Every year is different. McDermott's defense finished worse than Rex's last year in points per game and yards.

Let me ask you, how many games do you believe the Bills will be a favorite to win in their first 8 games and which teams are they?

I have no idea to be honest. It's April 23, haven't even gotten past the draft yet. Same players different coach. Let's see what happens in September.

  2.

I'll take these one by one

You can save the snark. I'm simply doing you the courtesy of allowing you to explain your position before I expose it for the inane sophistry it is.

Millions of fans are business people. The Pegulas' business was in no way related to professional sports franchise management. They are quite literally rich fans who bought a team and are now the owners.

You think someone from this board would be able to go straight to the GM position?

Not necessarily, but who's to say. The underlying philosophy that you're espousing is that amateurs should not second guess professionals, which is both flawed and boring. It's flawed for several reasons.

First, it presupposes that anyone with such competencies would necessarily be hired on in such a capacity. But the NFL is a very limited field - there are only 32 NFL teams in the world. Becuase of that the overwhelming majority of people would never have an opportunity to put their abilities to the test.

Second, it assumes that the professionals must know best. Around the turn of the 20th century Montgomery Ward was one of the biggest retailers in the country. They determined that opening department stores was a bad idea and stuck with the catalog format. A nobody named James Cash Penney thought they were wrong and started opening his own stores. His stores quickly overtook Montgomery Ward who eventually realized they were wrong and were late to the party. If Penney had followed the Riverboat Richie philosophy of deference to authority he would never have started his empire.

Penney was actually more qualified for his undertaking than were the Pegulas as he had actually worked in the industry, the Pegulas had not.

Third, it ignores the plain reality that some posters have been right a lot more often than the experts have.

Fourth, your point is boring. The fun of this is tossing around different ideas and discussing them. If we all just deferred to the FO by claiming they must be right because they're the experts nobody would come here because it would be the most boring site on the internet.

I don't think I could be a GM, but I think some of the posters in this thread would make owners than the Pegulas. Many of them clearly know a lot more about football.

You wouldn't be given the time of day form any team.

    Exactly

Right. I'm the one with the unrealistic views. Posters here who deal in emotional reaction would be better owners. Ok, nice to see how you mind works if nothing else.

  3.

I think if we draft Mahomes or Trubisky they would win the #2 spot on the roster. I would expect Mahomes or Trubisky to be inserted into the Bills lineup around week 9 or week 10 as the Bills could have a 1-7 record by then.

Ha HA, 1-7 all because of the QB? They didn't do that bad last year and they had a train Wrecks for a game day coach. I would think I need to fill more holes on the team before I draft a QB at that point. By the time the rest of the team catches up it will be time to draft another QB. If you're 1-7 you have bigger problem than a QB.

  4.

And there is a prospect whose profile reads like Derek Carr in this class. How many franchise QB's can Whaley pass on before he is fired?

There's plenty of QB threads on this board where we discuss why we like some of these prospects. I don't recall ever saying I want a QB to just get one. I have been on record as stating if Mahomes and Trubisky were gone at ten I would trade back.

That's what every post of your's reads like. Oh and if these two are that good and can't miss guys, they won't be there at 10 anyway. Look at the teams interested in the QB position prior to the Bills pick.

  5.

You don't want to draft a QB because of JP Losman? He was drafted 13 years ago. Time to move on. It sounds like you are so scarred by missing on draft picks from ten years ago that you don't want to draft a QB.

When you miss on a QB it doesn't mean you need to wait 20 years before you try again.

You don't get it. It's not about the name of the guy. It's what can happen when you take a guy out of desperation. It's a reminder that it could and does go either way. You want to pick one because of Wilson and Prescott? Same thing.Teams know more about these guys then you will ever know. But that's what happens when you think like a fan. Hey, if you're happy with the pick one just to pick one mentality then, more power to you. Buyer beware.

  6. How is it different?

Since you can't figure it out on your own................Owners were business people first. Anyone involved in the sport is a "fan". You think someone from this board would be able to go straight to the GM position? Know how to run an organization? Be my guest. Give it a shot. You wouldn't be given the time of day form any team.

  7. I would take Josh Dobbs in the 4th. My point still stands. If you believe a QB has franchise potential and you can draft them in the 1st you draft them. You don't wait and hope.

I know this sounds crazy but this is standard thinking in the NFL. The Bills are unique in that they think they can win with other teams backups at QB. It's a bizarre faith that had kept them out of the playoffs for almost 20 years.

Your point may be valid but that doesn't mean the Bills believe that any of these guys are franchise guys. They believed Losman had it and that EJ had it. They drafted them and the boards turned on them when these guys didn't make it. What one believes doesn't make it so. You can't take something that isn't there. You will again be disappointed. Again you want a QB just to take a QB. You're blinded by that obsession.

