True -- and you can look no further that Robert Edwards to see why this is the case. Edwards was a first round RB for the Patriots out of Michigan and had a promising career ahead of him. He blew out his knee in an offseason flag-football game and his career was done. Without the luxury of a guaranteed contract, it is critical for players to get as much up-front money as they can. -
Spikes not happy with Witner selection

Milloy was Spikes' best friend on the team -- so he was disappointed he got cut. But he's definitely not disappointed about the Whitner pick. -

If Ko Simpson was as good as Reggie Bush, he'd do the exact same thing. NFL players, on average, have very short careers. To make matters worse, unlike their MLB and NBA counterparts, their contracts are not guaranteed. So when a player has an opportunity to max out on what he can get, he simply should. All it takes is one blow to the knee to end his career. Comparing Bush to TO is simply not valid or fair. -

Reggie Bush vs. Ko Simpson Let that be the last time we make that comparison. -
Interesting article on special teams

Not bad. The roster you propose leaves the team very thin at corner behind the starters Clements and McGee, especially considering one of them is a first year player and the other is a second year player. My guess is the team keeps another corner, perhaps Greer. Keeping 3 strong safeties just doesn't make sense. You can plug Bowen in Wire's spot and not have much of a drop-off in special teams. I also hope the team doesn't cut ties with Shaud Williams. He improved with each game and got some great exposure last year as the 3rd down back. -

We have a COACHING STAFF on the payroll to tutor players. I can't wait to see what Simpson can do on the field. He seems like he has all the tools to be successful. He just needs to go out and do it. -

Perhaps I was being a bit harsh. I have nothing against TV's role as NFLPA president. I do, however, feel that this team needs to stop trying to have it both ways and part ways with players who are over the hill and are on the downside of their career. They did it with Moulds. They did it with Milloy. They did it with Adams. Vincent is no different. I don't agree with the notion that starting Simpson could slow his development. I think the single best way for a youngster to learn his trade is to play. Will he make mistakes? Sure he will -- but what better year to do that than this year, which is clearly a rebuilding year. This lack of identity cost the team another year of uncertainty at the QB position. Rather than stick with JP all season long, Mularkey wavered and put Holcomb in and now we are left wondering what JP Losman is capable of. -

Ko Simpson should push Vincent out the door. I would start him immediately and cut TV... but that's just me. -

Coy Wire is one of the best guys on the Bills' roster. He is also probaly the WORST player on the Bills' roster. He should not be on an NFL roster, his time is up. With Bowen and Whitner in the fold this year, Wire is as good as gone. -
But what if you can have both? In a draft as deep as this one, you can.
-
This is a rebuilding year. There is no way around that issue and Marv himself has admitted that. With that in mind, the draft should be treated as a way to build a solid foundation for many years to come. If the goal was to compete in the immediate year, then we would not have released Lawyer Milloy or Sam Adams, both of whom had some gas left in the tank. If you don't agree, ask Marvin Lewis and Rich McKay -- both respected, NFL personnel men from playoff teams who signed the aforementioned players to start in their resepctive defenses. If this represents an obligation to the fans to compete in the near-term, you simply don't release those guys with years left on their contract at a palpable price. But that was not the message sent to the fans. The message was that this team needs to get younger and build for the future. In my opinion, surrendering picks is not the way to go unless it is a can't-miss prospect.
-
I have grasped that concept... the question comes down to this: Would you rather have: A late first round pick? -or- A high 2nd and high 3rd rounder? If I was New England, I'd trade up (as they did for Chad Jackson). If I were Pittsburgh, I'd trade up (as they did for Holmes) Buffalo is in a much different situation... they need as many good, young players as possible. In that situation, I'd rather have the high 2nd and high 3rd.
-
I think after the first round, Marv did a phenomenal job with the draft, nabbing the likes of Youboty and Simpson... but to give up a 2nd and 3rd rounder (picks we desperately need as a rebuilding team) to take McCargo and to take Whitner with a top 10 pick definitely made me wonder what the hell they were thinking. Yes, safety was a pressing need but there were pressing needs throughout the roster. I will give Marv the benefit of the doubt because I like most of the moves he has made -- time will tell, I suppose.
-
You are right. Antoine Winfield-level production would not be enough to justify this pick. Whitner has to be a perennial all-pro caliber player to justify taking the second safety off the board that high. Time will tell.
-
What I mean is that there were opportunities for positive yards that weren't taken advantage of. I blame part of that on the complexity of the scheme (which seems to be universally agreed upon by the players) and part of it on Willis' lack of execution.
-
Though few and far between, there often WERE holes that Willis didn't hit because he hesitated first.
-
I agree that Mularkey's scheme was pretty bad, but another issue was the fact that Willis appeared to dance around before hitting the hole -- it was very evident on tape and even the coaches called him out on it, yet it continued to happen. Often times, runs that could have been 4-5 yards were stopped at the line of scrimmage because Willis was hesitant to hit the hole. That said, I think part of the reason he was hesitating was that the scheme was more complex than it needed to be.

I like this roster...looking at depth chart
Dawgg replied to TC in St. Louis's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
First off, I said in my opinion. Second, it's not as much of an unknown as you think. Triplett and McCargo offer solid depth at one DL position. However, the other remains an area of concern. You don't need to sit down and watch the 2006 season unfold to figure that out. We know what Tim Anderson can do and the bottom line is he's not an NFL starting caliber player. As a second string player, he's great -- but he doesn't cut it as a starter. Behind Tim Anderson, who is left? Ron Edwards is gone and we have a bunch of scrubs waiting in the wings. The bottom line is that the interior of the defensive line did not improve significantly... hopefully scheme can make up for that. -

This defense cannot stop the run. And the problem was far beyond Takeo Spikes. It was a combination of poor tackling, little penetration in the middle of the defense (Triplett will help, but the loss of PW still looms large). If this team can make strides in stopping the run, then yes I will be optimistic. However, I have little reason to believe they will. McCargo is a rookie who plays the same position as Triplett. At other interior DL position, Tim Anderson is not a starting caliber player. Stopping the run is still a problem area IMO. -

Brodrick Bunkley struggled on offseason workouts
Dawgg replied to syhuang's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This is a load of crap, typical of the junk written during the boring offseason because there is no other news to write about. On Sunday, when the lights are on and he puts his pads on can he play? My guess is yes. I read a similar article about Nate Clements during his first rookie training camp -- saying he was having a tough time grasping GW's offense and the Bills were concerned... he ended up playing pretty well, so I wouldn't put much stock in these reports. -
Diagree on these points: First of all, don't forget that the Pats drafted arguably the BEST runner in the draft in Maroney. So I would in fact say that Dillon + Maroney >>>> McGahee. Second, Gandy should be compared to Matt Light, not Kaczur -- and make no mistake Gandy doesn't hold a candle to Matt Light. Third: Reyes > Mankins? You sure about that? Fourth: Schobel = Seymour??? Not quite. Seymore is a class above Schobel, even though Schobel is good in his own right. Fifth: Evans and Price are below Branch and Chad Jackson. Evans has yet to prove he's a #1 receiver. Branch has year in and year out.
