1. The only reason I see Pat Williams winning these polls because of sentiment. As no doubt Pat Williams has enamored himself to Bills fans but I for one can not understand why people are so quick to toss Jennings aside. I know of the interview he did with an Atlanta radio station that everyone cites. I know that he has not been an ironman. I know he might command a big salary. Yet I still fail to understand why so many are willing to let go of a 27 year old LT who in 52, or if want to to count his games at LT 42, games that has only surrended 13.5 career sacks? His primary backup is due to be an UFA as well outside that we have next to no depth. To me it's illogical to want to let him go especially with all the troubles we've had on the O-line.

In comparison, Williams is over 30 and we have some depth at his position.True he's a good player and been a workhorse but I just can not understand why people feel it's better to keep him over Jennings if they use their heads instead of their hearts.

I agree. Ron Edwards has played well as the third DT and the Bills also drafted Tim Anderson last year. They may not be as good as Pat Williams, but the Bills do have them as potential replacements on the roster. I'm fairly certain that Edwards could, at the very least, play well enough to get by with.

What do we have at LT besides Jennings? Nothing. There's a contingent of fans that seem to think Teague can play LT in the NFL, but he was terrible in Denver. Of course, even if he can, you've got to find another C, which we don't have.

  2. Open competition is the best way to go.  To the guy who called Testeverde "decent", who were you watching.  He's been inconsistent with every team he has played with.

    199117

What do you expect, Brett Favre? If he were a starting caliber Qb, I wouldn't be suggesting him as a backup. However, he does offer more starting experience than practically any QB in the league, will be inexpensive, and can still be an adequate spot starter if necessary.

  3. No comparison. Henry is a much better backup to McGahee than Williams. Henry has proven that he's a solid NFL RB. His average may not have been great, but Henry has never started a season strongly for the Bills. His average was actually pretty terrible for the 5 or 6 games last year before he ran all over every D he faced the second half of the year. He is an ideal backup who can easily post a 1,000 yard season as a starter if McGahee weren't available.

That's not to say I think Shaud Williams is a bad player. He's actually pretty good. But his role is as a change-of-pace RB at best, one who gets maybe 5 carries per game on average over a season. I don't think he can be effective in short yardage situations with any consistency at his size. He can't be a true backup to McGahee if that's the case.

  4. Start Losman. Since I don't think Bledsoe will be willing to be a backup at this stage of his career, the Bills will likely have to unload him and bring in a decent veteran such as Testaverde or Holcomb as an insurance policy.

Losman will have some struggles at times his first year or two, but as long as he avoids the catastrophic mistake, the Bills should be fine with him as a young starter while he improves. All they have to do is rely upon the team's strengths: the running game and the defense. They should plan their improvements this offseason around both to maximize their effectiveness. All Pittsburgh did this season was go 15-1 with that formula. They probably won't duplicate that record, but they should be plenty competitive as long as they emphasize their strengths and avoid putting Losman in bad situations while he's adjusting to life as an NFL starting QB.

  5. Sorry, but I spent the previous 16 weeks wanting every other team in the AFC East to lose. I hate the Patriots. I hate the Jets. I hate the Dolphins. That isn't going to change anytime soon. I'm hoping that they both lose and lose badly.

Other than the Jets or Patsies, I don't want to see either Atlanta or San Diego win the Super Bowl. Otherwise, I don't particularly care, although I do hope Green Bay wins it all.

  6. He only missed one pressure kick this season (coincidentally, it was the only one he attempted) because MM didn't have the confidence in him to even give him a shot at it.

His kickoffs this past Sunday were HORRIBLE, as they have been much of his career.  The coverage team and excellent tackling (for the most part) masked his ineffectiveness (especially lack of hangtime/distance).

You can quote stats all day long.  Lies, damn lies, and statistics.  The phrase exists for a reason.

    193009

Exactly. Even the Bills coaching staff shows an apparent lack of confidence in Lindell. This season, they quite often seemed very apprehensive about allowing him to attempt anything over 40 yards and many times he wasn't given a chance. That speaks volumes, as does the fact that his longest FG of the season was a paltry 43 yards. The stats are meaningless, as practically all of his attempts were from short-to-medium range.

  7. What a laugh this thread is. TH wants out, he waits until AFTER the season to say so publicly. Problem? Oh that's right, a bunch of "reliable insiders" on this board somehow know for a fact that Travis was bitching every chance he got when the media wasn't around. If you hate the guy so much, just say that and be done with it. He can't fuggin win. IF he complains publicly, he's a POS. If he doesn't then he was OBVIOUSLY complaining privately so he's a POS. With fans like this, I can't imagine why he would want to start anew.

