Can't say I agree.... McDs defense was pretty damn good throughout that SB season with the Panthers. Even in the SB they shut down the Broncos offense.... difference is they were stacked personnel wise.

The Panthers were huge favorites in that game. Denver had quite possibly the worst offense to ever play in a SB that year. That was when Manning could only throw the ball about 10 yards downfield and it took an hour to get there.

The Panthers looked like world beaters in those first 2 playoff games. I remember thinking those were the most dominating victories I’d ever seen.

    It didn’t end well.

I don’t remember their exact ranking, but I believe 2018 and 2019 our defense was top 10 in the nfl. In my opinion 2020 was a fluke year and we should see a much improved unit on the field in 2021.

we were not prepared for the loss of star in the middle and our line was just way to small to take care of business. Im not sure that people truly realized the value of Star Lotulelei. Is he a super star? No, but he did his job eating the double blocks which opened up our other guys to do their jobs efficiently. Hopefully in the future we will be better prepared with a serviceable back-up DT in case injury happens.

so I guess i do not have the same fear that you have. I am confident in our scheme as long as we have the correct personel to plug and play

I guess I would just feel a lot better if McD handed over those duties to a “proven” coordinator and scheme, and I hope it happens sooner than later or I fear we’ll all be having these same discussions next offseason.

The coaching staff should never have even left the drawing board as “doing work” and improving the scheme, personnel, plays, etc should be pretty high up there in the priority list lol. Of course it can be done and that’s why they are compensated so well for their jobs

    Get to work boys!

Are you talking about the offense, defense, or both?

Scheme was my initial worry when we hired McD. I followed all of those Panthers teams when I lived there. The scheme is “soft.” Not only is the scheme soft, but this is the softest version of his traditionally soft defenses. I know deep down that it’s never going to be good enough. Then we bring in another guy in Frazier that’s always been known to get absolutely torched in any game that mattered throughout his long career.

I just can’t shake this feeling that I have about this defense. I’m sure they’re really nice guys but this scheme worries the hell out of me. Even if we get the perfect personnel, it still just won’t be good enough unless we score 45 points in a SB.

I think McNeill is going to move up.  Second round talent.

    Rare commodity.

    Alim McNeill, DT, NC State?

I mentioned him earlier. I’m starting to see his name pop up often now. That’s got Beane written all over it. Maybe we should trade down and take the NC RB, then DT.

    Agree on the creates instability

Not at all questioning you, but wondering if you could explain in more detail why you see what he's doing as very very dangerous?

It’s very easy to pull something. I’m surprised they let him do it at all. His feet aren’t stable and the bar isn’t stable. There really isn’t any advantage doing that way either. A gymnast would probably yell at him.

Chris Simms, who is a pretty good Qb evaluator, and a pretty good NFL insider /trend and talent evaluator with stated aspirations to become a GM, believes Wilson is the most talented QB this year ( superstar talent) and feels like the Jets will “ run to the podium picking Wilson” if the Jags stick with Trevor.  That makes sense, and I can’t think of another strong reason to stay at 2 unless it is to be certain they get the QB they want as they are starting a new Era with a new coaching staff who has zero ties to Darnold.  Btw, who knows what Darnold is after three years as he has more turnovers than tds.  It’s also being reported that SF didnt even try talking to the Jets as apparently it’s well known their intentions are to draft a QB. The Jets are sticking for the one position, QB, that changes a franchises future and the one position you most likely need to be in the top 5 ( we got very lucky at 7 as Allen was under valued and subsequently has over achieved) to land that type of talent in today’s draft.

If the Jets are looking for a different position, like tackle etc, yet turned down multiple future first round picks to just drop to 12, where they coukd still get an extremely good line prospect, it would be pretty surprising. Only the QB positional talent changes, or drops off so quickly to warrant a team sticking or not moving a few spots despite being getting fairly compensated to move.   Time will tell, but the Jets sticking at 2 really seems like strong circumstantial evidence they are going QB  with their pick and Wilson seems like the obvious choice.

I don’t see any reports of the Jets turning anything down. It said that SF didn’t speak to the Jets. There could be many reasons for that. The Jets could already have a deal in place with another team that’s waiting on the Jags to announce who they’re taking. We really don’t know yet. There’s a lot of “reaching” with this rumors.

