And how will they going to get so much better with the cap situation they are in! What would you have done to change all this without being deeper in the hole. They are getting somewhat younger on the o-line. Our 2nd or 3rd RB will be better and younger then Murray.  Our second WR, which should be a rookie will be just as good as Davis but also dont sleep on our rookie , or Shorter or Hollis.

They lost journeyman along the Dline and will add thru the draft and cheaper contracts in FA. The LB will be better with Milano hopefully healthy for the whole year. The D Backs will be the same and we just need to add a safety(one in FA and one in the draft)

I don't dislike Ty, but did we really need to prioritize a backup RB at this stage in FA, or a backup S (Cam Lewis),  or a backup LB/ST (Morrow), or a ST gunner/backup WR (Mack Hollins), or a backup QB (Trubisky) or a FB/backup TE (Morris), or a Punter?  We have massive holes in the starting lineup and need to improve our roster with significant talent to keep up/pass the Chiefs, Ravens, etc...  yet we're focused on backups. None of these guys are impact players and they can all just as easily be replaced with rookies or signings later closer to training camp.  Take their collective salaries (Hollins, $3M, Lewis $4m, Trubisky ..., etc.) and sign a real impact player, before they're all gone.

This is a ridiculous statement this early into FA and without seeing what we do in the draft.

Is there some FA RB you'd rather have that'll be around the same price as Johnson?  I can't think of any.

It's not about the RB per se. Its about prioritizing signing backups when we need starters in key areas.

Meanwhile the best FAs are quickly disappearing.

Gabe replacement comes at #28 or earlier with a trade up

He's basically a Gabe replacement, in terms of talent and measurables.  Put Mack on the Bills as a rookie with Allen and he probably does a lot better in production.

He can block all game and have 0 receptions on 0 targets.

get as many weapons as possible and let them fight to get on the field

    Exactly.

We need at least 4 quality WRs for depth and to plan for Stephs eventual demise.

We also run enough 4 WR sets or have sub packages to give guys a rest, etc...

It's no coincidence one of Allen's best passing seasons was with Steph, Beasley, Sanders and Davis. All brought different, complementary skills to attack the defense at multiple levels

  4. Bills need to sign a FA WR - Samuel, Ridley - to upgrade from Harty, then get a top WR with rd 1 pick.

Josh needs more weapons and Offense needs more speed to be able to attack defenses downfield

Depends on how long Reid continues to coach.

Agree, which is why I think Beane's strategy of keeping the window open as long as possible is valid. Reid will eventually retire and hopefully we'll still be competitive then.

No, we don't.  We have vets at WR.  Their names are Diggs and Shakir.  When was Kincaid "caught up" last season as a rookie starter at TE?  When was Torrence "caught up" as a rookie starter in the Oline?  Both are much harder spots for a rookie to succeed than as a deep-threat boundary WR.  Last season alone the NFL had 8 rookie WRs and 2 rookie TEs haul in 600 or more receiving yards.  Do you expect a veteran WR we can afford to do better than that?    People keep mentioning guys like Noah Brown (567 yards last season), Bourne (406 yards),  Mooney (414 yards) and Reynolds (608 yards).  Do you think any of those guys want to come here to be the 4? Is Beane going to pay 5-7 million to one of those guys as rookie failure insurance?  I doubt it when he has other areas to spend his limited cap dollars on like D Line and safety.  This is one of the those times where we are going to have to go young and see what happens.

The Bills are still $41.3 million over the new cap.  Even if they shave 70 million off the current cap figure, that doesn't leave much money to sign the draft picks (approx 10 million), rebuild the D Line, and get a starting safety, and a good backup QB, while also filling out the depth at RB, CB, O Line etc...

We need the WR depth anyways, even if the rookie shines. Sheffield and Davis are FAs. Harty will probably be cut (we overpaid him anyways)

We can get a decent vet WR for $3-5m for a 1 year contract. Last year Brown was $2.6m. Chark was $5m. Agholor was $3.25. Crowder was $1.3.

You can go multiple years and spread it out.

Cap won't be a problem for depth signings.

I don't understand how you and others think there is $6 million floating around to pay a Reynolds or Brown to be our 4th receiver.  He isn't going anywhere to be a 4 and it's a waste for Buffalo with so many other needs and limited cap space.  Diggs and Shakir are the 1 & 3.  We will be using a high pick at WR.  That player is the 2 replacing Davis.  The Bills only carry 5 WRs, thus after those 3 you are not investing $6 million or more in a 4th string wideout.  The Bills already have Shorter in development, plus Isabella and Hamler as futures/reserve contracts.   Is it possible that Beane finds a veteran for a $2 Million prove-it contract to come in and compete with Shorter, Hamler, and a later draft pick for a job?  Sure it's possible, but don't expect that player that player to be on Reynolds' level.  Spotrac projects Reynolds contract at $7 million and Brown at 5.6.    I will give you one name that could come cheap, has talent, is young, and produced decently before last season and that is Chase Claypool.

GMs, even good ones, go with inexperienced WR groups.  GB's top 4 WRs and top 2 TEs last year were all 1st and 2nd-year players and they out-performed the Bills' group.

We need a vet WR addition, to go along with the rookie 1st rounder.  Someone that can help with production as the rookie inevitably gets caught up.

I mean I'd love a guy like Ridley, in addition to a rookie, but more likely we get a guy like Noah Brown, Chark or Bourne.

  8. Should probably re-sign AJ and let him start on the right side, Groot on the left side and Von rotating in for passing downs with all $120M of his albatross contract.  Re-sign Shaq for the rotation.

I like re-signing Daquan and adding some cheaper FAs and Day 2 DT

Is Hyde gone for sure? The QB role of him an Poyer in the back of the D will be hard to replace immediately. We should draft a mid-round S to learn from him.

Our mate from Kansas City that posts here did make a good point the other day…

Outside the QB … is there another superstar on this Bills team ?

KC has a couple …including Chris Jones who I think is the most valuable defensive player in the game at present …

They got 2 great CBs ( better than anything we got) … superior interior OL ( that handled Oliver with ease… ) and Kelce on the decline but still a big game winner …

Bills have got a lot of “above average “ players … but not too many game winners outside JA..

Von was supposed to be our big D, swing for the fences superstar. He might bounce back next year a bit, but it's unlikely he even gets close to his contract value.

Diggs is a quickly disappearing superstar.

Other than that we're saddled with some aging, expensive non-superstars.

We need to trim the fat and restock with more players that are budding superstars (Cook, Kincaid, Milano).

But I'd also like us to find away, through the fat trimming, of getting another real superstar complement to Allen.

  10. :13 was a massive failure in end of the game planning. I don't know how you give up a FG in that scenario.  But it also felt like we were all cheated b/c of the OT rules.  That said, the Chiefs then lost to the Bengals who we likely wouldn't have beat either.

This year felt worse in some ways, b/c we had the game in hand and win it and we're likely SB-bound. The Bills played like the best team in the league over the 2nd half of the season and should have taken advantage of this opportunity.

  11. It's a homer statement, but after watching the Chiefs handle the Raven and seeing how the Ravens annihilated the 49ers a few weeks ago, I'm ready to anoint the Bills 2nd best team in the NFL.  Some better breaks and a few roster tweaks and we can get over the Chiefs playoff hump. I think this team is close.

  12. The WR room is bare with multiple guys hitting FA or likely cut. But I severely doubt McDermott will go Offense 2 years in a row. His comments about the defense not doing enough against KC, makes me think we'll probably see a DT or S in the 1st (DT room is also pretty bare).
