Bill belichick's defensive game plan shut down the bills kgun in the Bills Giants SB ... It's literally in the HoF

he's been a defensive guru for 30 plus years and has won super bowls with great defensive performances

His ability to adapt his scheme across multiple eras ... Running multiple fronts and confusing top quarterbacks for 30 years is a tremendous legacy

And he just took the Patriots to the playoffs with a terrible rag arm quarterback...

He just can't stop Josh Allen : )

And yes he isn't the greatest GM.. but his defensive coaching abilities are unquestioned

Agreed. I'd add that Brady doesn't win all of those superbowls without belichick's defense backing him up.

(Not saying Brady wouldn't have won any)

The Patriots WR room is like a list of WR3s from 2018. I agree that Bill is a first ballot HOFer and one of the greatest minds in NFL history. I just don't think even that can win with Cole Strange, Jakobi Myers, and 58 year old James White.

James White turns 59 in August.

So by drafting a corner in round one, that means he will be a pro bowler?  That logic isn’t sound. Once the top dogs are gone, the rest have flaws. Don’t force the pick just cause you “need” one. That’s how you end up making a bad pick.

That is a completely dishonest interpretation of what I wrote. I was trying to be civil in this discussion with you. I didn't say that at all if you read my statement.

Corner 2 can also be found later.

I hear what you're saying, but the NFL is littered with probowl RBs who were drafted after round 1. CBs? Not really. If you want a probowl caliber CB, they come primarily in round 1. Of course, there are exceptions to every rule, but the chances of a really good CB after round 1 go way down. That's not the case with RB.

It would be awesome to have a dynamic RB on this team. I just don't want, or think we have, to spend a round 1 pick to get one.

I'd 100% bay AJ Brown top end receiver money. I think Deebo is a more difficult question. I think he is worth that money to the 49ers.... but to someone else? I don't see it. Not sure he is a stud in every offense.

Interesting take. Deebo is the reason SF was one game away from the superbowl. Special player in THAT offense.

Like you say, I don't see every OC being able to maximize his talents.

Back in 2018, Cover 1 put out a piece identifying how McDermott uses his coaching connections while researching draft picks. Essentially, McDermott used his connection with then LSU DC Dave Aranda to get the inside scoop on Tre White. Article here:

    https://www.cover1.net/could-hc-sean-mcdermotts-inner-circle-have-an-effect-on-the-draft/

I wanted to follow up on that article a bit to see if those connections still held true several year later. Here is what I found:

    2018:

In 2018, we drafted Tremaine Edmunds and Harrison Phillips.

At VT, Tremaine was coached by Justin Fuente who was close friends with then- Bills DL coach Bill Teerlink who later went and took the same position at VT to work with Fuente.

Harrison Phillips didn’t seem to have much connection other than opposing coaches that played against him at USC being connected to Frazier.

    2019

In 2019, we drafted Ed Oliver which seems to be the one time where there was no noticeable connection between our first defensive pick and coaching staff. The closest connection I found was then-Houston DC Mark D’Onofrio was Temple’s DC while McD was with the Eagles and Temple used to scrimmage at the Eagle’s stadium.

    2020

In 2020, we drafted AJ Epenesa in the second round. McDermott has said that he likes players from Iowa: “I always love guys from Iowa because of the culture they come from.” Kirk Ferentz also used to frequent Eskimo’s gym that McDermott worked out in growing up as he looked for recruits (tho this may be stretching it) per the buff news: https://buffalonews.com/sports/bills/theres-no-keeping-him-down-how-sean-mcdermott-ascended-to-coach-of-the-bills/article_a7b1e43d-5094-569e-9c4a-b2e8c196a2bf.amp.html

Still in 2020, Dane Jackson in the 7th is also tied to McDermotts coaching tree as Pitt HC Narduzzi  was an assistant with the Eagles.

    https://www.wgrz.com/amp/article/sports/nfl/bills/nfl-draft-one-on-one-julianne-with-pitt-panthers-coach-pat-narduzzi-on-why-damar-hamlin-will-make-an-impact-with-the-bills-this-season/71-1ba47ec4-2aaa-414d-840e-5e9451af3a66

    2021

In 2021, leaning on coaching connections revved up, probably due to the incomplete college season.