Let me just say, I agree with you to a degree. If we were a rebuilding team that went 3-13 instead of 13-3 then I would definitely say RB in round 1 is really stupid. Like the Giants did with Barkley which clearly didn't make sense when they needed a QB. But our offense literally needs a game breaking RB and a good TE from being fully dominant. It's almost there already.

We have drafted RBs in the 3rd round each of the last two years and how has that worked out? Zach Moss, I'm not necessarily giving up hope that he can be a really good player yet but I'm pretty sure we know what we have in Singletary at this point. And neither guy is really a guy that can change a game or has game breaking speed.

To me, there is a clear difference between the RBs you draft in Round 1 as opposed to after. Tomlinson, AP, Elliot, McCaffery, Barkley, Gurley, Barry Sanders, Emmitt, Marshall Faulk. Those guys are or were difference makers for their teams. You can get guys in other rounds like Gore, Kamara, Aaron Jones, LeSean McCoy, Terrell Davis, Thurman and maybe even luck out on an undrafted guy like Fred Jackson or James Robinson and some others but I feel like the odds of that are a little slimmer. We are in our SB window. There's no point in not taking a difference maker at position of need that can make us even more dynamic because "RBs are a dime a dozen" or a "non sensical 1st round pick". I personally would like a pass rusher with the first pick but have no issue at all with Etienne or Harris at 30 if either player is there. I just don't see the point of drafting another 3rd Round RB that's basically the same as what we already have

Yup. We are a team that can take that “luxury” pick RB and 30 is exactly where you want to do it. People get too caught up pretending that we’re Hoodie and will never value the position or insists that we’re always going to trade down. It’s pretty tiresome to be honest.

The way we have addressed the position hasn’t worked and it needs to be fixed.

I still think the one player we could trade up for is Owusu-Koramoah if he falls. With Milano re-signing it might seem redundant but he could finally be the big nickel that McDermott has wanted since he got here. He could potentially be what we need to contain Travis Kelce, not to mention Jonnu Smith and Hunter Henry and Mike Gesicki in our own division.

I’m seeing the DT from NC being mocked to us in the 2nd. That would be very Beane-like.

Completely agree, if a RB is sitting there at 30 and they love him then I can get behind that, but definetely dont trade up for one.  I think the only position I could get behind trading up for is edge rusher, but its a weaker class.  Can probably just sit tight at 30 unless someone they expected gone in the teens is sitting there in the mid 20s.

What if Zaven Collins made it to 24? You don’t think they go get him? I do.

It would also be wise to trade below 18th If possible and not pull the trigger on the trade until the last miniute IMO.

Harris may go lower then Beane wants to go...

Oh, so the Steelers are 24. This is starting to make a little sense now. So if we actually like Harris, I would probably try to trade up right in front of the Jets at 22 if he is still on the board at 20. We probably don’t have the ammo to get in front of Miami.

Harris probably won't make it past the Dolphins and Steelers. As much as I want to see Harris in a Bills uni, I don't want to see Najee Harris in a Dophins uni. If Miami pulls off both Pitts and Harris it spells double the trouble for Buffalo IMO.

Yeah, if we want Harris, we have to trade in front of the Steelers. All signs point to them fixing their running game ASAP.

I don't know about Atlanta but I think it would make a ton of sense for them to take one or a lot of sense to trade down if not. Seems like it's an open secret that the Jets have already decided to take Zach Wilson.

I live 10 minutes from MetLife so I’m surrounded by disgusting heathens who call themselves Jets fans. None of them think they’re taking Zach Wilson. I think people are reading too much into that report yesterday. We don’t know if SF had enough to get to 2. We don’t know if the Jets already have a deal with someone else to trade that pick. Too many unknowns.

Yeah, ATL could really clean house if they trade down but I’m not convinced anyone really wants to trade up for Fields. I could see Carolina passing on him too. If that happens, he could slip pretty far.....like embarrassingly far.

They could easily go DT or OG with a strong bit on CB

If Zaven Collins falls definite possibility

I think trading up in the first round is out

After the signing of Brieda I think it became a lot less likely because Maas is a hammer and breida is the speed

We are not talking about T.J. Yeldon when it comes to Brita he is better than that

Apparently there isn’t a DT worth taking at 30. That’s what others here have said. My gut tells me that we’ll have to move up at least 3 or 4 spots because I don’t see the 4 QB’s going first. I could see ATL and Carolina passing in Fields. That could end up screwing us up a bit.
