  1. You said "He's gonna suck as a pro... he doesn't pass well enough."

The guy is barely 20 years old, completed 68.5% of his passes and averaged 8.5 yards per attempt.

I don't know how you could speak so assuredly.

We can't possibly project how well he'll pass the ball even one year from now, much less 2-3.

Just the same, I don't know how people can assume that he will become a significantly better passer. Also, he seems to thrive on "broken plays", and I don't think that will translate very well to the pros. And I certainly think it's silly for people to want the Bills to pass on this years Qb crop, solely because he MIGHT declare for next years draft, and the Bills MIGHT get to select him, and He MIGHT become a better passer. He isn't Andrew Luck.

I think at best, he could become the next Doug Flutie.

  2. His cap hit is $10,450,000 if the keep him under the current contract. If they cut him, the cap hit is $10,000,000. If they were to cut and resign him, they still take a 10M cap hit plus whatever they re-sign him for. That scenario aint likely to happen. If they cut him, he's done in Buffalo and they will move on. I will add, that if they cut him... the Jonny Football countdown is on. Even if the Bills fill the QB in the draft, there is no QB in the draft or left on the Bills roster after a Fitz cut that will be effective enough to win games. The QB will be under tight control in year one of the transition and the defense has a lot holes too. So if Fitz goes... the Bills are in full rebuild mode and this season is a write off.

Johnny Football is gonna suck as a pro. Not every running QB is gonna become Russell Wilson. He doesn't pass well enough.

  3. I agree wit you I think 2 QB's that we took JP & Trent could have been better QB's had they not had to go through what they did while here in B/lo.

JP had what 3 different OC's while here, not to mention that every time the guy made a few bad throws they were benching him & then they'd put him back in, that for sure does nothing for a young QB's confidence !!

Then Trent just didn't have a O line to keep him upright so he had to get rid of the ball & even when he did he still got tagged just about every time.

JP had a gun & Trent although not as strong of a arm as JP got the monicker Captain check down & was ragged on which the fans here are stone cold & have no common sense when it comes to being rational about situations such as either of these payers were in while here.

All QB's or most any players in bills fans eyes are to be Superman & carry the team to prominence in the NFL !! That's why JP, Trent, Kelsay, & others didn't have a chance when it came to public or fan opinion in a Bills uni ...

    Nah.

None of the Qb's the Bills had, went on to have success elsewhere. Please, the "Trent Edwards was good before the injury" claim is wrong. He was a 3rd round draft pick type talent, and it showed. At best he might have made a nice backup someday.

  4. I actually tried to have a look at the Super Bowl winning HC records they had without their Star QB. It was very difficult as often the first thing a new HC does is find their star QB.

Here is the list of SB winning HC for the last 10 years.

John Harbaugh: Flacco drafted 1st year.....performed well 1st year.

Tom Coughlin: Eli Manning drafted 1st year....performed poorly 1st year(6-10).....performed well 2nd year.

Mike McCarthy: Favre in 1st 2 seasons.....Rodgers thereafter.

Sean Payton: Brees in 1st year.

Mike Tomlin: Big Ben already there.

Tony Dungy: 76% win record with P. Manning....56% win record without star QB.

Bill Cowher: 73% win record with Big Ben....56% win record without star QB.

Bill Belichick: 77% win record with Brady....45% win record without star QB.

Honestly, I wouldn't care if they only drafted Qb's every year, and just tried to fill the rest of their needs with free agents, and undrafted guys. It's getting ridiculous, they have basically gone 2 decades without competing.

  5. You can have as many good coaching staffs, coordinators, QB coaches, lines, WRs, RBs, TEs etc as you want........if you don't have a top QB, you typically won't be going very far into the playoffs.

Yep. The whole premise of this question is way off, too. How about "How different would this organization look if it had a great QB for the last 8 years?" Coaches (head coaches, position coaches, etc.) don't want to come to a team that doesn't have a good QB. Free agents don't want to come to a team that doesn't have a good Qb. On and on....the entire complexion of the team would probably be different.

