  1. Aaron Maybin has to be included in any subject that includes the words "Draft Busts".

Except when he isn't in the draft that is being discussed.

I know...just look how Kaepernick struggled adjusting to NFL defenses from the likes of the Idaho Vandals, New Mexico State Aggies, San Jose State Spartans, Utah Utes, etc..etc...

    Oh wait...

yeah, but he was setting records, and tearing up the conference. I'm not down on Nassib, but I don't think he is the same prospect that Kaepernick was.

  2. well I don't watch game-tape like you do..well ok not at all..but anyways..i don't think that CB Tyrann Mathieu will last in the NFL...once he gets that money he's gonna go crazy...I know he says he's done with drugs and he knows he has to get his head screwed on,but man that's a lot of drugs he can buy with that money.

I sure there are lots of NFL players, doing lots of different drugs. Like, the league is fueled by pharmacies!

I agree though, he didn't seem very good at evading detection, so THAT could be a problem.

  3. The problem is that it is simply hard to evaluate. Losman and Edwards were given difficult tasks by changing OC every year. They were simply not going to be consistent. To make it worse, the team did not field a good defense, a young QB's best friend!.....We will never know how good these guys could have been if the team had a coaching staff that was consistent for a few years.

I disagree. Neither of them went on to any kind of success, and they both had ample opportunity. It was clear that Trentative either couldn't, or wouldn't anticipate openings in coverage well enough. He earned that nickname like no other. As someone pointed out, he made Fitz look great by comparison.

Losman was a whole different set of problems, but again, I don't think there was a cure. There just aren't many people that can consistently perform at the level needed to win in the NFL. These guys didn't have it.

    LET IT GO...

Thank you for providing the voice of reason. It's a difficult thing, this Bills fandom. I have to keep looking forward.

    20 years....

  4. i just want to see the "Top 10 Selections" list... I would be impressed enough with that. Predicting 3 rounds of the draft is just completely ridiculous, and embarrassing. How do these "draft experts" look people in the eye while they spout this drivel? What kind of a sham "expertise" are these con-men profiting on?

Seriously, it's a load of crap.

  5. I'm sure he recovered from the concussion, but I think there was more to it than that. Probably some upper cervical issues, and those can hang on forever.

Here's an example of Trent playing very good (3:35 into the video). It really is an incredible throw in between 4 defenders to win the game with time expiring

Yeah, see this is what I mean. I sense that some people are EMOTIONALLY involved with his "legacy" or something. Sure, he had some highlights, some nice throws, whatever....fact remains that he was never very good, and certainly wasn't gonna lead any team to the promised land. I don't know if you, and others like you, argued in his favor so vociferously that his failing brings some kind of shame on to you, or you had some kind of personal interaction with him that clouds your judgement. I'm not sure where the problem lies, I just know he was never very good, before "the hit", or after.

  6. Get a grip, he didn't always suck. He made a big jump from his first to second year. From 56% to 66% and 6.1 to 7.2 YPA

He was on a good trajectory until the Wilson hit. He was able to stare down the gun barrel which is good for a QB but maybe he was too good at it

Ugh.... he was never very good. And I'm sure he has long since recovered, but still isn't any good.

I don't know if people here have met him, or he signed something for their kids, or what it is, but people won't let it go. I don't consider him a coward, or a jerk, just not a very good quarterback. Ever.

  7. For whatever it's worth, Peter King's MMQB column today indicated that he's "hearing guard" for the Bills at 8 overall...

Yeah, they were talking about how they weren't gonna bother using any of the 30 interviews on a guard. And how foolish it would be for them to select a guard with the 8th pick.

  8. To add to what JPS said (and I'm just repeating what's been said here many times), I don't think it has to do with what position you draft so much as what individual you draft.

This is how I feel too. The teams that keep drafting Db's, probably still need Db's. When the bills whiffed on McKelvin, they obviously still had a hole at that position.

