  1. The Colts came out hungry and played with a lot of intensity. They have a great o-line, and a really good front 7 on D. This was always going to be a tough game. The AFC playoffs are pretty stacked with talented teams.

Still, I feel like Daboll made a lot questionable calls. I'd like to see more camera angles to see if the Colts were doing something to stop our passing attack. But the designed runs with Josh Allen running parallel to the LOS just didn't make sense. This is a passing team, but we had a 3 and out early where we ran the ball on all 3 downs. Our running game has been questionable all season. And the Colts have a dominating front 7. Did Daboll screw up the game plan this week, or did the Colts take it away?

I don't think we even realize just how far and how fast Allen is improving on a near weekly basis...what is talked about in that article is clearly exceptionally high football IQ(no...not a reference to the poster), understanding what the defense is trying to do in certain situations, how to best attack it, speaking up and the coaches believing in him to the point they call the play he asks for and then he goes out and executes it to perfection including looking off the safety to hold him before coming back and throwing a laser to the area of the field that he knows will be vacated and his guy will be running wide open to.

That is next level QB'ing. That is like Aaron Rodgers type stuff. It is just stunning not only how fast Allen has reached this level from where he was at but just how much further he can go.

Just like when he draws them Offside with his cadence and then tries to throw deep like Rodgers does on a free play...either try and get a free completion or a DPI and get a 40 yard penalty instead of a 5 yard one...next level.

Coverages that caused Allen issues earlier in the year like against Tennessee and KC he is now shredding when the 49ers and Broncos attempted them.

Allen has progressed to this point so fast and from so far away it's hard not to just be giddy to think about the possibilities for the next 10 or 15 years.

Absolutely! We really can see him improving week to week. As much as I'm blown away by his arm, it's his ability to adjust and be coached that impresses me the most.

  3. I don't envy the decisions that Beane will have to make. But this is the price of being a good GM in the NFL. You have to be willing to let good players walk. And you must draft well. I absolutely loved the signing of Williams. But it will be hard to keep him and Milano. Also, we have to make sure there's enough money to sign Josh and Edmunds to extensions (I believe these are the priorities for Beane and McDermott).

Then you have to expect that Diggs will want a raise soon.

Watching this there are so many things that you can see growing in Josh’s game and improvements that it is just unbelievable to me.

#1 - Josh gets credit for working in the off-season on his technique and footwork, but he is not getting near enough credit on the film study he must have done.  Watching the 1st play they highlight (Cole’s seam pass) - you get a sense of just how much work he put in.  The recognition of the defense, the leverage of the WRs to decide who is open, the anticipation in how Cole is going to speed up in the route, the ability to move to put himself in the best angle throw, etc.  it was all on display.

#2 - Anticipation throws: You can really see that this year he recognizes the coverage and starts his throws before his WR is uncovered and throws passes into windows that are elite level.  The seam to Beasley is perfect - both he Cole recognize the coverage.  Cole slow plays the route and as they get close to even with the defender - Cole starts ramping up his speed.  Josh recognized what Cole was going to do and starts the throwing motion just as Cole starts to speed up and puts the ball perfectly on him.

#3 - Foot work: The other change that I have seen is the modification of Josh’s footwork and throwing motion.  His rookie year - he threw the ball like a pitcher in the classic QB style.  He would work to get his feet (stride), his hips, and his shoulder all in a classic line where he was throwing the ball.  This allows for get velocity and torque, but he really lacked control and if he slightly over strides or under strides the accuracy of the throw was off.  His throwing motion this year reminds me more of a Shortstop/Third baseman with a more open stance with his feet, but his hips and shoulders still in alignment.  This opens up the hips to get more torque, but has allowed him to control the throws so much better.  He also is able to use the motion to manipulate the defense because he is in a throwing position even as he is running - he is able to mimic the start of throws easily and freeze and move safeties to allow a better throwing window.

#4 - Recognition: The thing that is most striking to me is how quickly he is recognizing defenses and then manipulating the defense.  Last year it started to get better, but this year it is on a whole new level.  Many times with the pre-snap motion - he knows man vs zone, but he also recognizes based on grouping if they are going to try and combo him, trick him, or change things up.  It is more than just is it man coverage because DC are now playing split coverages Man Zone combos and As long as Josh takes what they give him - the coverage has lead to plays like the Davis TD where a small miscommunication is exploited for a TD.  The part that is incredible though is even with the broken coverage on that play - Josh stares at Sherman and gives a motion like he is throwing short holding him and giving Davis free ride to the end zone.  Without using his eyes and motion to hold Sherman - there is a chance for him to get back and break up the play, but that slowed him down and opened everything up to be a breezy TD.

