  1. There is no auguement for drafting a QB at 1. All the Qbs are prettyi much a reach this year. This years drafts class has no RG3 or Lucks in them and are pretty much projects. The Bills have had a TERRIBLE defense in recent years. Unwatchable!! This team is in desparate mode to get a play making linebacker ! There is where they need to concentrate the first pick. Most of the QBs will still be available in the 2nd rd. There is absolutely no need to reach!!!

I'm fine with them passing until the 2nd round. The defense has many needs, the offense is being held back by one position.

  2. Because no team (that I can think of) has ever drafted QBs in the first round in consecutive drafts, and the Bills are definitely not going to be the first. That is why. If you think that the best available QB prospect is another Blaine Gabbert, you are truly better off drafting no one than drafting him at #8. The Jaguars are STILL talking about building around Gabbert, even with a new coach and GM. Even if that's smoke, there's still the part where the Jags passed on taking another QB last year because they were committed to Gabbert.

Now, if the Bills wait even till the 2nd round to draft a QB, and he stinks, then we absolutely could see the Bills draft a QB in the 1st next year. But in the real world, giving up on a 1st-rounder after 1 year simply isn't done. And drafting another QB in the 1st is absolutely a form of giving up on the last guy.

Obviously, you would hope that the first guy you select shows at least enough promise, that you won't feel that you have to use your 1st pick the next year on another QB, but that would the course taken if he was a disaster. And I have stated elswhere that I can understand passing on a QB in the upper first round if he isn't a blue-chip guy, but if you need a QB and you are letting them pass you by after that, it's foolish.

I think people are overestimating the value of draft picks when it's a team with bad quarterbacking. Guys whole careers go by while the team searches. These guy's whole careers have been irrelevant, and have barely had a perceptible impact on the team's fortunes. These days rookie QB's are coming into the league more fully developed (generally), and can be evaluated more quickly. In the past, teams needed more time to let the QB learn the pro game, and that is a big reason why "it simply isn't done". Now, in the real world, things have changed.

As I said, I don't necessarily think they should just (why do people have to take comments to the farthest extreme?) automatically string together years of 1st round Qb's. Throwing away another year with Fitz, and expecting some guy to fall to us next year is stupid. They will probably finish middle of the pack again (8-8), and not get a shot at the best Qb's next draft either.

  3. They wil go with BPA on their board. It could very well be that a QB is selected in RD 1 or 2 but I wouldn't bank on it.

I was giving them the benefit of the doubt.

You could be right (that's what you want them to do, that is what you are really saying, no?), but hopefully they are smarter than that. All this tripe about "setting things up for the new QB" is ridiculous. They have been trying that for years...hasn't worked. The current cast of receivers is serviceable. They have CJ and Stevie, and a decent line, that's enough to coddle a QB with.

Dreaming about putting together a great supporting cast to ease in the QB is folly. Instead you will get what we have had for decades, a disgruntled team, with guys that are demoralized by week 3, looking for leadership from their QB, and going through the motions for the rest of the season. And eventually their entire careers.

New QB + bad WR corps gives us issues. Id rathrer have any new Bills QB not get Gabbert syndrome their first NFL season... Better to start Fitz or tj and have a functional supporting cast for next year's quarterback.

Starting Fitz will kill this team's morale quicker than a plane crash.

  4. Yea you and I were in agreement at this time a couple years ago when there was debate about whether Cam Newton was going to be the top pick overall or if he was even accurate enough to be a starting NFL QB.

    You take the QB.

When you don't have a QB, everything else falls under the category of "wants' instead of needs.

Exactly. I see someone here say "We should wait until next year, when the QB crop looks more promising". How about we try this year, see how it goes, then try again NEXT year if need be? How about making the QB the #1 priority until they have a good one? If you end up with more than one, you can always trade the lesser guy for a nice return. Just get a QB here, EVERYTHING else can wait.

  5. If they wait until the 3rd round to select their "Quarterback of the Future", I'm skipping this season, and maybe this coaching staff.

