1. No, that makes too much sense. Those clowns (TD & MM) won't do it. They're either too dumb or in denial. They'll continue deluding themselves that this team could make a run, and won't put in JP until we're about 4-9.

    486401

Give them a little credit. Those last 3 games will certainly be enough to judge JP by going into next season. After pulling the plug four games into this season, I am absolutely confident that this staff won't make a hasty decision on an issue that will affect their success for the next five to ten years.

    :)

  2. If they're going to fire anyone, they should fire Tom Donahoe. Its been five years since Donahoe took over a hideous team. They're still hideous. We've changed coaches. We've changed player personnel. No results. The time for accountability at the top is rapidly approaching.

  3. That would be fine if JP goes 7-9.  Was that where we were headed before they made the switch?

Suppose we finish 8-8 with KH.  At least that makes the offseason easy - KH is the starter unless JP looks better, and we devote our attentions to improving elsewhere.

But what if we had stick with JP and finished or 4-12?  Would you feel good about sitting tight at qb and having next season depend on him improving dramatically?

    483886

Coming off an 8-8 season, what makes you think Holcomb would be the starter? The Bills went 9-7 in 2004 and all it earned Drew Bledsoe was a trip out of town.

  4. I've been asking myself the this question ever since the "braintrust" at OBD announced it.

Can someone please explain to me how 8-8 with Holcomb helps us more than 7-9 with JP using this year as a valuable learning experience?

    483800

It doesn't, and never did. The only way it would pay off is if the Bills made the playoffs. Needing to finish roughly 9-3 at the time Losman was benched, the odds of that happening were not particularly good. Although you don't want to give up on a season, especially in week 4, sometimes you have to be willing to see the inevitable, and it was clear that this team had major problems besides the QB.

The problem now is that Mularkey has painted himself into a corner. Benching Holcomb would be an admission that he made a mistake, yet if he leaves him in and the Bills miss the playoffs, its going to be quite clear that he screwed up. The only out for Mularkey is if the Bills can find a way to make the playoffs, otherwise, Mularkey may have tied his own future with the organization to the increasingly likely failure of this QB switch.

  5. Heart is certainly not the only thing this D lacks...They are overmatched physically at almost every Position (apologies to Adams, Clements, and McGee...but 3 out of 11 aint too good...), add to that they run a scheme that looks akin to reckless abandon most of the time leaving gaping, and I mean HUGE gaping holes in the cut back Running Lanes and sometimes even gaping Holes in the primary Gap. Then to top it all off they are a barely average Defense in both areas of Tackling and Rushing The Passer, and this is what you get...Giving up HUGE points to very average Offensive Football Teams...

I would be lying if I said I was surprised by todays performance. This Defense is just not the same without Fat Pat, then losing TKO was the Death Blow....Get used to it Y'all...I dont imagine it's gonna get much better seeing as though this D is already allowing HUGE Rushing Numbers at Home...And the tough part of the Schedule is ahead of us...

Todays Game is the exact reason why I was not in favor of starting Holcomb. I knew the Bills would Win a few more Home Games vs. lousy Teams. But in the end, all you are doing is costing JP Game experience because this is not a very Good Team overall with a pourous Defense. Starting Holcomb pretty much assures the Bills will be 6-10 or even 7-9, instead of 4-12 or 5-11....And to that I say so what....

    483581

That's exactly why I was also against the QB switch. I don't think we're a playoff team with either Losman or Holcomb, so what's the point of getting a couple extra wins against cupcake teams? There isn't one. Get Losman in there, get him some experience and for crying out loud, get something accomplished for the long-term this season. As it is, it seems we're just supposed to be satisfied with being consistently mediocre.

  6. Perfect throw to Randy Moss, how do you stop that?

Maybe if the D could get some pressure on Collins????

    483261

The defense has gotten pressure on Collins. The problem, as it has been for about four years, is that the Bills have to blitz in order to get pressure on the QB, and that creates mismatches in the secondary.

  7. I'm thinking that since the Bills script their first drive, and they've scored 6 out of 7 first drives this year but bogged-down usually after that, that they should be scripting ALL of them.

    483255

All they really need to do is just let Willis McGahee run the ball. When they refuse to do that, they don't move the ball.

  8. Eball last year was his first year starting at cb, he has improved greatly but last year he showed a hell of alot more than people are giving him credit for in my opinion,am i way off base?

    482292

No, you aren't off base. McGee has been much better than he's given credit for since day one as a starter. He wasn't perfect, but even early last year, you could see that he was going to be a good one. The only thing he lacks is height; he can cover, he can tackle and he can make a play on the ball. I think he may actually be better than Winfield was due to his big play ability. His return skills just made him that much more valuable. I would have considered him worthy of this contract extension this past offseason and I think the Bills are getting a bargain if he signs. Its a great move locking him up with a relatively inexpensive contract before his price goes through the roof.

  9. Brandon - I have to take a bit of exception here with your comment that the other 3 DL are not doing anything against the run.  Granted, while I don't think Tim Anderson isn't striking any fear into offenses - I thought that he played a pretty solid game.  In fact, he did have a key sack Sunday.

    478952

They've allowed about 1,000 yards rushing in 6 games so far and about 5 yards per rush. Clearly, someone isn't getting the job done.

