  1. Would you agree that Marrone changed the culture at Syracuse? Also, its not like Syracuse has tons of recruits. He had to work with a recruiting program who attracted bottom 1-2 star recruits. The Syracuse program basically gets recruits who dont have any other options. I would guess that they are one of the FBS schools that has the least amount of guys in the NFL. Syracuse had some very big character wins this year. 4th quarter comebacks and overtime battles. That shows his team had character and confidence when the game is on the line. Whereas, the Bills have constantly played not to lose and lost big games in the 4th quarter over the years. So if he has a proven ability to change a programs/franchise' culture. He has NFL experience working with a pro style offense under one of the best coordinators in the league. And as a bonus, he's not some Southern or California import. He's from the region/state. Why would you not feel positive about a guy like this? The Bills have nothing to lose. Its a shitbum franchise. Maybe he can be the guy. Hes not the typical retread. If anything, it shows the organization is doing things differently this year. I dont know why there is so much negativity on this board. Its ok to be both realistic and hopeful.
  2. I have alot of respect for Jaws and Cosells opinions. Jaws has Nassib at #2, and Cosell has Nassib above Geno. With Nassibs 4 years of experience under Marrone and Hackett, my view is that Nassib is the best pick for the Bills. Ive mentioned this in other posts, but that 4 years of experience working with the current coaches goes along way in communication, play calling, and knowing Nassibs strenghts and weaknesses to harness or develop. I also like Nassibs record of come from behind and overtime wins. Shows leadership ability and desire to win. Whereas, Geno hung it up in the games WVU was down. Do I think any of these guys are the new face of the franchise? No.Do I think Nassib is our best option? Yes. Do I think EJ Manuell is an awesome athlete with alot of talent? Yes. Do I see him starting for any team in the NFL? No.
  3. Huge difference between hubris and confidence in ones ability. I think the Russ Brandon GM and now president of the organization would fit the definition of hubris. He obviously is not in touch with the reality of his own abiltiy But each new coaching staff brought in has had confidence, tried, then failed. But dont you want a new staff to come in with confidence? I have no problem with Marrone having the confidence he does based on his experience in the NFL with the Saints and his proven track record of turning a horrible organization around like he did in Syracuse. Only time will tell if he can accomplish what he has set out to do. But even if he tries and fails, I would not consider it hubris Although I agree with you, I do think you need let these guys have a shot and bring some optimism into your point of view. From the few posts Ive read of yours, I dont understand why you would even want to join a Bills board. You bash the team, and bash any fan who has some hope. Nothin wrong with a little positive thinking mixed in with your realism,.
  4. I think you bring up an important point. Are his flaws coachable/correctable? Who better to asses his potential than the coaches who have already worked with him for 4 years? If they decide not to draft him, I think that says alot. If they do draft him, I have confidence the coaches know exactly what they are getting and believe he has the capability to live up to his potential. Every qb ever drafted have been drafted based on potential. Some live up to it, most dont. I just hope, like the rest of Bills nation, that we find that franchise qb soon. I dont care who it is, and dont feel like I have the knowledge to make a proclamation on who is the guy to draft this year or any other. The one serious benefit of drafting Nassib is the 4 year relationship established between him and the coach. Nassib knows exactly what Marone wants in any given situation, and Marone knows what he can get out of Nassib in any given situation. This puts him light years ahead in the developmental process of a rookie qb. I think if he is drafted, we will find out immediately if he is an NFL qb. Immediately, as in he wont start for 3 years like JP Lossman if it doesnt click. So the Bills could move on to the next option.
  5. It was only a few years ago that Kolb was very highly sought after free agent. He wound up with a team who had the worst O-line in the NFL and got absolutely destroyed. I am excited to see what he can do behind a legit offensive line and see if he could live up to the hype that followed him before signing with Arizona. My expectations are realistic. Redemption and revival is rare in the NFL. If I am being honest with myself, I dont see him becoming a franchise qb or even much of an upgrade from Fitz. But that doesnt mean I am not going to hope he can be the man. I feel better having him on the roster than I did before he was on the roster. I certainly think he has more potential than t-jax.