Rookies coming in would likely have a different attitude if their first pro experience was with a team that was on track. No doubt that losing is contagious. How successful are the Detroit Lions at luring coaches, players, front office people? Who would YOU rather work for, the Pittsburgh Steelers, NY Giants, Denver Broncos....or the Lions?

There are just so many variables.

  6. Actually, no, no he doesn't. New staff has made it clear its not a lock to be Fitz job, that its an open competition with at least TJ. So the premise that a palmer would be brought in to replace Fitz is flawed, since its not currently Fitz position and may never be again, palmer or not.

    C'mon dude....

  7. I keep hearing about the 2014 draft class of QB's, If Manziel has a down year or opts not to enter the draft as a red-shirt sophomore then the class doesn't look very inspiring right now. That could change.......as we know, Barkley was a consensus top 5 pick last year had he come out and coming into this season it looked like Barkley and Logan Thomas were destined to be the top 2 picks in this draft. Didn't pan out that way, but the talent at QB in this draft may not have any Andrew Luck's but there ar still some worthwhile prospects with a lot of talent.

Barkley is going to have a better pro career than Manziel. Holding out a year, in the hope that Manziel will be available for the Bills to select, and that he will be a good pro, is DREAMING.

  8. Here are 2 qbs with their stats for the last 2 years, and their 2013 salary (bonus included)

    QB A

    age: 30

    past 2 seasons: 7232 yards, 48 tds, 39 ints, 659 completions, 1074 attempts (61.35%, 6.73 YPA)

    2013 salary: 7.25 million

    QB B

    age: 33

    past 2 seasons: 6771 yards, 35 tds, 30 ints, 544 completions, 893 attempts (60.91%, 7.58 YPA)

    2013 salary: 13 million

This probably isn't a surprise, but just to be clear, we're trying to run QB A out of town b/c he throws too many interceptions, makes too much money, is too old to have a future, and will never be a legitimate qb. Most people on this board have claimed they never want to see him start a game for this team ever again.

Meanwhile, this thread is in support of signing QB B to replace QB A, despite QB B being older, more expensive, and throwing a higher rate of interceptions vs touchdowns.

    Do I have that correct?

Woah, just because one guy is asking about Palmer, doesn't mean all the people that want Fitz off the field, would want Palmer.

They both suck, but at least Palmer had something going on at some point. I'm not sure what happened to Palmer, if the injuries and time away from the game blunted his tools, or it was something else, but he appears to be through.

  9.

While you guys worry about who the starting QB is, I'll worry if this new HC can get it done with any QB.

Those are both good things to worry about. But the coach I will give the benefit of a doubt, because he is new. The QB is still the same though, and we already know he sucks.

    Get someone new in there.

  10. So you see, it's very simple. In the 2012 draft, Luck, RGIII, and Wilson have had success. Brandon Weedon (drafted 33 picks ahead of Wilson) not so much.

In the 2011 draft, Cam Newton, Andy Dalton, and Colin Kaepernick have had success. Blaine Gabbert, Christian Ponder, and Jake Locker (taken 27 picks ahead of Dalton) not so much. In 2010, we're still awaiting any success Sam Bradford, Tim Tebow, Colt McCoy, and Jimmy Clausen might have.

    (begin sarcasm)

All we have to do is figure out who, in this draft, is more like Wilson, Dalton, or Kaepernick and less like Weedon, Gabbert, Ponder, Locker, McCoy, and Clausen.

    (end sarcasm)

I don't think the issue was whether a QB in general could have success as a rookie, but whether any of THIS YEAR's QB class are NFL ready.

Is there is a Wilson or a Dalton or all Locker, Ponder, McCoy and Clausen?

Gabbert and Locker being living proof that because a guy has a great PR machine, throws a bunch in college, and gets drafted in the top 10 picks of the first round, doesn't make him an NFL-capable starter.

