For the longest time there has been a debate with my friends about who the greatest Defensive End was during the time we started watching football in the late 80’s and into the 90’s.

Back then we thought we had the best DE in the NFL in Bruce Smith.  Others considered Reggie White, from Philly, at the time to be the best.

Now that we have the benefit of hindsight, the question is...who was really better?

Statistically there really isn’t much difference.  Reggie played 15 seasons with 198 sacks.  Bruce played 17 with 200 sacks.  Of course, Bruce is the all-time leader.   Both men should be considered toward as the best DE’s ever.

I hate to say it, but I’m going to give the edge to Reggie.  I think he was a much better leader and impacted the game more than Bruce did.

For many years, I would argue in favor Bruce but one game made me change my mind.  What sealed the deal for me was in a 1996 playoff game.  Bruce had the flu and was questionable to play.  This happens quite a bit in the NFL and players usually play through sickness.  So I was really shocked when he missed the game.  Pittsburgh scored 40 points so the team definitely could’ve used Bruce.

I immediately thought of the Thanksgiving game against Dallas where Reggie played with a severely injured arm.  He should have missed several weeks but he played through it.  Thinking of that made me say “It’s official, Reggie is better.”

As an adult, I can see the flawed logic there, but forgetting that incident, it doesn’t change my answer.  Bruce was fantastic, but I think Reggie was the greatest of all-time.

Bruce played 19 years not 17. Bruce had only 2 more sacks in 4 more seasons played. I agree that Reggie was the better of the two and the greatest of all time. They are definitely the top 2 though.

Short of winning a Super Bowl (and that may not even do it) will convince the NFL or the media that Buffalo is a respectable, upstanding community, & franchise . Every thing that happens with in the Bills region is never good enough !!

Brandon Beane in his short tenure here has taken a team with a dismal at best cap situation/roster & turned it into one of the better situations in the entire NFL but does he get any props for doing so ? NO !! Then there's the NFL exec that said earlier this year he doesn't see the direction that Beane is taking the Bills in to be a good one ...  WHAT?

In 2 short years the direction & out look of our Buffalo Bills has made a turn to look better than it has in 17 yrs & no one gives the Bills credit where it is due ! Being one of the older clubs to go through all the ups & downs of the economy over the years not to mention the economy of the area it self not being the greatest yet they have always pulled through but not according to the Jerry's of the league and the Bills not being "America's Team" ? BS !! sorry ? the Bills are always on the out side looking in it seems !!

I read a article that tells how the reigning Super Bowl champs a team that has been on a unprecedented winning streak for some 20 yrs have done so good at balancing their cap & all NS tell us something we don't know !! If they hadn't done that do you think they would have the winning record as long as they have ? Not thinking so just saying !!

But the teams like our Bills that have been irrelevant & out of the play offs for a record amount of time & have finally pulled themselves out of a hole & are beginning to look as if they are heading in a good direction under BB & McD get no props !! COME ON MAN !!

    https://billswire.usatoday.com/2019/05/31/bills-brandon-beane-snubbed-on-list-recognizing-cap-management/

Then last but definitely not least there is Goodell a native of the area, he grew up in Jamestown & knows more than most about the area & what the people can financially afford,  he talks about how the Bills need a new stadium (toting the NFL line)  to stay relevant .

Not one mention of the state of the art work out & rehab facilities the Pegs have built at the stadium, he never once mentions how much the players dig where & who they are playing for but it's always the down side of things never finding the good in what's happening here ! And how a brand new stadium is the only way the Bills can stay relevant

Bottom line !! If the Bills win they will come & it doesn't matter if they are playing in a $1.6 Billion brand new stadium or they are still at New Era but that's not in the NFL's best interest !!

I for one hope the Bills kick every ones A** with out a new stadium & proves them all wrong, the NFL , the Media all of them (evil laughter)  ? HA HA HA HA HA !!!

We would be the only team that can win the Super Bowl and still only get Sunday 1pm games when the schedule comes out

We love Kay Adams, right? In this segment, they go ‘round the room discussing who the best CB playing today is. Ms. Adams believes it’s Tre White.

I love the Survivor Series comparison for 2018.

I like Kay Adams for other reasons. Not necessarily for talking good things about the Bills. ?

    Can’t recall her name

I know Molly Qerim was on there for a while. She used to be on the NFL Network before to. She is right up there as well. I don't know which I like more though. The NFL Network is loaded with eye candy though with Kay, Taylor Bisciotti, Erin Coscarelli, Colleen Wolfe, even Lindsay Rhodes. I think Kay is the Best looking though

  5. The show's producers: "Okay, time for a little Bills talk now"

    Analysts: "Ugh...do we have to?

Producers: "I know, I know, we'll only make it two minutes worth of coverage so we can get back to talking about the Pats mini camp coverage and talk about....who's that QB they drafted?"

    Analysts: "Jarrett Stidham?"

