  1. Wrong. Cutler had a great year when he made the Pro-Bowl.

Also, you claimed that Rex wouldn't put up with Cutler, then claimed that he never dealt with a player like Cutler. So you had no basis for your original claim. So you made it up.

Who in this league acted anything like Cutler has? Oh yeah, Jeff George. Cutler lacks ANY and I mean ANY KIND of leadership skill. You're gonna tell me that's not a factor for the QB position? It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out Cutler has pissed off other coaches. What basis do you need exactly? Cutler is the BIGGEST joke of a pro football player I've ever seen outside of Jeff George. 3800 yards 28 TDs 18 INTs with 9 fumbles, how much of those TDs and yards came in garbage time? Whaley's not that stupid to either pick up his contract or sign him just to watch him act like an ass and play like garbage.

  2.

Rex never had to deal with anybody with Cutler's attitude either, you're sorely mistaken if you think Ryan would let Cutler get away with that.

So you were just making it up?

Let me know what other Pro Bowl QB's are available.

Making up what?? What does a pro bowl QB mean in this day and age? If Cutler was a pro bowl QB, it was because a real pro bowl QB couldn't play

  3. Quick, name a time Rex hasn't "tolerated somebody." Also, name a time Wood got in any non-rookie's face.

I can save you the trouble. You can't.

Even so, Ryan and Wood would both change their tunes after the first deep bomb to Sammy for a TD.

Rex never had to deal with anybody with Cutler's attitude either, you're sorely mistaken if you think Ryan would let Cutler get away with that. One word describes Cutler, has been and even that's a compliment. He was a crybaby in Denver and pathetic in Chicago. Don't need anything like that in our locker room. Screw Cutler

  4. I don't see how the Bills expect to compete for the playoffs with a below average to average starting QB (Sanchez/Hoyer) or a young developing QB.

    (Manuel).

With so many high quality FAs available at so many positions (except QB) they can fill those other needs if they really want to. They won't get a starting QB in this year's draft most likely.

It's time that Ryan learn his lesson and go get a real starting QB. I'm talking about P. Manning, Brees, RGIII, etc.

Settling for Sanchez or Hoyer or worse is not going to get it done.

Putting RGIII in the same category as Manning or Brees is like having a side order of potato chips with your filet mignon

  5.

If the intention to cut EJ is true it tells me two things:

    1. They are convinced he doesn't have what it takes to be a quality NFL QB.
    2. They don't want to taint the development of their next QB with an EJ drama.

What is an EJ drama? I was for his benching, but EJ's been pretty classy about that. I'm not sure what you're referring to when you say EJ drama. If you mean the drama from Marrone going off, then that's far from anything on EJ

  6. http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/12352779/martin-mayhew-detroit-lions-proposes-penalties-fall-instant-replay-stipulations

This just seems to make too much sense to not pass IMO. Even Fisher's argument against it is terrible:

Jeff Fisher, who is the co-chairman of the competition committtee, was asked Friday at the scouting combine if there was a way to review some penalties and not others.

"Right now everything is reviewable, except penalties," Fisher said. "It will be discussed, but there's -- something that's flagged, you have two standards and, to me, that's the biggest concern with it, is you have an on-the-field, full speed, bang-bang call made by the official -- we'll just say pass interference -- and now you're going to go to replay and you're going to go frame by frame by frame to determine whether it is or not.

"I'm not sure we want to go [there] with our game right now."

I mean what? The goal is to get it right. You go frame by frame to see if a guy crossed the goal line. Why wouldn't you go frame by frame to see if it was PI or not???

Hopefully this rule will be passed.

PI should definitely be reviewable as much yardage a team can get from it. Defensive PI gets what? 30, 40, 50 yards? Offensive PI gets 10, should be 10 and loss of down

  7. This makes sense. It seems to that they want to sign mccown, maybe draft a guy in the mid rounds (like a Sean Mannion) and trade Cutler so they can use that money to start rebuilding the D. Depends where Pace and Fox are in the mindset of the state of the team.

With how much money they have tied up in Cutler, it's gonna be a long time til the Bears can rebuild any other part of the team. McCown very well could be at the very least competition for a QB from the draft if Cutler got shipped off. But for them to do a complete rebuild on one side of the ball, they'll never be able to with Cutler's crazy inflated contract.

  8. I'm assuming Tampa will take Jameis.

Considering the Titans Qb situation (or lack there of), I'd have believe they'd want Foles as part of the package.

    Foles, pick #20, #53 & conditional '15 pick for #2?