  9. Maybe good teams don't draft DBs high because they already have good DBs playing which is what makes them good. Maybe bad teams draft DBs high because they know that good DBs make bad teams good teams. Maybe good teams don't draft DBs high because all the good DBs drafted have already been drafted by bad teams. Maybe bad teams are bad because they draft bad DBs at the top of the draft and the good teams are good because they draft good DBs after the bad drafting bad teams draft the bad DBs which should have been drafted later in the draft.

    ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ What I wanted to say

  10. If they aren't going to use the first pick on a QB, they should take the best guy on the board, at a position of need. There are MANY positions of need, and safety may be one of them, but how likely is it that a safety is going to be the best player available when they pick?

Using an 8th pick on a safety, because you have a defensive scheme that relies heavily the play of the safety, sounds very familiar. And why are these coordinators basing schemes around a position they don't think is a team strength?

  11. I hate seeing all the comments about the head-hanging. While I am not denying Fergy did that, I do want to also call out that he had a similar look when he threw huge touchown passes and great throws downfield for big gains. (His five touchdown performance against Miami in the Orange Bowl in Dan Marino's first start ever in the NFL is a great example). He rarely if ever did a fist pump or ran down to the end zone to celebrate a touchdown, as I recall. More of an, "Awe shucks, that's what I'm supposed to do" kind of disposition even on his best plays. You'd see linemen hugging him and jumping up and down, but not Joe.

Several have noted his toughness. He was a very tough, humble competitor. And his recovery from lymphoma and leukemia are truly indicative of his quiet, tough spirit. Joe Ferguson is one of my favorite athletes of all time because of that spirit and because he was a real gentleman.

Yeah, I agree with all of this.

I realize everybody has their own opinion, but some of the things posted are misleading, and Joe Ferguson deserves better as a person. He was by all accounts a GREAT teammate, regardless of how you feel about his play.

  12. Fergy was awesome in the mid 70's to mid 80's. Believe it or not, the Bills had the top ranked offense in 1974 (just no defense) and you can check out some of the game vids from the 1980 season.

I think he would have given Kelly a run if he had played QB on the 90's teams. The 1980 team was probably the most well-rounded team I can remember (not around for the '64-'65 squads).

He was frequently a top 5 QB during his career and a class act as well.

No way he would give Jim Kelly any kind of "run". Jim Kelly is a Hall of Fame QB!

I think Joe Ferguson was above average, and played very well when he finally got a supporting cast.

    Someone earlier claimed..

"IMO, Joe was a lot like Fitz with a stronger arm. Good enough to win with a better supporting cast, but not a guy who could carry a team on his back."

Ha!! Fitz is NOT good enough to win anything but MAYBE 10 games (and a playoff loss) with any kind of supporting cast.

Joe Ferguson was better than Fitz, but not close to Kelly.

  13. The draft is such a hot topic, and the fact that there isn't one standout guy makes it easy for writers to get people to read articles like this. They pander to what they think people want to read.

There are talented QB's in this draft. The new breed has been so well coached compared to guys in the past, and the passing game at every level from Pee Wee to College is more sophisticated, that the top guys are much better prepared than even 10 years ago.

Everyone relax, there is a good Qb in the pile, and the teams have to find him, and develop him, just like any other draft.

  14. What is the likelihood of a 4th or 5th round player ending up a good starter, as a rookie? If you have a desperate need for a starter I don't think those rounds are where you find them. Either the first 2 rounds or free agency. Pretty much any round after the 3rd. teams are just hoping to find someone that can make the team at ANY POSITION. Even running back.

If there is a RB high on their board, I don't think it's crazy talk to think they should select him.

  15. If there is a nice prospect in the 4th round, that is highly ranked, I would take him. At that point in the draft without a doubt, they should be taking the best player available. I doubt FJ has more than another season in him, and having a nice RB prospect (especially one with a style complimentary to Spiller's) would be much better than another back up safety, or back up linebacker.