In Round 1, we drafted Greg Rousseau who was coached at Miami by McD close friend Manny Diaz.

In round 2, we drafted Boogie Basham who was coached by by Dave Clawson who has know McD since McD was in college:

    https://www.audacy.com/wgr550/sports/bills/wake-forest-head-coach-explains-what-separates-sean-mcdermott-from-other-nfl-coaches

Finally in round 6, we went back to the Pitt/Narduzzi well with Damar Hamlin.

    ****

That brings us to the 2022 draft and a few things stand out.

    1. Aside from 2018 where we still used a second first rounder on Tremaine Edmunds. The Bills have drafted a defensive player with our first pick every year since McDermott arrived (maybe McDermott gets final say on the early round picks?)

    2. In the draft years with more ambiguity - 2017 being McDs first year and with a GM that would soon be fired, and 2021 after the Covid messed up college season - we seemed to lean the hardest on the coaches connections

    3. Though their were personal connections, none of the picks would be considered a reach for where they were selected. And the clear coaching connections were mostly just for the defensive prospects.

    4. As the rounds get later, their seems to be fewer clear connections between our coaching staff and the players college coaching staff

So, does that give us any insight on who the Bills may draft?

    Some Guesses:

    Daxton Hill - CB/S - Michigan

Bob Shoop was Michigan’s Safeties coach for one season in 2020. That would have given him a chance to coach Daxton where the Safety was a full time starter. Per Cover 1’s article, Shoop was identified as an inner circle member along with Aranda and Diaz, where they all studied and discussed defensive strategy together.

Roger McCreary - CB - Auburn

Though regarded often as a second round pick, their could be 4 or 5 CBs off the board by the time we pick. McCreary doesn’t fit the McD body type with his sub-29 inch arms but he does have a connection to our staff. His defensive coordinator Derek Mason was a defensive assistant in Minnesota while Leslie Frazier was the DC. Aside from the short arms, McCreary has great skill and production.

Kenneth Walker - RB - Michigan State

Their is not a ton of matches between talent and familiarity with what we expect to be available at 25. However on offense, McD has also shown a willingness to lean on his coordinators connections. In 2017, Zay Jones was selected because the Bills new WR coach was Zay’s college receivers coach. Last year, former OL coach Bobby Johnson was a former Miami Redhawk and had seemed to have some input on Tommy Doyle being selected.

This year may be Aaron Kromers turn. The coach was OC for the Bears at the same time Mel Tucker - current Michigan State HC- was DC for the Bears. And again, McDermotts friend Dave Clausen was Walker’s head coach at Wake for two years. Last year, Travis Etienne went 25 and it’s quite possible that Ken Walker is a target at that spot this year.

    Jalen Pitre - Safety- Baylor

McDermott may go back to the Dave Aranda well - now HC of Baylor. Pitre is a playmaker at Safety who may be a good future replacement. He was put into the STAR role in Baylor where he played all over the field so you know Aranda trusted him. Likely a second rounder.

    Damarri Mathis CB/S - PITT

Pitt’s defense is very similar to ours and we may be willing to bring in another late round DB from McD’s buddy Narduzzi’s system.

Only two weeks to go until we find out Thanks to all those who read.

My dog got spade this morning and is not taking the discomfort well, so this self-imposed project has helped me stay up with her to make sure she doesn’t get the cone off and get after her stitches lol.

I'm impressed by the work, and thought, that went into this.

  7. I think the problem is where we're picking. I don't see the Bills being able to get Booth or McDuffie at 25. Likely, they'll need to go with guys who have potential and need to get coached up. Luckily for us, the Bills have an excellent coaching staff.

CB is our biggest need. But I'd be satisfied if we came away with any 2 of:

    Alontae Taylor

    Tariq Woolen

    Coby Bryant

    Josh Williams

All guys with crazy potential in my opinion.

Honestly, I don't know what the right answer for any of this is.