Tennessee has way too many other holes to fill to keep picking QBs. I'm betting they'll hitch their wagon to Mettenberger before taking another QB in the higher rounds. They need help all over the place

  9. This is a very good listen from someone who obviously knows there stuff and has worked with Rex in the past.

Says Rex has a great rapport with players and is a brilliant defensive coach. He has a great understanding of defense and has been exposed to football his entire life. Knows defense front end to back end and knows when to call the right play to take advantage of the defense vs. the offense.

3-4 or 4-3 talk is overrated. Rex will use the personnel and run the system that the players can run best. 60% of the time the defense runs nickel anyway. By now most fans recognize these facts, but it continues to pop-up.

Greg Roman has been around and has a great understanding of the game. He's been exposed to a lot of different systems and will adjust his system to what the personnel does best.

He talked about EJ and how the jury is still out on him. He talked about Seattle's approach to the QB position when they found R. Wilson. They had signed Flynn and traded for Whitehurst the same year. He said we could see the Bills do something similar. I really hope they do, we need to see at least 2 new guys brought in to compete.

Usually takes 22-25 starts to find out what you have in a QB (EJ's at 15). There's no "QB Whisperer" that is going to come in and magically make EJ a franchise QB. He says the game isn't too big for EJ which was the best thing he saw early on. They still need to find out what they have in EJ.

The perception is Rex is a defensive coach only, Billick doesn't agree. He gives the Bills credit for hiring a head coach instead of going after an OC because the offense is what struggled and not the defense. Rex will absolutely be involved with the offense, he's not just a defensive coach.

The difference between a first time head coach and someone with experience is huge. Invaluable experience having gone through the process before.

    http://media.wgr550.com/a/101073925/120-brian-billick-talks-rex-ryan.htm

Overall it sounds like Billick likes what the Bills have done with the coaching hires. The number one thing they need to do is find a QB, which isn't surprising to anyone. I really, really hope they are aggressive with their search and aren't satisfied with a mid-tier veteran FA pickup.

The funny thing about this is Billick was saying Buffalo was the worst place to end up as a HC because of the QB situation not more than a month ago

  10.

I stated and conceded that RG doesnt look. He doesnt want to be that kind of QB.

But the question is which of these 2 is able to be that kind. I submit that RG is, and EJ isnt. And its not a question of degree.

RG has it (buried somewhere). EJ doesnt. If you dont have it, its nearly impossible to find it.

RGIII was nothing more than figured out, then he showed he couldn't adjust. Guys like him and Kaepernick are having the hardest time making the transition from a running QB to a pocket passer. I don't condone just handing EJ the job and Ryan won't make the mistake of putting all his eggs in one EJ basket. The more apt description of EJ is he doesn't have it YET. Losman and Edwards got far more of a chance than EJ so EJ deserves the same consideration. That being said tho, he's put himself in a deep hole

  11. I see all of this excitement and optimism but I just can't join in. And for the most part, I agree with most of the ESPN commentators when they talk about this change. I think we made a poor decision based upon our situation and are essentially throwing away any progress we made last year.

When I think about how the season ended and where we were at in terms of progression:

    • Best record in over a decade
    • Best defense in over a decade
    • Year two of consistency
    • Declining Offense with no answer at QB

Based off of that, what did we improve?

    • We brought in a defensive minded coach who runs a completely different scheme. A coach that ran a defense that made Kyle Orton look like Aaron Rodgers. I mean, we shredded them TWICE. A defense that was terrible against the run. Also, in making this change, we are going back to playing people out of position and reducing players like Hughes to situational pass rushers
      • This is speculation, but I'm also afraid that we are going to have to waste FA money and draft picks to bring in people to fit this scheme.
    • Offensively, we brought in an offensive coordinator who had Kaep regress under his watch. And sorry, but Kaep is better than EJ. They were terrible in the passing game with legit receivers and a Pro-Bowl TE. I get that they played elite defenses, but this is the NFL and no one is a cake walk. He produces a running game, but is based upon an offensive line that probably won't be able to be reproduced here with our talent for a little while.

End of the day, while personnel is a big factor, scheme and coaching is too. When the season ended, would you have wanted the San Fran offense and the Jets defense to replace our team? I would say no 10 times out of 10.

I get it. Fresh start, new players to them. But these are big leaps of faith that we can have the running game being promised and that the final 3 years of Rex's coaching career were the anomaly compared to his first 3 years as a head coach.

Again, I want to be optimistic but we basically gutted our strength and reinforced our weakness.

Not sure our strength was gutted, if anything at least, the defense won't lose a step. At best, it'll rise to the #1 defense in the league. The attention the Bills will get from Ryan alone is nice, but I'm reserving judgment on what the Bills do in the offseason and who they go after. If it's a ground and pound offense, the first question is who will be our QB going forward.