Just amazing see the growth and maturity to match the talent.

Agreed. You can find athletic guys with rocket arms in the NCAA. But what has impressed me the most, and what gives me hope for the future, is Josh's ability to be coached. It's clear that he recognizes that he has issues, and you can almost see him working on those issues from week to week. The jump he made from year 2 to year 3 is bonkers. He's committed to learning and perfecting his craft and it shows.

A side note, I feel the same way about McDermott. He seems to be willing to adjust his coaching style and tendencies. The ability to self analyze with honesty is invaluable. We have guys willing to do that.

  5. It seems that most seasons, a talented team gets hot late in the season and rides the wave to a deep playoff push (2019 Titans). The Bills this season have had a lot of key injuries yet still have found success. Looks like this team is getting healthy at the right time.

The Bills are well poised to be that hot team heading into the final stretch. Fingers crossed.

    Broncos - Win

Jets - Win (though could drop this one they never sweep Jets)

    Bengals Win (for now)

    Chiefs - Loss

    Pats - Loss

    Raiders - Loss

    9 - 6 going into Bills game.

I hope you're right. But I can easily see this Dolphins team beat the Pats and Raiders. My guess is that we're both likely at 11 - 4 going into the last game for the AFCE title.

  7. In the offseason, I couldn't believe anyone was writing off the Dolphins. They had a depleted roster last year, but played hard for their coach (who I think is excellent). The restocked in the offseason, and had a solid draft.

Looks like we're back in the early/mid 90s. Bills and Dolphins duking it out for the AFC East.

But, to your point, we need them to lose 3 of the next 7 to be safe. Then the Bills have to do their part.

  8. What happened is that defenses figured out the offense that Daboll spent the offseason designing. To be fair, this is also the offense that Allen has been running all offseason as well. We need to see if Daboll and Allen can adjust their game. We haven't seen that yet. And until this happens, our offense will continue to struggle.

I know he's crazy athletic, but the part of Josh Allen's game that has impressed me the most is his ability to learn and adjust. He's coachable. I believe he has the ability to get things right. He just needs time. But how much time can we afford? And is Daboll the right person to teach him? I don't see Daboll as having the same ability to adjust his game.

    I guess we'll see.

  9. Josh and Daboll need to show that they can adjust their game mid-season, not just during an off-season.

On the other side of the ball, we seem to have a finesse defense that lost it's fire (except for Hyde). I don't know if it is injuries, new contracts, or the loss of guys like Zo, Shaq, and Phillips. But this defense needs a jolt. Hopefully Frazier and McDermott figure out some coverage schemes that give our d-line a chance to apply pressure. And hopefully they find a scheme to keep Klein on the bench...

Seattle, like the Bills, has relied on their offense to carry them. The defense stinks. On paper, this game should be a high scoring affair. It will be difficult, but the Bills can win this game.

With respect I think that’s a cop out.  The real problem, I suspect, is that Beane does not trust his own ability to scout (and/or to analyze the evaluations his scouts give him).  And based on the results, he shouldn’t.  I think he falls back on the Panthers’ pro personnel evaluations because they were done with McDermott/Rivera’s defense in mind and he doesn’t think he has to worry as much about fit that way.  But the players in question have aged 2-5 years and the defense itself has gotten a bit stale.

What this team needs is a fresh approach to college and pro scouting and a lot more self-scouting to understand why it’s defensive strategy has been figured out by offensive coordinators.

I was going to write something similar to this. I've been wondering if Beane doesn't trust his pro-scouting department. There are 30 other teams out there (besides Bills and Panthers). Why keep going back to the Carolina pipeline?

I haven't been critical of the Panther tendency in the past. But enough staying in your comfort zone. This defense needs a jolt. Staying in your safe-space won't provide this and neither will Worley (in all likelihood). If we're going to sign a low level CB, then fine. I agree that this is a big need. I find it hard to believe; however, that one of those other 30 teams doesn't have a practice squad player with more potential than Worley.
