He is pretty comparable to Gibbs. Go watch the lions game again. Tell me who’d you rather have. Anyone’s “replaceable.” We can put Devin Singletary and Zach moss back there again if you want.

you then contradict yourself by saying “any top RB” is dime a dozen. What?

you just don’t think he’s worth 15M got it.  That fine.

Up until this year the power question was valid. But this year James cook really put that to bed. Honestly sick of the gaslighting of people to try and justify their $ argument. Dude runs thru KC defense in AFC Championship game. And again go back to lions game - I believe his first td run - he runs thru 5 dudes at the goal line with awesome contact balance

he’s our most explosive offensive weapon outside of Josh. I don’t where I fall on the $ number. But if Shakir , Benford , Groot got paid who are all solid players…. James cook needs to be paid … it’s that simple.

Whether now or next, 12.5 is the number.  It’s to his advantage to do now.  In those 2 years that’s 25, which is better for him to get it done now.  Make it 4 for 48 with 30 guaranteed.  Plus, he’ll win a couple Super Bowls.  Without him, the chance for a Lombardi goes down.

If Cook makes the same jump as last year, he will enter elite territory.  I say he does so.

If Cook and Coleman make a jump that’s our ticket to the big dance.  A jump by Kincade would seal the deal.  I know thats a lot of ifs, but IF these don’t happen, we’ll be watching KC or the black birds.

And just to be clear about AJ, I love him as a WR and he’d be by far our best WR and it’s not even close. Same is true of Davonte Smith.  That the Eagles have both is a function of luck, circumstance and opportunity.

But not everyone can be elite. In a world where Chase, Jefferson, Sun God, CeeDee Lamb, and scary Terry exist, I can’t call AJ Brown elite.  That’s not taking anything away from him either. But there’s some REALLY REALLY good talent out there right now.

Like Drake London never gets any publicity but he’s been incredible. He had more catches, yards and touchdowns than AJ playing on a worse team with worse QB play. We’re not gonna call him elite though.

Feel like Eagle players are getting a bit inflated because they won a Super Bowl, when the reality is they won that Super Bowl by having really good players at every position, rather than relying on a a few different stars. They won with depth, they won with versatility, and they won with a pass rush that was more about waves than any one player taking over every week. They didn’t have a single guy with double digit sacks yet they had 5 players with double digit pressures (Bills had 4).

Thats also how I want buffalo to look, and I see no reason they can’t be that

He’s simply not talented enough IMO. There’s a clear divide between the level of Barkely, Henry and pre injury Chubb that Cook doesn’t have.

And even beyond them Bijan Robinson and Jamhyr Gibbs in Detroit are a tier above Cook

Now that you put it like that, that is rarified air up there with those guys,  but, but Cook has speed, wiggle and twitch that means something big can happen each time he touches the ball.  Let’s revisit later.

They are. He just hasn't found that elite guy outside Josh...... yet! As I said earlier in the thread though Benford and Brown if they take another step can get into that territory. Cook maybe needs to take two more stepsm but isn't a mile away.

If Cook makes the same jump as last year, he will enter elite territory.  I say he does so.

No chance. McDermott would lose the locker room if he did that. Every player can see in practice that Cook moves at a different level from the RBs behind him. If McDermott put him in the doghouse because of a very common negotiation tactic, he loses his grip on the team.

They see it on the practice field and game field.  We see it.  The best thing for this season is to give him a contract tacked on.  It will happen.  Probably not 15, but will include incentives.  He’s earned it.  He got stronger this year, and he will be scary strong coming soon.

The reason you quibble is because there is a salary cap.  If you overpay for an RB there will be less funds for other positions.  I would have rather the cap allocation went to DK Metcalf instead of an RB.

Secondly, from a longer term perspective it's a bad look for the FO to be perceived to have given in to the demands of a squeaky wheel (see Dallas Cowboys).  The way the FO negotiates has brought excellent deals with most of the good drafted players, making an exception will make future negotiations more difficult.

Third, many people here are not placing the value of Cook for what he has done, but rather for what he could be.  Cook's stats are at best, at the level of D Henry, $8M a year.  Upstream people are saying he should be in the tier of Jacobs, Kamara, or A Jones - yet Cook has never put up those kind of numbers.

He is the 2nd best player on our team.  In a year, he will cost more.  Pay him the 12.5.  You might say this is a bad precedent, but I don’t see that would be perceived as meeting his demands.  Also, all of the other deals were only for good players.  I would guess that you don’t see JC as borderline elite.  I do, especially for the offense we run without a burner WR.  Tack this on after this year.  In 3-5 years, he won’t be in the top 20% of RB pay.  Good down payment for a Lombardi.  JC is two furlongs ahead of what’s in the stable.

That's my point. With the cap going up 10+ million every year why bicker about 2.5 per.

Likewise, to those who say we don’t need him, I ask does he increase our chances of winning our first SB?  I see a million heads nodding, so why quibble over a few million.  It’s not our money anyway. 😂

$50M isnt going to get it done, but you can easily get under the a $12M "average" even at $60.

He has 1 yr left at $5M, add on 4/$60 with 1 void year, and all of a sudden it's 6/$65M ($10.8M/yr avg) and we have him locked up and affordable for what will likely be his entire career.

Yea we need the Porsch 🏎️

Just another thought.  He’s one of the few RBs that every time he touches the ball you are on the edge of your seat thinking that this could be big.

Oh he is WAAAY better than DeAndre Swift. And I disagree he isn't a difference maker without gaping holes. The whole point about Cook is he makes the most of holes that are not gaping because he has elite vision. Did he have some runs last year where the Bills line just blew guys off the ball and he exploded through untouched? Yep. But he had multiple runs in that 8 to 20 yard bracket where a back with less vision is stopped at the line, or for a gain of one.

