Who was the GM the day we traded for Jerry Hughes?
Nix as I recall. Which has nothing to do with what I was discussing.
-
EJ was awful. Now that you know Whaley's character. Do you truly believe he would defend the EJ pick and fight tooth and nail for him? Or do you think Whaley would say EJ was Buddy's pick and throw him under the bus. Answer this question honestly with the action you have seen from Whaley. Nix was Whaley's training wheels for that draft, it happens in the corporate world all the time it's called training while on the job. Why is that so hard to see?
I don't know Whaley's character nor do you. As I said blame him for sticking with EJ too long. That's valid. But Nix was GM when he was drafted. That's only valid but factual.
-
No wonder the Pegulas find it so easy to swindle this fanbase.
Who was the GM the day of the2013 draft? Fact, not conjecture.
-
Look it up. Buddy knew he was handing the reigns down to Whaley months prior to the draft. Nix was the GM in title but he was there to help Whaley out in his 1st draft, Whaley wasn't in the back seat.
You refuse to deal in fact. Nix was GM in 2013at the time of the draft. Nix also said before he retired he wanted to make sure he brought ina QB. Blame Whaley for staying with him too long , but he wasn't GM that draft.
I have fact, you have conspiracy theory.
-
so Whaley was there for the free food and drink? Whaley loved Nix so much that he made it a point to fight for EJ for 4 years to defend Nix's honor. Please stop it. Whaley picked EJ and fought for his pick. Even if I were to agree with you Whaley didn't retain any of those guys, guess he wasn't the GM when their contracts expired.
Look it up. Buddy Nix was GM at the time. Doesn't mean Whaley wasn't involved. But people should be factually accurate.
-
Lets look at Whaley's track record since everything is speculation
2013 Draft
EJ Manuel- awful player also not on the team anymore 4 years after being drafted
Robert Woods-not on the team anymore
Kiko Alonso-not on the team anymore
Marquise Goodwin-not on the team anymore
Duke Williams- awful player not on the team anymore
Jonathan Meeks-bad player
Dustin Hopkins- not on the team anymore
Chris Gragg- average player
so if the 2013 draft we walked away with Gragg's and Meeks because thats all thats left
2014
Sammy Watkins- good player but didn't need to trade away the farm in a strong WR class
Cyrus Kouandjio- wasnt able to play till last year a team in a drought doesnt need projects in round 2
Preston Brown- slow and doesnt do have any above average skill set
Ross Cockrell-not on team
Cyril Richardson-not on team
Randell Johnson-not on team
Seantrel Henderson- he's sick and that can't be blamed on anyone, get well young man
So out of this draft we got a #1 WR and a slow linebacker that cant cover or stop the run, none of the other players contribute much on Sundays
2015
Ron Darby- wasn't good last year I'm hoping it was Rex's system since he was good as a rookie
John Miller-average to above average
Karlos Williams- not on the team
Tony Steward- not on the team
Nick O'leary- average player/ nice pick so deep into the draft
Dezmin Lewis- Training Camp Warrior
We got 2 starters and 1 backup out of this class
2016 Draft Class
Shaq Lawson- drafted an injured player on a team that needs their 1st round picks
Reggie Ragland- injured while playing unavoidable
Adolphus Washington- ran out of gas but you cant judge a guy off of 1 season
Cardale Jones- major project that looked awful when he played/ wait and see
Jonathan Williams-fumble machine/ we have plenty of RBs so its not an issue
Kolby Listenbee-?
Kevon Seymour- gotta wait in see here
so out of this draft class we got 1 starter last year, could be 3 or 4 this season depending on how they play and who we draft this season.
When I look this over it doesn't look like a good job is being done drafting. Out of those 29 guys drafted SIX have contributed on the field for an entire season as a starter.
Nix was GM for the 2013 draft
-
If we were actually on the verge of heading into the season there might be concern. It's March. Relax.

Phrases that are way overused:
Franchise QB
Shut down corner
Sideline to sideline LB

OK. Lets ignore the gossip "or reporting" of Whaley clashing with 3 separate coaching staffs, the battle over whose responsible for EJ Manuel, the horrendous public speaking and questionable cap management and draft strategy.
Doug Whaley has been Assistant GM and Director of Pro Player Personnel from 2010 to 2012 and GM from 2013 to current. In his position of great power as either the 2nd most powerful figure in the front to office to currently the most powerful the Bills have a record of 46-66 with 0 playoff appearances.
Strictly speaking as GM, the Bills have a record of 30-34 and 0 playoff appearances despite Whaley going for it, by going to the cap and making several trade ups and mortgaging the future.
Sorry, but that simply isn't good enough, especially when he doesn't have to operate under the budget and meddling constraints of Ralph C Wilson.
Which is why I said earlier he is on the hot seat
-
Hey old time. What's past is past. I am one who believes people should be judged in what they actually do and not what someone thinks they do.
-
Obviously Whaley was making the picks. Buddy Nix would never draft an undersized linebacker from Oregon.
Buddy Nix was GM for the 2013 draft. Buddy Nix said he was going to make sure a QB was in place before he left and took EJ (which of course did not work out).

