1. Matthews was a starter with the Bears and with the Redskins.  He has 22 career starts

Technically, you are correct, but I don't believe any team has ever gone into a season with him as the starter and he has typically played out of necessity when the true starter was either injured or stunk up the joint. In other words, he's basically an Alex Van Pelt clone. That's not the worst thing in the world, but at best, he's a stopgap if he has to start.

  2. You're writing off an awful lot very good play by Bledsoe by simply saying anyone could have done the same.  It's very easy to suggest anyone could do it.  Given 4 NFL games to play in, with no pressure in any of them, Losman coughed up a 38.9

    quarterback rating.

And if you seriously think Shane Matthews is a starting NFL quarterback, then you apparently don't actually follow the game of football. But I admit, it is cool to come in and rag on the QB when a team loses.  Its the easy way out for people who don't want to take the time to see the whole picture.

In the case of Shane Matthews, I agree with you. He's never been a starter in the NFL and I doubt he'll ever be.

On the other hand, I think you make a very, very weak argument against Losman with that QB rating. How many passes has Losman thrown this year? Five. If he had thrown a couple hundred passes this year, I might be worried about his low QB rating, as it would be indicative of consistently poor play. As it stands, however, its not indicative of much of anything.

  3. I thought Bledsoe had solidified his position as the Bills starting QB next year unless he really tanked it in this game. Guess what? He did. He stunk it up in the biggest game of his Bills career and was a large contributor to a loss that led to the team missing the playoffs. I don't know if he will be back with the team in '05 or not, but I think his time as the Bills starting QB is over. Its time for the JP Losman era to begin.

  4. Would that be the Moulds that dropped two easy first down passes in the first half?

I'm to the point where I believe the Bills need to clean house offensively. McGahee, Evans, Villarial, MWilliams and Jennings are the only guys who should feel safe in their jobs at this point, IMO. The high dollar underachievers should be feeling a lot of heat beginning in March.

As for Moulds, unfortunately, you are correct. He has dropped far too many passes this season and has done far too little with the ones he has caught to justify his huge impact against our salary cap. If they can reduce that cap hit, I think he's worth keeping, but regardless of what I believe they should do, the Bills are going to have an important decision to make about his future with the team.

  5. yeah, I love our D.......they have really become dominant.......I don't blame them one bit for the way they are playing the end of this game......they can only do so much......the Offense needs to "adjusted" before next season.......Please God, let the adjustments begin with Drew

    188135

I can't blame the D, either. They simply got NOTHING out of their offense today and were on the field the whole game. You can't expect any D to hold up when that happens.

If I were Donahoe, I'd make a serious overhaul of this offense in the offseason. Bledsoe, the OL and even Moulds should be on the hot seat.

  6. how are they runnin' so well vs. Us?

    188087

They've got the best OL in the league and the Bills defense will likely have been on the field over 40 minutes by the time this one is over due to the ineptitude of the offense. That is not a good combination for any D.

  7. Yeah, at this point, the fact that the Bills are only down by 6 after that turd of a first half is good news. The offense really needs to wake up and if I were Mularkey, I'd be more than a little upset with my starting offense right now.

The OL, as is typical against a good opposing defense, is getting its a$$ handed to it by the Steelers front 7. McGahee had one good drive and has been met in the backfield since. Bledsoe has been awful. Moulds and Reed have dropped passes. Evans hasn't even been given a chance.

They'd better get their act together quick in this second half.

  8. LA, I agree, but I am confident about the Bills going into this game. The "needing help" part is what bugs me. You know why? Because there is not a football team in the NFL that scares me as a Bills fan right now. Not effing one.

    GO BILLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    183034

I agree. The way the Bills are playing, I think they can beat anyone right now. I'm sure the Bills will gladly accept any lucky breaks that come their way, but if they play the way they have the last 6 weeks, they're as big a threat as any team to win it all.

  9. Everyone knows we have to dump Henry.

He won't put up with being a backup going into his FA year.  No responsible agent is going to let a player in Henry's position remain with his current team without some serious squaking.  I wouldn't be surprised if his agent tells him not to report if he isn't traded, and they'll tell TD all about it this February.

Henry has as much chance of being a Buffalo Bill next year as you or I & I know I'm not making the roster.

    181309

Henry has far less leverage with the Bills than you give him credit for. If Henry threatens to sit out the year, so what? McGahee is the starter anyway. If Henry sits out the season, then what good does that do him? None. In fact, he'll have missed the better part of two seasons and his FA value will be down the toilet.

  10. ..and then Indy drafted E. James and paid him more, approx 48-50 Mil. Polian didn't save any $$. I remember that story well.

