That's the point. The Chiefs made a concerted effort to prioritize the defense the past two offseasons and immediately got an elite defense that elevated its level of play in the playoffs. The Bills have prioritized defense over offense every year that Allen has been here and not once have they gotten elite defensive play that lasted through the playoffs.

I do credit front office for getting some players during the year to help us win the division.  Did KC or any team lose the likes of Milano, Von and Tre??  Even with those losses, we were just a couple plays from beating KC, and would’ve won the next two.

You lost me at McMahon/Ditka….also, this idea that Josh isn’t assertive is not in any way factually correct. Just because he doesn’t lose his #### on his teammates on the sidelines doesn’t mean he isn’t assertive. That’s not his leadership style. Yelling at your teammates doesn’t make you a good leader, people have to get that thinking out of their heads

I’m not talking about yelling on sidelines.  Several of those SB QBs were not yellers, but they set the tone for their teams, along with their coaches.  Jim Kelly did some yelling on sidelines but his leadership was strongest during the week.  Again, the coach and QB have to set the standard.  It doesn’t happen on every team, but you don’t get the Lombardi with leaders who don’t engage.

Basketball, golf and tennis you can make the mental toughness argument to a degree, but in football it’s not a thing because the game requires so many other moving parts besides your QBs mentality to win games.

Football is the ultimate team sport.

Agree Julian but in football, if you got a mentally strong coach and QB, then you gotta chance (eg- Brady/Belichick, Montana/Walsh, Bradshaw/Knoll, Starr/Lombardi, McMahon/Ditka, Eli/Coughlin).  Most SB winners have this determination with the two main guys.  They weren’t trying to win most congeniality.  Eli Manning is maybe closest to Josh in temperament, but he had those steely eyes.  Now that Josh is becoming one of the older ones on the team, he has to bring some assertive leadership.

LA that’s what I’m saying too. Andy Reid made the likes of AJ Feeley and Kevin Kolb look like serviceable NFL QBs. The guy is a master of the QB position get a guy like Patrick and you see what he does even in his Philly days he pretty much dominated the NFC with Donovan Mcnabb.
Patrick would still be great wherever he played but give Andy Josh from the beginning does anyone believe Allen wouldn’t have at least one Lombardi now

If Josh had Kelce he would have a couple!

Trade Allen for Mahomes does what exactly? Qb is not the reason Buffalo hasn't won a Superbowl in the last 4 years.

Chiefs found a willing partner to trade to 10.  McDermott’s ties with Reid might have factored in.  Wouldn’t you help a guy who probably put in a good recommendation for you to get HC job?  Many other NFL coaches might have passed.  In hindsight, I do agree that you don’t make that trade to a powerhouse in your own conference … but did most coaches know what we now know about Mahomey??

Diggs and Allen definitely fell out and it happened in season in 2022. I was told that by two people independently of each other LAST offseason.

There was a point where the two were barely on speaking terms. I think they managed to piece some sort of relationship back together for the actual season in 2023. I wasn't told that but just looking on as a fan. But I don't think it was close to how tight they were before and I am not sure it ever will be.

Probably same thing happened in Minny.  Guy is basically a big hearted (loves the kids) and very emotional.  Sometimes big hearted people are temperamental.  The bromance part is that JA17 is closer to others and that doesn’t sit well with SD14.

You are TSW scholar of the day.

I know some blue helmets have been offered but the blue charging Buffalo needs a bold white outline to make it pop.  I like the idea of a blue helmet but have yet to see it done right.  Just spitballing.

Damn we have enough 6th and 7th round picks.. but whatever, it leaves room to take enough sleepers.

    28. Xavier Legette- WR Gamecocks.  A tough choice between him, Brian Thomas and Troy Franklin.  But he's big, explosive, fast, can jump and can make the contested catch.  He comes with some risk, the big one in that he only had one year of production. There may be legit reasons. He needed a QB, a revolving door of OC's, and didn't play WR until college.  Taking the risk that he blossoms into a DJ Metcalf or Mike Evans. We need a deep threat...and he is a deep threat.