Producers: "Yeah, him. We'll make sure that we talk about his jock and how great of a successor he will be to Brady, ok?"

Analysts: (sighs) "I guess we could do two minutes of Bills coverage"

Just to add, because I don't think the situation for Moulds and Jones are the same. While Moulds is a guy who made it, I feel like there are way more guys who struggled like Zay and washed out. The Troy Williamsons, Charles Rogers, Laquon Treadwells of the world. That is how I view Zay. In the case of a guy like Treadwell, he's only been targeted 91 times in his career. He is going to wash out without ever really getting an opportunity and playing behind better players. The caveat is that we don't know how these guys are performing on the practice field. Zay is playing by default and being targeted by default. I don't feel as if Zay has earned the reps, but that is just my own assumption and bias. I don't remember a lot of the details of why Moulds was bad the first couple of years, I was a 14 year old kid running around, but I don't think Zay is struggling to pick up the NFL game. But I also think, that if the Bills had better players the Zay's first two years, he would not have seen the field. He was given a ton of opportunities and he blew most of them. Maybe he was not ready to be on the field. I actually think he is a smart player, who understands zones and things of that nature. I don't think he is struggling to pick up the game or the offense. He is struggling to make plays, and that is why I question his talent. He is struggling with things like catching the ball, running fast, blocking, making plays on contested catches. He showed some skill in that regard in college, so I have a tiny glimmer of hope that he finds his game. I don't think Jones has been inconsistent his first two years, I think he has been downright awful. I don't know if it's an effort thing, a focus thing, a talent thing, or a little bit of all of that. And if it weren't for what he showed in college, I would have already cut him. My whole thing is , that there are now people on the roster who are hungry and can do things that he can't do. So I very much think that he is on notice.

I think there is a pretty much zero percent chance we see a Moulds like break out because I just don't think Zay Jones is talented enough. He's had the opportunity to show his talent and he has shown very little. I thinks he's a basically David Nelson without the size and with a better prospect pedigree. I am not waiting to see Zay's game click, I am waiting to see his talent, and to me it appears that there isn't much there. There is a place on a roster for a guy like that, but the minute you get some better players, he is out. That's where I am at.

Zay has been way more productive than Williamson, Charles Rodgers and Laquon Treadwell. Zay hasn't been great by any means but he has been better than those guys. I don't even think it's close. I know Zay has been getting targeted by default most likely but the guy had 7 TDs last year alone which is more than any of them have had in their careers. Yes, he has had more targets but just from a skill set I don't think he is nearly on the same level as them. If Zay was that bad, believe me, he would not be on the field. Zay was a 2nd rounder and those guys were all 1st rounders and their teams didn't care about where they were drafted, if they weren't good enough, they weren't seeing the field. Will he wash out of the league? Its possible but unless he is insanely bad over the next year or two, I don't see it. He would have to be a complete non factor at some point for that to happen.

I think you are missing MrEps point.  Moulds didnt break out because he wasn't on the field, getting the reps, getting the targets.  Zay on the other hand has been a starter for 2 years with 176 targets.  Its NOT the same story.

I understood his point completely. Moulds didn't see the field or that many targets because he was struggling to learn the game the first 2 years. It had nothing to do with how many receivers we had or that he was behind Reed. He broke out in 98 because it started to click for him. Moulds was very inconsistent his first 2 seasons

Id have to go back and watch the games to really know, but I remember Moulds flashing big play abilty and I do remember people being dissapointed that he was not consistent. You make a lot good points, and I understand the idea that people can develop. But Zay has shown no signs that he might be more than he is, which is a mediocre receiver. Is he an NFL receiver? Yes he deserves to be in the league. But he is just meh and will probably not make it to a significant second contract. He's like Jordan Mathews without the size or good hands.

Yes, Moulds was very inconsistent his first two seasons. Lots of dropped balls, not winning on routes, I remember thinking how I thought he was gonna be a bust. He was a completely different receiver in year 3. It just took time for him to adjust. This will be a make or break year for Zay. I think he did make a few strides last year but this is the year he has to take it to the next level. If he doesn't then I feel it would be time to move on

Zero is one word. Did you read the rest? Look at targets? Consider that Early and Reed were very old when Moulds broke out? Moulds did not have enough targets his first two years to make a significant impact. Zay was targeted 176 times in two years and has less than a thousand yards receiving. It isn't about just playing time. It's about targets, That's what I mean when I talk about opportunity. Zay will never be able to come close to Eric Moulds. He doesn't have it.

