    Well said.

Many here wanted to see a guy who could quickly diagnose a play, hit the right gap, shed blocks, and be a thumper. Nope.

Tremaine was more of a lanky safety that could cover a lot of ground, get in the way of passes, and prevent 5 yard plays from turning into 15-20 yard plays.

He was very good at reading and reacting to a QBs eyes, but guys like Mahomes could use their eyes to work him like a joystick to free up space in the secondary.

Good QBs we run into down the stretch can do that well.

This defense missed him when he was not on the field, but not enough that it would justify taking on a crippling salary.

We did not see the TFLs, the INTs, the FFs one would hope to see, but some of that was scheme, some just the way Tremaine played.

I felt he had improved each year, but the problem with drafting a player high for their upside, and investing years to realize that potential, is that the player simply cashes out once they turn the corner.

Not blaming him, it was the obvious move for Edmunds.

Loved that “worked him like a joystick.”  Prolly true for elite QBs,  but OCs had to game plan for him.  Hope he plays like $70 million.

  2. Maybe Diggs has burnt some bridges in locker room.  I can see him getting in guys faces about not being all in.  As a leader that works sometimes in private conversations, but you can’t show guys up in front of others.  If he’s done that more than a couple of times,  he’s now toxic.  If so, he needs to do some powerful repair work or move on.  Leaders must be respectful.  If he is traded it will be because he needs another new start.  I hope all my conjecture is false.

The Bills can restructure his contract if they signed him.

Also, elite players help win Superbowls.

Henry is a top 3 back in the league, paired with Josh, Diggs, Knox, etc. our offense gets very scary.

People think Henry was good with zero semblance of a passing game, imagine teams having to plan to stop those Bills.

It can be true that we would get way more value out of his 11m per year than the Titans ever did. This doesn’t mean he would have more yards, TDs, etc with the Bills but that his presence would mean more because of everything else that needs to be accounted for.

why is everyone so scared of the CAP? We can get 50 million under the cap without doing much at all

Bingo!!  We’d have the best offense since SB Bills, maybe better.

My only problem with the question is that everyone's expectations are different.  People simply wanting entertaining football, as some have even said as a standard, will be satisfied.  Those of us that sat in the cold for the '90s playoff games walking into the games expecting to win them all, and we did, at home, have a different expectation, one that's at least as lofty as it was back then.  Allen > Kelly.  To whom more is given, more is expected.

A better question would be, Has McDermott done what he's said he would do?

McD's expectations were to have won a Championship by now as well.  So were mine given Allen.  In fact, I dare say, or perhaps ask, how many people responding in this poll as the beginning of the season had the expectation of winning it all this year prior to the season starting?  Those people, unless they answered "fell short," aren't being honest.

My question would be, ... Have McD & Beane left the team on the field this coming season consistent with their own rhetoric and narratives when they started here, or have they fallen short?  If short, then why.

JK12’s teams > JA17’s teams.  What’s amazing about Allen is he has won a lot with a team that would be maybe 7 wins without him.  That’s the brutal facts.

As someone who watches a LOT of UGA football, Washington is neither a 1st round talent, nor a playmaker.

I'd project him to us in the 3rd or later, and that would be a great grab. But definitely not a 1st and not even a 2nd.

Would love to get him in 3rd, but someone will get him in round 2.

Even the RBs that they selected (when first round RBs were not such a bad idea) were terrible moves. The reason for this is that they would draft running backs and place them behind absolutely horrid offensive lines. It is something of a Bills tradition (except for a season or 2).

In 1997 the Bills drafted Antwain Smith with pick #23. His career was nothing to get excited about but again, the blocking was pathetic. Also, if they really wanted a RB, they could have drafted Corey Dillon who was taken 20 picks later (#43), and was a VERY good player. Not bad enough? Adam Meadows (a fine RT for many years) was drafted with pick #48. The Bills truly were in need of a player like this.

In 2003, in one of the all time dumb draft decisions (however not THE dumbest) the Bills ever made, they selected Willis MaGahee at #23.  His injury in college was just so bad that he missed 1 1/4 seasons of football before he played a single down for the Bills. I know that you are against first round guards and I get it, but I was watching that draft screaming for the Bills to draft Eric Steinbach, who went to the Bengals with the first pick of round two. It turned out that Steinbach was an excellent guard and also filled in at LT and wasn't so bad.

