The NFL is really great at fixing what isn't broken. We've got the best sports league in America? Let's change a bunch of stuff even though it's not clear that the fans want it, spit in the face of player safety by adding more games per season, and devalue the regular season by adding more playoff games!

    Great job, guys. Well done.

It's going to be a real shame watching this league destroy itself because of greed.

It's called profit motive in capitalism. If you don't like it, go live in Russia!

In reality most medical breakthroughs and advancements are made by researchers at universities, not private companies.  And most of the funding for research is from government grants.  Companies are great at monetizing the advancements, but it’s rare that the people who did the actual work get much out of it financially.

This is exactly correct. The public pays for the R&D and the private sector reaps the rewards. Socialize the risk; Privatize the rewards. We pay for the research and development and then pay again in the market.  Same exact scenario with tech companies.

I doubt he ends up playing for any of the Florida teams.  Jacksonville has too much invested in Foles.  Miami is out unless he just wants a big payday to babysit someone.  Tampa, maybe but only if he thinks Arians has that team to win now, which I don't they are

I think this is just a long term family planning move.  After he retires the taxes in Florida are much saner than the taxes in Soviet Califonia

Haha! Soviet. That's a joke. This place is mucho capitalist. Everything here favors the super rich, business owners, gentrification, etc. Working class people are displaced everyday while the major capitalists in the state skirt all the tax laws and get all the benefits. It is capitalist welfare state. Not socialist or communist.

Of course, I say this with the assumption that you have read Marx, Lenin, etc. And that you know what Marxism, Stalinism, etc. is.

But truthfully, California is a neoliberal capitalist state. Period.

Perhaps you're referring to the social aspects in the state like gender rights and anti-racism. But you would be hardpressed to argue that the Soviets were open to that.

Finally, getting welfare benefits in this state is exceptionally difficult. The public health care is only for super super poor. Same with food. Housing assistance is impossible to get. And unemployment is a nightmare and takes forever to get benefits.

I know this is about Phillip Rivers,  but I hate this straight up ######ed assumption about Cali.

A lot of people have messed up childhoods and don't go on to murder anyone. I get your point and intentions, but I wouldn't waste your energy feeling bad for a guy like this. Feel bad for the ones who deserve it.

And that's the catch all excuse for football players... And I'm sick of seeing it used as an excuse.

I know. My Aunt uses her dementia the same way! Sick of hearing it!!

  5. While I think that a team's marketability and profits play a role in how the games are shaped, there are other dimensions that determine a game's outcome.

For instance, and most obvious, the way the players play. This still matters.

What bothered me about the game was the grossly apparent advertising for Watt, the American hero. It seems the NFL loves to promote this aspect. It makes sense, though, as it seems this white nationalism is alive and well right now.

But overall, while marketing and profits contribute to the outcomes of games, the Bills should have played better and should have won, despite marketing Watt and America.

People make comments like this all the time.  The comment demonstrates that you aren't listening to what McBeane have been saying since they got to Buffalo.

The process is designed to build a team that has sustained long-term success.  That means that they're looking for the kind of success that New Orleans and New England and Kansas City have - that is, success where the team keeps winning even thought the players keep changing.  That's what they mean when they talk about building the right way.

So, for example, the Bills went for quantity instead of quality in free agency in 2019.   Other than Morse, they didn't sign a premier free agent on the offensive line.   They signed a lot of journeymen, expecting to get exactly what they got - decent improvement on the offensive line.  They'll decide that one of two of those guys are keepers, and they'll get some new talent next year.  In other words, they didn't bet the farm with the expectation that they could become a Super Bowl contender in 2019.

It's not an accident that the "Championship Caliber" sign went up late this season.  McDermott sets goals with the expectation that once a goal is achieved, they won't go backward.   The goal for 2019 was to become Playoff Caliber, and when that goal was achieved, the goal was changed.   That sign will stay up now.   Every player on this team now knows that that goal is achievable.

There is nothing that anyone ever has said that this is the seven year slog that you make up to be contrarian.

This is one of the youngest teams in the league, with a lot of cap room and ten draft picks and a process in place designed to generate continuous improvement.   6-10 to 10-6, including conceding a loss in the final game, together with going overtime in a Wildcard game, is substantial improvement.   Just because you're unhappy that your team didn't do better doesn't mean that the Bills are seriously on the move.

