Rapid Reaction - 10 Observation about Tonight's Game

    10) It was a class move and it brought a tear to my eye when the Bills dedicated the broadcast booth to the late, great Van Miller.

For many of us Van's voice will forever be the one that we equate with the greatest plays in team history.

One word for the Pegulas for honoring Miller - Vantastic!

    9) Ronald Darby had a "Welcome to the NFL, Rookie" night as the Panthers targeted him on many occasions and he was burned for a TD.

Still, I thought the first-year CB showed good form for the most part and I believe that he will learn from tonight's game and be a better player as a result.

    8) Matt Cassel was, well Matt Cassel-like. The veteran signal caller completed 7-8 for 45 yards. He threw a bunch of short passes and showed efficiency in the pocket.

If he ends up winning the QB battle, the Bills can win using his "dunk and plunk" style of passing, but man there just isn't any sizzle on that steak.

    7) EJ had the biggest play of the evening, a beautiful 51-yard bomb to Deonte Thompson that put the Bills up by 7 late in the 3rd quarter. He finished 4-8 for 77 yards and wasn't helped by some drops from his TEs, which seemed to really tick-off Rex Ryan in the post-game presser.

Still there seems to be a pall around EJ that I'm not sure he'll be able to shake. At least he kept himself in the conversation tonight.

    6) Tyrod Taylor has that "it" factor. While he had pedestrian passing numbers for the night, 5-9 for 49 yards, his legs provided many thrilling moments as he rushed 6 times for 47 and 7.8 YPR.

He led the team to two TD drives and at times looked like Michael Vick in his prime when he took off and made defensive linemen look like park statues in the wake of his high-powered jets.

He will get the start in next week's game against the Browns. Another dynamic performance could propel him past Cassel in the QB competition.

    5) Karlos Williams looks like a real gamer. He ran 14 times for 40 yards and plunged the ball in for his first NFL TD. His upright running style reminds one of the great Eric Dickerson.

Bryce Brown's career in Buffalo is in real jeopardy.

    4) John Miller looked good, really good. The 3rd rounder from Louisville has been drawing rave reviews since way back in mini-camp and it's easy to see why. He opened up some big holes in the running game and was stout in pass protection.

It appears, at this early juncture, that the interior of the Bills OL is light years ahead of where it was last year at this time.

    3) Admittedly, I knew very little about TE Matthew Mulligan before this game. I hope to keep learning more as I liked what I saw from the former Tennessee Titan.

He blocked well and caught both balls targeted his way. Chris Gragg is another vet firmly on the hot seat.

    2) It may surprise some of the pundits ripping Rex Ryan and the Bills for picking up IK "Jawbreaker" Enemkpali, but the kid looked big, fast and strong tonight. He had a couple of solo tackles and a QB hit.

It's just an early return, but IK might be OK for the Bills and not just an excuse for Rex to rattle the cage of Gang Green.

    1) Speaking of Rex Ryan, I was actually touched by the fact that he seemed so pissed that the 3rd stringers lost the lead late and gifted a one point loss to the Panthers.

Not that I care that the Bills lost, nor do I think Rex should worry himself about such a trivial manner. It's more that I love the passion that he shows.

After the two-faced lip service given the "Bills' Way" by Doug Marrone, it is truly refreshing to have a Head Coach that really cares, down to his bones, about winning and establishing a winning culture around his team.

Keep on Rockin' in the Free World, Rex and I have a feeling those wins will pile up when it really matters.

Next up is a visit by the Browns at SJF before a Thursday night tilt between the two Lake Erie foes. Should be a fun week, can't wait.

Not sure where you're getting this assessment given the game Brown had last night. 52 yds on 6 carries plus a TD doesn't exactly mean his career in Buffalo is in jeopardy when that adds up to an 8.7 YPC. Let's see what happens the next 3 games

  2. Manziel's only chance to play football and have anything resembling a career in football is maybe the Arena League.

The biggest thing I take from it is he has a very short fuse and can't take heckling. If he does this here, what will he do when opposing fans heckle him during a game? Actually, we saw that last year when he flipped off Redskin fans who were heckling him mid-game.

That said, I don't think it matters. He won't play unless mccown gets hurt.

That was actually the Redskins bench he was flipping off, but yeah, at the same time if he can't handle being heckled by anyone, he'll never amount to much of anything anywhere

  3. What do you think of the decision? Must mean Leo is healthy and/or Darby looking good early on. With AW/Duke/Graham at safety (I think the FS/SS roles are somewhat blurred in this scheme) can we cover Gronk finally with Rex's system? Interested to hear thoughts...