  6. I dont think he installing false confidence, he is just setting expectations high. The Bills have some talent on the roster. Wannstedt was possibly the worst coach in the NFL last year. I think scheme change alone will do more to maximize the talent on this team. Let alone, an attacking style defense brings along with it an attitude, whereas Wannstedt's base defense was terrible. I could write for days about how awful his scheme was as I am sure any fan could see. I've been on a football team where people didnt expect much out of you, and labeled it a building year. That year we (Aquinas) went on to win a NYS championship. And my HS has been winning state championships ever sense. Everybody but our coach and locker room didnt believe in us and that was something that directly effected our team chemistry. We changed the culture, changed the attitude. The Bills have had a losing culture. Marrone is trying to change that. He wont change the culture by telling the team he is aiming for 10 wins. That said, I dont think the Bills are going to the Superbowl this year. But I have zero issues with Marrone setting the expectation that he is only going to accept the best from his players. And that's what he is doing.
  7. Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Drew Breese, Eli Manning - no wheels and solid but not booming arms. Jay Cutler has a booming arm, but he hasnt won much of anything. Michael Vick, Donovan McNabb - wheels and strong arms but no superbowls. Granted, Nassib has not had the college career any of the afore mentioned had. That said, I like EJ over Geno or Barkley.
  8. And look how quickly tannehill shot up the draft board last year as well as what he achieved as a rookie. Manuel, Barkley, Geno, they all were surrounded with much more talent and were in programs with a tradition of winning. There is alot to be said for Nassibs numbers, record, and sr season coming out of a program like Syracuse. I personally believe Nassib is the best pick for the Bills. Sometimes great things happen because people are in the right place at the right time. With Marrone coming to Buffalo, and Nassib coming off his sr season, I believe this to be the right place and right time. We will know how marrone and co feel about Nassib based on the draft. If he passes on Nassib, then I will be proven completely wrong and willing to accept that I was wrong. If he truly feels Nassib can be the franchise, he might pick him up at 8. If you believe a guy to be the answer to your franchise, no pick is too early. The one thing I do feel confident about is that Geno Smith will not be an NFL franchise qb simply based on the fact that his leadership skills have been questioned by many. I have personally watched him with a towel over his head, pouting, and a defeated look on his face during games where he should have been fired up and ready to go.
  9. I do think he is the best option available. I do not think Geno Smith is a winner, and I dont see any other qbs from this draft becoming starting qbs in this league. Its just my opinion. There is a good chance I will be proven wrong but only because one of these qbs might come out and surprise everyone in the NFL like some qbs have done in the past. But having the arm strength and footwork does not make a winning qb or make a guy a better choice That is something that has been proven time and time again. Unlike some others, I am not claiming that I know it all. My opinion is backed up by my what Ive seen from each of the available qbs. In your opinion, who do you think the best option at qb for the Bills draft? And thats purely a question, I am not trying to disqualify any opinions you may have. You previously said blue collar meant white and under paid. Now you are saying blue collar means white and a lesser player. As well as blue collar means unskilled labor. So you think a carpenter doesnt have skill? Precision machining can be done by any guy off the street? And if 99,9% of the time its a white lesser player, and this is who the nfl should be running away from, then you are saying they should be running away from all of us of who never made it to the nfl and are white but love the sport. Let's just move on. Because you are taking this in a direction that really has nothing to do with football and more to do with your beliefs.
  10. But back to topic, Ryan Nassib, in my opinion, is the qb to draft this year now that weve picked up Kolb. I would not take him at 8, I would prefer to trade back and pick up some picks. But there is just too much value in the coaching staff having already worked with him for 4 years to pass on him and take a shot on another project qb. The terminology, the communication, the understanding, the situational play calling in games, the comebacks and OT wins they pulled off together in 2012, the playbook or at least parts of it, and all of the work already put in to develop that coach player relationship for 4 years is not an opportunity that comes along often in a draft situation. Nassib might not be the the qb for the future, Kolb has maybe a 5% chance at being the guy for the future (comebacks rarely if ever happen), but there is no clear franchise qb to be taken in this draft so for all of the reasons I listed above Nassib makes sense this year. All of these qbs coming out need polish. If he doesnt work out, we draft another qb in 2014. But risk/reward, Nassib is the guy for 2013 in my opinion.
