason mentality like Bill Belichick, then Josh is right. His first few starts were filled with ups and downs and he got a feel for the game. Now he gets an opportunity to take a step back and watch the game a bit and take mental reps and things of that nature. So I am kind of looking at this weekend's game as the first game of the season, and the first half of the season as extended pre-season.
Now we get what we kind of wanted all along. Allen got his feet wet with some valuable game experience, and now he gets to watch a veteran play, and hopefully come back in and make an impact when ready. This was a clean way to pull him back and out of the starting lineup without having to hurt his confidence and progress. It's not a demotion because he is hurt. And if the team feels like keeping him out longer, I think it is fine.
There are ten games left. So let's say Josh sits for the next 3-4 weeks and ideally returns for the Jets game, or after the bye, we are in a good spot because he can re-enter the starting lineup and hopefully be ready to roll. What is nice about that, is you have the Jets twice, the Dolphins twice, and NE and Detroit (who run similar systems). That makes gameplanning a bit easier and we can really see Allen make adjustments in a short period of time facing teh same teams and concepts more than once.

Interesting points. But Trapasso said Mason Rudolph was the best quarterback in the draft and should have been the first quarterback taken. The same Mason Rudolph who was drafted 76 overall and could not beat out Josh Dobbs. I think Trapasso should maybe stop sharing his thoughts on quarterback play.

Is he starting?
He is a two down linebacker, which many detractors said he was. He plays about 50% of the snaps.

Woods is really the only guy I miss. I loved the edge he played with, his tenacious blocking, and he showed some playmaking ability. We simply did not use him as a weapon and I remember him being hurt quite a bit. I'd like to have him back.

I love his progress. Only thing I worry about is the “rookie wall.” Kiko played every defensive snap at MLB as a rookie as well, and I recall he got really worn down the second half of the season...
I think Kiko got worn down because he was undersized playing inside in Mike Pettine's 3-4. He got banged around a good bit. Tremaine's size and girth help him and he's basically been free to the ball. Our front line, especially Star, has done a great job of eating up blockers allowing Edmunds and Milano to be free to the ball. I think Edmunds will be fine. I love what I've seen so far and his potential is through the roof.

I think Locker is a fair comparison, but I do think Allen is a more polished passer than Locker ever was.Locker really was an athlete playing quarterback, where I think Allen is more than that already. He wil get there. We are baically seeing what every person said we would see in the lead up to the draft. He is not ready to play and is learning on the fly. The options are sit him and let him watch or let him play and learn on the fly. At this point with his injury I think it is a good excuse to let him take a step back for 3-4 games and then get back into the starting lineup.
It has been said a million times, but not bringing in a vet and having that ridiculous 3 way competition was just poor planning by this regime. I totally agreed with the Tyrod trade. There was nothing he could teach Allen becuase he doesn't know how to play quarterback himself. The Anderson thing should have been done a long time ago. I don't care if he sucks...it insulates Allen and anything is better than Peterman.
Allen will be great eventually. Keep the faith. The signs are there, he's a hard worker, and he's really smart. He will get there, but this is going to require some patience.

Yeah, I suppose the starter part does make it rather unique.
I think it is really becuase they want to keep Siran Neal, who simply isn't ready to play real minutes, but would get claimed if let go. It is definitely unique.

Former Panther, first rounder who could use a change of scenery. Ran a 4.3 forty!

Is Marlowe really worse than Rafael Bush? But maybe I'm just noticing the big drop-off from Micah Hyde.
I agree. I've been super disappointed in Bush's play thus far. But maybe McDermott is seeing something we can't. I think we will see Marlowe again.

I feel like he will make it back to the practice squad eventually. I feel like he played well. Perhaps he didn't play as well as we think.

I think this all depends on what people are defining as a project. People can be #1 overall picks and still be considered a project.

Probably a good fit as a 3-4 guy. Best of luck to him.

Why do punters have to be holders? If you can punt, but holding is not your thing, aren't there receivers and back QBs that could this kind of thing?
I really just think it is because they have nothing else to do. Since the kicker, longsnapper, and punter don't have to particpate in all of the football drills in pracrtice they can go off, be their own entity, and master the timing of the snap hold kick process. Having a quarterback do it, when he has a million other things to worry about, is probably part of the thought process for coaches when they started doing this.

Ben R was the most obvious Hall of Famer I saw play in college, there was no problem with his abilities.
all the yahoos laughing at him while his outmatched college team lost at huge stadiums are still clueless about what makes a real NFL QB.
I 100 percent agree with you, but he was still considered a project coming from a spread offense at a small school. His numbers were out of this world good.

Why is Kaser a free agent? Isn't he a really good punter?
He definetly an above average punter for sure. Apparently they are blaming their kicking issues on him because he is a crappy holder.

I think two of the more successful recent project type quarterbacks are Big Ben and Joe Flacco. Both small school guys with big arms who people had a lot of concerns about in terms of how their skills, footwork etc might translate to the NFL. Ben fell a bit in the draft and Flacco was drafted higher than people thought he would be. Cam Newton was mentioned in this thread. Also I know most people dislike Kaepernick, but he was a pistol offense project that took his team to the Super Bowl and probably would have had a better career if he had Allen's level of commitment to the game.
Many have failed...the Bollers, Leafs, Lockers, Gabberts, Losmans of the world. But I really do feel like Allen's love of and commitment to the game will more than likely lead to him fixing the issues that are present in his game.

Apparently we worked out Brad Nortman and Drew Kaser...so maybe they are looking to upgrade or light a fire. Or maybe his shoulder is screwed up.

Has arizona changed there scheme since he was drafted? He always seemed like a guy who would fit a pretty specific role to me.( i only saw him in college a few times)
Yes. He was drafted to play in James Bettchers 3-4. Bettcher is now with Giants. They hired Steve Wilks from the Panthers who basically runs similar concepts to McDermotts 4-3. On paper he should be able to play the will in a 4-3, but that doesn't seem to play to his strengths.

In what scheme and where did he play in college?
He was a 230 lb defensive end in Temple's 4 man front. He has some nice pass rush ability but is undersized as a 3-4 OLB or DE so I think inside in a 3-4 is where his versatility will play. A poor man's Ryan Shazier.

I always thought Reddick was a better fit as a 3-4 inside linebacker. I could see a hybrid type team like the Steelers or Packers get this guy and have him be super productive.
-
I recall a lot of people hated it, said he was washed up and looked at stats like YPC. They compared him to Mike Tolbert, and it's a ridiculous and short sighted comment. Ivory was a smart signing and has been integral to keeping drives alive. Perfect complement to McCoy.

The one thing about Jones that is interesting to me is that he has been in a quarterback room with Big Ben his entire career. He may be able to help Allen with preparation tips and things of that nature. Allen needs to be able to turn to a guy on the sideline, who isn't a coach, to get his take about what is being seen etc. that's where an experienced backup, even if he isn't great, would be a massive upgrade over a second year Peterman...imo.

I wish him the best but he has very small hands, he is not big, and ran a 4.79 40. For comparison a guy like KB at 6-5, 245 ran a 4.61. Obviously I hope he does great, but numbers like that don't often project.