This is all true, but Allen has to get better. That's the most important factor.

So far, Josh has had a better performance than any other QB not named Watson (and he still out gained him by a considerable margin of total yards). Brees, Brady, Tannehill, and Cousins have all been pretty bad. I guess my message is that the playoffs are an entire different beast. Allen gets absolutely ripped apart for his mistakes, yet when you compare him to all others so far, he may have had the 2nd best performance of the playoffs. Get him some weapons and another legit RB, and we're in business.

In retrospect the difference in most games comes down to a few plays. We had so many players and coaches leave plays on the field yesterday yet we were a few play away. I wasn’t pissed waking up today because yesterday confirmed what I already knew. We still have talent needs.

Knox + 2 OL whiffing on that QB sweep block that would have set up the winning FG.

Bills having a 3rd and 1 before kicking the tying FG and Daboll dials up our worst play a screen which we never execute and we bite it for a giant loss. Then McD goes for it on 4th and 23 instead of punting them inside the 10 and trusting the defense. We could have been playing for a win and not a tie in that last minute.

Feliciano looking clueless at least 5-6 times against the exact same inside move when they would have Watt rush inside. Mainly going untouched most of the time.

John Brown’s non attempt to drag his feet on a long pass instead doing a weird bunny hop and giving himself no chance to get even one foot down. If that is Diggs, it’s a catch.

Duke Williams being targeted 10 times? Why ?? He Isn’t a WR1. He didn’t have any separation when he was targeted.

Siran Neal getting cocky after his first sack blitzes from the other side and doesn’t use wrap up technique...ball game.

Edmunds leaving plays all over the field from the two point conversion angle to various poor gap assignments to not recognizing Fells when he was lurking in his zone.

Matt Milano missed at least 3 sacks or TFL by running past the QB or RB. Same problem he had with Lamar. Playing with speed but needs to play with control also.

3rd and 18 and Frazier dials up a soft zone. That never works out with a QB that can extend the play.

Finally Josh Allen. Another fumble, almost two. The weird pitch was stupid which could have made it three. The tossup to DiMarco was stupid ( what play design has a slow FB running deep?)  Running backward to avoid a sack in FG range is always stupid.

The point is everyone left some big plays on the field and we still barely lost even though we have deficient talent at WR, RB2, LB, DE, and made some coaching errors.

I AM CALM TODAY. WE WILL BE BACK AND BETTER NEXT YEAR, WIN THE AFC EAST, AND TEAMS WILL START TO FEAR US.

i went to to the 89 game in Cleveland and this game is that moment for this team. The prime difference is this team is younger and we don’t have a QB who already had played 5 years of pro football. I am very proud of this team and excited about their future.

Great post. Kelly became one of the best in the league the next season, if not the best. The 1990 Bills we practically unstoppable because Kelly was amazing in the no huddle. Allen doesn't have to be that good, but if he can get somewhere near that good, we will have a great team for a long time, like the early 90s Bills with Kelly.

  9. I think we can win with McDermott as the coach if Allen makes some improvements and we get a couple more good players on offense. The schedule is a bit harder (at least it looks that way right now), but we are trending in the right direction. To me, Allen is the key. If he improves, we will continue to make the playoffs. If he doesn't, we wont. Of course, he needs one really good receiver. He needs another RB as good as Singletary and one more O-Line guy. Other than that, we are in good shape, as long as he gets better.

Again, I think McDermott can take us forward. But if we could get a guy like Arians, Carroll, or Reid that would really help a lot. McDermott is definitely flawed and I do not think he can overcome his flaws as they have been apparent since he started in Buffalo. But if Allen can get it together and they can get a couple more good players, McDermott has enough good coaching attributes to get us there.

  10. Those who picked Allen in this poll before the game took a gamble. They bet on Allen. All of the evidence suggested that Watson was a far better QB. Yet, some people chose Allen. This is a bit baffling, since Allen didn't even have that great of a season. He definitely improved from 2018, but his season was pretty average. I think everybody wanted Allen to have a great game against Houston, regardless of who they voted for in this poll. Allen has potential and we will see if he becomes as good as Watson next season. But Watson is a great QB and should have won this poll by a landslide. If Allen can become as good as Watson, we will be in the playoffs for years to come. Go Allen and Go Bills for 2020!