If there are guys they like, but they wait that long to take one of them, they are fools.

If they are approaching it like "we'll just wait around and see who is left in the 3rd", they are fools.

I can see not wanting to use an 8th pick on someone that isn't a blue chip guy (at this point, if you are the Bills, you might want to pick the guy anyway), but just waiting around to see what comes to you in the 3rd round, or expecting the guy you like to be there, is not the way to find your QB. They will select a QB with one of their first 2 picks.

  6. And they should take another one next year if there is any doubt that the one they drafted this year isn't going to work out.

You don't miss the playoffs for 13 years in a row because you didn't draft enough Stephon Gilmore's.

I defy anyone to show me how the Bills would be worse off than they are now if they had drafted a QB in the first round of every one of those 13 drafts.

Exactly. In fact, they are so behind the 8-ball at this point, they should draft 2 in this draft. Get a QB! Another backup LB, or middle of the road D-lineman can wait....

  7. The thing I think most of you are missing is that Ryan Nassib wasn't highly recruited out of high school, the 82nd ranked QB that year. Greg Paulus was named the starter Nassib's freshman redshirt year so he hardly played at all the first year. That Syracuse team really had a bunch of nobody's as receivers too.

Nassib has suffered no major injuries throughout his college career, and he took some hard hits and got right back up. Plus he was a Big East all-academic selection every year since his freshman year.

That Syracuse team, and offense became good under Marrone / Hackett, and Nassib became a 1st / 2nd round draft pick because of those two men. So, I think whomever the Bills select at QB this year Marrone / Hackett will be able to coach them up, and develop them properly.

My take is once all the teams realize just how good Nassib is... some team will fall in love with him and snag him before the Bills if they don't take him with that 8th pick

    READ THIS! http://nflsfuture.co...couting-report/

"Good luck finding someone with more intangibles than this guy. He and Tyler Wilson have that gunslinger mentality that I personally love. You can see the competitor come out and teams will fall in love with that spirit. There aren’t any concerns with him as a person or leader. Played in a pro-style offense under Doug Marrone dropping mostly from under center."

This writer states it would be a monumental mistake to take Nassib with that 8th pick. I think it would be a monumental mistake to wait until round 2 and lose out on the guy. This franchise has been without a top QB for almost 2 decades. I hope they take Nassib in the first and Bray in the 3rd.

I want them to draft 2 Qb's as well.

It's pointless to continue trying to build this team without a decent QB. Complete careers have passed without the Bills making the playoffs! A decade of drafts that have produced nothing, and people want to use a 3rd round pick on a safety. How can anyone claim that it would hinder the development of the team (by "wasting" draft picks on too many Qb's) at this point?

  8. Not to worry

The Orangemen did a very good job developing Ryan Nassib considering his inferior WR corps and surrounding cast. Thanks to Doug Marrone and his OC Nathanial Hackett. Hackett will also be QB's coach for the Bills.

Not to worry, I'm about 90% positive the Bills will select Ryan Nassib with that 8th overall. Regardless of what anyone else says they know this kid inside and out. Plus he already knows the offense they will run. This is reminiscent of Dolphins last year with Tallwhacker & his college coach Mike Sherman now as OC.

I like Bray a lot, and I'm sure some team will fall in love with his arm despite his shortcomings... Just not the Bills.

That is what I assume will happen.

  9. Boy....I looked at his highlights of the Florida game and it sure looks like he can't read. He threw a lot of balls to guys on the wrong team. I can deal with his behavior if he's a standout on the field. But Bray looked bad to me.

Bray might end up a terrible pro, but Fitz will never...yadayadayada. Get someone in here to develop, or I'm not watching.

  10. I know it's been said before, but until they have someone that can utilize the WR's, there isn't much point to improving the corps(e). If they are gonna add to the offense, I would prefer a lineman, or a TE even. It's really hard to evaluate guys with such bad quarterbacking. The same guys playing with a top 10 QB would be good enough (or close to it), I'm certain. No WR with a winning attitude would come to a perrenial cellar dweller that hasn't had a good QB in 20 years anyway.

