1. I think in general, you just can't predict what is better for a young QB, starting early or holding back. We have examples for both that show one thing or the other. Manning started early and was successful. Pennington started and was as well. It may be that if they had done the opposite we would have had similar results, or maybe some QBs respond to one situation better than they would if they did the other. We just can't know.

For me, it seems clear that you just start the best player. Whether he be a rookie or a veteran, who ever gives you the best chance to win you start. This isn't a developmental league here, the job is to win games. Obviously the dynamic changes when you things aren't working and you have to make a guess and try a change or if the team is out of the playoffs. Until then, you put your best player out on the field, you can't know what is better for a young qb and winning should always be paramount.

  2. Colin Cowherd just talking about Patriots

FOXBORO, Mass. -- It rained heavily Wednesday, but the Gillette Stadium field was not covered. It was not covered Tuesday. It was not covered Monday.

Yes, the Patriots do own a tarp, and they have not reported it stolen. Perhaps Patriots coach Bill Belichick chose not to have the grounds crew put the tarp down.

The speedy Colts would love to play Sunday's AFC semifinal game on a dry, fast field, anything akin to the artificial surface in their dome home. Belichick would prefer they play in something approximating a rice paddy.

Short of turning on the sprinklers at 3 a.m., Belichick may be guilty of nothing but benign neglect. Of course, he'd never admit to that.

"My job is not to pull weeds, or rake the field," Belichick said. "I have a lot of other things to do."

Belichick was stone-faced when field conditions were raised. Midway through the 2003 season, the middle was so bad that Patriots defensive end Richard Seymour compared the footing to a beach.

Seems the field is going to be messy for game......

Well the NFL shouldn't allow this sort of stuff to happen, whether or not the rules explicitly say something one way or another. It's much worse than letting the doors open to help the wind. This is putting people's health at risk both the Colts' and the Pats'.

  3. and god knows donahoe loves CHEAP........to bad he won't pony up the cash to keep a good, young player like jennings around and instead goes bargain bin shopping........with our cap, we can afford to keep our talent around.......

    Is Kris Ferris still available?

  4. Said in Marvs book( which God love Marv, IMO the book is awful) that Ralph and Bill were the ones who coudnt get along, and that Polian was actually fired in Septemebr but stayed on thru the year for continuity. Again, could be glossing over the reasons in the book, but that what it said.

Oh BTW, no way is Polian lucky. Man is flat out among the top three execs in the league over the last 15 years

    202714

Polian seems to understand that character and intelligence matters when choosing players for a football team.

  5. What is with this love fest for the Minnesota Vikings all of the sudden?  This team has won 1, count them 1 meaningful game outdoors in what, 3-4 years and now SO many people  think they will win in Philly...i dont see it at all.  They beat a GB team whos defense is pure swiss cheese and Favre is very erratic at times now, they arent NEAR the team they once were at home.

Remember Vick destroyed GB in GB and then went to Philly and lost to a Eagles team with a gimpy McNabb??

Philly will not blow the Vikings out, but I dont see them losing this game.

    201494

I could go either way on this guy in the sense of who I want to win. On the one hand, I'd like to see Philly lose the conference championship again. On the other hand, I want an 8-8 team to make the Super Bowl on the NFC side.

  6. Sure does, pretty good at it also. He's one of those players who knows ST rules like few do.

The drop-kick is still legal for kick-offs, PATs and FG attempts, and free-kicks (after a safety or a fair catch). It's not used anymore because the ball is less round-shaped than it used to be, and there's a lot more players on the roster (hence more specialists) than there was back in the 40's and 50's, when drop-kicks were common.

    201473

Am I right in always thinking that the college ball is at least slightly more round than the pro ball?

  7. Can you fair-catch and kickoff and do this or can you just do it with a punt?

Also, I thought I remember reading that basically you can drop kick from anywhere on the field and kick a FG. I.e., you could be running around down the field and try one. Seems sort of like Australian Rules Football.

