The media loves talking about how much better Josh Allen is now compared to his 1st 2 years, like it came outta nowhere and in my opinion that’s simply lazy on their part.

I went back and read the message board archives during Allens rookie season (I have too much time on my hands) and the sense most of us had was after Josh sat out a bit with his injury the game started to slow down for him and he was consistently showing us that he had the it factor to be what he’s become.

His Online was terrible and his WRs helped him even less yet he was still out there running for 18 yards on a 3rd and 16. Or firing a ball on 3rd and 22 past the sticks hitting Kelvin Benjamin or Zay Jones in the hands who would consistently let him down.

The point was it was clear to us that he was special early regardless of the completion %.

These NFL analysts should set their game up.

I love the narrative that Allen sucked before Diggs came along while not acknowledging that Stefon far exceeded career heights once coming to Buffalo

     In fairness they did sign:

    QB Bridgewater

    2 RBs Edmonds and Mostert

    FB Ingold

    OT Armstead

    OG Williams

    WR Cedrick Wilson

    CB Keion Crossen

resigned their TE Gesiki and EDGE Ogbah

Armstead for sure is good, but injury prone. Ditto for Mostert. I do like the signing of Wilson, and resigning their own fa's.

They should be improved, especially with Hill, but I don't believe the Dolphins have moved the needle enough to challenge us for the division. There will be growing pains with a new coaching staff, and we all know the QB is iffy. The Bills have also owned Miami and the Dolphins basically have no draft now.

In addition, we have the exact same schedule as far as home vs away. The only major difference is they get Houston instead of Tennessee. The other 2 different opponents are basically a wash - @ LAC instead of @ KC, and @ SF instead of @ LAR.

He's not a bad QB, I hope the Bills don't look past the dolphins like so many fans do. They have a solid roster.

They are decent, and at this point I would put them above the Pats.

But the Dolphins have a first time head coach with new schemes and still plenty of weak spots. It's hard to see Miami putting it all together immediately under McDaniel, especially with the limitations at qb.

Did you see him trying to return punts last season? He has zero business being on an NFL football field.

Practice squad or just cut him.

Lol I don't even know how to describe his running style. He has good straight line speed but seems to lack football skills to put it mildly.

With the continued stockpiling of elite talent in the AFC, it will make running the gauntlet to the Super Bowl even more difficult.  Getting the #1 seed in years past was always looked at in the context of your team getting an extra week to heal up before the start of the playoff push.  Now with Allen, Mahomes, Herbert, Jackson, Watson, Wilson, and Burrow all in the AFC, there isn't a single easy out to be had.  That's a real Murderer's Row.  Derek Carr with Adams, Waller, and Renfrow won't be an easy out either.

Getting an automatic ticket to the Divisional Round means one less game against one of these QBs and that has to be the focus of the Bills this season.  We can't have another Pittsburgh or Jacksonville game this year.  The Bills will have the big advantage of playing in the weakest division in the AFC and they need to run the table or go no worse than 5-1 in division play.

Josh and company need to come out of the gate strong and start stacking wins.  Getting that #1 seed and first round bye in the playoffs is going to be critical for the next decade in this crazy deep AFC if the Bills are going to win a championship.

Spot on, and the arms race in the North and West should allow us to do just that. No excuses to not get the 1 this year:

    Mia/Ny/Ne   5-1

    Home vs Ten/Gb/Min/Pit/Cle.  3-2

    Away vs Bal/Cin/Chi/Det/KC/La.  3-3

This is the worst case scenario, matching our record from last year at 11-6. One more win and 12-5 should absolutely be enough to secure the top seed

DeSean Watson is good. DeSean Watson doesn't scare me.

    Agreed.

The bad news is with the AFC being so stacked even a potential Wild Card game will be against a stud qb.

The good news is because those qb's are nowhere to be found in our division we should have an excellent chance at securing the 1 seed and avoiding that scenario.

By my count I think there are really only 5 spots (RB #3, back-up QB, back-up MLB, CB#2, slot WR) to fill and a handful others to bring in for competition.

RB - Currently I believe they only have 2 RBs on the roster.  Given the dollars spent elsewhere so far, my guess is they choose to address this in the draft again.

Punter - they will draft one and have a camp competition

MLB - I'm going to assume they do not trade Edmunds.  That still leaves back-up MLB in play.  I would like to see Klein back on a reduced contract, but suspect this will be addressed with a mid-round draft pick.

OT - with Williams gone and Morse extended, I think they shift from C/G in the draft to OT that can play guard in a pinch.  Dawkins played well down the stretch but he wil lbe a prime candidate for a salary cap cut in the next year or two.

C/G - At some point Bates will be signed.  He is the utility knife.  We all assume Ford will be gone, but he is relatively cheap has played and now has a new position coach.  As above I would favor adding an OT instead of another interior lineman.