I don't necessarily like the idea of people being "forced" into positions...but on the other side I don't see how people think absolutely nothing is wrong and there isn't any kind of bias whatsoever when we literally have what, 2 black head coaches in the entire league?

This is how I feel. I can't understand how some people will add an eye roll or thumbs down emoji at the mention of racism or race based biases. NFL owners and GMs aren't walking around saying the n-word. They would all, probably, tell you that they aren't racist (just like many of the eye rollers here). That doesn't mean they don't harbor subconscious racial biases. Numerous sociology studies have shown this is a factor in modern workplaces.

But what is the solution? You can't mandate racism away. You have to educate people about racism and its history. But you can't educate the unwilling.

We need to get more weapons for Josh he’s the franchise

    Diggs, Davis, Knox, Howard, Crowder.

I'd love a speedy receiver to add to this mix. But let's not act like the cupboard is bare like it is at CB. We have a need at receiver, but a huge gaping hole in the secondary.

Allen has some weapons. We'll put up a lot of points. But we have to be able to stop people.

Bills are a zone based team they can easily get away with drafting a corner in round 2 or 3 and not skip a beat. Heck Levi Wallace was undrafted. It’s WR or Breece Hall in round 1 for me.

Zone "based", yes. But we still have to run plenty of press and off-man. We cannot start the season with Cam and Dane as our starters. And we need better horses to compete with a stacked AFC in the playoffs.

The level of WRs we have to play is insane. Expecting to be able to scheme for a lack of athleticism in the secondary is not a superbowl winning strategy. We need excellent CBs.

Just saw that the Bills CB and ST coaches were at Penn State’s pro day. The only thing that makes sense there is Tariq Castro-Fields. He’s interesting and would profile to what I’ve been saying for a while now. That McD can coach anyone into a very good DB. That’s why I don’t see a first round corner. They have been very successful with mid round and undrafted corners.

Castro-Fields ran a 4.38 at the combine and is 6’1” with nearly 31” arms. He would have the goods to be an immediate upgrade without using a first round pick. I think this is something to watch…

Love the measurables. McDermott and staff are excellent at developing DBs.

    Not Levi

I don't know. Levi was undrafted with very limited physical traits. I'd say they did a great job developing him into a serviceable DB. And this is coming from me who really wanted an upgrade at Levi's spot on the depth chart.

I don't think it's a knee jerk reaction (and I'm sure McBeane doesn't as well).    Teams have to be build for the long haul, not just this season.   The glaring hole at CB is a big weakness, Tyreek Hill or no Tyreek Hill.     The draft is deep in WRs that can help beyond the first round (i.e., Gabe Davis in the 4th round).

The Bills averaged 36 ppg against the Fins over the past two years.    No way the Fins average 37+ against the Bills, even with Hill.

Plus, against Miami, the Bills don't have to "cover" Hill as much as they have to force Tua to throw outside the hashmarks. Tua doesn't have the arm.

What a fun highlight video to watch. I haven't watched him before. Great balance! Catches the ball with his hands. Makes things happen after the catch (yac) rather than just catching long passes in the open field. Has a funny short stride.

Very interesting! Thank you for posting!

  14. Not a popular opinion here, but I liked Whaley. Ialways felt that he was in a terrible position here. Meddling owner, had Nix as a weird co-GM/boss/mentor hybrid. Russ Brandon 'nuff said. Then he had Rex shoved down his throat.

I'm not saying he would've been great. But he certainly wasn't given a real shot.

Really confused by BB and the Pats offseason plan. It was expected they were going to be players again in FA but as of right now their roster is markedly worse on paper than last year.

And their local media is equally perplexed by the offensive line especially after news broke with Miller landing with the Bills.

To their credit though they have been great at developing the oline position with late round draft picks and UDFA types and perhaps plan on doing that again even though it's a risky move with a developing young player like Jones entering a crucial 2nd season.

Especially risky since they no longer have Dante Scarnecchia, one of the greatest o-line coaches of all time.

I’m never sure about FA valuations but there are some good options in the draft. I like the guy from UT-SA. 6’3” and ran a 4.26 40. Let McD coach him up.
