But there is the issue...they are not equal advantages.  That is the point people are making on college vs pros.

The OT rule is improved now, but college system is still the single only true equal opportunity structure.

Not really because the team that goes on offense second knows what it has to do in college.  There's no perfect system but the NFL playoff overtime system is the best I've seen so far in any version of football.

Yea that's mine as well. It does seem to be a pretty unpopular view around here but I'm with you. It looked painful for him to move let alone rush the passer. Take the L, save yourself that bit of pocket change and move on.

God that injury sucked.  We might have a Super Bowl right now if he doesn't take a wrong step in Detroit.

Our games in the regular season against the Chiefs mean absolutely nothing until we win in the playoffs

We lose the division if we don’t beat the Chiefs this season.  Of course they mean something.

That’s true, but if they fail to convert one time, the game’s over.  Why not just take the ball second?

Same goes for the Chiefs on their first possession.  The sudden death aspect on the third possession is too big of an advantage not to take the ball first imho.

You don't see a distinct advantage in having four plays to make a first down instead of just three?

There was nothing stopping the 49ers from treating every new set of downs as four down territory on the first drive of overtime.

  6. Third in AFC behind KC and Baltimore.  A little surprised we're above the Lions.  Here are the top 10 and the rest of the AFC East.  Best value?  I'm going Packers.

    San Francisco 49ers +600

    Kansas City Chiefs +850

    Baltimore Ravens +1000

    Buffalo Bills +1200

    Cincinnati Bengals +1500

    Detroit Lions +1700

    Miami Dolphins +2000

    Dallas Cowboys +2000

    Philadelphia Eagles +2200

    Green Bay Packers +2500

    New York Jets +3000

    New England Patriots +12500

Then receive is still maybe right call. If the Chiefs are going to score every possession, then try and beat them to the punch on the third possession. But you got to hope to either score a TD on your first possession or hold them to a FG on their first possession.

Correct.  If you're Shanahan and convinced Mahomes will score every time you receive the ball, score a TD, and go for two.  If the Chiefs match the eight points then you get the ball in a sudden death situation with a chance to win it without Mahomes getting the ball again.

But Mahomes would just go for 2. And you still risk losing never having touched it again and having given him an extra down to get in. Short of stopping the best player in football with 4 downs at his disposal every time the BEST case scenario actually is you bring the game down to a 2 point conversion attempt. That is a better than 50/50 proposition for above average offenses according to the data.

Not if the Chiefs tie it with a field goal.

College teams always choose to play defense first in OT. Not sure why it’s different in the NFL especially when your both guaranteed a possession. I know in the regular season if you score a TD first you win the game so maybe that’s what they thought. Complete coaching blunder on Shannahan.

If it goes field goal field goal then the next score wins.  Would you rather have the ball or not have the ball in that situation?  It's different than college.

The one reason - if it goes to a third possession, it's sudden death and if you score you win.

That's the only reason why I can think you'd do it.

This exactly.  You receive the ball every time.  I can't even believe this is a debate.

Those stories are interesting and I’m also shocked that they don’t have emergency egress lighting. They are a code requirement! By the way, it’s not done with a back up generator. Each room has a limited number of light fixtures with a small internal battery that kicks in to provide the code minimum foot-candles.

You'd think but their weren't any lights whatsoever that kicked on in the bathroom.  Thank god for cell phones.  I think the official explanation was the previous power outages that day that "overtaxed the backup system."

I was at the Bills/Chargers game when the weather balloon knocked the power out to the stadium (2008 I think). I just finished in the bathroom and my friend was in line a little bit back. I went to grab us some beer and the power went out while he was still I there. Needless to say, he said when it went out it was no holds barred in there.

That game was a surreal experience.  I was in line in the bathroom when the power was out and I don't remember a no holds bar. Just some snarky "Ralph is cheap' comment but really quiet other than that.  The only lights were from cell phones and all I remember thinking was how the hell does this place not have backup generators to provide at least some lighting.

I’ve been wrong before so it wouldn’t be the first time if i’m wrong here.

But the “X market is large” doesn’t work for Super Bowls. Because those markets tend to watch whether their team is in the game or not.

I’m going to guess 110M average (not peak).

Playoffs this year set all time records.  The Chiefs/Bills game was the most watched Divisional game of all time.  It will definitely be in the top 5 of all time.

Remember when Buffalo traded the pick that was used to draft Mahomes to Kansas City because McDermott couldn’t draft a QB until Beane got there?

The Bills weren’t outcoached last year in the playoffs.  They were punched in the face by a team that was bigger, faster, and stronger than they were.  I totally disagree with the notion that Beane has built a Super Bowl caliber roster over the past three seasons.  Given that this thread is about hurdling KC, when is the last time Beane drafted better than Veach?  The disparity in drafting over the last 3 years is enormous.

I didn’t say they were.  You asked why Beane doesn’t get more heat and I answered it with the handling of 13 Seconds and the horrible coaching in the Bengals game makes it far easier to blame McDermott than Beane.

I will never understand why McDermott catches so many of the arrows when Beane keeps hamstringing him with lesser players.  Three years ago, Beane drafted Epenesa and Basham, Veach drafted Bolton and Humphrey.  A year later, Buffalo needed a CB.  Beane let KC jump him to take McDuffie while Buffalo traded up for Elam.  Then Kansas City still drafted Karlaftis a few picks later.   Last year, Buffalo needed a pass catcher, so Beane traded up for Kincaid in the first round. Kansas City traded up for Rice in the second round.

You can’t expect McDermott to outcoach Andy Reid.  He’s a HOF coach.  If you’re going to beat him, you have to have equal or better talent, and Beane has been getting outmaneuvered year after year on draft day by their biggest obstacle.  Even this year, they’re going into the draft with only two picks in the first two days of the draft because Beane had to trade away a third round pick for a CB whose about to turn 30.

I just don’t see how this is a failing of coaching when the GM is getting schooled every April.

Because of 13 seconds and being thoroughly outcoached in every facet in the Bengals playoff game last year.  Both were massive failures on McDermott's part.  Our roster was good enough to beat KC this year too.  It's been good enough the last three years to beat them in the regular season.  It's easy to nitpick draft moves that didn't pan out but the fact is Beane has built a Super Bowl caliber roster the last three seasons.