  11. Born and raised in Rochester. Took a sales gig for Paychex in Boston out of college but I am a die hard Bills and Sabres fan. It was hard being a Bills fan in Boston especially because it was 04'-10'. So Boston sports was winning at everything (football, hockey, baseball, basketballl) and New Englanders are some seriously annoying sports fans. Ive been back in Rochester for 3 years now, and its good to be home. There was a fun Bills backers bar out in Boston across from The Garden but it doesnt compare to being around all of my dillusional friends (myself included) who think the Bills are going back to the super bowl after every off season. I was at the Garden last year when Lucic destroyed Ryan Miller and none of the Sabers did anything about it. It was probably the most embarassing moment as a Buffalo sports fan in my life. I considered finding the nearest fan with Lucic jersey on, pulling his jersey over his head and getting in a hockey fight with him just to defend the honor of Buffalo sports fans everywhere.
  12. Yes, exactly. I am glad more people see the big picture when it comes the draft and allowing us some flexibility with the Kolb move. I am not a draft expert, and I havent watched much game film on Smith. From what Ive read and watched, the guy definately has all of the physical tools. But what I really want in a quarterback is a guy like Tom Brady or Montana, or Elway, who thrives on competition and that 4th quarter challenge. Eli Manning is another guy that comes to mind. As much as I hate Tom Brady (even though I respect his talent), you gotta love how calm and cool the guy gets when the game is on the line. He is a winner. Some guys thrive on that competition and lay it on the line My concern with Geno is I saw alot of coverage of him on tv with his head down when his team was down. He didnt appear to be the type of qb to rally his guys for a win. Cam Newton is a great qb, but Im not sure he will ever win the big one in the NFL purely based on his leadership ability. He threw some hissy fits this year and his leadership ability came into question. The college game is a little different because one player can take over a game. Cam, VY, both loaded with talent and could take over the college game, but neither have proven to be leaders in the NFL. Its all speculation and opinion on my end. One thing I do like about Nassib is the guy is a winner and a leader. Syracuse pulled out some really tight games this year, some in OT, some in the 4th quarter, and I think that leadership intangible is just something that is hard to measure.
  13. Exactly. What are the negatives? This move just gives us options. It really opens up our options in the draft most importantly because now the Bills arent forced to reach for a guy. I dont think he is the answer for a franchise qb, but who knows how good he could actually be? He played behind a terrible O line in AZ and Philly. At one point, he was a hot commodity around the NFL. He didnt stand a chance in AZ. But again, he wasnt signed to be the answer at QB, just a move to give us more options. With only 6 picks in the 2013 draft and a common agreement among scouts and gms alike that this qb class is weak, it gives the front office options. There is an option to trade back and pick up more draft picks. Most importantly, the Bills will not be forced to draft a qb way ahead of what the guy is valued at. I for one think Geno Smith and Matt Barkley will both be busts in the NFL. Geno might have the tools, but he is not a leader and sat on the sidelines w his head down during games when his team was down. He doesnt have "it". So now that the Bills have Kolb they can take a risk in round 2, 3, or later on a guy who has a higher ceiling and needs more polish. Personally, I think the Bills will be drafting Ryan Nassib. The current coaching staff already has 4 years of work under their belt with this guy. That working relationship alone adds serious value. The communication and understanding between coach and quarterback after 4 years of working together gives Nassib a huge head start.
  14. Ive actually been around for about 5 years. I started out years back under a different name (BostonBillsBacker) but lost my password and every time I requested a new password I never received one to my email account even though I got a message saying an email had been sent. Part of the reason I stopped posting on here was because of the amount of ridiculous posts Ive seen. But its hard to stay away when you love the Bills, and there are some people on this board who bring a lot of value and I like reading their opinions.
  15. Great post and well thought out. A great qb can make all of their receivers look good. Eli, Peyton, Brady, Breese - all have had a rotation of receivers throughout their careers they made look great without having a Megatron/Fitzgerald type receiver. With the addition of Kolb the Bills have positioned themselves to move back in the draft and add picks.
  16. Inspires: A head coach who has turned around a dismal program with sub-par talent who knows what it takes to rebuild a program/franchise. A defensive coordinator who believes in blitz/show/disguising multiple packages. Nothing was worse than watching Wannstedts awful game plans eatin alive while he sat back and said he put his players in a position to win. He truly put together some of the worst defensive schemes I have ever seen and was so stubborn and incompetent that he never wanted to change.
  17. This might be the most ignorant statement I have ever read on here. Since when does blue collar mean white and underpaid? Blue Collar is hard working, nothing handed to you, give your best no matter how unappreciated your talents are. Fred Jackson could be considered the poster boy for a blue collar athlete. One could argue that over 90% of nfl fans are blue collar. Why would the nfl run away from their fan base? Whatever unsettled personal and political issues you have dont pertain to this topic.
