  1. I'm not so sure. I think he does have sources within the organization. I just think his football knowledge is that of an average fan maybe less.

His analysis of our draft plans in the past tell me he does have some good intel.

  2. If you want to count Wilson, Kap, Cam, fine...but outside of Luck IMO there hasn't been a truly great QB drafted since probably before 2008 maybe longer. Those guys I named I think the jury is still out on how great they can be. So I'm not ready to call them elite.

So I do think we have a problem and I think it starts at the High School level. Everyone is going to some variation of Oregon's scheme. Which means they are sacrificing the traditional pocket guy for a more mobile QB. Which is great for winning games with speed and trying to push the pace, etc (which ironically is tough to do in high school bc of the officials--it's not the same as college). But not so good for developing a QB. I've seen as a coach our team go with the kid who's far more athletic then the kid who's the better thrower. I've seen kids leave high schools for this reason to go to one where they think they'll play. It's crazy.

Also, the constant need for plays coming in from the sideline makes them robotic. Not all, but it's not like they're being coached to take risks---the opposite. They're being coached to take what's given. That's the point of the sideline calls. All game. Is that beneficial for QB development? Yes you want to take advantage of what is given you, but come the NFL, well....this is the big time.....Defenses are too good and aren't going to let you take advantage. You gotta make plays.

Luck Brady Flacco and Peyton were your final 4 in the AFC. Wilson Rodgers Romo and Cam in the NFC. I can't take the Panthers seriously---they beat the Cardinals 4th QB and were terrible all year. Wilson is fantastic as a runner but can be exposed as a passer if the run game isn't clicking.....and that D sure helps. I do think he's got the best tools of the crop of the last 5 years tho outside of Luck.

Anyway it's still a pocket passers league but the great ones are getting harder to come by. Defenses are catching up to the read option. I think that's why Kap had a down year. I think that's why Cam is so up and down.

Just my thoughts. See a lot of talk about overall QB play thought it could use its own thread. Curious to here your takes.

  3. Anyone find it interesting that the "victim" he "bullied" ended up in San Francisco with Roman? Jonathan Martin.

I'd like to think Roman (and I bet a lot of other guys) know exactly how overblown in this craptastic PC country we live in the whole situation was.

Also...hopefully this means we won't be overspending for a Guard...that it creates some "the Bills are going for it" buzz by striking early here...and committing our cap room to Hughes, Revis and maybe even Julius Thomas.

    I can dream.

  4. He wasn't able to dink and dunk vs the Giants...

Pressure up the middle stopped him... tonight he stepped right up into a void on many occasions

The undefeated team did not try that. They barely ran screens, they barely went underneath. It was still an offense centered around Moss. Lot more 5 step drops.

And am I missing something. ....the Pats strength is their secondary. Wilson had all day. Lynch ran wild.

  5. When Avril went out things got easier for Brady.

    That was huuuuge.

However. ..the game plan won. The dink and dunk 3 steps throw it 7 yards made the pass rush irrelevant on most pass plays. Quinn got out schemed by McDaniels. And Brady is lethal with the underneath stuff.

Edelman was Co MVP tonight IMO.

Add the fact that Thomas Chancellor and Sherman were not right. Sherman needs Tommy John. That had to deflate the Hawks as they prepared for the game. Meanwhile, the Pats had the us vs everybody thing going. But were still a stupid play call away from losing.

  6. I'll say this. On paper, the O staff and their track records look very meh. Outside of Roman and Kromer (who could be a disaster if OC but he's not..he's the oline coach and IMO probably what he should be til he retires) so I'm good with him and his track record with olines.

But I think Rex siding with "trust" and "loyalty" to some of these guys is more important then looking for guys who want to enhance the resume and move on. I've seen this happen at the freaking high school level (I coached 15 years here in VA).

The best staffs are obviously knowledgeable but also are all on board with the system. This is going to be tricky as hell to get this O right and I think having these guys all on the same page, familiar with each other, and loyal to Rex and thus Roman is more important than getting WR or QB or RB coaches not familiar with each other and no loyalty to Roman or Rex.

The struggles on O this year are inevitable and having a bunch of O coaches more concerned with how that will reflect on them could lead to dysfunction among the staff. Which is possible if these guys had no history or know who they are and how they work.

    Does that make sense?

  7. Northern VA here.

First we were a joke when Marrone was 'let go'---that was the impression they got. The comments then were like "what the hell was the problem?" And I at the time, a Marrone supporter said Bills fans have lost their minds from 15 years of no playoffs. So has the team--the pressure to get in, the trade hung over everything. Just a debacle.

I come into work this past Monday and my Steeler fan buddy who's always busting my balls says "yo...I think that's a great hire. Rex is perfect for you guys." He's a Pittsburgh guy (my buddy not Rex), so he understands the area, the fans, etc.

Today he says to me the talk in Pittsburgh is they want to start looking at Bens future heir in the draft. I said you guys are nuts--if you do, please trade us Ben. He said "no joke if you guys had Ben you'd be nasty."

And that's where we are. We're sort of respectable again; but until that QB comes...