    181262

It didn't make a whole lot of sense, although it worked out for them. In the end, looking at the 1999 RB class, you can't really blame them for drafting James at 4 to replace Faulk. Outside of James and Williams, the rest of that RB class was absolutely awful.

  11. Faulk's situation was an abberation. The Colts thought he was done. They also knew that they were going to draft either Rickey Williams or Edgerrin James, and took what they could get for Faulk. Corey Dillon is a much better example, IMO. A few excellent seasons, thought rightly or wrongly to be a malcontent. Dillon had a couple more good seasons. Travis has a couple more good seasons left as he is several years younger. Neither is a great blocker or receiver.

    181253

Agreed. In addition, you also have to consider that Henry has proven that he is a solid, if maybe unspectacular NFL RB and compare that with what is likely going to be available in R2. Look at last years draft as an example. Would you rather have a guy who has proven that he can rush for 1300 yards and 10+ TDs, or would you rather have Tatum Bell, Julius Jones or Greg Jones? I don't think its too tough of a choice. The point is, its not too likely you'll find the next Barry Sanders in R2 and Henry represents a safe choice and a very good value for the investment.

  12. You guys who think we'll get a 2nd are dreaming.  Marshall Faulk in his prime got a 2 & 5.  Henry is a good lunchpail RB who has never been considered in the same class as Dillon & Faulk, has had a history of injuries & fumbles and is one 16 year old girl from a prison cell.  Please face reality, his contract is up at the end of next season. A conditional 2 for 2006, maybe, an outright 2 in the offseason NFW.

    181242

You do realize that Faulk forced the Colts' hand, don't you? He only demanded (and ultimately recieved, from the Rams) $45 million, which Indy could not, or would not pay. Everyone in the league knew they had to dump Faulk and it drove his price down as a result. The point is, the Faulk trade is not representative for the typical value a RB holds. The Saints got a 1st and conditional 3rd (that ultimately became a 1st) for Ricky Williams, who I doubt anyone considered to be the equal of Marshall Faulk at the same point of their careers. The difference was that everyone knew Faulk was going to hold out for big bucks.

  13. I doubt that Donahoe will trade Henry for less than he has invested in him. If the Bills trade him, it will likely be for no less than a 2nd.

The Bills should have no trouble finding a trading partner amongst the 10 worst rushing teams in the league. Most of them will not be able to draft a top prospect at RB in R1, but could probably obtain Henry with a 2nd round pick or combination of picks. That's going to look like a much better deal to a lot of teams than drafting an unproven rookie in the top 15 picks and paying him a huge salary.

  14. In the second half of this season, although his stats are not too impressive, Bledsoe has actually played quite well. He looks much more comfortable in the pocket than at any time in his Bills tenure, almost to the point where it looks like a weight has been lifted off his shoulders. I think he's realized that he doesn't have to win games for the Bills, he just needs to give them consistent QB play, even if its not always pretty. The biggest difference in him seems to be his decision making. Not only is he getting the ball out of his hand much quicker and avoiding sacks (decent OL pass protection has certainly helped), but he's also making good reads and decisions with his throws, even if his accuracy sometimes leaves something to be desired. As a result, he's been a much better player as of late.

In the end, I think he's pretty much saved his career with his play of late and has shown that there can still be a place for him as a starting QB with the Bills. The key now for him is to keep playing well and to continue to improve.

  15. Wasnt there a whole lot of teeth gnashing on draft day when Lee Evans' name was called?

    181045

I don't remember that. There were a few, but you'll always have that. Most of the negative comments toward Lee Evans were in regards to his height compared to the other top WRs in the draft class. Of course, at 5'11 and 200lbs, the guy isn't really undersized. Myself, I was very satisfied with the pick after having predicted the Bills to select Evans (and Losman through trade) in the first round.

As for Evans vs Roethlisberger, I'd pick Evans. I'm not sold on Roethlisberger yet. He may turn into a great QB, and indeed he appears headed in the right direction. But I want to see what happens next year when defenses really get a chance to take a long look at his play on film and adjust accordingly. Evans will have to face that to a degree as well, but I like his chances better as a WR than that of Roethlisberger at QB.

  16. If San Diego wins and New England loses and we make playoffs we play New England in 1st round. If Colts win we play Colts in first round. If New England wins ansdDiego wins we play San Diego in first round.

Who would you rather have the Bills play in 1st round???

Also, Colts need to win next week or we wont be in playoffs... unless Jets lose last 2 games...

    178629

If the Bills can get into the playoffs, I hope they play New England. The Bills have a terrible track record against New England, but if, IF they could find a way to win that game, it would be a huge boost going into the remaining games.