None of the above to be construed as an argument against drafting a QB. You never hit the shot you don't take. It's just 1) need to be prepared to keep shooting if the first shot misses 2) there are worse things for a rookie QB than a year sitting on the bench, learning what it takes and getting hungry if he's not mentally ready to go - like getting thrown into the fray from Day 1 and having his confidence dented when he sucks and gets benched in favor of Hasselbeck or Fitz. (Note: not intended to compare Hasselbeck and Fitz)

I think most people here understand all that. The point is, most don't want to sit through another year of Fitz. It's time to do something. Sure, they might eek out a couple more games this year with him, but it's clear that they are treading water with Fitz., and they can no longer sell fans the false hope he delivers. They really should have drafted a guy 2 years ago, but they didn't. They tried to build the team up around Fitz instead, but it's blown up in their face.

I don't know what else there is to say about Fitz that hasn't been discussed, ad nauseum.

Doesn't matter, to my way of thinking. All the QB will be learning a new offense this season. I thought it was a bit bogus by the end of the season, but there's actually some truth in the don't-dress-TJax argument that there aren't enough reps to give 3 QB quality time, esp. after training camp.

Given that, it makes no sense to keep two middle-aged journeyman QB who are pretty much known quantities on the roster. #2 should be a developmental prospect. If there isn't a rookie look for someone who might have promise and is odd-man-out, on the chopping block on a more talented roster, but someone who might be able to be developed.

If they have made up their mind to keep TJax, cut Fitz. It only makes sense to keep Fitz if you want him to compete with TJax for "who does best in the Hackett/Marrone system." TJax has had some success in a run-centric West Coast based system. Fitz at least has exposure to the West Coast terminology (opinion seems to vary on whether St Louis and Cincy were really running a West Coast offense), and as a pretty smart guy, can probably pick it up quickly. Who makes fewer mistakes, who syncs up with the new wideouts better.

    Way I see it, anyway.

    Sounds reasonable to me.

  11. Fitzpatrick has more ties to the Arizona/Boston areas, and isn't beloved by the fan base like Kelly. I highly doubt Fitzpatrick continues to be involved with the organization, and he can be far more successful elsewhere.

Well, (since you are taking this seriously), you have to believe that if Fitz won 2 Super Bowls with the Bills, he would be pretty effin' beloved by the fan base here.

  12. Yup! Even I like Fitz the person. You can see that he wants to be good. He tries like hell to be aggressive, but he just doesn't have it. Wish he would think about going into coaching. I bet he would be great at that :)

i like Fitz, he seems to be exactly what you want in a teammate. Nothing would have made me happier than Fitz coming through, and being a good QB. There is plenty to like about the person, just not his play.

  13. I don't really think having a different QB would bother Stevie at all. The whole vibe of everything he said about Fitz this year, did not seem whole hearted to me. Infact he seemed a lot like he was losing faith in his QB. His body language was off when talking about Fitz, and a lot of time he looked like he was hoping he wouldn't be asked about him at all. Stevie said exactly what he should say( and I think at one point he actually believed it).

I think SJ likes Fitz the person (I think the whole team does. I believe he is a great teammate), but SJ would put up huge numbers, and win a bunch more games, with a quality starter slinging the ball around.

  14. I agree, Fitz is a coach killer.

Seriously, I can't see Barkley not being an upgrade, and quickly. He is polished, with tons of experience, and with his training and coaching taken to the next level, he will at least become a competent starter, something the Bills haven't had in a very long time.

Fitz has thrown for a lot of yards, but he has terrible ball placement, throws a ton of picks, and developed a knack for blowing games. That is why, though many will say with a better game plan he can be successful, I don't believe in him.

  15. I've been aware of Barkley since he was in high school. I was happy he enrolled at USC (and I've watched nearly every game he played there, some in person). And considering he was thrust into starting a year or two too early, he did a great job. HOWEVER, as much as I like him personally, I don't think he'll be a star QB in the NFL. And I certainly don't think he'll be ready to lead a team to the playoffs in his rookie year.