I can't speak for others.
I'm trained to get the facts directly by talking to people whom I trust and not merely rushing out and citing others, who are using unnamed sources.
This doesn't mean I ignore the reports or doubt them. It's my job to get to the truth, and that's what I do.
If all I did was quote Schefter, Rappaport or LaCanfora then what would be the purpose of me covering the Bills?
jw
If you say so.
I wasn't angry at Lynn, so you're wrong in blaming all media.
jw
Thanks for the reply. I wish more reporters would dig for facts as you do.
-
What?
Treat Anthony?
We felt bad Lynn was forced into a position of answering questions that needed to be asked but couldn't directly answer because 1) he was prepping for a game. 2) the decisions were made above his head. 3) he was in the running for the job.
Silly to blame the media for the front-office's own failures.
jw
John:
I think the Lynn press conference was a disaster. Whaley's not so much; I just don't think it's something Whaley is good at for whatever reason. But while I have you here, I wonder if you could comment on the propensity of some in your profession to make a living off simply reporting rumors etc. like we see with this LaCanfora article. Is this typical nowadays of what we are to expect of journalism? I like your comments in this thread because you tell us you don't report unless you have fact. Why is it you do that but others apparently do not?

The other 10% were Doug Whaley...
When those two Nobel winners did speak, did anyone ask "how did these guys ever win a Nobel prize??", or is there any story anywhere that ,after Ozzie has spoken, where those he was speaking to were prompted by his performance in the speech to ask him "so what is it that you actually do"?
No, of course not. So, no, a GM does not have to be "brilliant public speaker"--that doesn't even need to be stated. But he does have to give the public the perception that he is in control of whatever it is he does. He was not some "company man" saying what the boss wants him to say (Pegula was off camera cringing no doubt--I'm sure Kim was).
He is not a bright guy. Bring in a brighter guy.
Whaley claims that he didn't even suspect where Rex stood with Pegula minutes before Pegula sacked him. So...
It was essentially the end of the season. When do most GMs get fired?
The question is not whether he is a bright guy or not. The question is whether he is good at his job as a GM, and the "brightness" that is needed for that position. And to me being able to speak in public is not a prerequisite for that. Judging him on what a GM does I would say he has done some good things and some bad. He is on the hot seat to get this team into the playoffs, as it should be. But at some point we have to have some continuity in the coaching and GM staffs so that as a team they can decide on a philosophy and commit to it so you can target the right kinds of guys to draft, get in FA, etc.
-
I remember when Brandon Pettigrew was that guy.... and when Eric Ebron was that guy... and when Dustin Keller was that guy
Good point.
-
Whaley strikes me as the old fashioned company man who keeps his head down, does his job, and doesn't question upper management. The kind that worked for 40 years with the company and then got his gold watch.. His boss makes a decision to fire the HC, he doesn't question that. He accepts it and goes on with his job. That was my read on the press conference - I really don't think he knew beforehand and when it happened he just moved on.
-
Anyone my age who lived through the 70's will tell you the Fish are the most hated team. My daughter once refused to date a guy just because he was a Fish fan. A very proud moment for me.

Change is inevitable, I mean to be fair I don't think anyone considered losing Colin Cowherd and Skip Bayless losing big time talent to the competiton. Sure, espn tried to retain them, but they are shock jocks who are blatant blowhards to get views/attention.
Furthermore, espn was the only real entity to poach from. Why aren't we hearing about FS1 having their own big names they have essentially helped build?
ESPN has been the cornerstone of the sports networking for how long? Every big dog in the yard will eventually have someone who tries to take their title.
Yet, ESPN, as of now still owns the market.
ESPN >>>>> FS1. The reason ESPN is laying people off is complex, but some of it has to do with folks getting info from social media vs. TV and some of it has to do with the parent company (Disney) losing money on other corporate areas so they are tightening the belt in all areas.

Howard. A guy that has all the skills and ability to be an All Pro for years to come. That's what you want in a #10 pick. And would allow Dennison to run a really effective 2 TE offense along with Clay.
-
Bills PR dept. has been Bush League and needs a major upgrade
Well, they just changed the head of the PR department so that should qualify as an upgrade.
-
I think this Whaley not getting along with coaches stuff gets entirely overblown. Looking back it seems that Marrone was a control freak who wanted say so on everything (should be interesting to see him under Coughlin). Then with Ryan other than the Cassel thing Whaley went out and got pretty much anyone Ryan wanted. And it looks like the same thing is going on with McDermott. That is actually working with your coach, not against him.
Whaley is not a gifted public speaker, and one can argue whether or not that's a pre-requisite for being a good GM. I posted back in my BBMB days that I have met two different Nobel prize winners during my career, both brilliant, and both lousy public speakers. Whaley does not have to be a brilliant public speaker to be an effective GM. I don't know the last time I heard from or saw an interview with Ozzie in Baltimore yet he's a great GM. Making McDermott the voice in public makes sense if it's a skill set he has that the GM doesn't.
Whaley certainly is on thin ice. But that should properly be judged by the team's performance on the field and not his performance in a press conference.
Oh, and this all comes back to speculation by LaCanfora, and this is his trade in stock now. He seemingly just randomly throws crap against a wall, because he doesn't have to have any accountability apparently to his management if he's wrong. Must be nice to have a job where you can just throw around and/or make up rumors and get paid for it. Wonder where I can apply.
-
The Bills want McD to be the voice and figurehead for the team. Fine by me. Probably fine by Whaley since it's not his favorite thing to do. And anyone placing any credence in anything LaCanfora throws out should step back. LaCanfora and his ilk can say anything they want, because they are never held accountable for being wrong.
-
My preference would be to trade down if they can find a partner. They can get a starting CB later than #10. But if they can't find a partner, taking Howard is fine by me. The kid could be an All World type guy for years to come.
-
Can't fault a guy for trying to maximize his salary. Can't blame the Bills for setting what they think is fair market value. Would like to see him stay, and just because he's not an All World player doesn't mean he wouldn't have value to the team.
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine Jerry

I could care less what the media said about it. Nix gets credit for that trade. And blame if you'd like for the EJ pick.