Safety - Hyde was restructured but both safeties are over 30. They are going to need to save some dollars and get younger here in the near future.  Adding a future starter in the draft would make sense here. Another safety can play special teams as well.

TE - with Howard and Doyle playing the role of blocking TE, I don't see them addressing this any further

WR - They had 7 on the roster last season after Stevenson was added off IR.  I think they only keep 6 and they already have 5 under contract (Diggs, Davis, McKenzie, Kumerow, Stevenson). Do they keep 6 and draft a WR?  If 7, then two rookies or do they try and sign someone?

Back-up QB - free agent or draft pick?

    What do you all think?

You really think Dawkins could be a cap casualty? He's an above average player still in his 20's at one of the most important positions in the game. And he's signed for 3 more years at a reasonable salary.

I agree with you that the lack of talent is a concern.. I had the same concerns  last year... and whilst I was cool with the Rousseau pick (you gotta have realistic goals .. its tough picking at 30)...I was hoping for more in FA 2021 other than bringing in Obada..

I just dont see him doing what will be required to bring in Hunter... big dollars AND high pick(s) doesnt seem his style

I also agree that if he is not planning to do that then Im hoping he has something else up his sleeve other than bringing back Hughes or Addison... If thats all we got then Rousseau better take a big step in 2022 because I have concerns about the other 2 guys

I concur with this but maybe getting consistent playing time will help guys like Epenesa develop. At least, that's what I'm holding on to if we fail to bring in a proven vet.

Sometimes young players need to be allowed to make mistakes and be given ample opportunity. I feel like this should have happened last year instead of rolling with Addison. If you don't have a top flight stud, play your young guys. AJ in particular should be further ahead of where he is now. What's the point of making someone your top pick if he is inactive almost his entire rookie season?

Yes he’s completely useless. I’ll bet the Panthers will just flat out cut him. And then nobody will pick him up because he has absolutely no value whatsoever. Maybe he can catch on with the flag football league or something

Don't take it from me, take it from Panthers fans. I don't root for them but I live in Charlotte, and by and large the fan base here has lost hope in his ability to stay healthy.

And with good reason. The dude is like Marquise Goodwin now - you breathe on him and he gets injured

I guarantee you, he's not broken down. And I will eat my words if proven otherwise. I don't care about the contract. People seem to forget that contracts can be restructured. If Beane thought it could work and could have gotten him for something like a 3rd and 7th then who cares. I actually Barkley is more done

He was never a workhorse player at Stanford and was not projected to be in the pros, but the Panthers gave him almost 1000 touches his first 3 years. Now he's played a total of 10 games the last 2 years.

I would stay far away from him, even if his contract wasn't so egregious.

Why is everyone so against McCaffery?

He's useless at this point. The man cannot stay on the field because Carolina broke him down.

I agree with those who thought we should have made an attempt at Barkley. While he is also injury prone, he doesn't have a huge contract and there's a lot of tread on the tires still. I would've considered offering a 4th, possibly a 3rd.

Carolina connection rings again, bounced around a lot like Daboll, got the most out of Cam and some change is good for the qb room esp for the guys behind Josh.

Not sure I like this much. Down here in Charlotte Mike Shula was public enemy #1 for his predictable game planning and play calling.

The Brady hire was fine, but this one seems a bit baffling. I was kind of hoping they would just give the keys to Dorsey and let him drive without the extra "support".

I'm not saying they can't find better whether it be the draft of F/A. I'm simply saying he isn't a terrible WR like you were making him out to be. No idea what Bills decide to do, but if they did happen to somehow sign him I wouldn't hate it

The Bills offense needs more explosiveness. Landry might be an effective security blanket, but Allen already possesses options like that in Diggs, Knox, etc.

We really need someone who can blow the top off of defenses instead of a marginal veteran with little gamebreaking ability. Williams or Chris Olave at 25 is our best option imo

He may be considered a POS to some still not over that hit, with a hard pass from you isn't anything I was responding to you about. If that's your opinion that fine. I only quoted you in regard to your statement that he doesn't get YAC and showed that he does in fact have YAC ability.

And yet in his career he has averaged over 12 yards per catch only once. In fact, Landry set the NFL record in 2017 for lowest yards per reception for a receiver with 100 catches (8.8).

If his YAC is still considered acceptable, he must be running an awful lot of 2 yard routes. He has minimal speed and I have literally never seen this guy make a big play downfield. Is this what we really need instead of investing in a youngster like Jameson Williams in the draft?