In past years, we had two excellent DTs to occupy blockers, take up space, and pick up the slack for a pair of average DEs. Now that we only really have one DL that a defense has to worry about, they can gameplan their running game around and away from him, and the numbers above have been the result. The Bills have far too many overachievers on their DL. Its fine when you have one of them, but you can have too many. 3/4 of your starting DL is too many, and the lack of true talent is taking a toll.

  10. The other three guys aren't doing anything against the run, either. At least I know Adams can play. The other three aren't going to strike fear into too many offenses.

For all the whining about the OL, I'm beginning to believe that DE and DT are our biggest needs going into this offseason. Its not just a luxury; we really need an elite pass rusher and another quality run stuffer up front.

  11. Tough schedule ahead.  Sooooo if Bills don't make playoffs or end up 1 game short what happens next year?  Another learning year????

    477666

That's the key question and its why I think the Bills have to make the playoffs in order for this to be a successful switch. We'll know in about 11 weeks if it was a good call or not.

The negative with Holcomb is that he doesn't have much arm strength. He throws a lot of 0-8 yard passes and on the ones that are thrown to the sidelines, the ball just takes too long to get there. Before long, the DBs are going to start jumping the routes regularly, much like happened yesterday on the INT returned to the 1 yard line. That said, Holcomb is playing fairly well. He usually makes good decisions and is accurate enough. He's playing well enough to not get the Bills beat and well enough to hang onto the starting job for now. He, and the team, were much better than last week.

  12. 470954

This guy("Brandon") has been trashing the Bills all day! We could have won by 50 and he would have said it was the wind or a string of luck. Just another Troll, with nothing to do!

    470963

Namecalling? Seems to me like the pot might be calling the kettle black.

As I've stated repeatedly, a win is a win, but what I saw today is not encouraging. For most of the day, they looked like the same team I've watched for the first four games.

  13. I agree with everything you said but Brandon let me ask you this: Do we win today with JP starting? Kelly is not the long term answer but if your a wide reciever on the Buffalo Bills or even WM how long can you possibly take it before you blow a fuse due to JP's play?  You have to find a way to get the ball to the weapons that line-up on Sunday. The offensive line is as it has been for as long as Jim Kelly's days is our main problem and to me their is only 1 person to blame for that.

    470808

Actually, no, I do not think we would have won this game with Losman, but that comes with a big disclaimer: I think our first three drives were the result of the team getting an emotional boost from the QB switch. The rest of the game was much more representative of how I think they'll actually play next week and even further down the road, which is to say a lot closer to how they've played all year. I see the QB switch as having an overall minimal effect in the longer term of the season and just sacrifices development time for Losman with little advantage in the W/L column.

  14. Based on today's performace, Holcomb should be allowed to play on.  While you ask: "What did the offense do in the second half?", I ask:  "How many mental mistakes did Holcomb make during the game?

The answer to my question is ZERO.

Holcomb, while not stellar by any means, played mistake-free, turnover-free football.  Aside from a botched handoff that appeared to be McGahee's fault more than his, Holcomb's throws were right on the money, he made quick decisions and did not throw any game-killing interceptions the way JP has done.

JP is still young, he has some bad habbits and doesn't yet know how to read complex defenses and it has shown in the past 4 weeks.  He is lucky he doesn't have 5 more INTs because he has thrown it directly to defenders, only for them to drop the ball.

If we continue to play mistake-free football on offense, the points will come.  Holcomb showed me that he is capable of that.  I say ride that train.

    470777

He had one nearly disastrous mistake late in the game with the lateral. That could have cost us a FG in what was a three point game.

  15. I think the problem was more on the offensive line in the 2nd half than the QB.

    470774

You know what? I don't disagree. I think the Bills have problems that go much further than the QB spot. I'm simply pointing out that for all the bitching about Losman, we needed a lot more than we got out of Holcomb in the 2nd half today, too. Part of that is the QB's fault (Losman and Holcomb). Part of that is also the surrounding talent and coaching. This offense is not very good and I think Holcomb is just a bandaid for one of many weak positions.

  16. It's a 60 minute game.  If the coaches are worth anything, they'll look at what KH did right and expand on it. Keep JP on the bench for now.  'Phins did a nice job of ajusting in the second half.

    470764

That would be the correct course of action at this point. That said, I do feel that the first half was more a result of the team getting an emotional boost from the QB switch. Once that wore off and the team came back to reality, they looked like the Bills of the first four games. In a lot of ways, it reminds me of the Texans game.

  17. Um, those sacks were the fault of the blocking, not the QB. If you allow defenders to come untouched or pratically untouched up the middle of the field, your QB is going to take sacks.

Buffalo's offensive problems in the second half were because Miami did a better job exploiting our line. Having gone 20-26 on the day, the QB is not the problem.

    470723

20/26 is a meaningless stat. How many yards, points, and first downs did this team manage after the first three drives? Once the energy of the QB switch wore off, it looked like the same team that played the first four weeks. They couldn't put Miami away despite the fact that the Dolphins seemed intent on giving them the win.

Holcomb looked like what I thought he was when the season started: a good backup and a decent spot starter. He's not a difference maker and a savior for the ails of this offense, and I think the 2nd half proved it.