While you are right he isn't a great pass blocker (nor is Ray Davis mind you, that's why Ty does it) if the Bills end up going from Cook to Davis that is a significant downgrade at the position. Normally I'd be like "meh, it's a downgrade at running back, who cares?" but the fact is until this offense gets better at generating explosive plays in the pass game outside of scramble drill those explosive runs are going to matter.

He will play the season. 100%. He won't be here for OTAs. He won't be here for mandatory minicamp at a guess. He might not show up day 1 for camp. But by the tail of end of camp Cook will be here, he will be practicing and he will be ready for the season.

I like your highlights of how special JC is.  He leaves a lot of guys grasping at air.  Since we don’t have a burner WR, he brings the quick that makes everyone better.  We don’t need 3 yards and a cloud of rubber dust.  I say he gets his 12.5 million bag before camp.

It seems to me it should be a 4 yr deal worth 60 million with a nice backlog figure and an out in 3 years. Everybody wins.

He has traits most rbs don't. If he could pass block it would be a no brainer. Plus the cap goes up every year so why bicker about 3 million aav.

I would like your deal at $50 million.  Pay him 12.5 per plus 1 million for 1000 yards, plus 1 million for 14 games, subtract 100K per fumble, an out in 3 years.  This is a deal that would make JC smile.  He’s a Porsch which costs more than a Camaro.

When you can't catch or run a full route tree there is; he needs to be schemed for success. We need to use his speed and elusiveness to make wins in coverage.

    We don't.

    New here?

New here?  I wish there was an attaboy emoji.  In the spectrum of dumb, dumber, dumbest, most dumbest, this one barely moves the needle at dumb.

he has not shown the deep accuracy since day 1, he has shown massive arm strength. Not sure how much more he can work on it, I think he is what he is and you play to his strengths. Yes you will let the occasional long ball fly to keep defenses on their heels some, but with Brady as our OC and Josh I do not think that will ever be a massive part of the Bills O game plan

Also what is the long ball % of the best long ball throwers in the NFL past and present?

I would guess Rodgers, Fouts, Marino and Mahomey, maybe Unitas.

And to be clear I am not hating on the draft. The most important part of the draft is the premium picks the first two days and I think Beane did as good a job with them as he has since 2018.

I am a bit more ciritical of his approach to the vet market in terms of FA and trades but I have no doubt the Bills will win the division and win a playoff game or two as long as Josh is healthy. My worry is that we will end up facing KC having the ball at the end, for a 3rd year in a row and not be able to get it done. And I am less persuaded that just upgrading the defense is the answer there. That isn't how the Bills - Chiefs games are. It won't matter whether we play a 32-29 game or a 20-17 game. The result will come down to the final 3 minutes and I think all of us would rather in that situation the ball be in Josh's hand than in Pat's. And then we gotta make the critical plays. Do we yet have the guys to do it?

I hope Jimbo is on the field those final 3 minutes.

    from PFF

    Pros
Very quick first step for a player of his size
Has a baseline for a variety of pass-rush moves
Has the length to play 3-4 DE
Hand usage is quick despite also very long length
Good natural power in his upper body

    Cons
Not a lot of weight in his lower half despite weighing 340 pounds — ankles/calves are skinny
High-waisted build makes it tougher for him to sit in his stance with leverage/power
Pops up quickly out of his stance

Pros:  King Henry won’t run over or through him, and it’s a long way around him.

I can understand where the confusion comes in with this.  I have been reading write ups that tell 2 different stories.  Some call him a zone corner.  Some call him a man corner.

What I will say is, based on my tape breakdowns anyway, is that he is a very good zone-match CB with solid man coverage skills.  He did play off a lot matching switch releases reading the QB and then driving on the ball with his great speed.  But, there were plenty of times where they lined him up on an island and he played press man or played off a bit but used great trail technique to stay in the WRs hip pocket.

If you are interested to see a little bit of everything he does, including the good and the bad, go watch his game against Texas and watch him go against Golden and Bond.  He wins a bunch, but loses as well in man coverage.  There are also good examples of him in zone coverage where he recognizes the play and drives on the ball to limit RAC or force an incompletion.  You will also see him miss a tackle or 2 that led to bigger plays, but I do think at least one of those was a busted coverage or just a bad call.  Regardless, you will see him play in all types of coverages.  There is one play that really stand out int this game that showcases who he is as a corner.  He's lined up on Bond who looks like he is running a go but Bond sticks his foot in the ground and turns it into a post.  But, after initially getting beat, Max catches up to Bond very quickly (Bond runs in the 4.3s by the way) and high points the ball in the endzone and knocks it away.  It is just a beautiful play.  Maybe the throw could have been a bit better, but that's the way it goes and Max made the play.

So, what is he?  I'd call him an excellent zone-match defender with solid man coverage skills that can improve with proper coaching and adding a bit more weight to hold up better against certain types of WRs.  Hope this helps!

Oh yea!  Helps a lot.  I’d like to see him at 197 and 4.3 in pads, and make Mahomey hold the pumpkin for another .5 seconds.

I can't properly articulate the way those of you who look over the tape with an educated eye. I am largely limited to SEC, which I watch a lot of as an UGA fan. Two players I like who could be day 3 selections: I mentioned the first awhile back, and the other day, someone posted that he has gotten some recent buzz. Anyway, I think Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins, UGA, DT who will play DE and can move inside, has some sneaky talent. Another player who I think does a lot of things pretty well is Florida WR Elijhah Badger.

Dr Who who knew you were a Dawgs fan?  Wish we could get Jalon or Mykel on the Bills D.  Do a switch with Carolina, give em this years and next years 2nd.  Go Bills and Dawgs!!