So he thinks he can be a starter in this league, how dare he think this? The great counter-argument to this theory is that he wasn't good enough to beat out a practical rookie coming off knee surgery. As if Willis is the worst starting RB in the league. Just because he couldn't beat McGahee, doesn't mean he can't be #1 somewhere else. Do you people really think that Willis ranks so low on the list of starting NFL RBs?

But that is all a matter of opinion. The truly disturbing part is the total lack of humanity that "fans" show for the players they watch every week. What happened to the days when players moved on from the team they were either wished luck or fans would shrug their shoulders. Now it's "he's a piece of sh*t. He's F'ing retarded. He's a whiny B word. He's a cancer." (Oh and the irony of BF accusing someone else of having Gump-level intelligence).

I wouldn't want to play for a team who's fans turn on their players with such vindictive hatred. Would you actually walk up to someone you did not know and call them a piece of sh*t or a whiny little B word? It's sad. Especially someone who was hailed as a warrior with a huge heart just one year ago.

    191297

Simply put, I agree with you completely. Some people are being pretty shi**y to a guy who was a very productive runner for the Bills and who played well even with injuries that would have kept many RBs on the bench. His handling of the McGahee situation hasn't been perfect, but he never turned into a much of a problem and he kept his mouth shut to the media until after the season. I don't have a problem with a guy wanting to be a starter. Hell, isn't that the attitude you want in a player? His career with the Bills is probably over, but I wish him the best of luck with another team.

  8. OK, this season was his season for holding the clipboard...next year he starts, problem solved!

Thank god that TD traded for our QB of the future THIS year rather than drafting him next!

We at least have another option right now!

    189595

Myself, and I'm certainly no expert, but I think that he'll either 'get it' or he won't after that one season on the bench. I think one year is probably enough to learn most of what can be learned on the sidelines and now, the rest will have to be learned on the field. He should have a good enough understanding of the offense that if he's going to be a great player, he should be able to overcome a few bad days and still show quite a few glimpses of the great QB we expect him to become in the years ahead.

  9. Before Big Ben, Culpepper, or Leftwich played would you have stated that they were ready? I think not!

It sounds like your suffering from a conservative approach to "grooming" a young QB. Aikman said today that the only way he can think of for a young QB to learn is to play!

I still havent heard any real plausible thing that Losman can learn from holding a clipboard. He just did that for a year, that game is now over!

    189563

The one thing that holding the clipboard for a year allows Losman to do is learn the playbook without most of the pressure of preparing for a game each week. It also gives him a chance to practice with and watch what his teammates' strengths and weaknesses are, and to see how the offense is supposed to operate with a veteran QB at the helm (well, in theory, anyway). In any case, the better his working knowledge of the offensive system before he has to start, the better his odds are of having a successful first season as a starter.

  10. You guys are missing the point. JP is not Big Ben, Culpepper or even Leftwich.

He's not ready but if you guys want to waste our team with JP at the helm next year, that's fine.

    189546

You're right about one thing. JP Losman is JP Losman and no one else.

As I stated earlier, neither you or I know whether Losman is going to be ready to start by next year. It really doesn't even matter what you or I think, either. It only matters what the Bills front office and coaching staff thinks, and if they believe Losman can handle it, they'll likely give him every opportunity to win the job for '05.

  11. JP will take years to groom into an NFL QB. It's not like the kid came from the "U" or Tennessee or Auburn where they breed NFLers. He played for Tulane. This kid isn't the Bills answer in the near future.

All this talk about him being the man for next year is crazy. He's too underdeveloped. Chances are he may never groom into his expected potential. It's a big chance we took in drafting him.

That being said, the Bills need someone else at the helm next year. Drew can't lead this team, however, with whatever else is out there, he might be our best bet.

Dare I say: Doug Flutie? Haha ... jk!

    189338

Who cares what college he played for??? There are plenty of examples of very good QBs currently in the NFL who played at lesser schools. I'd also point out that Losman's former teammate, Patrick Ramsey, has played fairly well as a young QB and appears to have a bright future ahead of him.

As for whether or not Losman will be ready to play next year, I don't know the answer to this and neither do you. There is one thing I DO know, however, that being that the Bills did not draft Losman to sit on the bench.

  12. I think he could do fairly well. He'll have been through an NFL training camp, will be familiar with the capabilities of his teammates and will have had a year to learn the playbook. He still needs more practice reps, but if they name him the starter early, he'll get those reps.

Otherwise, the Bills need to improve the LG and C positions with the emphasis on run blocking. If he can rely on McGahee and the running game to win games and just allow him to play a support role as a passer (much like Pittsburgh has done with Roethlisberger), there will be a lot less pressure on Losman and the more likely it is that he has a successful first year as a starter.