If the choice is Duke Williams, while I hope his coverage skills have improved, I wouldn't mind seeing him blowing up Gronkowski since he does like to deliver a big hit

  4. i still think that payton's one year suspension was as harsh as you could get. belichick, with his "history" not sure if he should be allowed to skate on this,

Considering he supported an idea of rewarding those who sought to legitimately hurt people, from a man in that kind of position, he's lucky he's still in the league at all

  5. Pegula got his billions from planning way ahead. If you think he didn't target Rex Ryan 8 months ago you've been lulled to sleep by Ralph Wilson's poor staffing history over the years.

Rex was coming here and replacing Marrone long before they sat Dougie down and said Hey you can opt out and save face or be released. Everybody won, Doug got his money and pride (kinda), we get the coach we wanted. This wasn't luck or chance. And it certainly wasn't Doug's choice to leave.

And don't give me the 9-7 crap, pats gave us the last game. it was a decent 8-8 year in which Marrone showed us, and rest of the league apparently, that he's not a long term answer at HC.

Oh I never thought for a second Marrone was a long term option for the Bills. For whatever reason, there are those that think Marrone was taking this franchise in the right direction whereas 9-7 (8-8) was probably as far as he was going. I was soooo hoping the Jets would hire him, but I can't help but feel that would have been a cruel joke

  6. The bizarre obsession with Manziel, and the need to denigrate him by some posters here, is downright strange.

    Leave the kid alone.

He has more raw playmaking ability/football IQ than EJ (for example) will ever have.

But EJ just needs a bit more time to develop. LOL

Where are you getting he has more football IQ than EJ? He was dumb enough to believe the BS hype and his problems go deeper than alcohol addiction. His biggest reason for going to rehab was to save face after his pathetic perfomances. Tebow had a monstrous college career as well, how'd that work out?

  7. Considering QB was our biggest question mark going in to the off season, if Whaley thought RGIII was all that, he'd have made a play for him instead of Cassel. RGIII isn't any better than what we have and I don't care what he did his rookie year. If Gruden was the one that held him back, then apparently, Marrone held EJ back. Can't have it both ways

  8. Jets defense is stellar- as is ours.

    Neither of us have qbs

But if we roll in with sammy, harvin, McCoy, clay... I'll take that over decker, ivory, kerley, Cumberland 100 times out of 10.

Our strengths our comparable but our weakness is miles ahead of theirs Potentially

The Jets secondary is stellar, everything else not so much. Not to mention while Bowles may have been a great DC in Arizona, he'll still be a rookie HC.

  9. Is it going to change the FO's mind? Doubt it, but it will show our love and devotion to our players. We are part of the team. We can't say good bye to fred in person. We can show him how much he means to us. If he doesn't mean that much to you, don't sign it. No reason to bash it. He's my favorite all time bill. I prefer him to be on this team as I think it will be playoff bound and he would be a nice piece to that playoff run.

If we cut him, I'm sure we'll see him 2 times a year in NE, nyj or Miami.

Miami couldn't afford even Fred's salary after signing Suh

  10. Incognito vs. Suh is the undercard to pacquiai vs. mayweather

favors Suh because he will have endless money set aside for fines. But the crazy train with these two is real.

That will be an interesting matchup. The majority of phish fans are gonna painfully find out Suh and his "tactics" are more detrimental than his contributions. They'll also wonder what happened to their depth players

  11. I swear, sometimes I feel like this is Losman all over again. People cherrypicking Cutler's good performances while ignoring everything else. Losman would complete a bomb in about 4 games in a season and people would consider that good enough although we lose the game by 21-35 points. Yeah we lost the game, but Losman throws a pretty deep ball. Same concept applies here almost. Cutler's got a strong arm so he MUST be the solution. He'd be the best QB since Bledsoe which isn't saying much at all considering all the QBs that came after Bledsoe. Who are this year's FA QBs that are worse than them?

  12. I find it hilarious that dolphin fans think they're one Suh away from playoff contention. If they lose Clay, who would they have on offense that anyone would be scared of? Tannehill is probably the most overrated QB there is. LaMar Miller, hell I have to think just to remember who he is. Wallace they're trying to get rid of. Stephen Ross pulling a Daniel Snyder bodes very well for rest of the AFC East