Ironically, much of what fans are saying now is the same thing we heard way back when, such as "MaGahee is good!" Yes, he was good. Smith might have been OK too but this was an improper way to build a football team, even back then. Now we have McDermott (notice I didn't say Beane) chasing first round corners and undersized DTs. I hope that it stops. It HAS to!!! We need to protect who I consider to be the most talented QB in football, bar none. Josh can and will win us a Super Bowl if they bring him weapons and protect him. It's just that simple imo.

    End of rant. 🙂🏈🙂

Agree.  Must go OL in R1 and R2.  Even if Robinson is there in R1, hard pass.  Our #1 RB should be Cook next year.  He’ll add 15 lbs and will be elite. Go Bills!

Yeah, I use that term to also give him a bit more benefit of the doubt than a lot of us (myself included) have given him in the past. It is certainly a fairly unique role he plays, so it is tough to get a read on any real comparison or expectation.

I was a huge detractor, but what brought me around at least a little bit was watching the extensive Cover1 videos discussing his responsibilities and the calls and decisions he has to make during a play. Not even between plays. In the middle of the play while it is coming right at him. It's a lot.

Since not many other coaches are... "bold" (cough) enough to use this scheme, the best I've found is to compare him to Luke Kuechly.

And if you look at Kuechley's first 5 years and compare them to Edmund's first 5 years, Tremaine is still greatly lacking.

    LK 12 Ints

    TE 5 Ints

    LK 4 Forced Fumbles

    TE 2 Forced Fumbles

    LK 9 sacks

    TE 6.5 sacks

    LK 42 Pass Defended

    TE 35 Pass Defended

LK outranks him in just about every category over his first 5 years, I wont bother to list them all. You can see them in the links above.

    Good stuff.  Thanks Doc!

This must be the most difficult decision Beane has faced, because similar but opposite of you, I have been staunchly against re-signing him the last 4 years, but have changed my tune after this season.

Edmunds play, and the fog of his responsibilities, makes it almost impossible for us to properly decide whether it is worth re-signing him or not. Couple that with the "what ifs" that pop up when discussing using that money on Offense instead. But there are no guarantees Beane will spend on Offense even if Edmunds walks. So...

    I have no clue.

I like that metaphor “fog of his responsibilities.”  I’m in a fog about what he does well (eg - no shacks, no interceptions, few pressures or run stuffs).  I guess the NFL coaches must think he’s gold because he’s about to bring home Ft. Knox.

I apologize for my LAMP post, you didn't really post anything bad I had read some stuff prior for others that had me in an annoyed mindset (the fanbase has been pretty negative and unruly lately). My point I think this is the best shot for the next few years a team will get in division at Buffalo as all three of them are looking at change if they can't hit some level of success in 23.

If you want to feel better the actually rate of players starting their first year is pretty low the entire time and having an impact is not incredibly large. The Jets last year did what the Bills did in 2017 with three true starters (Sauce, Wilson, Johnson, Hall) that made major impacts. By the same token it is really hard to get that level of impact yearly and because they had a better season their draft picks are lower. The Patriots have so many positions of need, even if they had some hits it will only do so much. I really do not fear NE much at all at this point and think MIA/NYJ are far stronger across the board minus coaching. NE needs a billion things to go right to become any form of a contender and they potentially have the worst QB of the bunch if the Jets get Carr or Rodgers.

The Jets could be a real issue if they get a QB, but we split with them last year anyway so if Buffalo is 4-2 again it isn't anything of trouble. The larger issue comes schedule wise where NY could eat some easier wins.

In the end though unless a team gets a QB of Josh's level Buffalo consistently has a sizeable advantage that is hard to match yearly. Cheers

Thanks.  I enjoy the depth of your posts and many others that know football better than me.  I don’t know much, but I do know that JA17 always gives us a chance to be the only team winning the last game.

  10. Hey Corta:  Nice post.  Last week I posted a concerned about our division possibilities and you gave me a LAMP response.  I respect your evaluation since I didn’t provide the depth of analysis that you’ve posted.  However, you have not eased my troubled mind. In addition to your nice description of the current status of our division rivals, I would add that the Jets and Pats have more draft capital.  Also, both are picking ahead of us, and targeting OT and WR, which are our areas of need also.  We better get better if we are to repeat as division champs.  Go Bills!!