    60. Sedrik Van Pran C- Goergia.  The successor to Morse, who we got lucky with this year, as he didn't have an injury for the first time in forever.  Van Pran is as solid as they come.  Im not waiting to take someone in the later rounds.

    99.  Malik Mustapha - S Wake Forest.  Another risky pick..but  he is fast, and plays fast.  Short at 5'9" but stout at 210. He's aggressive, but that is a 2 edged sword for him.  Here's hoping he can be coached up a bit. Strong as hell too.

128 Javon Solomon -Edge/olb Troy.  Small school, 250lb Edge rusher who runs a 4.5 40.  17 sacks last year and 45 pressures.

158 Jha'Quon Jackson - WR Tulane.  With all of these picks...I was planning on taking another WR.  Watching the Senior Bowl 1 on 1 reps I really liked what I saw.  It reminded me of watching reps 2 years ago...and watching Shakir win all of his 1 on 1's, or watching Tank Dell last year.  Although he wasn't leaving DB jock straps all over the field like Dell did last year... he was getting by people and getting open regularly.

161 Jordan Jefferson DT LSU.  Another athletic freak.  325 lbs. has a 34 inch vertical, supposedly ran a 4.5 40 and is as strong as a bull.  At minimum he can be a run stuffer...but he can also be more, much more.

197 Jay Stanley S Southern Miss.  Not the athletic freak that Mustapha is..but maybe more solid of a pass defender.  Worth a pick at this stage of the draft.

201 Nehmiah Pritchett CB Auburn. One thing that stands out with him...his QB rating when targeted.

    2019 85.4

    2020 48.6

    2021 83.4

    2022 72.0

    2023 54.8

    205. KT Leveston OT Kansas St. Big as a house, at 337, could probably stand to lose a few pounds.  BUt moves people in the run game and has gotten better in pass pro.

    245. Devin Leary QB Kentucky.  A near Mr. Irrelevant.  Time for Borkc Purdy II.

Hope van Pran is still there at 60.

He catches the ball, but at no time has anyone been scared of Diggs.  He’s not a game breaker in anyway, NEVER has been.  He’s been a PITA to cover in short areas, but nobody was worried about him “taking over” a game.   The entire defense has to be aware of where a guy like Hill is at all times because on mistake and it’s going to the house, even if you don’t make a mistake, he may just flat out burn you.  Diggs might get a first down, but that’s the end of the threat.

Don’t agree with the comparison.  Every team game plans to shut down Diggs.  Sometimes they do because no one else scares them.  Agree that Hill can take it to the house often, but our guy is easier to scheme double team, double zone, because no one else scares them.  Shakir was getting a lot of those targets because of the D shift to Diggs.  Must get a WR in the draft.

This is obviously false. What are we even doing here? Again, he had ZERO dropped interceptions on the season. If defenders can catch his passes, his teammates that are paid to catch his passes can do it too.

It's crazy how many excuses fans come up with to avoid admitting that his pass catchers simply weren't very good this year. Shakir was probably the best of them over the course of the entire season, and that represents a huge failure by Beane.

Well said Happy.  Sorry to hear about Carl Weathers.

I get that but you have to be careful what you wish for.  Cobbling together a whole brand new unit might be amazing, or it could be a disaster.  There's something to be said for continuity.  What's the answer?  I'm not sure....  I think it's a really tough call.

I like Jones as my #1 target on that list.

I'd be hesitant of Epenesa $$$, but hopefully he comes back without a stinker contract for the club.

My "Walk" players are Leonard Floyd, Jordan Phillips, Shaq Lawson, Linval Joseph, and Von Miller (find him a new home).

Good points.  Hope we keep Jones.  Continuity is more important for OL.  Do we want continuity with this DL group?  We can’t do much worse.