  8. If you believe a QB can be a franchise QB you don't wait till the 2nd or 3rd round.

It's a phrase. Don't take it out of context. Rex deserved to be fired.

It depends on how bad a team needs a player that is available when their pick comes up. If they decide another position would be strengthened more at the time then that will be the pick. Then if a QB is therein the next round then you have to decide what his potential benefit is to you. You are so obsessed with the QB position that you are blind to anything else. Like I said before, you can't just wish things to turn out the way you want. If I could I wouldn't be wasting it on what a football team needs, believe me!

  9. I'm ok with a top QB sitting this year since they are trying once again on Tyrod.

I agree a top 10 QB should start on a normal team but and that's a big BUT with Buffalo in this QB purgatory and staffs changing every few years with a million year playoff drought this team has to keep pushing for a franchise worthy QB. They have to keep trying if they don't this staff is no different then the last few banking it all on a mircle season out of another teams backup QB with no future to think of. Late round projects most likely turn into backups but Buffalos late round projects end up out of the league.

QB purgatory. Is that what the kids are calling it now days? You guys sound like you believe the BS about QBs being gone by pick 44. There is no gaurentee that the first QB taken is a "Franchise" guy. I seriously doubt even the Brown think highly enough of these guys as to take one at number one. Someone will be there in the second round and I think one or two might be there in the third. The draft always seems to be the opposite of what the pre draft expectations are. I'm only saying I would not take one at #10 this year.

Well, you seem to have adopted the Bills philosophy to drafting. I will have to disagree and say you need to run your team with longer term goals in mind then just getting through the year.

And the only way to do that is a QB at #10 this year? Why not the second or third round? If you're talking project anyway.

  10. I don't get why they have to start. The draft should not be for filling needs for the year but building a team that can win a Superbowl.

We're talking about the top players at their position in the entire country. You know how many players are draft eligible in a given year? The draft is to help teams that suck get better. Suck more and get a better shot at top talent. If I'm not going to do that then I might as well trade out of the first every year. QB is not the only position that can help this team this season.

  11. The Bills are a billion dollar franchise who employ a whole array of scouts and front office people. It's THEIR job to go over these QB's and determine who can play. If they pass on a franchise QB then they deserve to be fired and replaced by smarter scouts and coaches.

And if they take one and he flops, the same people who beat the drum for a QB say they screwed up and took the wrong guy. If a player at another position taken after them makes the Pro bowl his first year then they really screwed up in the eyes of the fans. Fans can be wrong. The team can't for the very reason you stated. Your number ten pick needs to start. That's my opinion.

  12. So if a guy can become a franchise QB but has to wait a year to start you would not take him?

Sounds like you could work for the Bills!

I know I can't wish a guy to be the answer just because I want him to be, like some fans seem to be doing. If a guy can become one? Any guy could become one. What are the odds on each of these guys becoming one? I don't think they are very good for any of them.

  13. It is what it is, this draft will determine what the future holds on this staff. Got my fingers crossed a QB is drafted early.

Late round projects are for teams that have a franchise QB all ready in place. If they want a franchise worthy QB they have to draft one of the top dogs. If they don't try they will never have one

There is no one going to start right out of the gate and take the job from Taylor. I'm sorry but I don't see it. That means the guy sits. I always believed that if you draft a QB in the top ten, he had better be able to start from day one. Not this year.

  14. Number 10 hype?

They have to take a QB early, a top talent not a late project to sit behind the other late project. Top QB can sit year one behind Tyrod make it or break it year so 2018 will have some kind of hope to it.

Tyrod got the last staff fired and a cordinator fired year one as the starter here. If they bank it all on Tyrod like the last staff they are dead man walking in 2018 if he is no better then he was with the last staff. In 2018 with nothing but late round projects that might not even become backups in this league this staff/GM will be in big trouble.

Tyron got the last staff fired? Are you serious with this or do you just like message board debates and don't really care about the topic? They reached for Losman and for EJ. You want to do it again. No one can decide on one of the rookies being the guy to go first or second for that matter but message board posters have it all figured out. Yes, talking about a QB at number 10 is just draft hype.

  15. They have a QB like it or not. I' m still not sure what he can really do base on the previous coaching staff. what kind of a ground and pound team can't convert a third down when they lead the league in rushing? Really pounded it ther in the red zone too, huh. What exactly was there identity then? Taylor played his whole time here so far like he was afraid to make a mistake and face the coaches. You ever see any of your franchise guys look like they were afraid of anything? Turn the guy loose and see what he can do. He, much like Whaley is walking on a thin line. Give them both all they need to succeed. If they fall off the wire then so be it. They don't need to buy into the QB at number ten hype.