  15. 1 hour ago, Sheneneh Jenkins said:

Disagree, he has 274 in 2018

    436 in 2019

    341 in 2020

and 273 last season on a Browns team that had a bad year in passing game where Baker was complained about a bit.

    https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/L/LandJa00.htm#all_detailed_receiving_and_rushing

So he most certainly has YAC ability

Besides being a POS Landry is the antithesis of a playmaker. He's like Curtis Duncan on the run and shoot Oilers of the 90's. Hard pass from me - we can do much better in the draft

No snark intended, if that's how it came off. But honestly, our OL wasn't anything to write home about prior to these changes. It was beyond atrocious to start the year, and yeah, Bates added some stability but it was anywhere in the spectrum between a pile of 💩 -->🤮 -->🗑️-->😬-->😐--> "just 👌." "pass blockers vs. run blockers..." To quote Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg, "Blah blah blah!!" We weren't a good run blocking OR a pass blocking team!! The 'impressive' sack/qb hit numbers etc. are really just a testament to how much of a beast Allen can be. But I'm not gonna insult you because you're obviously a knowledgeable and I know I'm not saying anything you don't know. But let's not pretend like we are blowing up some great unit and it should've remained as is. I'm not as bullish about Spencer Brown as most are, but I remain excited about the possibilities of what he can do w/ Kromer now than I was before. It's also not as if Kromer doesn't know a sh**ton about pass blocking, either.

Bobby Johnson, imo, seemed like a MAJOR weak link and while, obviously, I was not in the building and haven't ANY details or evidence about the specific goings-on within, it's just mind-boggling what went on with Spain and Teller. He's had botched job after botched job since he joined in 2019. First Wyatt, then the perplexing situation leading to trading Spain for a bag of coupons after benching him for... erm... Brian Winters (yeah... I don't like to think about it either). Idk if Cody Ford might possibly be significantly better than how he's played, but Johnson has had a big hand in it and it wouldn't surprise me at all this year (or if/when he moves on from Buffalo since his reputation is in the dumpster right now) it turns out he was decent or even pretty good and he was just completely broken by how things were run during recent times here.

At the very least, I'm very surprised there's all this premature apprehension and concern that we're just gonna turn JA into a RB-belly feeder and it's going to be about "time of possession" and "slowing the game down," and [insert w/e other similar cliché here]. We're putting the cart miles ahead of the horse and starting a hilariously premature worry campaign that this team is gonna somehow put governor on the offense and Josh Allen entering his prime... before they have even had a single practice!, let alone a single game rep.

The way I see it is that the OL was one of the only parts of this team that was anywhere from a real liability, to subpar, mediocre, and serviceable last season. If anything, the changes should excite people. I'd be way more frustrated if we just kept almost everything the same like we did last year.

Fair enough, and you raise some good points.

It's true that my and others initial reasons for skepticism may turn out to be unfounded. One other reason that I feel we may become more conservative this year is because we now have a first time play caller. I have a bad feeling that McD is going to exert more influence over Dorsey to remain "balanced".

I agree with Mango's comment that cost plays a huge part in this deal. Maybe with how glowingly Saffold spoke of the Bills we were able to get him on the cheap.

The OL coach doesn't dictate the style of offense. The hiring of an OL coach doesn't mean the whole organization wants to become a running team. I'd venture to guess that the GM, coaches, and ancillary staff kinda maybe sorta know what kind of player is at the helm behind center, [perhaps even more than us fans do?!] 🧐🤷🏻‍♂️

No, the Bills are not going to take what's been wildly successful the past 2 years and just say "welp... passing that much didn't work...scrap it!," turn it on its head and become the Eagles, Titans, 49ers, Browns, etc.

Overall, the Bills still ended up middle-of-the-pack in terms of % of run plays (18th @ 40%). Yes, a chunk of that is JA running, but as much of that (if not more) was designed as opposed to scrambles, but it's not even about **how often** we run. Getting more efficient would be glorious, and only does wonders for the passing game.

Reputations are a fickle thing. People act like he wasn't the OL coach for all those NO Saints teams of the decade prior that had Drew Brees having unheard of 5000+ yd passing seasons and setting records putting the ball in the air.

    I appreciate your snark.

If we are to remain a pass centric team, would it not make sense to build your line around blockers who excel in that area instead of potentially weakening what you do best? Especially when you have a highly paid, superstar quarterback? Saffold also does not even seem like a fit for the zone scheme that Kromer runs.

And thanks for the amazing revelation that an Oline coach alone does not dictate philosophy. I'm going to venture to guess that one of the reasons the Saints threw the ball so much was because they had absolutely atrocious defenses, and their head coach was, you know, Sean Payton? One of the most progressive, innovative play callers in NFL history.

On the other hand, McDermott, while having made strides in becoming less conservative, is still a defensive coach by trade. One could easily argue that if the ball hadn't been taken out of Allen's hands the first 2 possessions of the 2nd half against KC, we might be in a very different place now

I don't think it's crazy at all to question if our commitment to the run is going to increase going into next season, especially given the widely reported rift between Daboll and McDermott.