  12. Here’s a theory:  seems that many QBs know whom they will throw to pre-snap, and the receiver knows it too.  It’s a readiness thing.  Whereas, JA17, is making his decisions post-snap, and he is improvising as he looks at his options.  None of the receivers have an idea until the ball is coming at them.  Yes, they should all be ready and they should catch the ball if it hits their hands.  However, if I know I’m going to be the target from the get-go, then I’m ready.  Nice theory, huh?

Yea to trade up for the top 3 I think you'd have to have to have one left on the board at #8. Cos the Falcons are the first team I can genuinely imagine wanting to move back.

So dirty birds would take this years and next years first, and our extra 3rd.  I hope so.

Thats not enough to move 18 spots....I don't think its even close to enough.

Ok, do whatever it takes.  This and next years first, plus any player not named Allen or Milano.  I don’t want 4-5th best WR.  Speed, size, separation and don’t forget doggishness with get us a Lombardi.  We can’t stay at 28.

The theory is if you can't create separation against college athletes, it probably won't go very well for you against NFL athletes. Having said that, you can only learn so much from metrics. It's possible that Keon is creating separation but the passes allow DBs to recover and turn it into contested situations. And if you're simply awesome at winning those contested balls, the QB is probably more likely to give you more contested opportunities because he trusts you to go up and get it. Having said that, if you add up the numbers from the last two years, Keon's catch % on contested targets is pretty mediocre too, so at least based on the metrics, you're left with a guy that relies on contested opportunities to make an impact and also isn't particularly great at catching them.

Great explanation.  He looks like he plays with attitude like Moss and TO and Diggs.  If we don’t trade up to get one of those green guys, I think Keon is ready to play.

I put together a spreadsheet of many WR metrics, including stats on their contested ball abilities.https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/12pCgsJPa9X-jjNMOZ_exJTAEfxmZOeETzEm8SNkuXec/edit?usp=sharing

Contested catch % tends to not be very stable, so hard to tell really. For example, these guys were all 50% or higher on contested catches this season (bolded guys that are considered to have at least a remote chance of going in the 1st round):

    • Rome Odunze, Washington
    • Malik Washington, Virginia
    • Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint, Georgia
    • Luke McCaffrey, Rice
    • Tez Walker, North Carolina
    • Tory Horton, Colorado State
    • Javon Baker, Central Florida
    • Jermaine Burton, Alabama
    • Ainias Smith, Texas A&M
    • Bryson Nesbit, North Carolina
    • Ja'Lynn Polk, Washington
    • Brian Thomas Jr., LSU
    • Ricky Pearsall, Florida
    • Dominic Lovett, Georgia
    • Zakhari Franklin, Ole Miss (barely played this season, but was good at it the prior year)

But of those 14, only 3 of them even had 20+ contested targets; it's all small sample size stuff. Also of those 14, only 6 of them managed to catch 50% or higher the prior season:

    • Luke McCaffrey
    • Javon Baker
    • Jermaine Burton
    • Bryson Nesbit
    • Ja'Lynn Polk
    • Brian Thomas Jr.

There's also always debate about whether or not that's really something to be prioritized in the draft; it's great if they can make contested catches, but if they're being forced to make those catches in college, it's probably a sign that they'll struggle to get open in the pros. Of the 14 listed above, I would say Rosemy-Jacksaint and Luke McCaffrey should potentially be red flagged for having a high % of their targets that are contested. Tez Walker and Ja'Lynn Polk are borderline red flags IMO.

The consensus top 2 WRs in the class, Marvin Harrison Jr. and Malik Nabers, were both over 50% a year ago but were in the 40s this season. Keon Coleman was over 60% a year ago but down to 33% this year. Harrison and Coleman are potential red flags for relying too much on contested targets as well. Nobody relied on contested targets more this past season than Coleman, but he was okay in this regard the year before when he played for Michigan State. Harrison has been in the orange both of the last two years (red being bad, green good, yellow neutral).

Why is it bad to rely on contested targets (re- Keon)?