  13. As far as I'm concerned, Reed can join Lindell as the first two players cut this offseason. I really thought he'd be a good player when we drafted him, but he hasn't even been decent. Its really suprised me that it has been his inability to catch the ball that has been his downfall. In college, he caught everything thrown near him. Oh well.

Although I like what I've seen of Aiken in his limited role, they need to bring in another WR this offseason either through FA or the draft to compete with him as the #3.

  14. It all starts at CENTER... A stud CENTER!

    189009

Now I will agree with you here. I believe the C position is even more important than a good LT. Most QBs can deal with some pressure to their sides, but a pass rush up the middle usually presents a major problem for a QB as he can't step into his throws. In addition, I think a good C is a necessity for a consistent ground game as well.

  15. I hear you.

I saying to NOT cut Drew.

Make JP and DB compete fairly for the job.

The bad part for you guys is that, by far DB will show better skills and win the job with his job on the line.

Quite a situation for the Bills!

And who hasn't seen marked improvement by DB this year with Wyche as his coach?  In his youth, he had exactly that to his credit... Youthful ability.  The Pats

did him a disservice by never plugging him in with a QB coach when he really needed it... Unfortunately, he might be wrecked forever because of that lack of foresight?

It is only fair I give him a another year under Wyche.

And yes I will compare him with Jim Kelly... Hell, wasn't JK 30 before he went over the top... 32 is just too young!

Everybody wants to paint JK throwing picks at the goal line of the '89 season as a young kid that was growing... He was almost 30!

Everybody who wants to scrap him because he is old has just seen him for a long time... Remember, didn't DB come out as a junior?

So it comes down to quibbling over 2 years of age?

    0:)

    188991

Actually, its more about experience than age. Kelly had been in the league 4 years. Bledsoe 12. Kelly was also pretty clearly an up and coming player, while most would argue that Bledsoe is on the downside of his career.

Also, Bledsoe will not be the better of Losman in terms of physical ability by any significant amount. Losman is certainly more mobile, but he's got a very strong arm to go along with it. He can compete with just about anyone in terms of physical skills.

  16. He seemed to always be the 3rd string QB, when healthy this year.  Does that mean Wyche and Mularkey thought he wasn't ready?

    188998

I suspect that the Bills simply felt that Matthews would give them more consistency if he had to come in during a game due to a Bledsoe injury. Had the Bills lost a couple more games in the middle of the year and had nothing to lose, I think we would have seen Losman playing a lot.

  17. People are talking about bringing in another vet and cutting Bledsoe....

    WHY?

What have we seen that leads us to believe that JP Losman cannot develop into the QB we need?  All we have friggen seen him do is hand the ball off.....

I mean think about it.....with the way our defense was playing today how helpful would it have been to have JP tucking and running on some of those plays when nothing was open?

    All I know is I dont want Bledsoe....thats it....point...period

    188941

I'm all for starting JP Losman next year.

Myself, I think the anti-Losman posts are just bizarre. We simply cannot make an informed guess as to how he will eventually pan out given how incredibly little he has played. And realistically, I have news for some folks. The Bills did not invest a 1st and 2nd round pick in this guy for nothing. He WILL be the starting QB for the Bills. You might as well get used to it, because its just a matter of time before it happens.

  18. Don't encourage her.

Every reasonable person, even some of the Drew apologists, know the offensive line hasn't been a problem this year. They have done well, even great at points.

Even when Drew had plenty of time today, he bumbled it.

The O-Line isn't the problem, kids. It's the guy behind it.

    188902

No, the truth is that both are a problem. The pass protection has been fairly solid this year, but the run blocking has often sucked. Today was another example of it, where they opened holes for McGahee on one series and did practically nothing for him the rest of the game. That has to improve, both for McGahee's sake AND for whoever the QB is. Few QBs are successful when they're put in 3rd and long situations all day. If Losman is to start next year, the Bills would be very wise to upgrade the OL, not only for better pass protection, but also to give him a more consistently effective ground game to rely on (much as Pittsburgh does with Roethlisberger).

  19. I think this salary cap age makes everyone dizzy with hope of scrapping a stable future for the unknown.

You guys would have ran Kelly out of town after he made the Clay Matthew's pick.

    :(

    STAY THE COURSE BILLS!!!

    188732

The situations are different. Jim Kelly was just entering the prime of his career. Bledsoe's best days are behind him and, at best, he probably only has two or three years left in him as a starter. Not only that, but the Bills also have invested too much in JP Losman not to give him a shot at some point fairly soon.