  8. What if.....the Bills beat the Steelers.....could they beat the Colts in the dome?  Would they have had better success in defending against their pass attack?  The Colts defense was still vulnerable to a good ball control offense.  I was really looking forward to this match-up.

    201192

Probably would have been a little closer, but not by much. Nevertheless, I take little solace in this fact. It may look like one time will kill the other team on paper, but that's why you play the games and you never know. I would have rather seen the Bills have a shot and be humiliated in the playoffs than being humiliated by second-stringers in a must-win game.

  9. If you could only keep one of our major FAs this off season, who'd it be?

According to the Bills Daily poll and the general consensus of TBD, most people seem to want to keep Pat Williams over Jonas Jennings.

    Why?

Marcus Price is a good backup, but that's about it.  Jennings is still very young, just entering his prime and has improved a lot with each year, despite some injuries.

On the other hand, Pat Williams is replacable. He's a good guy and has played well, but as long as we have Sam Adams, I think Ron Edwards could be a really good starter and he's shown us quite a bit since Krumrie came aboard.

So, if you could only keep one, who would you prefer to stay?

    201110

For these very reasons, Pat Williams will probably come cheaper than Jennings. I think that is the key reason why many of us would rather sign the former than the latter.

  10. Our defense put up pretty numbers against lousy offenses hampered by bad conditions. Any time you play the likes of Cleveland and San Francisco, your defensive stats will look good. But look at the way the defense performed in our losses:

    - Against Jacksonville and the Jets, the defense allowed a game-winning drive late in the fourth quarter

    - The defense allowed New England to score 24 points in our first meeting, and suffered a complete collapse the second time the two teams played.

    - The defense allowed a back-breaking nine minute drive to Pittsburgh. Prior to that drive, the time of possession for both teams was about equal. The defense gets 100% of the blame for that drive.

That leaves just two losses--Baltimore and Oakland--in which the defense wasn't part of the problem. Neither of those teams are exactly known for having a great offense. This defense is good enough to get by with. But it's not good enough to carry the team.

    200605

I think one of the reasons why the defense has a problem holding teams on final drives is its gambling nature. I think sometimes the team blitzes a little too much especially on crucial situations. A big-time pass-rusher opposite Schobel could make a big difference in this regard.

  11. I noticed that Favre's pal Peter King is still calling for the Bills to Dump Bledsoe In his MMQB column today

Last week he calle him "grim, dinosaur-like" and "too old."

OTOH, Green Bay ends up with just one more win than the Bills, and Favre looked awful yesterday and in their game against J-ville for example. Does King call him names or tell him to hang it up? Oh no, of course not. He just says yesterday's game was a "stinker" for his buddy Brett, and quotes Favre's post-game comments.

It's alot easier to pile on someone when they aren't your long-distance phone friend.

    MMQB

    200340

What I find funny about his rankings is how he ties Buffalo with Miami at 15. Seriously, does the Pittsburgh lost really make St. Louis and Seattle better teams? I doubt it.

  12. IMO, that was the worst thing to do.  How about ignoring him?  How about if all the idiot sportswriters and talking head just discussed something ELSE today?

The reason Moss and the rest of the showboat crowd continue to do things like this is because they enjoy the attention and the "controversy".  Who gives a rat's ass what he did after the TD?

    200099

I agree that these things get blown out of proportion. Just b/c it is blown out of proportion or that he's doing it just for attention doesn't make it right. Also, there has to be some line somewhere. I think we can think of extreme things he might have done instead that most of us agree would definitely be out of line.

  13. Classless TOOL -

God I hope the Vikes lose ..I can't stand Moss + Tice.

    199947

As much as Moss might be obnoxious, I am rooting for a Rams-Vikings NFC Championship game. This would be hilarious to me. Two 8-8 teams, at least one goes to the Super Bowl. What a crapterpiece!