That's a part of the problem, I question the motivation of any free agent that would come here. It's where selfish guys that don't care about winning (just their own stats), or guys that are looking for that last payout, come to cash in. Those aren't the guys you want here when you are trying to turn the team around. Now is not the time for big free agent signings, now is the time for setting the team up financially to get a QB one of these years, or collecting draft picks to package later.

The Bills suck right now, and having a great collection of guys running around without anyone to throw the ball to them is folly.

  11. Interesting article by Bucky Brooks @ NFL.com

    5) Tyler Bray, QB, Tennessee

    Area of concern: Maturity.

Bray is arguably the most gifted passer in the 2013 NFL Draft, but he is not considered one of the top quarterback prospects due to concerns about his character.

    http://www.nfl.com/c...ething-to-prove

Should the Bills lose out on Nassib (who I think they will try and get in the 2nd round) They might get a shot at Bray

As I mentioned earlier, his behavior is an embarrassment, but he throws the ball better than any of the other guys in this draft. I will say that I would rather have Bray, than watch any more Fitz..

  12. I guess you'll be waiting a while. He's likely going to start this year.

It certainly looks like a possiblity, and that's why I mentioned that I wouldn't be watching. If they have a rookie that is obviously going to get the job midseason, I MIGHT watch. But frankly, if the rookie is that close, I wouldn't see a point in waiting to put him in. No way am I watching if Fitz is presented as the expected full season starter. Eff that! I skipped the final 9 games last season, something I had NEVER done before (30 years of fandom). That Tennessee game was IT! No more Fitz for me.

  13. And why not! After all he was the SB Winning QB.

I mean every blogger/scout/expert is going to be saying things like "this kids delivery reminds me of Joe Flacco", or "he is tall, with a presence in the pocket that is very much like Joe Flacco", "he makes reads in a similar fashion to Joe Flacco", "his hand offs have a distinct Flacco-ness to them", to describe 3/4's of QB's in the draft.

In other words, it doesn't mean much, because they are looking for ways to work Flacco's name into the analysis.

Go watch Zac Dyserts dropped balls.

Bray, Dysert, and Nassib all appeared to have lots of dropped passes.

  14. I saw that and can't figure out how he could be possibly worth that much money. I think I could take over and the NFL would still be flying just as high.

How much influence do you have in Washington DC? How many uber wealthy guys are in your peer group? Do you speaka tha language of the "elite"? Are you well-connected to TV Network executives? How about Wall Street, you go to school with any of the CEO's? Have you been building relationships with these types of people while working for a pro sports team, all the while learning the intricacies of negotiations with them?

These are the kind of things the NFL looks for in a Commissioner, and his paycheck has to at least keep him on the edges of that peer group.

  15. If Jackson plays pre-season this August, It'll be roughly a year and a half since going 7-9 with Seattle in the 2011-12.

He played in just three games in 2010, (stand-in for a beat-up Favre) before going down with a turf toe injury.

Everything I'm seeing says these guys are changing directions. Thanks to Chan, we have no idea what we're getting in T-Jax... He hasn't taken one snap as a Bill, If this were about Leverage, wouldn't they have signed somebody more threatening? If Marrone gets put in the doghouse early next season, I doubt it will be because of Fitz. I'd be stunned if the "bearded one" were still on our roster come March.

So Jackson might be ready to make the jump to "the next level"? He is some unknown quantity?

There is as good a chance that Fitz will take his play to the next level, as Jackson making that jump. Not gonna happen.

I would rather they run the Wishbone Offense with a running QB (even with Tim Tebow, who I can't stand) than sit through another season of poor to mediocre quarterback play from the same cast of characters. They just can't put the fans of Buffalo through that AGAIN. It's too painful. I swear, my eyes are welling up with tears just thinking about another season of it.