Maybe Moulds didn't have enough targets because he wasn't earning it on the field his first two years? I know you and other people don't wanna believe that it takes certain players a little extra time to grasp the NFL game but that's what happened to Moulds. Reed and Early were still very productive at that point in their careers. Reed's level of play didn't sink so much from 1996 which was Mould's rookie season until he broke out in 1998. One could even argue with the amount of double coverages that Reed faced in Moulds first two years that Moulds should have feasted on secondaries but he didn't. He broke out in 1998 with the exact same receiving core he had his two prior years. Yes, Moulds had poor QB play his second year but it still didn't affect Andre Reed any. Zay has shown flashes or glimpses of being a more than capable NFL receiver. Sure he's had some drops but he had big progress from year 1 to year 2 and year 1 he had Tyrod who barely threw and had 150 yards a game. Zay should excel this year being in the system for 3 years and having more weapons around him

Jones and Moulds are nothing alike.

I mean Moulds' first year he was playing with prime Andre Reed and behind Quinn Early and did not get a ton of opportunities. His second year he played with Todd Collins. And I do remember people feeling like he was a bust. Year three was his breakout with Doug Flutie and Andre Reed clearly on the downside at 34. IIt was also the first time he really got a legit opportunity to play.

    Look at the numbers:

1996 Moulds started 5 games. He was targeted 37 times and had 20 receptions.

1997 Moulds started 8 games. He was targeted 52 times and had 29 receptions. Not sure if Todd Collins sucked more than Tyrod. It's debatable.

1998 Moulds started 15 games. He was targeted 116 times and had 67 receptions for 1,368 yards and 20.4 yards per reception and 9 touchdowns. (Aside from a December game against the Raiders, none of these games were blowouts with garbage time.) This was also during a time where the league was not as pass happy as it is now.

Even in his early years, there was some evidence of game breaking ability. But people did question him, despite the lack of targets and opportunities.

2017 Jones started 10 games. He was targeted 74 times and had 27 receptions. (Plus a sweet playoff game with 2 catches on 4 targets for 20 yards.)

2018 Jones started 15 games. He was targeted 102 times and had 56 receptions for  652 yards and 11.6 yards per receptions and 7 TDs. (remember that these stats were padded in garbage time play)

I think this is not an apt comparison. One guy had zero opportunity to play and when he finally got the chance he broke out in a huge way. the other has had a million opportunities and has been super mediocre.

Jones was targeted 102 times and hd just 652 yards. To me that is a staggering number. One of these guys was a game breaking player who sat behind a legend and HOF player his first two years and when he had his chance to shine, broke out. In two years Zay Jones has been targeted 176 times and has 83 career catches and less than 1000 yards. 176 targets and less than 100 yards!!! That's crazy. He has been a focal point of the offense and has put up very mediocre and pedestrian numbers. He has had these opportunities because of his draft status. Anybody else would have been cut. He's lucky we've been in a rebuild. That, and his draft status are the only reasons he is still around.

What do you mean zero opportunity to play? Quinn Early was here in 1998 just like he was in the first 2 years of Moulds career as was Andre Reed. The Bills also had Kevin Williams as well in 1998. Moulds didn't play as much or as well his first two years because he wasn't as good of a player or the light didn't go on yet. Year 3 was when the light went on for him and he started to get it and that is why he got more playing time. Not because of the amount of receivers we had

Even before Sammy I had a debate with someone here once about JP Losman being three first round picks....... the two that we spent to get him and the one that we gave up in 2005. I tried, gallantly to explain that one of the two we used to get him was the one from 2005..... but it wasn't computing. I can't remember who the poster was and I think they have left the forum now to be honest but it went on for about 3 hours. He wasn't having that it was two first round picks. He was insistent it was 3.

The only thing I remember about the first round of that draft was that we had one first rounder which we drafted Lee Evans with and then we gave up our 2005 first rounder to move back up into the first round to get Losman. So we only we only gave up one first for him which would have been the 2005 first. If I remember correctly

No doubt Brady is a huge part of their success, but they went 11-5 with Cassel under center when Brady tore his ACL in game 1.

That's because their schedule was ridiculously easy. 4 of the 5 losses they had were against teams with winning records and 9 of their 11 wins were against teams with losing records, 5 of which were teams that finished 5-11 or worse. Any coach could have done that that season with a schedule like that

I don't care what you post for last season. How many times was Gilmore burnt to a crisp in Buffalo? He didn't even play that well his first year in NE. He had one great season since he got drafted in 2012 and you're gonna tell me he's better than Tre'Davious when Tre'Davious has already been a better player in two years than Gilmore was his first 6 years in the league?

Gilmore was an all pro last year and talked about as the best cb in football. White is very good but he’s not there yet.  It’s almost like Belichick knew more about a player than Bills fans. ?

Tre'Davious has locked down top receivers both of his years in the league and is barely thrown at. When has that ever been the case with Gilmore? I know people wanna blow Bill Belichick and think he can do no wrong but come on dude

CB1 and CB2 in 2016 were both better. Sorry, Gilmore is better than Tre and Darby is better than who ever is on the roster.  Add in Robey-Coleman and that group was just better.

McDermott improved that position by choosing not to sign/franchise Gilmore, traded Darby and let Coleman walk.

Gilmore was better than Tre'Davious? I'm not sure about that