I've watched several Geno Smith games and I can see why people are excited about him. But I think they're editing out those plays where he's less than stellar. And he has those plays in every game. My personal opinion about him is that he's not sound enough in all the key areas a QB needs to be and never will be. In fact, I think he's going to be an enormous bust in the NFL. In any case, you can't seriously believe he could lead the Bills to the playoffs in 2013, can you?

No, I don't see ANY available quarterback leading the Bills to the playoffs this season. I can picture Barkley having some of the throwing limitations that Fitz has (I'm not sure about his arm strength), but I think Barkley won't throw bad interceptions at the rate Fitz does. Fitz is supposed to be great at reading defenses and all the cerebral aspects of the game, but he makes some terrible decisions, especially late in game.

I don't think it will take long for Barkley to surpass Fitz, and having Fitz as the starter will kill the morale of the team before the season even starts. The players need to feel that they are building toward something (same as the fans), and a new Qb is essential to get any kind of optimism started.

  16. From an inside source: mentality in the locker room was they weren't going anywhere with last year's coaches. Perhaps that will all change. After all, what is the talent deviation from team to team, really.

When the team doesn't believe in it's Quarterback, they are going nowhere. The talent level on the Bills overall isn't that different from most of the league, it's just that year in, and year out, they know it's all for naught. It just becomes about playing for personal stats, and the paycheck. Coasting.

  17. I'm not crazy about Smith, but a 2nd round pick, more often than not ends up being a Torrell Troup, or Aaron Williams, or Roscoe Parrish. The 34th pick, for a guy that has at least won some games isn't so bad. I didn't want the Bills to get Smith, but I think it's a justifiable trade.

  18. if we had won that colts game we wouldve been right in the mess of it, with a tiebreaker over the colts - you know, a game mario had 3 sacks in.

jax wouldve put us 6-6, with 4 to go, rams was very winnable, dolphins we had just beat, and jets were a circus. we never got over that cusp with close losses to the colts and rams, but we werent far off either.

By that point it was only a mathmatical possibility. They were done, and they knew it, and most of us knew it. Williams just had a favorable matchup that game.

  19. That's pretty much the way I see it now as well. The guy had a great college career, was the #1 pick going into the season, had a terrible year where he only threw 36 tds, and now he isn't even a 1st rounder? Whatever, I'd roll the dice on that all day and if he fails, draft another guy next year.

My favorite part of the cited interview...

One of the last things we discussed is Barkley's trip to the Manning Passing Academy last July, his first trip to see into Peyton's and Eli's worlds. "I learned a valuable lesson from Peyton, about sometimes you have to be a d---,'' he said.

"Doing what is asked is not enough to win in the NFL, I know that,'' he said. "You've got to do more. And I intend to.''

I can't see him not being an upgrade over Fitz.

One of the team's problems seems to be that no one is holding each other accountable. Jim Kelly did, and I think Barkley will too (I know., he will have to earn it on the field). I recall a Bills player saying something like "everybody on the team gets along really well, but that might be part of the problem".

He has lived in the spotlight for 4 seasons already, and the guy has a ton of high pressure experience, and been through tumultuous off-field distractions. He knows what he is doing. If you compare interviews of him to Matt Leinhart, it immediately jumps out how much more mature he is than that fool. He has shown great leadership skills as well, and his work ethic is unquestionable.

Just pick him at 8, and then get going building the rest of the team.

  20. Let's get one thing straight. I may be passionate, but I do not "HATE", anyone... period. And,I take issue with anyone that suggests that when I express my opinion.

I don't care whether the kid has surfed or not. It is a generic descriptive of a typical southern cal kid... laid back, sunshine, skateboading, surfing, volleyball, hoop, hangin at Venice Beach. Plenty of to do all the time... there's essentially only one season.

So you get all uptight about him using a generic descriptive term (let's get all uptight about the word "hatred"), and then turn it around, and act like he is nitpicking about you using the term "surfer"?

In this case, what you said was actually more disparaging, because you are spreading a falsehood about a player.

    Look in the mirror, man.