You are probably right as the Bills have done a lot of winning since McDermott took over. But as we have seen with the Sabres, Terry is not afraid to make changes. Granted the Sabres for a long time were a joke. But fans, media, DIGGS, are starting to run out of patience with these playoff failures. Tomlin has won a Lombardi along with all of the successful seasons the Steelers have had. McDermott hasn't done that yet.

Hope we don’t look back and think that our best chance was the 13 seconds.  Bowing out early this year was a “blessing in disguise” since we didn’t have the team to win AFC or SB.  I still believe in McD.

Beane has to do 3 things well this offseason for the Bills to have a good chance to win the Super Bowl.

    1. Improve the OL. Everyone knows it's been said a billion times on this message board.

    2. Get an #2 WR

    3. Plug in the holes on D as we are probably losing Edmunds and Poyer.

I think these areas will get better.  Other AFCE teams will be better.  It would take a 7 or 8 win season to axe the coach.  Won’t happen.  Even with 13 seconds and Cincy, McD is in the same security category as Tomlin.  He’s secure unless a complete collapse which can’t happen as long as JA17 is healthy.

I hope you weren't around in 1984, 1985. You want to talk depressing times being a Bills fan back then was miserable. Back-to-back 2-14 seasons. The Bills will be fine. They won 13 games last year and Allen is the best QB in the division. Beane does have some work to do fixing the weaknesses on the roster, but they should still be a playoff team. They will probably win the division again even though the Fins and Jets (if they get a QB) will challenge them.

    Whew.  Feel better already 😂

  14. Just had a bad thought that I’d like to forget.  First, let me say that I’m the most optimistic dude about the Bills and life.  I even thought the Losman Bills could win the Super Bowl.  My bad thought is the Bills might not make the playoffs next year.  It’s happened to other great teams.  I mean we might lose Maine, Poyer, Motor, White, and now even Diggs.  Can someone please relieve my troubled mind.

Oh I think there is a small fire. I think he is pissed with the organisation for losing, pissed with Dorsey's playcalling and pissed with Josh for not getting him the ball when he is open. The question is whether the situation is salvageable. I think at the moment it definitely is. The relationship between Josh and Stef is the key one that needs fixing. It definitely fractured some down the stretch this year. They need to get together while they are off. Throw together and work out what got mixed up in their chemistry late last year. Josh is a better Quarterback when he is throwing the ball to Stef a lot. Stef is a better receiver with Josh Allen. They need each other. And for that reason I expect it gets fixed.

Doesnt SD14 see the film with JA17 running for his life?  It gets fixed when Diggs sees signing and drafting of better O line.

We were 4-3 vs playoff teams including the playoff loss.

    Ravens scored 19 on us

Even in a loss to Miami(a playoff team) we held them to 212 total yards.

The SB champs scored 20 in us.
Are they supposed to let up on non playoff teams?

Good take.  Nice to be reminded of this.  When our offense is humming, our D looks and plays better.  I bet the offense looked good in those 4 wins.  We need to pretty much stay put with our D and  rev up the offense.  Give JA17 a second more time and the D will look better.

Anyone expecting Von to be himself out the gate would be foolish.  But at the same time, its not impossible either that Von could still be good for us this year assuming he remains healthy.  But admittedly, expecting someone turning 34 in this next season to be who they were is already a tall ask, asking them to do it after an ACL tear is even a bigger ask.

That being said, its a lot different than Tre.  With a CB, the offense directly attacks that player in the passing game.  With a DE, they just want to prevent him from disrupting the play.  So its quite reasonable that Von will still garner some reasonable attention from the opposing team that could benefit the other players on the DL in their opportunities to disrupt the play.

So Von just being out there can still positively impact the team, where as a CB who is slow to react and doesn't have the explosiveness back yet like Tre dealt with this year is a much bigger liability for the defense.

Agree.  I’m hoping Von will be Von by Thanksgiving.  Yes, a great DE has to be explosive with a good first step, but much of Von’s game is upper body and nobody twists and contorts better.  Work him in slowly in first 9 games.  BTW, we lost the Cincy game due to offense.  It’s a stretch to say that Von would’ve helped.  Go with what we have on D.
